    And the journey begins...

    26 de dezembro de 2021, Índia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Since this was our first international experience, we didn't want to take chances with timing and we also wanted to avoid late night travel. So, even though our flight was at 9:00 in the morning, we left home at 12:45 a.m. and reached the airport by 1:20 a.m.

Another important task before we could check-in was to complete Rapid PCR tests at the airport. While waiting for the results, we spent our time planning for the upcoming days, as nothing was pre-planned apart from the flights and stays. It turned out quite productive, and I ended up booking a day-trip in Mauritius for one of the days on Viator.

Once the results were in, we completed the rest of the process - check-in, emigration and security. With quite some time left before boarding, we explored the international terminal at the Kolkata airport, visited a few shops, had some food, and of course, clicking few pictures to mark the beginning of something special.

  • First international flight...

    26 de dezembro de 2021, Emirados Árabes Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

After boarding, the flight took off from Kolkata at 9 a.m. (local time) and landed in Dubai at 12.45 p.m. (local time), marking the first leg of our international journey.

Everything about the flight felt new to us. The aircraft itself, the scale, and the overall setup were quite different from the domestic flights we were used to. The seating arrangement followed a 3-4-3 structure, which immediately caught our eyes. Each seat came with a pillow and a blanket, adding a level of comfort we hadn’t experienced before.

One of the most interesting parts was the personal screen in front of every seat, along with headphones provided to each passenger. It took us a little while to figure out how to use it, but once we did, we found a a whole range of options in it - movies, music, games, and even live camera feed from outside the aircraft.

We ended up spending a good portion of the flight catching up on sleep. We also enjoyed the in-flight snacks (which were included with the tickets) and explore the entertainment system. Watching a Harry Potter movie mid-air made the experience even more memorable.

  • Layover at Dubai...

    27 de dezembro de 2021, Emirados Árabes Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

With a change of flights in Dubai, we got down from the first aircraft and directly proceeded through security towards the boarding area. The process was quite seamless, and we didn’t have to worry about our check-in luggage as it was transferred by the airline itself and we were to collect it directly in Mauritius.

Dubai Airport felt massive the moment we stepped in. With a layover of around thirteen and a half hours, we decided to make the most it by exploring as much as we could. We walked through different sections, covered a lot of it, but still couldn't see it all. By the end, the size of the airport and long hours of walking finally catch up with us, and we finally settled near our boarding gate.

During our exploration, we visited several shops to get an idea of what we might want to pick up on our return journey - souvenirs, chocolates, baklava, and more. We also checked out a few restaurants along the way, figuring out what to eat during the layover.

The flight from Dubai took off at 3:00 a.m. (local time) and landed in Mauritius at 9:20 a.m. (local time), bringing us to the destination we had been waiting for.

This leg of the journey was quite similar to the previous one. We spent most of the time sleeping, occasionally waking up to continue (from the previous flight) watching Harry Potter while enjoying the in-flight snacks.

Towards the end of the flight, we were handed few forms to fill out, which were required during immigration. Since Mauritius is a visa-free destination for Indians, the process was smooth and hassle-free. And like that, we got our passports stamped for the very first time - a small but memorable milestone.

  • Checking into our honeymoon suite...

    27 de dezembro de 2021, Maurícia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

After completing all the formalities at the airport, we set off for our hotel at around 10:45 a.m. The cab ride turned out to be a long but pleasant one, taking about an hour and fifteen minutes through the Mauritian countryside. Aneesh, our cab driver, kept us engaged in conversation along the way, making the journey feel more comfortable and welcoming. The ride gave us our first glimpse of the island before arriving at our luxurious stay - Le Cardinal Exclusive Resort, a beachside hotel.

We were welcomed with refreshing tropical drinks, and after completing the check-in formalities, we entered our room at around 12:45 p.m. The room itself was an experience of its own. What stood out the most was the massive bathroom setup, with no locks and a bathtub placed almost between the bedroom and the bath area, making it feel very open and different from anything we had seen before.

