  • All checked in —> L.A. —> Lima!

    4. juli 2024, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Up and out early! Check-in time 4am … (The birds weren’t even up and neither was Payton). But Mike was and in his true loving fashion escorted this lady to the airport for more words of encouragement and reminders to have fun (i.e. don’t be a fun-stopper). Filled with anticipation, we are off with eyes, ears and hearts wide open to Gods plan for this team and the village of La Libertad!

Next stop … Lima! 🇵🇪 Cheers!

  • We. Have. Arrived. Heelllooo Lima!

    4. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Our team has arrived to Lima! Smooth sailing for us. Easy flights and everyone still likes one another so success!

Luggage count … 17 … not including our carry-ons and one personal item. 😳 Talk about blessing these peeps, as the 17 bags that were checked are full of activities and gifts for the villagers of La Libertad!

Tomorrow we will take a quick flight to Iquitos where the adventure really begins! Stay tuned! 🙏🏼

P.S. Weather upon arrival was SO nice! A cool evening was very welcoming after a long travel day.

    Hugs! ✌🏼

  • Travel Day 2 Lima —> Iquitos

    5. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

With 17+ bags in tow and our anticipation packed, started the morning with coffee (duh) and a little breakfast before heading back across the street-o to the Aero Porto (🤣) for probably theeee longest check-in of my life = 9:30 - 10:30 and we were first in line. 😳. Then after a random bag check (flagged my Flonase “Its not liquid coca, promiso”), a gate change and a bus ride to snag our first stair-master of the trip, we are wheels up to Iquitos!

  • Hola Iquitos! Campus Livin’

    5. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Arrived in Iquitos to warm rain … warm, refreshing rain. As you all know, I’m not a dancing in the rain type of gal. I prefer to be warm and dry … but today … I embraced it. Embraced where I was, content with the unknown of what was to come and faith knowing I was exactly where I needed to be. (Mike’s pep talk sure sunk in and always grateful for his words/support).

The drive to our campus in Nina Rumi (home for the week) wasn’t bad at all! Some paved roads and some dirt… oddly familiar feel as the small shacks lined the roads and people bustled along on tuk tuks. But what was different was the dogs appeared fed! Hallelujah! No dog food stop for us this trip.

Campus is quaint, clean and lush green. Boys cabin and girls cabin … bunk beds in each, along with showers and bathrooms. Running water but no hot water, which is a bit rough given I do appreciate a hot shower. But not complaining!

We had about an 1/2 hour to get settled in and then kids and families arrived. They packed the campus hall with smiles and excitement. Worship happened (Mike’s favorite part 🤪), then Venetia came in to get the kiddos hyped for the activities.

    - Water fight
    - Corn hole
    - Hair accessories
    - Bracelets and Necklace making
    - Nail polish; apparently Tawnya does pedicures too! She was thrilled! Lol
    - Potato sack races

The kids enjoyed the day and even moms and grandmas joined in the fun when the kiddos weren’t. And that’s when I met this beautiful mama… she approached me (as I was taking a moment for myself) and put on a handmade bracelet she made with her own supplies. Her deep dark brown eyes were so kind and warm. Besides my go-to “gracias”, I had no words. So I did what I knew … gave her a hug and repeated “Gracias” muy mucho.

Our paths crossed again at the end of the day when T and I were finishing the nail polish station and even showed off my bracelet to where Josh (fellow team member) bought 5 bracelets from her and I snagged a few too! She was so very grateful and before she left, she gave me a kiss on the cheek and a hug goodbye. Wish I snagged her name…

Dinner was catfish, steamed veggies, potatoes, plantains and a salad mixture. While I don’t eat fish… catfish brought a flood of memories on my Grandpa Ernie and his love of catfish. Many fishing trips on his brown boat in the Sac River catching what he saw as dinner and I saw as a pet. (It’s a story for another day but ol’ Grandpa Ernie… have to 🤍 him and his ways. Mind you he was also the grandpa that made me eat a hot tomato with salt one time in a field 🤢).

