So 40 miles of cycling today and shaking down the issues on the bikes - hopefully all good now.
Arrived at our guest house which is lovely L'oustal des Fontanilles guest house.
I had a dip in the pool whist Jim had a nana nap ( well he does not have an electric bike)
The host recommended Chez David for Cassoulet as we are in the home of Cassoulet and it did not let us down.
Very full and happy - time for sleep same again tomorrow to Carcassonne 💕

  • Carcassonne

    2025年9月13日〜14日, フランス ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Set off after an amazing breakfast towards Carcassonne.
The weather was a little overcast but still warm. The paths were great—quiet and not too busy. The bikes were behaving, so all was good.

We stopped for coffee at a little place by a lock, which turned out to be an art café. We had to be members to buy a coffee, so we joined! Just as we left, it started to pour with rain, but luckily we were only 7 miles from Carcassonne, so it wasn’t too bad.

We arrived in the city and had lunch while waiting to check in.
    29 miles today.
We explored the medieval castle, though it was incredibly busy and full of tourist tat.

Afterward, we headed back to the apartment to see if the bags had arrived so we could shower before dinner.
We took a walk and enjoyed a glass of wine, followed by a fantastic three-course dinner right by the appartment.

  • Villa Limonade Olonzac

    2025年9月14日〜15日, フランス ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Woke up and went for a wander to find breakfast and pick up some food for a picnic. When we got back to the apartment, breakfast had already been delivered—lol 😂

We cycled along clear paths in the sunshine to Trèbes, where there was a market and lovely cafés by the canal. We stopped for a drink and bought a melon to go with lunch.

Then came a bit of a disaster: Jim got another puncture, so we had to fix that.

We had our picnic at the side of a lock of Marseillette under the lime trees in the shade after cycling through a brocante ( car boot sale )

Our next goal was to reach a lake just outside Homps that had been recommended for swimming, but it was super windy, so we waited until we got to the villa to swim there instead.

We had been cycling alongside vineyards all day and our last little bit to the villa was through lush vineyards.

Our hosts are fantastic. We’d arranged to have dinner with them, and they set up a table outside in the garden—where the mozzies feasted on me 😅 But the food was amazing and the wine from the vineyards we cycled through earlier😀

Early night tonight—long day ahead tomorrow!

  • Hot Hot Hot 🔥

    2025年9月15日〜16日, フランス ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Fantastic breakfast - have been loving these communal breakfasts and guest houses - you get to meet lots of new people - our hosts last night were a brother and sister and great for a chat.
After a direction faux pas we found the canal again.
Today has been really hot so we decided to have lots of breaks the first was in Paraza for a coffee.
We then cycled on and then spotted what we thought was church but when we got closer it was a wine museum and degustation of the local wine at Ventenac - en - Minereois. Guess who ended up carrying 2 bottles of wine in their pannier 🤪
Lunch stop at a lovely village of Le Somail where we had the best Calamari ever and Jim was having a small salad - it was huge !
The temp was now almost hitting 40 so we had to have an ice cream stop.
We arrived into Capestang and another great guest house with a pool to cool down.
We wandered into the village for drinks and a pizza and now time to rest ready for day 5 - we are well over half way !!

  • Race to the Med

    2025年9月16日〜17日, フランス ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Another great breakfast sat by the pool with good chat. We set off along the canal which was single track and very bouncy, We came across the Malpas Tunnel that we had to go over the top of - Jim said that this tunnel was created in 1679 and is 169 metres long. The legend is that the canal builder was told to build locks over the hill and Maloas
Means bad passage on the sly he drilled the tunnel in only 1 week before the kings committee came to tell him it was a bad idea - you can read more here https://www.canal-du-midi.com/en/explore/along-…

We then got to Béziers which had the longest set of canal locks in France. We just stopped to take photos as it was too busy.

The path became an excelled tarmac path and we were going Ii. excess of 16 miles an hour on this stretch.
We stopped for a coffee but decided to keep going to get to Agde for lunch.

We arrived after 50km and had a very dodgy lunch note no photos of this.
We then cycled on to the coast so Helen could swim. it was so clear and warm. bliss !

When we got to the guest house we are the only ones here - no pool
But there was a jacuzzi and the lady who owns the house brought us wine beer and snacks.

Agde is not a pretty place
And we had dinner on a boat which was ok and a drink on the way back.
Now chilling ready for a short day cycling to Sete tomorrow

  • Oysters and Sunsets

    2025年9月17日, フランス ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Lazy start today, since we only had 28 km to cover.
We began by following the final stretch of the Canal du Midi before reaching the Mediterranean. The path was bustling with cyclists, so we decided to pause for a swim and soak up the sun ☀️. It honestly felt like a holiday day!