We quickly freshening up, we planned to had out by 4:00 p.m. to explore some of the northern beaches. We skipped lunch that day but grabbed some snack before leaving. Before stepping out, we spent some time at the shack area of the hotel’s restaurant near the beach, enjoying a pizza while looking out at the turquoise ocean - a simple but perfect start to Mauritius.

We also spoke to the hotel staff to plan out where to go and how to get around. Based on their suggestions, we decided to visit two beaches along the north-west coast. We learned that the Triolet bus service running from Port Louis towards the northern part of the island would be convenient for both onward and return travel.

  • And then we met the ocean...

    📍 Grand Baie Public Beach

After stepping out of the hotel, we walked to the nearest bus-stop at Trou-aux-Biches. From there, we took a local bus to Grand Baie as planned, which was roughly a half-an-hour-long journey.

Apart from our cab ride and interaction with the hotel staff, this was our first real interaction with the locals. We did face a bit of difficulty while trying to converse, mainly because the pronunciation of place names was quite different from what we had expected. But that was the experience we had set out for.

Inside the bus, a local radio station was playing in the background, mostly in a language we couldn’t understand. What surprised us, though, was when a Bollywood song started playing. It felt unexpectedly familiar in a completely new place. Later, we came to know that Hindi is commonly used there, and Bollywood music is quite popular among them.

At Grand Baie, the beach felt quieter than expected. There weren’t many people around, and the shore was filled with small boats and catamarans. Even then, we made sure to step into the water, just to feel the ocean for the first time in Mauritius. After spending around fifteen minutes there, clicking a few pictures, we decided to move on to the next beach.

This beach felt completely different from the previous one. It was much more lively, with people actively enjoying the sea and spending time along the shore. The energy here was more vibrant and engaging.

Although we didn’t step fully into the water, we walked along the shoreline, letting the cool ocean waves touch our feet. It was a simple but refreshing experience.

We spent around thirty minutes here, soaking in the atmosphere, clicking pictures, and enjoying some ice cream from a beach-side truck before heading back.

From Pereybere, the journey back to Trou-aux-biches took around forty minutes by bus. After getting down, we slowly walked back to the hotel, taking in the surroundings at our own pace. The setting sun added a warm glow to everything around us, making the walk even more enjoyable. The roads were quiet, and we clicked pictures - especially with the beautiful bougainvillea flowers lining the streets, which seemed to be everywhere.

We reached back at around 6:30 p.m. After freshening up from the long day, we finally relaxed in our room, enjoying a cup of hot coffee while lying on the bed.

For dinner, we headed to the hotel restaurant, where we were warmly welcomed by the ever-smiling Dinnoo (Danish). Dinner was a full-course meal, included as part of our booking, and turned out to be a fulfilling end to the day.

After dinner, we called it an early night, knowing we had to wake up early the next morning for our planned trip with Viator.

  • Swimming with dolphins...

    28 de dezembro de 2021, Maurícia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

    📍 Tamarin Bay

It was almost an hour's trip from our resort to Tamarin Public Beach. A speedboat, scheduled for 7:30 a.m., was waiting to take us along with two other tourist groups - a family of four & a couple - into the bay for swimming and snorkeling. Akash pointed out that we were running a bit late and might not get enough time to change once we reached, so we quickly changed into our swimming outfits on the way in the cab. We also decided to grab food after this activity.

By the time we reached, the speedboat with the other tourists were already waiting just for us. They set off almost immediately as we arrived, heading into the bay.

Soon we reached the middle of the bay where groups of dolphins were swimming. I jumped into the water as instructed along with the other tourists, initially thinking it would be easy to swim alongside them. It turned out o be more challenging than expected, and life jackets were soon provided to those who needed them. We tried keeping up as the dolphins swam gracefully around us, often coming surprisingly close. We later learnt that they come up into the bay at night to rest, swimming even while they sleep.