Night concluded with journaling and giggles from my lady mates. Tomorrow off to the village Momonicello (village District visited last year) to drop some seeds to plant food but seeds of hope and love.

  • Village Monmocillo

    6. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Loss of words for today’s adventures! One hour trip along the Rio Nanay —> 20 min Tuk Tuk ride along red dirt roads to the village of Momoncillo. This isn’t the village we came to serve but one that District is involved with along with La Libertad.

Arriving at the village, we were greeted by the villagers at the school that District built and kicked off the visit with prayer and thanksgiving. From there a “walk” to the main village area where we were able partake in educating them about seeds and gardening, and even provide them with a starter pack! (No one should have to guess that I was not a part of this… Succulents are my thang).

But after this it was time for some volleyball! Yep. Hat backwards and it was on like Donkey Kong. Well only as much as this 45 year old could muster in the heat and humidity. 🤪
From there some lunch (pork, rice and salad) and then kid activities; stickers, coloring and nail painting!

And… water fights!!! Kids loved this and it was a true testament to my growth and maturity that I did not pelt a kiddo with a water ball. #competitive #itsinmyblood. Then… God showed up and down came the rain!!! He wins again! We retreated to the covered area and came up with our exit plan. Once the rain stopped and the skies became azul again (pretty much fluent espanol) -> 3 x 3 we were Tuk Tuk’d out of the village. Slip sliding away… we went! Driver Rolando was a champion! We managed to avoid getting stuck. But we do have Jesus on our side, so there is that!

Final share for today before showers and dinner… Met the cutest little lady… she was standoffish when we first met but I wore her down and by the end of the day, she had a blue cross necklace and gave me a hug!! And not just any hug but a solid squeeze. Impressive courage since let’s just say the deodorant for many of us had expired for the day by now. 🤍

It’s been said that they think we come to help and provide for them but really … what they give us is more precious than we could ever provide or return to them. It’s pure joy from a simple life. Joy not from material things or money, but just simply embracing each and every day as it comes.

  • Igeslias in La Libertad

    7. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Set scene: Jungle Cruise @ Disneyland. Picture that … that’s what it felt like as we ventured along the Rio Nanay.

Day went a little like this…

Breakfast at 7am sharp… then 8:15am was time to head from Nina Rumi (campus) to La Libertad for church. La Libertad is the village our team will be visiting for the remainder of our trip.

Facts of La Libertad: 200 villagers + 101 years old + 3 churches and just now receiving fresh water. 💧 #waterislife

Church was amazing! Axel (one of our team members) delivered God’s word today. All about the Golden Rule. Anyone need a refresher? “Do unto others, as you would like done unto you” 👌🏼 God is love and God commands us to love our neighbors (including the ones that may or may not conduct a burn pile their front lawn). Woo eee! Convicted!

I brought my Bible with me this trip. It’s been a desire placed on my heart to pick this book up and read it. I do my daily devotionals and I pray in the day but do I consistently read God’s word? Negative. So this trip I felt compelled to bring it with me, and with little to no service, what a perfecto time to pick it up!

Bible Background: Zander purchased this Bible for me when he was in 1st or 2nd grade at a book fair at school. It’s been a treasured gift for all of these years but I’m embarrassed to admit I just now realize what a true treasure he gifted me.

Also made me wonder if he thought… “My mom needs Jesus!” 🤣 He was right! So young and so wise!

Ok back to the point… as service began to conclude it came to me to have this treasure blessed by the pastors; Pastor Nestor of La Libertad and Pastor David of Catch a Vision. Uncomfortable as it was to ask… I asked Piero (our interpreter) to ask if they would do that. He asked and the blessings rained down… Ask and you shall receive, right?

Tears entered stage right and this probably was the only time I wished to have my contacts back to have a chance to fight them back. Pastor David continued the prayers and told me (here is cliff notes) that the map to life is in this book. All the answers I’ll ever need were right there. And that’s when this team found out I’m an ugly crier.

