Believe you can and you’re halfway there

    September 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Boadilla to Carrion de los Condes
    Day 18 - 26km

Well! We are half way to our destination goal of Santiago!! And it feels great!🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🤩🤩
After a nice pilgrims breakfast at our hotel, we were on the path before sunrise,(which is not hard as the sun doesn’t get up till 8 😉). The day started looking good but a fog rolled in and chilled things down for a while. We chose to walk the alternate route beside a river instead of by the highway, which was lovely, albeit 2kms longer. 🙄The landscape is starting to change as we are in the Meseta. Not so hilly and a bit barren in places.
We have made many friends already, which we meet up with at coffee stops and drinks, and meals at the end of the day, and have found everyone very friendly. Every day we encounter many pilgrims and locals, and we hear a constant shout out to us, wishing us “Buen Camino”. Really lovely. 😍
Our Spanish is getting better and I can even get them to understand my half strength coffee most of the time. 😏However, as we get further on, we are finding English more widely spoken, saving us from the daily charades challenge of making ourselves understood !! 😆

    The Walk of life...

    September 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Carrion - Terradillos de los Templarios
    Day 19 - 26km

So far, we have wandered through amazing rolling hills and conjured up pictures of Julie Andrew's running down the valley singing 🎵
    The hills are alive 🎵
We have wandered into Burgos, through the fashionable district, looking very much like the sweaty pilgrims which we were, and felt we fitted in like Crocodile Dundee as he walked the streets of New York...
We have wondered into deserted towns, pictured the tumbleweed rolling before us and felt like we were in a westen movie and about to have a showdown with the sheriff...
Today however, we felt like Forest Gump, who woke up one day and just went... and went and went on.... 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️
We are in the Mesta, the land is barren...the road was looong ...🙄 The one saving grace was a coffee/food van in the middle of our day .
Staying in a cool spot though and just had a lovely meal... and after a 31km day, a 29km day and a 26 km day in a row, we have just a measley, teeny weeny 23kms tomorrow 😌 🤣😳.

Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

    September 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Terradillos to Bercianos del Real Camino
    Day 20 - 23 km

Yes it was a wet start to our day! 🌧️
We had a late start trying to sit out the rain but left around 9.45. We encountered rain for about the first hour but found a coffee shop and managed to change into dry clothes to carry on our walk.
The walk today was not very exciting, most of it beside the motorway, but had a nice stop with fellow pilgrims for lunch.
As we said before the countryside has changed and we are finding the last part of the day is a good time to loose ourselves in our music.
Our accommodation tonight is great. We are at a very modern Albergue and have just finished another Pilgrim meal.
The Weather forecast tells us no more rain for our trip so we are happy about that. 😊

These Boots Are Made For Walkin...

    September 22, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Bercianos - Mansilla de las Mulas
    Day 21 - 26km

We had a great day on the trail! We were both feeling fighting fit and raring to go. 😝
Even though we walked into a descent head wind , we had a galloping pace on, and the kms flew by. We had some great coffee stops, really enjoyed our catchups with our many pilgrim friends...met an 87 year old walking the whole way to Santiago, and he lived in Dunedin up to 15 years ago!!
Arrived in town and couldn't find any life about, ( as is so often the case when we arrive at Siesta time! ) Shutters down, deserted streets, and silence...🤫
Have been to a local supermarket, found tortilla, salad and wine, 🥂🥂🍷🍷and plan a night in!'
We are very excited about our rest day in Leon coming up!! 🥂👯‍♀️🥳🥳💃💃

    Mansilla to Leon
    Day 22 - 18 km

    Well nearly…
We headed out this morning at 8 am and we’re greeted with a beautiful morning, although just a little bit cold. No wind or rain so it was looking like a perfect day. We only had 18km to go today so that boosted our spirits. We met with a few Camino friends along the way which made the journey fun. Arrived at Leon before 1 so after a shower and change we headed out for drinks and lunch.
We are staying in the old town which today, being Saturday, was full of life. The different town squares were teaming with people and we had a lovely time soaking up the atmosphere. There was a Russian Peasant festival on in one square, markets in another and a fashion parade and dance show at our last stop to top off the night. All in all a great start to our day off tomorrow. ☺️

    Lazy Day in Leon...