After spending some time with the dolphins, we were taken to a quieter spot for snorkeling. It was my first experience and looking into the underwater felt surreal. We could see corals spread beneath us and schools of fish swimming all around, making the whole experience feel even more vivid. My partner was initially quite hesitant and chose to stay back on the boat. While waiting, she started feeling a bit sick, but once it settled, with enough encouragement from me and the other co-tourists, she gathered the courage to get into the water for a while and experience it herself.

The entire boat ride along with the activities lasted around one and a half to two hours. On the way back, we enjoyed the cool breeze and took in the beautiful views of the Mauritian mountains from Tamarin Bay. Once we reached the shore, we freshened up at a beach washroom and got ready to head towards the next spots.

📍 Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark

From Tamarin Bay, it was about an hour's drive to the geopark taking a scenic route along the southern coastline of the island. The ocean along this stretch appeared noticeably deeper blue, something that caught our attention and later influenced our plans for the next day. On the way, we stopped at a local bakery and picked up some food, which ended up being both our breakfast and lunch for the day.

We reached the park at around 11:30 a.m. The entry fee wasn’t included in our trip, so we purchased the tickets at the entrance before heading in. Our first stop was the Chamarel Waterfall, after which we hiked towards the Seven Colored Earth.

The place truly lived up to its reputation. The dunes, with their distinct layers of seven different colors - red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow - looked almost unreal and were fascinating to observe. Right beside the dunes, there was a small enclosure with giant tortoises, some of which were more than 150 years old.

We spent around forty-five minutes exploring the area, taking pictures, and simply soaking in the uniqueness of the place. On our way out, we stopped by a small gift shop inside the park and picked up a souvenir to remember the visit.

Standing there, we were greeted with a panoramic view of a vast, lush green canyon, dotted with small waterfalls that added to the beauty of the landscape.

We spent some quiet moments just soaking it all in, capturing a few pictures and letting the place sink in our memories. On our way out, we stopped on the souvenir shops at the entrance and also picked up a tropical fruit mango and enjoyed it while stepping out of the park.

  • Serenity on the hills...

    28 de dezembro de 2021, Maurícia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

📍 Ganga Talao - Grand Bassin Temple

Mauritius, being a volcanic island, has several dormant volcano craters. One of the most prominent among them holds a sacred lake nestled within an extinct volcano. It is one of the most sacred Hindu sites in Mauritius, with a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities along its banks.

From the Gorges, the temple was just a ten-minute drive away. On the way, we noticed a very wide road leading up the hill, but almost half of it was unused by vehicles and kept separate. Our guide, Akash, explained that part is reserved for the devotees who walk up to the temple, especially during Maha Shivaratri, when thousands from across the island makes the journey to collect water from the lake.

We were dropped at the gate of the temple and spent around twenty minutes exploring the temple complex. The place felt calm and peaceful, with only a few visitors offering prayers. Several idols were placed along the banks of the lake, open to the surroundings, adding to the spiritual atmosphere.

On our way back, we stopped at the parking area to see the 108-foot long statue of Lord Shiva, along with another towering statue of Lord Parvati, standing at an impressive height. We took some pictures there, but what stood out more was a small yet memorable moment. While clicking photos near the entrance lane, I didn't realize that a car had arrived and was waiting for me to move. The driver didn't even honk or rush - just patiently waited until I noticed. It felt like a small, but striking difference from the usual chaos of honking we are so used to at home - the crowded Indian streets.

At the centre of the crater was a dense patch of greenery. Standing along the edge, we looked out over panoramic views of the island, appreciating the vastness of the landscape shaped by these very volcanoes.

Very close to the crater, within the town, were two popular high-end shopping stops, located just five to ten minutes apart from each other.

The first stop was the workshop that felt like a living museum. We watched skilled artisans carefully crafting detailed ship replicas out of teak wood, showcasing remarkable precision and patience. The adjoining showroom displayed a wide range of models - from small decorative pieces to large, finely craft replicas. There was also a shop where visitors could buy these models, along with other maritime-themed souvenirs.

The second stop was boutique factory store known for its genuine cashmere products. Along with the cashmere garments, the store also featured some local liquor and few other local items available for purchase.

