  • Ride Day #42 - Rv. du-Loup to Edmundston

    June 26 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

"Ride auto-paused". That's what comes up on the bike computer when you've started a planned route and it senses you've stopped rolling. It's count of your time in the saddle pauses while you, well, do any manner of things. You could be just taking a break over good food or enjoying conversation with a fellow traveller.

But some things provoke the undesired auto-pause. Some days you get a puncture. Some days you get four in as many hours. Some days your route proves way more demanding and isolated than the initial planning indicated. Some days the water stations you plan to refresh at don't work. Some days it rains for hours and hours. Some days you realise the GPS signal is running with squirrels and you've misread the dot on the map and have to turn back amid a confusing network of trails. And some days all these things and more happen in one day. That was today.

But some days you cross another provincial border! And some you discover the immense kindness of strangers. Some days your motel turns out to have an authentic Indian restaurant and good Canadian beer and are open late. Some days you go from being terribly discouraged to hopeful over an hour. And this all was today too. "Ride resumed".

  • Ride Day #43 - Edm. to Perth-Andover

    June 27 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We needed a bit of a sleep in, repair time in the morning, AND early afternoon to get back on our feet after the challenge of yesterday. The motel owner kindly drove me into town so I could get an axel-cone for Judah's front wheel and restock on tubes. They then requested a picture with us! We then had a nice 100k of riding with few hiccups. That said, Judah's rear rack broke! We managed a fix though!Read more

  • Ride Sunday? We'd never...

    June 28 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We`ve taken Sundays as rest days since beginning our adventure but today we decided to ride in order to keep a planned rest day on Wednesday, for Canada Day in Charlottetown PEI - the seedbed for Canadian confederation.

We then made it about 700m and realised Judah had a done tire. I guess when his rack broke yesterday it compromised his tire. So we took our Sunday rest day after all!

We booked the motel for the night again and Shirley, the motel owner, had her husband Fred drive Judah back to the town we left yesterday to get what we needed. A two hour round trip!

It's a moving thing, seeing God's provision through persistent challenges. You'd rather not have the challenges! But in his wisdom, it's actually precisely through them that you see and learn the most important and beautiful things - not least our need for dependence on him for even the smallest things, but also his beauty woven through fellow humans as you share your need with them.

We had planned to ride our first Sunday today and were literally stopped in our tracks. Reminded, I guess, that it's not been us primarily who have guided and supplied the journey. We make our plans, and it is right that we try to, but he orders our steps. Lord willing, rolling again tomorrow and really looking forward to seeing dad soon. There's huge encouragement and provision in his arrival.

And Judah got back safe and sound from his mini-adventure with a stranger. Maybe Fred and Shirley are angels in disguise 😇🤔

  • Ride Day #45 - Fredericton to Moncton

    June 30 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Another big day! But one greatly helped by a lovely visit 40 km in with Richard and Rhonda, friends of my mom and dad going back to dad's military college days. And then my dad and nephews Landon and Hudson arrived and met us with 30km to go to Moncton. They flew into Halifax yesterday and are seeing us through our final week!Read more

  • Ride Day #46 - Moncton to Charlottetown

    July 1 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Happy Canada Day!!! We crossed the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick into Prince Edward Island, and then enjoyed the anniversary of Canadian confederation in Charlottetown with extended family. They made us a lobster feast!Read more

  • Ride Day #47 - Chartown. to Cape Breton

    July 2 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We legged it 60km first thing from Charlottetown to the ferry on the east side of PEI and caught the ferry to YET ANOTHER PROVINCE: Nova Scotia. Then, upon arrival, we heaved it another 135km to Cape Breton. Having dad and the boys bring drinks with the truck really helped in heavy heat. We saw 38 degrees hang through the hottest part of the afternoon. With the distance, the heat, and the elevations, this day was an achievement in itself!Read more

  • Ride Day #48 - Cape Brt. to North Sydney

    July 3 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We opted for a big day yesterday to position us for a low stress day today, given we had to hit the North Sydney ferry, which runs only three days a week, so we would be able to ride to St. John's Newfoundland tomorrow - our final day! It's an overnight ferry so - all going to plan - we get some sleep so we can finish fresh upon landing tomorrow.Read more

  • Ride Day #49 - Argentia to St. John's

    July 4 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Finished!! We thought all was lost for our plan for our last ride day when the overnight ferry we were taking to Newfoundland had to turn around and head back after 2 hours at sea due to a health concern on board. Arriving 4 hours later than planned was not going to work with a 130K ride. But it turned out the captain put the pedal to the metal through the night and we were only an hour behind. We had a beautiful ride across the eastern end of Newfoundland, our 10th and final province. I'll post more soon.Read more

  • Champions!

    July 7 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Hearty thanks to my dad Grant for coming to support our final week of riding last week, bringing Judah's cousins Landon and Hudson (Carl and Natalia's boys). It was a big load off to be able to not have to bear our bags on our bikes for a huge week of riding and, even more, the company encouraged us. Thanks dad, Hudson and Landon. Champions! Thanks too to Michelle for supporting dad in coming, and to Nat and Lucy for supporting Carl and Hudson and Landon in being with us. Thank you!Read more

  • Flight: Halifax to Vancouver

    July 7 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We had originally planned to get a Monday morning ferry off Newfoundland, so we could have more time driving around Nova Scotia, and see more of Halifax especially, before our Tuesday flight back to Vancouver. But our ferry was cancelled and they initially rescheduled us to sail Wednesday! We ran into some Newfoundlanders who were in a similar predicament, but who really emphasised we had to fight with the ferry company. So fight we did! And six or seven interactions with various levels of leadership, and dad's persistence, magically opened up the Monday evening overnight sailing to us, allowing us to easily catch our Tuesday flight. We were so grateful! But sad to miss time in Halifax.Read more

  • A Final Thank You!

