Ride for Resilience: 7500km for Debby & our Nurses

Andy and Judah - father and son - are cycling across Canada (Victoria to St Johns - 7500km) to support the mental health of our nation's nurses. Debby, grand/ma, is a nurse who has battled with mental health. Her resilience is our inspiration! Read more

Nesbitt, Manitoba - Where it all goes down...

    May 29 in Canada ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

We went out of our way to ride into - dare I say pilgrimage toward - the metropolis of Nesbitt, Manitoba, in honour of a dear colleague and friend.

PS: Check this out! Today we passed the $10,000 mark in funds raised for Canada's nurses. Thanks for all your support! It's been a privilege to tell something of my mom's story as we've met people. Sadly we met no people in Nesbitt ;) https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/ride-for-r…Read more

  • Ride Day #17 - Broadview, SK to Aspen Grove, MB

    May 28 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Another provincial border! Saskatchewan's roads and winds were jarring - to say the least! But the hospitality was second to none. Where to start with all the Sask-love? Debbie's friend Mary-Beth hosted us our first night in the province in her cabin last minute, we enjoyed not one, but two, great visits with old friends Jason and Emily and their girls, were served a wonderful meal by another Eritrean family in Regina with connections in Oxford, and spent three nights with Roberta and James - who were way too kind in more ways than one!Read more

  • Ride Day #16 - Regina to Broadview (in reverse!)

    May 27 in Canada ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

"The strongest trees bend with the wind." My brother Carl sent me that quote, related as it is to our theme of resilience, just before we commenced the ride. It came to mind, boxed round the ears as we were by the wind yesterday, as we took a different tac to completing today's distance. And it worked! Check out the video to hear more...Read more

  • Ride Day #15 - Caronport to Regina

    May 26 in Canada ⋅ 🌬 31 °C

Take the Rockies any day. We were worried about the heat today, and did have a persistent afternoon temperature of 35C showing up on the bike computer. But that was manageable. The 20-33km headwind was a different story! We'd take the Rockies again over that any day! It didn't relent from 10am-5pm. We also had to briefly take shelter as a dark thunder and lightning storm passed over the highway. We made it! But had planned for an easier day and got one of our most extreme yet. Wonderfully, we closed the day with a wonderful visit with an Eritrean family related to friends we have in Oxford. We're rethinking the plan for tomorrow given the headwind is forecast again!Read more

  • Ride Day #14 - Gardiner Dam to Caronport

    May 23 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Hard to believe that we've completed our second full week of riding now! It was lovely to roll into Caronport with Judah Saturday, and show him around Julie's and my old stomping grounds (we lived there for the first five years of our marriage, before he was born), and to visit old friends Jason and Emily and their lovely girls. Debbie and Glen then hauled us and our trusty steeds up to Tisdale, SK, to visit with Julie's sister Laura, her husband Jerad, and some of Judah's precious cousins. Our first double rest day off Sunday and Monday. Good to take time calling Julie and the girls, mom, and siblings Jen and Carl through the weekend.

PS: Now with a stable internet connection, I've managed to upload some videos to older posts below too...

  • Ride Day #13 - Brock to Gardiner Dam

    May 22 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

This was a great day of riding. We had planned to stay in Danielson Provincial Park just beyond the Gardiner Dam, but the campsite was full up for the weekend. Debbie, resourceful as she is, knew her friend Mary Beth had a cottage nearby and called after we left for the morning. Mary Beth kindly came down from Saskatoon to not only open her lovely cottage for the night for us, but to also host us. Thank you Mary Beth!!Read more

  • Ride Day #10 - Airdrie to Drumheller

    May 19 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

What was it that attacked the tent? We had a solid ride from Airdrie to Drumheller, and were in need of some good rest. The campsite was serene, and promised a peaceful sleep, and it was - until about 12:45am...I awoke with a start to a twang of the tent string near my head. I immediately knew it was intentional, and personal - not the wind. My first thought was that it was a person - so I was wide awake instantly. But then there was a snap at my feet, a quick tug of my sleeping bag at my feet - in the tent! I sat up with a start and saw the shadow of some kind of animal pacing back and forth outside the tent, and I realised the tent had already been ripped open. The animal had another go at getting in the corner of our tent. I couldn't see it, but grabbed the top bag to Judah's bike, and started hammering at the gap yelling 'Get lost!' At this point, Judah awoke and - to my great pride - started to arm himself with a knife and bear spray! The animal had yet another go, and I hammered away again with his bike bag, swinging in the dark. Whatever it was, it didn't make a sound. After it was clear it was gone, Judah and I emerged from the tent ready for war, to find bags we had in the tent six feet away. There was no food, but we thing our water bottles - which have carb powder in them - may have attracted. I think it was a fox. Judah thinks a cayote. One old wise local at a diner suspected a small mountain cat. Whatever it was, it was very fast, sharp, and persistent! Given the dinosaur legacy of Drumheller, I think we best assume it was a Velociraptor we successfully repelled...Read more

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! Weeks 0 & 1 Done

    Support our cause: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/ride-for-r…

8 days of riding over 2 weeks (2 days in Week 0; 6 in Week 1). 1085km cycled in total distance. 9050m climbed. The 2 major Hwy#1 mountain passes defeated (Rogers Pass and Kicking Horse Pass). 1 province behind us. Lots of new friends made, and over $7000 raised for the Canadian Nurses Foundation, already! Many, many thanks!

Watch this update from just beyond Kicking Horse Pass, at the border of BC and Alberta...

