  • Sintra

    27. september 2017, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

More touristicing this time we took the train to Sintra, a world heritage sight, to the north west of Lisbon, to see the Nacional Palacio de Sintra and Palacio de Pena. We also walked up to the Moorish Castle ruins, my feet are killing me, boating shoes were not the best idea! But the palaces were gorgeous. The Sintra palace dates from 1147 with adaptations along the way the most distinctive feature being the two 33m high kitchen chimneys. The Pena Palace is distinctive because of its colours and towers outside and painted stucco on the ceilings inside. It is one of the finest examples of Portuguese Romanticism. Here are just a few photos. Sadly as Sintra is high up we could see the west coast and the fog that still appears to be lurking there so tomorrow's trip might be a grey one again☹️Læs mere

  • Whale yes whales

    28. september 2017, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We saw whales, a pod passed us it took about an hour for them to pass, we saw about 8 but may have been more. First one was only 5m from boat when I we saw it, next one passed right under us and did it upside down. John had gone downstairs to make sarnies for lunch and suddenly there is a light patch under the boat ! Wasn’t till it, the whale , slowly tighter itself and I saw it’s eye I realised what had happened. That was a bit off putting! Awesome
Also during the night dolphins came and played in the wake and with the phosphorescence they looked like white torpedoes😀
Sorry yes I know photos would have been good but we were too busy watching them to go get cameras etc

  • Lagos

    29. september 2017, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

So when we left Lisbon the weather was sunny no fog in sight and the sea was flatish, so instead of going to Sisembra we decided to do a long leg and head straight for Lagos on the south coast. The guidebook book didn't have a lot to say about the marinas we were missing and the fog might reappear any day so why not. It took 22.5hours I am now shattered, we took 2hour shifts during the night so going to relax today. Will attach some photos of our departure from Lisbon to this post later saw some nice boats and the 'entire' Portuguese navy all 4boats😜Læs mere

We spent 3nights in Lagos not really doing a lot. But we caught up with Geoff and Gail (my old Beausie boss) we all went out for a meal on Fri eve to a lovely restaurant right on the beach and on Sunday we visited their apartment which is also very nice and with a huge balcony. Gail cooked main course and I provided home made carrot and pineapple cake both were delicious. On Monday we left and anchored in a lagoon near Alvor only about 30mins along the coast but beautiful.Læs mere

  • Albufeira and Alvor

    6. oktober 2017, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Hello again, I'm getting lazy, the sun is still shining and sky is blue. Only a few of things worthy or note to tell you about.
The whales we saw, we are fairly sure we're Brydes Whales
The night before we left Alvor john had already gone to bed and I was getting there when we heard a very loud scraping noise and assumed that as it was dark some idiot had just run into us. Opps, no we had actually run into someone we had managed to trip our superdooper Rocna anchor and it was dragging, we managed to hit the only other boat in the anchorage rather than ending up on a sand bank. Needless to say I got little sleep that night after that but the anchor had held fine for the previous 36hours, we have to assume that as we swung round on it in the afternoon with the tide change, that it tripped.
Just one last thing was that on our way to Albufeira we saw a submarine I tried to take a photo but you still can't really see it, we used the binoculars.
The cliffs to Albufeira were dramatic, and as you can see the buildings in the marina are all pastels a bit twee but nice. We’d visited the town before for a winter break a few years ago so didn’t need to do any sightseeing. We met a German guy who’d been in the marina for 5 years he had a lot of stories.

  • Ilha da Culatra near Faro

    6. oktober 2017, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After 2 relaxing nights in the marina we are anchoring again, the currents here are far less than at Alvor so shouldn't be any dragging. We are in a nature reserve but there are still lots of other boats anchored and moving around the lagoons. Tomorrow we plan to take dinghy to Olhoa. We have just met Canadians who we kept bumping into in Spanish Rias, they have been in the Lagoon for a week and are loving it.Læs mere

  • Olhao

    7. oktober 2017, Portugal ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Today we decided to take the dinghy to town, it was a spring low so all the various mud and sand banks were visible as well as lots of birds, we saw a stork, egrets, spoonbills, curlews and lots of different gulls.
When we got to town we realised it was market day with lots of extra fruit and veg stools. The local produce seems to focused on bees there was wax, honey, honey cake, pollen and liqueur. Also a lot of pomegranates and woven baskets. After a little shopping and wandering around we decided to stay for lunch before heading back to offload the shopping and to go to the beach.