    August 17 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Six weeks ago Judah and I arrived back in Vancouver from Halifax. Three weeks after that I filmed this video of thanks and meant to post it here, but things have been demanding with my mom in hospital.

Before leaving St John's I filmed a video thanking everyone who had played a key role in supporting and hosting us on the trip. But it was 20 minutes long!

So, in addition to those I name in this much shorter video, Judah and I want to thank:

    THOSE WHO HELPED US PREPARE...

Accies - You were among the first to give to our cause, and my ticker didn’t miss a beat on the ride - I think largely down to rowing with you!

Helen - Gotta love a nutritionist who authorises candy on the ride! You helped us be sober minded about the amount of calories we'd need. Thank you!

Alex - Faithful neighbour who knows far more about bikes than we do. Your advice on my gearing came just at the right time.

Alec - Bike fitter extraordinaire. You fit me in on little notice right before we flew!

Dom - Speaking to someone in Oxford who had launched on the same adventure only the summer before was a huge encouragement. Thanks for all the kit you gave Judah to boot!

Chris - Your book Eastward and Far about your own cycle across Canada helped me believe we should go ahead even when I didn’t feel as prepared as I wanted to be.

    THOSE IN THE WEST…

Dave and Alicia, Hope - Having very close friends as our first hosts was perfect. Thanks for hosting us on Mother’s Day weekend, and letting Judah and I sing at the front of your church ;)

Stephan and Colleen, Vernon - You accepted us in soaking wet, and the food and wine and company warmed us.

Dale and Susan, Calgary - You let us stay in your home even when you weren’t there!

Salem, Calgary - Our first Eritrean meal of the trip was a joy! We were very glad Yoni connected us.

Marybeth, Lake Diefenbaker - You came and stayed with us in your cottage on a morning’s notice! We were moved by your family’s story.

Jason and Emily, Caronport - It was good to spend time with old friends in our old hometown - twice!

Laura and Jer, Tisdale - We couldn’t have asked for a better recipe for refreshment on our first full weekend of rest than to spend time with you and your lovely girls in your element.

Roberta and James, Regina - First we weren’t going to be going through Regina, then we stayed with you for three nights! You were so kind. Thanks for the carb powder to boot!

Salem, Regina - Our second experience of Eritrean hospitality on the trip - and just as good as the first! We’re grateful Goytom connected us.

Auntie Joan, Treherne - You are mentioned in the video, but Judah and I can’t thank you enough for taking such an interest in our ride. We loved meeting the people of Treherne United Church as well.

Alter Ego Sports, Winnipeg - When Judah’s bike started asking questions, you answered - twice!

    THOSE IN THE EAST…

Monica and Rob - What a welcome to Ontario! The breakfast, the view, and the company. Bless you!

Nestor Falls United Church - Thanks for leaving a door open when no one is around. You were a refuge as we awaited rescue from our first major mechanical failure.

Kari, Thunder Bay - You welcomed us into Hillsdale Lutheran Church not only on Sunday, but the next morning for your community pancake breakfast too. Your enthusiasm is boundless!

Phil, Dinner Bell Motel, Bonfield - Meeting a fellow man of faith on his own cycling adventure after we had one of our most discouraging days to that point was very heartening.

Ottawa’s Drivers - Thanks to all those who honked, honked, and honked some more when I accidentally led us onto a non-cycling freeway through the city. Thanks especially to the woman who managed to finger us out her window for over a kilometer!

Chris and Claire, Ottawa - Breakfast and conversation with you after our traumatic freeway experience was just what was needed. We couldn’t have been more inspired by your work for the Canadian Nurses Foundation. You’re the real deal!

Doug and Laurelle, Ottawa - We loved our night at yours. The food! The conversation! The stories about my dad in military college! We wished we could stay longer.

La Roma Motel Management, Edmundston - You were there at the end of our most difficult day. Your Indian restaurant was a godsend. And the next day you drove us to the bikeshop and let us have the room late so we could finish repairs.

Shirley and Fred, Perth-Andover - When Judah’s bike tire blew, you drove him back to Edmundston, an hour each way, so he could get the parts. We still can’t believe it!

Dick and Rhonda - More stories about my dad in military college, and touching to see your heart for my mom too, Rhonda. Bless you!

Allison and Greg, Charlottetown - We couldn’t have had a more memorable Canada Day than the incredible lobster feast with your family. We loved it!

    AND FINALLY…

In addition to those mentioned above and in the video, I want to thank you Judah. The adventure was packed with memories - not least with all those I’ve mentioned. But the best part of the ride for me was the unplanned conversations and simple meals enjoyed with you. I know you would have been motivated to do the ride on your own, or with a friend. But I wouldn’t have been motivated to do it were it not mainly about time with you. Thanks for all your patience with the old man, and for your strength. The way you rode with such skill in the final few days as your chainrings were worn and prone to skipping was especially impressive! Well done son.

    PS:

    Some asked for final opportunity to give to our Canadian Nurses Foundation campaign. So I have reopened it here: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/ride-for-r…;

And, as I mention in the video, we’re grateful for those who asked after our personal expenses for the ride, given we wanted to forefront the charitable cause and so haven’t forefronted personal expense. Any interested in helping in this way are welcome to be in touch.