We then cycled into the outskirts of Sète and stopped for lunch—amazing seafood 💕.
After lunch, it was a quick ride across town to the port. Our accommodation is lovely, and our Italian host gave us plenty of tips for things to do this afternoon.

We started with a walk to Pointe Courte, a charming fishing village.
Next, we headed into the centre ville to see if we could catch a boat trip. We managed to snag the last two spots on the final departure—and it was absolutely worth it.

The trip took us through the canals (Sète is known as the Venice of the South of France), out into the Mediterranean, and then back into the Étang de Thau. We toured the oyster farms with a glass of wine in hand, watching the sunset—pure magic.

When we got back, oysters were a must. So we had dinner and then wandered back to our accommodation.
    Last day of cycling tomorrow!

  • End of the ride

    2025年9月18日〜20日, フランス ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We woke up and had breakfast, and before heading off on our last day of cycling, we were recommended to visit the market—it was said to be the best place to see the seafood.
Amazing! Since we were cycling, we couldn’t buy much, but we picked up a couple of bits for a picnic.

The start of the ride was simple, following another canal out of Sète. This was our first sighting of flamingos 🦩.

We reached the spot where we were meant to join the path running between two étangs and a canal, but it took a few tries to actually get on it.
All was going well until Jim had his third puncture 😱. While he fixed it, I got the picnic ready, which we ate while watching more flamingos 🦩.

We dropped the bikes off and unpacked the panniers, ready for an Uber into the city to our loft apartment in Montpellier. It’s nice to have space, but it lacks the homely touch we’d grown used to in the guest houses. We unpacked and washed all the cycling gear—which should make our bags smell a little nicer!

After showers and a glass of the rosé I’d been carrying around for a few days, we ventured into town. We were in need of a quiet night to feel refreshed for the next day.
The town was heaving—we think it must be the equivalent of Freshers’ Week, with so many students around. We had dinner at a pavement café and ended up in a brewery for a few drinks.

Then, finally, bed—and the luxury of sleeping in the same bed for a couple of nights with no alarm set !

  • Day of Rest

    2025年9月19日, フランス ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

No alarm calls, no packing bags, no cycling and had to get my own breakfast lol 😂

Slow very slow start to the day. We then figured out the trams to get to the Aquarium 🐠🐡🐟What a place 2 hours watching fish in the cool 💕
It was in a large shopping and restaurant area so had a late lunch nothing special.

We then worked out the journey to the medieval part of the city, wandering around small streets , cathedral and finishing back at the gardens by the comadie square for drinks watching the guys play chess and listening to the parakeets. We saw an orchestra setting up and there was to be a free performance so we stayed and watched rather than going back to change.

    After the performance we had
Seen a great place for dinner so we stopped for more seafood as back to cassoulet tomorrow in Toulouse.

Back to the brewery Jim found yesterday and then it will
Be back to the apartment to pack ready for our train in the morning.

  • Train back to Toulouse

    2025年9月20日〜22日, フランス ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

    Not much to report today
Traveled on the TGV back to Toulouse - first time in a double decker train. Great to see some of the places we cycled and amazed that a 7 day cycle took 2.5 hours on the train!
When we arrived we could not get a taxi as the roads were closed where we are staying so we had a long walk with the bags😱

Apartment is amazing and right in the middle of all the action.
We did amazing quick change and then rushed to a city tour we had booked yesterday. We passed by where it had all stated 8 days ago💕

Ice cream, beers and Ricard and then back to change for dinner.
We had smelt curry cooking earlier and thought we would give it a go - it was ok but was not the best we have eaten.

Another little walk and a last drink overlooking the cathedral and back to bed.

  • Last day before home

    2025年9月21日, フランス ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Woke up to a rainy day so I only had one thing on my list of where I wanted to see and that was the Victor Hugo market. so after breakfast we set off and I am glad
We made the effort - it was amazing so much meat, cheese, wine, pastry and fish.
After walking all the way round we had our last oysters and a glass of cold wine within the market. We then decided that we would cook tonight as we were missing veg. so bought all the ingredients for a good dinner.
Walking back we visited a church with the ceiling painted in 1659. We then went into the cathedral. By then it was throwing it down so we dashed back to the apartment and had a film day and then cooked dinner.
Now to pack the bags to head home in the morning,