  • Ayamonte

    13. oktober 2017, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

OK so yes we stayed a long time anchored near Olhoa and although it was peaceful and free the reason we stayed was my toothache. It had been getting worse so on the Monday I chose a surgery and made an appointment sadly I needed root canal work but the abscess needed treatment first. After a couple of tries we established that as I wasn't going home in the next 2weeks I would need treatment locally so I decided that dentists was as good as anywhere and signed up. So after four different painful appointments it was all done and on Friday morning we could leave. I would like to go back and explore again when not in pain as would be lovely to kayak around and see a little more. We did on an appointment free day take the dinghy around the visible bit of the lagoon and watch a large cargo ship nearly run over a bunch of sailing dinghies, there was a lot of horn blowing. On the same day we also went across the island and did a little bit of wave jumping and falling over in the Atlantic surf. That's when John lost his watch and I found the lovely shells.
Like I said we left Friday morning and headed for the Rio Guadiana on the Portuguese/Spanish border, we had hoped to go to Tavira but they are doing work on the Marina at the moment so we were advised to avoid it. The day was calm and sunny but we had to be about 3miles off to avoid shoals and fish farms but there wasn't a lot to see anyway.
Ayamonte Marina is on the Spanish side of the river and almost empty as they put up their prices a few years ago and locals haven't forgiven them yet, but it was clean and secure with a number of foreign boats including some Brits so we had a natter as you do. We decided that evening to join in the Spanish trend and go walking around town on a Friday evening though on reflection we didn't really dress up enough. We were also surprised at the number of Irish people that were around, there must have been a big time share drive at some point. On Saturday we wandered around a bit more and then took the ferry to Portugal, Vila Real de Santo Antonio where there was a market, not fruit and veg but pottery, scarves, jewellery, slippers leather goods, the Portuguese town was very different to the Spanish which was small narrow streets, it was grid iron with wide cobbled promenades lots of plazas and everyone and their mates was out and about but not as much English being spoken. We managed to buy john a new watch, which is still working!

  • Alcoutim

    15. oktober 2017, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

About 20miles inland up the Guardiana river is Alcoutim on the Portuguese side and Sanlucar on the Spanish, our pilot book said the river was not too be missed so here we are. It is very peaceful but the wind has picked up as it said it would and we and everyone else are swinging around a fair bit but if things go as expected the wind will ease tonight and we will go off in the kayaks to explore even further up the river tomorrow. We saw a lot of herons and egrets on the way up as well as large mostly white jellyfish with short stubby tentacles. The other thing of note is that the forecast says there may even be a little rain tomorrow which would be lovely to help cool things down.Læs mere

