    Zum Toten Meer

    Und noch eine und noch eine Kurve, dann kann ich Hammamat Ma'in, die heißen Wasserfälle, sehen. Mit bis zu 60 Grad kommt das Wasser, das Schwefel, Soda und Magnesium enthält, aus den Wänden und dem Boden und landet in natürlichen Steinbecken. Oh, welche eine Wonne sich berieseln zu lassen.
    Nach 2 Stunden bin ich durchgeweicht und suche mir einen Platz zum Übernachten mit Blick auf das Tote Meer,
    das in seinem Farbenspiel ganz lebendig wirkt.
    Am nächsten Tag gibts dann einmal volles Programm:-) Heilschlamm und Wasser in dem Untergehen nicht möglich ist. Nur in die Lunge darf es nicht, ist tödlich ... also kein Brust schwimmen, denn da ploppen die Beine nach oben, und der Kopf taucht kurzfristig ab.
    Und über die St. Georgskirche, mit der berühmten Palästina-Karte (wofür tatsächlich 2 Millionen Steinchen zusammengesetzt wurden) in einen Pinienwald kurz vor Amman.    En savoir plus

    Frühling im Wadi

    Grand canyon von Jordanien

    Am späten Nachmittag komm ich an der Kante des Grand Canyon an. Ich treffe Conny und Tommy auf der anderen Seite am Übernachtungsplatz und schlängle mich die Serpentinen runter und wieder rauf. Welch ein Hochgenuss!
    Sobald ich an einem Aussuchtspunkt aussteige werd ich zum Tee eingeladen...
    so wirds immer später und ich schaff es grad so bis zum Sonnenuntergang.
    In der Nacht Standplatz zu suchen macht immer Stress und ist tunlichst zu vermeiden!
    Am nächsten Morgen geht es noch zu Kirchen mit wunderschönen Bodenmosaiken und weiter durchs frühlingshafte Wadi Richtung Totes Meer.    En savoir plus

    So viele Eindrücke auf dem Weg.
    Wie kann man in diesen schäbigen Häusern oder Zelten einen Winter, mit nächtlichenTemperaturen bei 4 Grad und häufig heftigem Wind, überleben?
    Ali aus Syrien geflohen ist seit 7 Jahren hier und hütet Schafe. Sein sehnlichster Wunsch ist irgendwie nach Germany zu kommen.

    Ein neuer Tag

    Oh, etwas mehr Sicht und ah, da bin ich gestern gelandet. Ein wunderschöner Platz oberhalb eines Naturschutzgebietes, ideal zum wandern, wenn nicht gerade ALLES im Schlamm versinkt.
    Bea ist auch hier.
    Wir tanken Wasser... a bisserl mühsam... doch gleichzeitig ein Dank an dieses kostbare Gut!
    Dann noch Schuhe und Auto - innen- vom Schlamm befreien. Doch alles kein Problem wir haben ja Zeit :-)
    Kaum ist es 12 Uhr geht's weiter.
    Sagenhafte Landschaft, weiterhin karge Dörfer, immer wieder Regen, manchmal Sonne, manchmal Hagel. Volles Programm.
    Dann komm ich an diesem verzauberten Platz... es ist noch früh, eiskalt, doch hier will ich bleiben. Und der Blog ist damit auch wieder up to date.
    Und dann bekomm ich noch diesen sagenhaften Sonnenuntergang geschenkt. Meine Seele sagt DANKE    En savoir plus

    Auf der Königstraße

    Eigentlich sollten es zwei Tage Petra werden, doch am frühen Abend setzte heftiger Regen ein, der einfach nur gelegentlich mal pausierte.
    Welch ein Glück ich doch mit dem heutigen Sonnentag hatte.
    Am nächsten Tag erstmal abwarten und ins Museum. Am früheren Nachmittag wurde es etwas lichter, also weiter... jetzt kommt die Königsstraße mit ihrer grandiosen Bergstecke. Doch nach Little Petra zog starker Nebel auf und es wurde sehr kalt.
    Wollte noch zu nem Camp in 40 km Entfernung und brauchte dafür 2 Stunden. Sicht null und jeder fuhr mit Warnblinkanlage. Temperatur bei Ankunft im Matsch vom Hof des Camps war bei 9 Grad. Ist doch super gelaufen! Da es an dem Tag keine Sonne gab, hatten die solarbetiebenen Duschen auch kein heißes Wasser. Bleibt mal wieder der geliebte Waschlappen :-)
    Doch in der Stube wars warm, dank der vielen Italiener und Franzosen und das Arabische Buffet sehr lecker!