    September 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    Rest Day - Leon
    Day 23

Such a cool day just being tourists. 😁
After an earlyish trip to the laundromat, our days work was done ✔ and we were off to explore!
First stop the Cathedral! We gave up trying to capture it all in photos, and decided to try and commit it to our memories in the hope that we will never forget it's grandeur. ⛪
After a breakfast of croissant de chocolate ( our choices were limited...🙄) we explored the old Town, then hopped on a city tourist train which we really enjoyed, and which saved our legs!! Whilst on the train we spotted markets!!! Needless to say a couple of hours were whiled away there!!
Beaut lunch of some more very tasty tapas,😋
A couple of cheeky rosè wines in the sunshine 🌞, bliss. Home for a snooze before dinner. 😴

    Life is a Highway…

    September 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Leon to San Martin del Camino
    Day 24 -25km

It was a lovely day for a walk today. We woke up to beautiful blue skies again. Leaving Leon at 8 we passed by the Cathedral for one final look then went through town, onto the river, and then spent the next 8 km ambling through the surrounding towns.
Not one of our favourite walks today as we had to walk beside the motorway for most of the time however the time went fast, meeting new pilgrims and stopping at cafes and hotels, and we soon found our way to our Albergue.
Our Albergue has a very rustic feel to it with a vege patch and chickens running around. The lady who runs it is very vibrant and we had a lovely home cooked pilgrims meal tonight with new pilgrim friends from Germany, Canada, South Korea and The Netherlands. ☺️

What a difference a day makes...

    September 26, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

San Martin del Camino to Astorga
    Day 25 - 24 km

What a fabulous days walk! The first few kms were beside the highway, but before long we were back on our beautiful trail 👣 which led us up and down, through lovely towns, and spoit us with the views again! One of the highlights ( apart from the views) was the lovely offerings of free food and sustainance to the pilgrims , we were especially grateful when we had just finished a long 7km haul, uphill and in the hot sun, these lovely people were happy to provide a beautiful resting spot, and a feast of amazing food, all the while someone was playing the guitar in the background 😍 bliss...( donations accepted 😉)
Astorga is a beautiful town, the Cathedral spectacular and the building beside designed by Gaudi is very impressive. Great atmosphere here and many restaurants and shops to explore ( If we had the energy...) We are staying in a nice unit just off the square tonight, so decided to have a nice meal in, and a wine 🍷 🍷perfect. 😉

    Climb Every Mountain…

    September 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    Astorga to Foncebaden
    Day 26 - 26 km

After a lovely stay in Astorga we started the day around 8 and was welcomed with another amazing sunrise. The first few kms were beside roads again but we soon started up the country pathways. The terrain has changed again from the flat fields and farmlands to more rolling hills and scrub land. We spent most of the day slowly climbing. The last 5kms was extremely tough but we are nearly at the top and the views were again amazing. We are actually as high now as we were on our first couple of days in the Pyrenees. Only 2km climb tomorrow before the descent. After booking into our Albergue we had another great night with fellow pilgrims.
The weather again was sunny and we are struggling with the fact that we are only getting a tan on one side as the sun is always on our left. Something to work on in the two weeks we are holidaying afterwards⛱️👙🌊☀️😉

    Take my breath away...

    September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    Foncebaden to Molinaseca
    Day 27 - 19 kms

Well, the downhill decent into Molinaseca certainly took our breath away!! It was so spectacular with its views of the mountains, but very hard going on an incredibly steep decline, loose rock and large trip hazards... lots of concentration required! Hats off, and major respect for the elderly and more challenged pilgrims who have made this journey before us 👏 you are freaking awesome. 🤩
Another glorious sunrise 🌅, coffee stop in the most beautiful spot... mountain views to die for... and then the down... very steep!!
Such a gorgeous town we are staying in, we had a lovely meal tonight overlooking the riverside, very chilled now and ready for a big 31 kms tomorrow. We're going great 🥰🥰