  • Isla de Canela

    19. oktober 2017, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Well we had some interesting moments while on the River Guardiana, that first afternoon there was a British yacht a Moody that was swinging around a heck of a lot and it turned out was dragging his anchor around, he bumped a wooden boat in front a couple of times and was then out in the middle of the channel with anchor down and engine going, not sure what he was up to then. After about an hour he motored up river anchor still down and faffed for another hour before settling. That evening on the low tide we saw a lot more birds and some other fish possibly trout trying to breathe air, jumping repeatedly out the water. After a quiet night the next morning we rowed to the towns and walked up to the 2castles but they were closed, views from Spanish side, which was a lot higher were very good, then coffee and as tide had turned we rowed back for lunch then launched kayaks to go upriver with the tide, we scrumped some apples and pomegranates. John has not deseeded a pomegranate before! When we got back to the boat the wind had picked up and the wind with the tide appeared to have caused us to drag our anchor but it had re secured. We moved back to our original spot for the evening and the wind died away.
There was a little rain but not much over night and next day we spent doing boat stuff I was sanding and varnishing John replaced a load of deck plugs that evening we headed to a place called the beach bar where we had been told people gathered on a Tuesday evening. It was a little odd with imported white sand on a bend on a stream that was damned to keep tide up but very nice for a coffee and a beer only problem was the return boat journey we had to do in the dark as we hadn't thought to bring a torch nor had we put on the boats anchor light, but we made it ok.
Early the following morning I woke with a start I could hear the anchor dragging quick up and on deck but no we were where we were supposed to be so what was the noise, then I noticed behind us and still heading down river the same British yacht that had been dragging before, am just glad he missed us and our anchor on his way past. There was a torch light but no noise of an engine we couldn't understand what he was doing? The next morning we could still see him he had stopped drifting just a little further down having miraculously missed everyone on his impromptu journey.
We headed off back down towards the coast we saw a lot more birds, mostly waders as it was a falling tide and we stopped off at a disused pontoon by a golf resort, we had a little mooch on shore but couldn't get far. GNR aka guns and roses or the Portuguese marine police visited us but all was good they loitered on the pontoon for about 2hours which was disconcerting but OK. Wonderfully quiet night with almost 12hours sleep and in the morning there were cows, cattle egrets, spoonbills, herons, plovers, terns and more only metres from the boat. We left on the low tide not realising just how low it was there was 1foot under the keel as we came off the pontoon, and headed only a short distance along the coast to a marina village so we could shop wash recharge etc before continuing on tomorrow.
First three photos are of our anchorage last night, four and five are of what we think was a practice for a fuel spill which was happening as we came down the river and 6 is what the plotter was showing us as we came down apparently we were on dry land.

  • Cadiz

    24. oktober 2017, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

So from Isla de Canela we cruise to Mazagon where we did nothing more exciting than some shopping. Then on to Rota in the Bay of Cadiz it was a lovely day so we traveled a little further than normal. On Sunday we took a ferry to Cadiz and wandered around, the history bit is on a Peninsula so nowhere is too far away. We visited the cathedral with the yellow done and the tower. There was an audio guide which was great but a little too heavy on details, the cathedral had 10chapels and the guide told you in detail about each one, including every picture, statue and benefactor. It also told you about the main cathedral and choir, wooden carved seating, which were stunning and the underlying crypt where a famous Cadiz poet called Jose de Falla is buried (with some other people). I took a photo of the theatre named after him as proof. There is also a photo of where we had our late Lunch.Læs mere

  • Seville

    24. oktober 2017, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

We decided to have a holiday within our holiday and spent a couple of days in Seville, there are so many beautiful buildings and plazas to see. We took a tour of the Torre del Oro and the bull ring Plaza del Toros y Museo de la Real Maestranza de Caballeria and a hop on hop off bus tour of the city. The Plaza de Espana was really something so was the metropole parasol. In total we spent, over a period of 27 hours, which included 14 in bed, 10hours walking around, most of the rest of the time we were sat eating, food was also wonderful. Sadly we didn't see the inside of the cathedral or the Alcazar as queues very long and very pricey, or so we felt.
Wind has picked up and is likely to stay high for a few days so might take a trip to Jerez or Santa Maria tomorrow. But the other exciting news is we have booked our condor tickets so will be in Guernsey for 2weeks from 20 December, I am looking forward to seeing everyone. John says he is to, his face just doesn't show it.😉

  • Gibraltar

    28. oktober 2017, Gibraltar ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

So we are now on the Rock, after leaving Rota we travelled 40 miles to Barbate for the night then 40 miles to Gibraltar on both days it started well then the wind picked up and was on the nose, but good news I wasn't actually ill although I did feel a bit rough. The scenery travelling from Barbate to Gibraltar was more interesting than it's been for a while, there are hills now it's been fairly flat since Albufeira, and we could be much closer in as no longer shoals within 2 miles of the shore. This is the first time we have had to moor up Mediterranean style and it was a lot less painful than we expected even going in stern too, we didn't hit anything which surprised us, but getting a new bow thruster should make this manoeuvre easier. We have had a quick wander around Main Street and saw an M&S, Debenhams, Mothercare and Morrisons as well as some typical pub names The Rock Arms, O'Reillys etc. We will be proper tourists tomorrow but don't worry we will be careful of the monkeys.
On the way to Gibraltar you pass Tarifa a place that we have read has the highest suicide rate in Europe and apparently 360 out of 365 days of high winds, it was certainly blowing when we went past, the African coast was only about 8 miles away. We fueled up in Gib on our way to the Marina cost GBP45.9p/l but we did have to watch out for the plane landing next door.