    Die Touriseite von Petra

    An der Kante von dem was für mich noch erträglich ist.
    Ich verstehe ja, dass es eine Einnahmequelle für Bevölkerung ist... doch werden die Mulis leider nicht sehr gut behandelt. Müssen gnadenlos Last tragen.
    Und in den Gräbern gibt's dann Kaffee und Tee, und die Straßen sind gesäumt von Ständen mit all den netten Mitbringseln für die Touris.
    Doch die Begegnungen mit den Einheimischen waren sehr schön.

    Also, beide Augen zudrücken und durch, mit dem Blick auf diese grandiose Architektur im Einklang mit der Natur, ihren Farben, dieser hoch entwickelten Kultur vor tausenden von Jahren.
    800 dieser Monumente sind in Petra und Umgebung erhalten.

    Da wäre ich doch nur zu gern einfach mittendrin gewesen, im Theater gesessen, im Pool des Tempels geschwommen, oder einfach nur durch die Straßen gelaufen.    En savoir plus

    Petra

    Petra und die geheimnisvollen Nabatäer. Ein Beduinenstamm, dessen Herrschaftsgebiet sich auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Macht von Damaskus bis zum Sinai erstreckte.
    Sie ließen sich im 6. Jh.v.Chr. im Königreich Edom, dem heutigen Südjordanien, nieder und beherrschten über Jahrhunderte die Handelsrouten der alten arabischen Welt.
    Vor allem Weihrauch, Myrrhe und Gewürze wurden transportiert.
    Die friedfertige, egalitäre Gesellschaft behauptete jahrhundertelang ihre Stellung zwischen den Großmächten der Region.
    Pertra war einer der besonders kosmopolitischen Orte der damaligen Welt, hier mischten sich griechische, ägyptische und semitische Kunsteinflüsse. Die Stadt genoss großes Ansehen wegen ihrer Architektur und des ausgeklügelten Kanalsystems zur Wasserversorgung.
    Nachdem die Römer in Petra Einzug hielten, wurde sie Hauptstadt der römischen Provinz Arabica. Die Karavanenrouten verlagerten sich nach Palmyra (im heutigen Syrien), und der Niedergang der Nabatäer begann.
    Mehrere Erdbeben (365 und 746 n. Chr.) ließen die Menschen aus Petra fliehen.
    In Vergessenheit geraten, wurde die Felsenstadt erst 1812 vom Schweizer Jean Louis Burckhardt wiederentdeckt und ausgebuddelt.
    Petra wird wegen des Farbenspiels auch als die "rose-red city" bezeichnet.    En savoir plus

    Und weiter gehts nach Petra

    Damit das Wüstenabenteuer nicht so abrupt vorbei ist, fahren wir über weitere 30 km Piste durch hellere, zauberhafte Wüstenlandschaften.
    An der Hauptstraße angekommen, muss erstmal wieder der Reifendruck mittels Kompressor hoch.
    Nach wenigen Minuten Arbeit gesellt sich schon ein Pick up mit Vater und zwei interessierten Jungs zu uns. Puh, what a smell!
    Die ganze Gegend wirkt arm und heruntergekommen, und als Untermalung haben wir noch Sandsturm. Auch auf der Weiterfahrt durch die hügelige immer grüner werde Landschaft wirken die Häuser sehr einfach und teilweise notdürftig.
    Und dann liegt es auch schon unter mir, das "neue Petra".
    Für heute bin ich am Ziel. Am Parkplatz vor dem Tor zum "alten Petra" übernachte ich, um dann morgen ganz früh los zu ziehen, in die sagenumwobene Stadt der Nabatäer.    En savoir plus