    Theee End.

Jk… but kind of. After that we did a quick gathering in their community center and then a quick walk to the water well before jumping on boat back to Nina Rumi. Here at campus we packed 87 food bags to distribute to the families in La Libertad.

Bags included;: Oil, oats, rice, beans, canned meat, matches, salt, cookies and tea. And we are told will feed them for 2-3 weeks based on the family size. Such a blessing from above through all that who have donated to make this a thing!!! Thanks to you all!

But wait… there’s more. At dinner we shared our one thing of the day, and I of course shared my Bible blessing experience and thanked Pastor David for the perfect words I needed to hear earlier that day.

Grabbing a water and people disbursing back to their cabins…. Pastor David re-enters the dining room to share with me his Bible that someone gave him in 2003. From there he spent another hour with us preaching and pouring into our perfectly imperfect selves. What a Godsend he is and I’m truly appreciative for Gods words through this man.

Tomorrow is first full day in La Libertad. Ready??? Me too!

    God is good! Amen! ✌🏼🤍🙏🏼

  • V.B.S’ing with La Libertad

    8. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

    V.B.S. = Vocational Bible Study
Today was all about spending time with the villagers … keeping to our theme of L-♥️-V-E and livin’ water 💦!

A bit of a later start this morning but off to the village we went along the Rio Nanay about 9:15am.

Festivities began at 10am with prayer and BiG thanks to God for the day.

From there it was go time…

    - “Be the Light Project” where kiddos (and mamas) colored a design themed on Matthew 5:16, which says “… let your light shine before others …”. A reminder to them to let their light shine (gifts) that God blessed them with to shine bright to glorify God.

    - Aprons for the ladies … and the men!!!!!! These were made by a woman’s group, and each have a small label stating “Made with Love” to remind them they each are love and loved.

Before these were handed out, a story behind the apron was read to them (see pic).

    - Jewels on the ♥️’s of the villagers. Elsi (interpreter) and I went around to all the ladies, young and old and put a sparkly gem over their ♥️’s.

Union Break! Lunch and a tour of the water well project for us. But not for Pastor David and his few contractors he brought with him to help him build the water well enclosure. Pastor David was equipped with his tape measure, a rectangle type contractors pencil (that reminded me of what my grandfather and dad used to build fences - ya know the one???) and a few DeWalt skill saws. A roof were coming to life!

They were showing us that the water well wasn’t quite ready, as it would take a few days to flush out the dirt from the pipes from the drilling. So every so often, a generator would fire-up for a few minutes, let a bunch of water out and then shut down. What a process but this water well will be their source of life! All thanks to Jesus and His living water. 🙏🏼

After a few minutes, back to community center we went for …

    - Handmade dresses for the girls. These were made by the same church group and “made with love” but also from a fellow team members wife we sewed some for the village girls as well. The extras were handed to a woman who was in charge of the lady villagers, to hand out as girls outgrew the ones they chose today.

    - Zappatos for all! Woman and children first and then the gents snagged a pair of shoes from the variety we had available. God provided a new pair of shoes for each and every one of the villagers! Amen.

    - But wait there was one more thing … Dolls and stuffed animals for all!!!

Through this process I was able to take in all the sights, each team members interactions with children and families, and all of God’s goodness. The grateful hearts that surrounded us was enough to make one’s cup runneth over.

I did spot one young lady, Ariana… with a “Faith, Hope, Love” t-shirt. Our eyes locked and she was a must-meet for me. Anyone who knows me, knows I am a HUGE Tim Tebow fan. Don’t believe me… I still have my Broncos #15 jersey ready for the Broncos next super-bowl! 🤪

    Another heart-full day!