  • The Rock

    30. oktober 2017, Gibraltar ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Spent today with an old friend from Guernsey, Dave Bruce, and he have us a personalised guided walking tour of the Rock. We walked to the Moorish castle, Siege tunnels, Windsor bridge, Jews gate, Mediterranean steps, and St Michaels Cave. It was a great way to see the island and to learn a lot more about it as well as working up a decent sweat climbing the steps. We are now planning on riding the cable car to the top tomorrow and visiting the cave and tunnels on the way back down. Here are pictures of the stunning views and of the famous monkeys. Will hopefully get some more photos to show you. We took a cycle ride around the edgeish yesterday, I say ish because in some cases you are actually in the Rock rather than on the edge as you have to pass through three different tunnels, we passed some of the less touristy sites as well including the crematorium tip and the scrapyard. A lot of the current Rock is actually reclaimed land you might be able to see the old walls in some of the pictures and anything outside of these is on reclaimed land. Most of the lowlying land to the North and West is reclaimed only the old docks used to be there.Læs mere

  • Cueta (Spanish enclave)

    3. november 2017, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

OK so we decided that when we left Gibraltar we really should a bit of culture before hitting the Costa del Sol so we tried to contact the marinas in Cueta and Smir, just south of Cueta in Morocco proper. Sadly they weren't answering phones or email. We decided to try Cueta first as it was actually Spanish and then if we could reach them go to Smir. The Straits crossing started out OK nice and smooth, but then the water got confused pushing and pulling in various directions then we arrived at the shipping channel proper and we had to start zigzagging to avoid the huge cargo ships and tankers and as if that wasn't fun enough the swell was coming broadside, hilarious. We were also advised, well not us specifically, to be on the look out for an inflatable off the coast of morocco containing about 55 people. Didn't see them. But alls well that ends well and we made it to Cueta, and were assisted to our 'stern to' mooring. I had hoped that there would be a Moroccan feel to the place but not really, a lot of the workers obviously came across the border every day and there were a lot of statues and some lovely buildings but it didn't feel very foreign. We did how ever find a Guernsey registered boat.!! We still couldn't reach Smir Marina and the staff at Cueta were unable to help so that coupled with a forecast that said we either left tomorrow or not for a couple of days as the wind was picking up, this new coupled with charges of almost 40E a night meant we decided to head back across the Straits the next day. A very similar crossing except we were to lookout for a fibreglass boat with 10 people onboard and also had to avoid the live rounds that HMS Simtar would be firing towards the East of Europa point! It was a relief to arrive off the Costa del Sol we chose La Duquesa as supposed to be a smaller marina in a less developed area and a little cheaper. It was all of these things and they gave us a bottle of wine which John described as OK. Will try to add photos when internet link stronger.Læs mere

Well it's a lot nicer than I expected probably helped by the fact that we are very out of season so the place isn't very busy but neither is it deserted. the waterfront is as you would imagine, full of high rise buildings but the hill/mountainous backdrop is impressive but the old town with its narrow winding streets and green plazas is very easy to enjoy. • Ronda

    8. november 2017, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We took the bus, well 2 buses to go to Ronda up,in the hills elevation 738m apparently. Local Bus trip was the traumatic part as although we arrived at the stop early the bus was very late and proceeded to do a couple of out and back legs on the way to the main station, we arrived with 1 minute to spare and still had to buy the tickets but we needn't have worried the coach from Torremolenos to Seville via Ronda was also late. After a small diversion via San Pedro we headed up into the hills gradually making our winding way. 75 mins later and we were there, just a 5 min stroll to the 'new bridge' over the 120m gorge, that takes you to the old town. As you can see there was some stunning scenery, we visited the local museum to read about the history of Ronda and also something they call the mine.
We did a lot of walking while in Ronda, we walked all the way down New Bridge and back up as well as to Old Bridge and to the Roman bridge which was in fact Moorish which was next to the Moorish baths.

Photo 5 shows an Irish boat in the marina and his small satellite dish fixed to the quay! Photo 6 is an automated sex shop, only on the Costa's!!