We spent about ten minutes at each spot, mostly exploring and observing, without making any purchase. These stops marked the end of our tour for the day at around 3:15 p.m., after which we began our journey back to the hotel.

At around 4:15 p.m. Akash dropped us back at the hotel. There was an additional charge for overtime beyond eight hours, which hadn’t been mentioned earlier. Still, without much discussion, we paid it and headed back to our room.

After freshening up from a long and activity-filled day, we stepped out to the hotel’s private beach area to catch the sunset. For about half an hour, we walked along the shore, soaking in the golden hues of the setting sun and capturing plenty of photos along the way.

In the evening, while relaxing, we planned for the next day. I tried booking a scuba diving experience through Viator, but no slots were available. With nothing confirmed, we decided to explore the southern beaches instead, influenced by the scenic drive along the southern coast earlier in the day. After discussing with the hotel staff, we booked a cab for the next day that would take us to the places we had shortlisted.

  • View inside the ocean through glass...

    29 de dezembro de 2021, Maurícia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    📍 Blue Bay Public Beach

From the north-western part of the island to south-eastern coast, it took a little over an hour to reach. On the way, we chatted with Arun and got to know some interesting details of Mauritius - from the numbering system of car plates to strict laws that help to keep the country clean, along with few other local insights.

We reached the beach at around 10:00 a.m., and among the various activities happening there, we decided to go for a glass-bottom boat ride into the ocean. It turned out to another new and exciting experience for us. The boat rider took us further into the sea where we witnessed stunning varieties of corals in large numbers - brain corals, staghorn locals (locally called chicken feet), ginger corals, and even some that resembled mushroom and potato. We saw through the vast coral reef, which acts as a natural barrier, stopping the strong ocean currents and keeping the waters near the beach calm and clear.

We also spotted many colorful fish swimming around the corals, creating lively underwater scene. At one point, the boat stopped at a spot where tourists from other boats were snorkeling. We chose not to snorkel this time, preferring instead to remain on the boat and soak in the breeze in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The boat rider gave us some bread and as soon as we threw it into the water, a huge school of fish rushed to the surface, creating a beautiful and energetic moment right beside out boat.

In total, the experience lasted about an hour. We clicked as many pictures as we could - of ourselves, the fish, and the corals - to capture and carry these memories with us.

After reaching back to the shore, we had a bit of difficulty finding our driver since our phones were not working and the parking area seemed slightly unorganized. But soon enough, we found him and moved on with our journey at around 11:30 a.m.

    📍 Gris Gris Public Beach

After a long drive of about forty-five from La Cambuse, we reached this beach located at one of the southern most points of the island. Unlike the calmer beaches, this one had a rugged charm with dark volcanic cliffs.

With no coral reefs to protect the shoreline, powerful ocean currents crashed directly onto the cliffs, splashing water all around, creating raw and mesmerizing scenes. Swimming is not allowed here due to the strong waves, but that only added to its untouched, wild character. Some tourists were seen exploring the cliffs and soaking in the views.

After spending some time walking around, we relaxed under a shaded spot near the viewpoint, which offered a wide panoramic view of the coastline. We spent around an hour here - exploring, unwinding, and simply listening to rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs.

This was another "untouched" beach of Mauritius, about a twenty-minute ride from Gris Gris. The beach was flanked by lush green trees and is known for its beautiful turquoise lagoon. There were only a handful of around, adding to the peaceful vibe of the place. In the distance, we could spot people kitesurfing and windsurfing in the steady coastal winds. We spent around twenty minutes here, simply soaking in the beauty and calmness.Leia mais

    📍 Mon Choisy Public Beach

Initially, we had planned to visit this beach for its stunning sunset views, but we reached at around 4:45 p.m., and there still quite some time left for sunset. So we bunked the idea and decided instead to spend some time sitting on a bench by the beach, enjoy the view and have some food, especially since it was our last stop and we hadn't eaten anything after breakfast. We grabbed a quick bite from an Arabian food truck nearby, which felt perfect for the moment. After relaxing for about half an hour, we headed back to the resort.