    die Wüstenlandschaft des Wadi Rum

    Nur 80 km von Aqaba entfernt beginnt schon wieder eine faszinierende Wüste, die ich zusammen mit Bea erobern werde. Frauen-Gespann, klappt bestimmt gut.
    Ha, schon den zweiten Tag hier und noch nicht einmal eingegraben.
    Wir düsen über Sanddünen - ist fast wie mit dem Auto schwimmen - rubbeln über Waschbettpisten, fahren durch Canyons, stehen auf Felsbögen und werden immer mutiger.
    Am Abend sitzen wir am Sunset point und warten ... doch ... die Sonne verabschiedet sich im Dunst.
    Und jetzt können wir hier an diesem traumhaft, jetzt ganz ruhigen Platz, die Nacht verbringen, während die Pauschaltouristen mit den Pick ups in die Camps gebracht werden.

    Mit Jordanien beginnt eine neue Welt

    Das relativ kleine Land eingequetscht zwischen Syrien, Saudi-Arabien und Israel besitzt kaum Bodenschätze wie die anderen Länder der arabischen Halbinsel und ist insgesamt viel ärmer. 1/3 der Bevölkerung sind Palästinenser und nur ein Teil der syrischen Flüchtlinge sind registriert. Finanzielle Unterstützung bekommt das Land vor allem aus Amerika und Saudi-Arabien.
    Dank der kulturellen Schätze kommt auch über den Tourismus Geld ins Land.
    Los gehts mit der Reise durch das haschemitische Königreich!
    Nach einem problemlosen Grenzübertritt landen wir erstmal am Südstrand von Aqaba ... einer Stadt die vor allem von der Containerschifffahrt und dem Luxus- Taucher-Tourismus lebt, doch außer ein paar schönen Stränden mit vorgelagerten Riff und Blick übers Meer nach Ägypten nicht viel zu bieten hat.
    Beim abgeben meiner Wäsche lande ich dann gleich in einem ärmeren Viertel das eher an Indien oder Bangladesch erinnert.
    Bevor es weitergeht ins Wadi Rum, genieße ich erstmal für 2 Tage den Strand und ein super Fischessen mit dem ersten Wein seit vielen Wochen in einem Luxusresort :-)    En savoir plus

    Die Story vom Nummernschild

    Oh, das vordere Nummernschild fehlt... das haben wir beim Frühstück im Wadi Disah entdeckt.
    Die Recherche ergab, bei der ersten Wasserdurchfahrt war es noch da, bei der letzten nicht mehr.
    Also, am nächsten Morgen im Wasser gebuddelt aber nix gefunden.
    Shit, was nun... erstmal eins aus Pappe gebastelt. Doch Tommy meinte, da müssten wir uns für die Grenzübergänge noch was besseres einfallen lassen.
    Ein Print wäre doch super.
    In Tabuk tatsächlich einen Shop gefunden.
    Wow, auf Acrylglas und damit wetterfest, doch leider etwas zu groß angefertigt.
    Andy und Dietmar haben dann heute noch Hand angelegt, gefeilt, gesägt und um die Perfektion noch zu vollenden, mit dem Edding nachgeholfen.

    A sad moment, I am leaving for Germany

    I am leaving our trip "Gypsies on the move" and returning to Germany.
    Why?
    For years, I have wanted to walk the "Pacific Crest Trail" from Mexico, along the Sierra Nevada, to Canada.
    It never worked out.
    Either I missed the auction for getting a starting slot, or covid came along, or I couldn't get a visa in time.
    This year, in January, I again took part in the auction for starting slots, sitting in our Sprinti at 1am in the morning (because the auction happens on the US West coast) and never believed I would succeed.
    Fate thought differently, and I was awarded a starting slot for 12th.May to walk 6 months to Canada. A visa also exists.
    Suddenly, I had to make a choice.
    I am 65 and don't know how long I will still be able to do such a demanding hike, and it is one of the projects on my list of projects before I die.
    I decided to do it and give myself one month to prepare everything. I need to lose weight, get fit, and prepare things so I can be away for 6 months and will be flying back to Germany from Tabuk today.
    My heart is torn. I am ending the trip of a lifetime with Margot, I will not experience the rest of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the return through Irak and Turkey. And I have no idea what is awaiting me, only a calling I have been hearing for years.
    Seeing Margot drive out of the parking lot at the airport, corageously confronting months of driving alone , tore my heart in two, and I am far from feeling any excitement in connection with what is ahead of me.
    Far more, it is sadness and confusion about whether I took the right decision and worry concerning Margot.