Corrections to the video, and an addition:
    - We stayed with Stephan and Colleen in Vernon, not Revelstoke. It's all a blur!
    - By the time of posting this video, we are closer to halfway toward or fundraising goal, rather than 1/3!
+ And, I need to mention my son Judah. There's no man I'd rather ride with, and I certainly couldn't have made it this far this fast without his patient support of the old man!

  • Ride Day #8 - From Golden into Grim....

    May 16 in Canada ⋅ ❄️ 1 °C

From Golden into Grim....This turned out to be an extreme days in more ways than one. We had an ambitious aim at the outset: get over the highest point of the trip - Kicking Horse Pass at the border of BC and Alberta - and then descend but for a long distance, attempting not only the highest climb but also 160km distance as we sought Canmore. The morning was hard, with a big climb out of Golden, but then it got harder still with cold rain and snow. We met Debbie and Glen in Field, warmed our toes and, after changing socks, I put my feet in thin bags to try and keep them dry. It snowed hard through the ascent to Kicking Horse Pass but then, we reasoned, the weather would chill out a bit on the descent, enabling us to make it to Canmore in increasing sunshine. Not so! The snow and freezing rain intensified as we descended, so we called it about 20K earlier than Canmore, stopping our first full week of riding in Banff. We couldn't have made it this far this fast without Debbie and Glen's support along the way. And we are so grateful to all those who have encouraged. Thank you!Read more

  • Ride Day #7 - Revelstoke to Golden

    May 15 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

A castle in the clouds, and bro brings the jet fuel! Now we were meant to tent in Revelstoke, but Judah and I discovered upon arrival that Debbie and Glen had very generously upgraded us to a cabin. A castle in the clouds! Then, in the morning before heading off to Golden, my brother Carl visited - driving two hours first thing to reach us by 730am - and bringing energy gels and carb powder, as we had already tore through our supply of jet fuel. We needed Carl's encouragement, as it was to be a hard rainy morning. By the time we met Glen and Debbie at Roger's Pass, the day had turned lovely, but then it got blustery again. We were exhausted by the time we reached Golden. A very hard day, which we couldn't have done without all the practical support!Read more

  • Ride Day #6 - Vernon to Revelstoke

    May 14 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

The day of 100 rainbows. The ride out of Vernon was GORGEOUS! The wind was at our backs and we had long gradual descents for a good 70km. Early on we had our first Tim Horton's donuts of the road trip, and our next memorable stop was at the Last Spike site for the Canadian Pacific Railway, 70km in. With 40km to go to Revelstoke, the weather was clearly turning. For the next 20km we were soaked through, but then the sun suddenly broke out. As it did, every vehicle that passed us - and the highway was busy! - left a spray of mist behind that cast a long rainbow for us off each bumper. I'd be surprised if the conditions were ever just right to see such a cascade of highway rainbows ever again. While riding, I also prayed that there would be five new donations to the Canada Helps page today, and there were six! Thank you!Read more

  • Ride Day #5 - Penticton to Vernon

    May 13 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Whoa the wet! Upon arrival in Vernon we were told that there hadn't been rain like this day - with the whole Okanagan valley socked in with rain - for over a year. A good day for a bike ride! It was still beautiful though, and our hosts for the evening gave us great food and warm beds - and let us do our laundry to boot!Read more

  • Ride Day #4 - Princeton to Penticton

    May 12 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

This day started great, with a lovely call with Julie and the girls, as we wished Julie a happy birthday! Things took a turn quickly though. We had this ride down as not-too-hard. But 20-30km headwinds in the morning made even the long gradual descents tutors in the definition of resilience! But Glen and Debbie passed us around lunchtime and bought us samosas in Kerimos - refreshing our outlook. Then we traded the wind for the beating sun. Thankfully, the final descent into Penticton was fast and fun. I wish I had a picture of Judah and I owning the highway as we bombed down together at (omit speeds given family reading) - but that would have been dangerous! We finished the ride day mid-afternoon, giving lots of time to enjoy a beautiful lakeside campsite, and to talk with one of the managers about his wife's story as a nurse - which is very similar to my mom's..Read more

  • Ride Day #3 - Hope to Princeton

    May 11 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The first day of our first full six-day-week of riding. It was a gorgeous day. Our very good friends in Hope sent us on early with lots of love, cheers, and full breakfast bellies. Debbie and Glen, Julie's parents who are supporting the first two-weeks of riding, happened to pull in to our lunch stop at Manning Park Lodge, and lightened our load in more ways than one.Read more

  • Ride Day #2 - Mom and Friends in Hope

    May 10 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Yesterday Judah and I cycled White Rock to Hope - a ride that was meant to be 143km but instead was 153km due to a `dad knows we are going the right way` detour, which Judah took very graciously! But we managed to visit mom and Jen in Chilliwack for lunch, bringing Mother's Day flowers from White Rock that had bin ziptied to the rack. Powered on by the Subway lunch Jen provided, we made it to Hope where we've been staying with dear friends. Tomorrow we have our first very hard riding day, attempting Hope to Princeton!Read more

  • Ride Day #1 Part II - Tsawwassen to White Rock, BC

We only picked up THREE MORE punctures once off the ferry! Nonetheless, we got to ride the lovely gravel path along Mud Bay.

  • Ride Day #1 Part I - Victoria to Swartz Bay ferry

    May 6 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Dad kindly took us on the ferry and drove us to our starting point in Victoria. We - or more accurately, Andy - then took too much time taking pictures at the BC Legislature and we were then pressed to make the 1pm ferry. Judah realized we needed to hustle, and set a strong pace. But, as we neared the ferry, we caught our first puncture and had to work together to get the tube changed out in record time. It felt like we were in a Formula One pit stop crew. Ours were the last wheels that rolled onto the ferry just before 1pm!Read more