    Amen ✌🏼🤍🙏🏼

  • House Visits + V.B.S La Libertad

    9. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

It’s Day 9 of our travels and being away from home sweet home… away from my comfort zone and all my loved ones has started to wear on this introvert a smidge. Probably a bit homesick and also on Day 3 of Cipro (Google that if you need to know what that med is for 🫣) so to say that today started with a bit of a challenge may be a bit of an understatement.

But God had other plans for me… This morning I was asked to pray over breakfast and for the day. Ever been asked to pray when it’s the last thing you feel like doing? That was me this morning! But God put prayer in my path so I prayed. It wasn’t my best performance but the team gave a big AMEN and then we (more like they) feasted.

On a trip back to our cabin before we left, I was about to walk out of our room and felt the need to grab my Bible. Grabbed it and put it in my backpack just in case.

My plan for me today was to be a supporting role (comfort-zone) and just quietly go about my day. But this was not God’s plan for me either today …

We got to the village and Pastor David called me over to him for a one-on-one and showed me another Bible he was gifted, that had two Bible verses handwritten from the gifter; Mateo 24:14 and Marco 16:15. He told me to not see myself as small but that with God in my heart, I am big and can do great things! And to go out today and allow God to talk through my heart to the people of La Libertad. Ugh… the tug at my ♥️ with those words.

The first half of the day started with these home visits, where we were welcomed into the villager’s homes, granted the opportunity to pray over them and was able to reconnect with many of the villagers we met yesterday during VBS.

Pop quiz! What does VBS stand for?

And as Pastor David promised … God’s strength and words arrived and Tawnya and I prayed for and with these people. From medical issues, to over babies and simple prayers for hope, faith and love (Tebow!) Tears flowed and hugs exchanged. Amen. 🙏🏼

Remainder of the day was f-u-n! Fun with the men! Fun with the ladies! And fun with the kiddos of course! Gerri did a demonstration on planting seeds (Please tell me you have read LCP’s newsletter on planting seeds!) and then each received some seeds to plant, nurture and grow just like we need to do with our faith. Remember … Faith the size of a mustard seed will move mountains!

And I totally redeemed myself with sunglass! They were a hit! 😎 (Guatemala gave me a big thumbs down 👎🏼 on the el’ sunglass-os so this was a big highlight for this gal!)

Kiddos meanwhile flew kites, played soccer, jumped rope (I even joined in for about 60 seconds) and my new amiga, Ariana, asked me to play volleyball with her. It was liked getting picked first to play kickball! And one of our team members did dance lessons at the school. Soooooo good! 💃🕺

Team is pooped. Villagers are pooped. God is good.

    Amen. ✌🏼🤍🙏🏼

  • Pastor David 🙏🏼Edwin! A kind soul!!

    Last day = Unity 🙏🏼🤍

    10. juli 2024, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Can I just start off by saying … that while I’m homesick and missing the hugs and comfort of home … I wouldn’t have missed today for anything!

Holy moly! Not even sure where to begin or even if this “footprint” can fit all that’s in my mind and heart. The pictures won’t do the power of the Holy Spirit with us and in us today justice.

    Here was our schedule …

    - Welcome and a few words of thanks.
    - Dental care and hand out tooth brushes
    - Spaghetti lunch with the villagers
    - Blessing of the well
    - Hand out FOOD BAGS!!!
    - Depart

    But here was God’s schedule…

    - Welcome, powerful worship and gratitude from not only our team to the villagers but the Pastor of the village + villagers to us.

    - Dental care and hand out of tooth brushes (Question … are you really supposed to brush 3x times per day??? Table this dental discussion for another day 😉) Who is ever this excited to brush pearly whites? Answer: They were!

    - Marco (a local villager) gave his life to Christ. Our team member Axel (aka Pastor Axel) was asked by Pastor David/Marco to pray over him as he gave his life to Christ. 🙏🏼

    - More worship. Please tune into the song “Blessings” and then just try to place yourself where we were… with these people, praying for them and for their generations to come.

    - 14 others then gave their life to Christ during worship. 14!!!!!!!!!!