    As I fly over Saudi Arabia, I imagine seeing her in sitting Sprinti, down there in the desert, without her companion of 6 months. Being able to share the experiences.

    After a beautiful, relaxed morning, we decided to shorten the route by taking a shortcut. That was a REALY bad idea because everyone ended up getting stuck in deep sand, with lots of digging as the result. Yet, we arrived into a beautiful sunset as a reward for our hardship.
    Unlike most canyons, which were created by erosion, the al shaq canyon is the result of an earthquake causing a huge crack in the ground.    En savoir plus

    When we reached the main road, we said, "OH NO, NOT NOW!", turned around and drove back into the Wadi to spend a starry night amidst the sound of crickets, and in the morning, the sound of myriads of birds.
    On the way, we watch how a land cruiser pulls a pick-up out of the sand, using barbed wire strung through a hole in the chassis. We'll, I suppose that is also an alternative!    En savoir plus

    A more beautiful gift for our anniversary is not immaginable. At midday, we set off into the Wadi and didn't come out of our astonishment until 3 hours later. The 300m high weathered red rocks, the luscious green palm trees, the tree-high reeds along the water flow, and driving through this all totally alone were like a short glimpse in paradise. It was a continuous "Oh my god, how beautiful!" Between the two of us. And the awareness that this was one huge gift for our wedding anniversary.
    What a privilege to be here, to be able to do this trip.

    When we got to the other side and back onto the road, a loud "NO" appeared within us, so we turned round and headed straight back into paradise!    En savoir plus

    Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary (10 years) and this trip has been the ultimate test, living on 4 m2 for 6 months!
    And destiny has forseen an incredible gift for us, a wadi that beats all we have seen so far, rocks, water, palms and a bird concert of the supreme!
    We spend the night at the wadi entrance drifting into our wedding anniversary with a wonderful, relaxed morning and then head through the wadi canyon    En savoir plus

    A wild sandstorm, we stay another day

    During the night and all day long a wild sandstorm has been whipping through the oasis reducing visibility and depositing dust in every corner of our van. So we made a household day, filling diesel, water, cleaning and shopping.

    In the late afternoon the wind had subsided and we decided to walk the "heritage trail" through the oasis.
    In their huge effort to create a nation with an identity and to start a tourist industry, the Saudis have litterally rebuilt the oasis with its mud brick huts amidst these incredible rocky cliffs, have planted vegetable gardens and palm trees, and have created city spaces that are so aesthetic and ingeneous that they must have had the best designers in the world working on this project (as is the case in Riad). While this all carries the taste of Disney land (a little), these are also real living spaces for local population, who go for walks, swing on the swings and have a picnic evening. This gives it a real legitamacy.

    Al Ula, oasis on the frankincense route

    Yesterday, we arrived in Al Ula, an oasis on the "frankinsense route" and unesco heritage site.
    It reflects the effort of Saudi Arabia since its opening to foreigners two years ago to create a premium tourist industry. A whole town of mud buildings is in the process of being rebuilt, an international airport in the middle of the dessert, premium adventure-and, bus tours, fenced-in historical sites and the creation of a huge dessert game reserve with animals being repatriated into their natural habitat.
    And, what a pleasure, absolutely premium restaurants! Unfortunately without wine!
    To note is that a few days ago RAMADAN began, where people don't eat nor drink during daylight hours. During the day "everything" shop
    Is closed and at 20:00hrs everyone breaks fast and life goes on all night.    En savoir plus

    A different era of Rock engravings

    Today we passed a water spring in full desert. This was surely a stop over for caravans on the "incense route" over centuries and so the rock engravings have changed. Accompanying the old cuneiform writing we see Greek letters. Also the motifs have changed with Hunters with guns appearing. In the period BC, documents mention teeming wildlife in the desert. Could the guns have been the end of this wildlife?En savoir plus