Well we did it we went to Malaga, it's big both in height and area. To get there the bus drove through Torremolinos which really is a bit of a dive. During our time in Malaga we stayed in the old town district and yes Chris you would be proud of us we went to the Picasso Museum. I can admit that there are 2 we only went to one and I know he is very famous and his work sells for millions but.... we weren't especially impressed. I quite liked the jugs/urns and john was most impressed with his early work as it most closely resembled reality. Sorry there are no photos because as you can imagine photography is not allowed, but have taken piccy of the brochure. The majority of the rest of our day was spent walking around the Alcazaba de Malaga and Castillo de Gibralfaro both very impressive to look at and with wonderful views. But we did see the Roman Amphitheater and the outside of the Cathedral and a squirrel. As I have lots of Photos I will put 6 more on a separate post.Læs mere

We are nearly at our over wintering spot, we spent last night at Caleta de Velez an active Mediterranean fishing port with a marina, yes apparently there are still fish in the Med. The town by the port was sandwiched between 2 big tourist towns but had still managed to retain its Spanish feel. We are now in Marina del Este, its very pretty and is only a marina no fishing, we are out of season so some places are closed but still pretty we have walked over the hill to 'town' views are lovely as you will see tomorrow when we go back with camera. After Caleta the shoreline became more rugged with the hills being on the coast so not as many towns or houses. This area is the garden of Europe and on the flatish bits of land there were poly tunnels for growing, here are some photos of the coastline.

    19. november 2017, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

So while in Este we visited La Herradura just over the headland, via the lighthouse for some photos, and a lovely lunch. From there we were going to go to Motril but as we got near it became apparent that it was a small marina but in a bigger port and there was lots of traffic including cargo ships being loaded and unloaded, so as the weather was great, I was in a bikini, we headed on to Adra. We have been the only overnight visiting yacht for four nights and unlike the other Med Marinas it is really calm, and we can go alongside rather than stern to, sadly there are no loos or showers near the marina only in the port office (10mins away) but that's fine, there is water and electricity. It isn't a tourist destination at all no hotels and only a couple of restaurants but a couple of good supermarkets but loving the peace and quiet.
For E1 each we visited the Old Smelting tower, the bomb shelter tunnels, the museum showing the towns history and an interactive museum about the local wetlands, absolute bargain.

  • Almerimar marina our home for the winter

    30. november 2017, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Sorry I have been so slack, after four nights as the only boat in Adra Marina we moved along the coast in beautiful sunshine and no wind to Almerimar. This is where the boat will stay now till we continue our travels in March of 2018. The marina is large and we have already joined the local live aboard community joining in coffee mornings, quizzes and walks. As we arrived here almost 2 weeks ahead of schedule we have managed to get a fair amount of external, above the waterline work done, on a steel boat this has meant a lot of sanding most manually but we have now treated the ex-rust and are painting and varnishing. Communications will be a lot less frequent now as not much happening. Well i say that but our social schedule is already filling up I think we might be busier here than we ever were at home in Guernsey and as much as I have enjoyed chatting to john over the last 7 months it is nice to have other people to talk to.
After a lovely first week of sunshine we have just had 2days of rain !! I mean really we're in the south of Spain for goodness sake. But due to be sunny and warmer, around 18 degrees again tomorrow, but at least the poor weather today meant I could go shopping without feeling guilty about the jobs I should have been doing ;-) back to the grindstone tomorrow.
Condor have sent the reminder that we are sailing in 3weeks, fab can't wait.
    Will add some photos soon.

Well yesterday was yet another lovely day John took photos of the sunset. Today was looking pretty good too, up till about 15:00, but then as forecast the wind really picked up, we weren't on board then though because we had gone on a lovely foothills walk inland from Almeria in shorts and t-shirt we walked up a dry river gorge very spaghetti western then along the hilltop, ridge views were incredible and it was almost deserted we saw 2cars 4trail bikes and 4 walkers over the entire 4 hour walk. But we are now on a permanent list as the winds are pushing us, forecast is for ave wind speeds of 54km/h, with gusts up to 90km/h (John says this is 56-60 miles/h) should be a noisy night and then to make things more fun it is supposed to pour down tomorrow as well as being windy.☹️ Oh well home to the good weather soon😉Læs mere