    - Blessed a blind girl (Cindi) with her own hammock and pad to sleep on. Back story: This was a young girl that was blind and was in a home where we did a home visit yesterday. Yesterday T and I prayed with her where she slept on the floor, which we later found out was her space. So much that “her place” on the wood floor was worn and smooth where she lays. Her smile says it all!

    - Pastor David asked me to go take a picture with him by the drilling water well. Who, me??? Absolutely!!! Love this guys soul and will be forever grateful for his time and words. 🙏🏼 I feel seen by him and he knows my struggles without me saying a word.

    - Spaghetti lunch. Mounds of pasta, rice and chicken for all!! We weren’t sure we would have enough but loaves and fishes anyone?

    - Food bags. 87 food bags with one liter of soda pop and a biblioteca. Each family received about 2 weeks of food.

Then… once that work was done, we departed to waves goodbye, smiles and tears. Both from the shore and many from the boat.

Unified under our God… all praising Him for His work through us this week.

But there’s more! We arrived back to Nina Rumi and where Susan (new in her faith) and one of our fearless leaders, Venetia, were baptized by Pastor David. So special that we were able to experience this with these two lovely souls.

Then it was rocking chair time… Time to sit and reflect on the porch. And just as I sat down after a cold-refreshing shower to reflect on the day by myself with my blessed Bible, enter Pastor David. He came over and sat next to me on our porch and we read today’s Bible verse together … 2 Timothy 3:16-17, with the help of Esli, one of the translators (like Presley but not). Tawyna joined us and we had some special time with Pastor David and last words of wisdom.

Tomorrow we pack up early and head back to reality where SO many blessings await for me. I’m so ready to be home and will be returning a different type of Big Ang. Maybe this version of Big Ang will live life knowing she serves a Big God and He can (and will) do Big things.

So I’ll pack my things, along my faith that is the size of a mustard seed and see what kind of mountains He will move!

Until next time Peru and people of La Libertad! Until next time…

    ✌🏼🤍🙏🏼

Our Trek Home - Final Thoughts

    12. juli 2024, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

As I’m writing this update, we are about 2 hours from Sacramento and the last leg of our trip home. Our travels began yesterday (7-11) at 8:30am as we left Nina Rumi campus and will conclude once we are wheels down today (7-12) at 11:00am.

Quick run-down of our travels back to warm showers, comforting hugs and Mike’s cooking!

    Nina Rumi —> 🚌 to Iquitos for shopping/lunch —> ✈️ to Lima —> ✈️ to Atlanta —> ✈️ to Sacramento—> 🚗 to 419.

Such emotion walking out the gates of the place we called home for the last week +. But want to know what didn’t enter my mind??? The question if we did enough, and if I was enough….

I struggle with enough… could I have done more? What could we have done better? Done more of? I mean, I’m getting better with my self-worth discovery but on trips like these, the enemy will and does attack. He tried! Cipro anyone? 🤪 But I truly believe in my deep dark 🖤 that Pastor David was our shephard. He would leave the 99 to bring back the 1… 🙏🏼

I can say with confidence, we left it all out on the field. Our hearts. Our souls. Our love for these people. Amen!🙏🏼

    LAST THOUGHT

One of our team members recommended a book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller. So I downloaded in Audible to give a listen and boy did it deliver…

In this book, The Art of War by Steven Pressfield is referenced. Miller references Pressfield when he states how every creative person faces resistance when they try to do something good or when pointed towards a distant horizon. The harder the resistance, the more important the task must be. 🤯 Mind blown! Enemy attacks!

Donald (not Trump) goes onto to say (and I’m paraphrasing here) that there are forces in this world that doesn’t want us to create beautiful stories! But God wants us to create beautiful stories… so my take-away?

Lean into the resistance, trust God and remember Pastor David’s words to me …

Do not see yourself as small but that with God in your heart, you are big and can do GREAT things!

LOVE YOU ALL! Thanks for all the ♥️ and prayers for our team. Power in prayers.

    God is good.
