    June 7, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Next we visited Laurie's nephew, Garrett, at his new workplace. He works for Mission Outdoors and the company recently moved into a MUCH larger space so we received the grand tour! We stayed with Garrett Wednesday night and his girlfriend, Cate, gave us a ride to the airport.Read more

  • On our way

    June 8, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

We started our trip on Wednesday by driving down to the Twin Cities. Our first stop was in Pine City to visit Dave's niece, Beth, and all her boys. Kyle cooked hamburgers on the grill for a wonderful lunch. Living on the lake we were treated to a boat ride where the boys showed their new skills on their Zup Board.Read more

  • Thursday

    June 8, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

I am just getting used to this app and the order of my posts is a little mixed up. We arrived in Anchorage today but I didn't take any photos. It is cloudy and cool here and they have had a very cool start to summer. We had plans to ride bikes on the Tony Knowles coastal trail, but the weather was a bit cool with scattered sprinkles. I guess we are going to have to toughen up because it's not going to be 80s and sunshine. We did go for a walk in Kincaid Park and Earthquake Park but we're unable to find any moose or other wildlife. Enjoyed pizza at Moose's Tooth and we bought our groceries. Tomorrow we head to Alaska Rivers Company to see Kevin.Read more

  • Anchorage to Cooper Landing

    June 9, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

We are traveling with Terri and Bill, from Chicago. Laurie and Terri were friends in college. We stopped for a number of sights on our drive from Anchorage to Cooper Landing. At the Potter's Marsh boardwalk we had hoped to find a moose or two but found only people. Enjoyed a picnic lunch at Alyeska Resort, the only ski resort in Alaska. Very cool and wet and it's still snowing in the mountain peaks as seen in the mountains photo. Had a nice hike to Byron Glacier near Portage. We were happily greeted by Kevin and Jess upon arriving at Alaska Rivers Company.Read more

  • Homer

    June 10, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

On a day trip to Homer, we found a water taxi to take us across the bay to Kachemak Bay State Park, which is only accessible by water. We teamed up with two local guys who helped us find our way to the tram which crossed a river. The hike continued to Grewingk Glacier Lake and Halibut Cove where we were picked up by the water taxi. It was a great hike.Read more

  • Hope Needs More Hope

    June 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Today we went to Hope, Alaska with the goal of a short hike to Palmer Lakes followed by a reuben sandwich from a restaurant recommended by Kevin. We hiked almost 4 miles but never got to the trailhead and the Sea View Cafe was closed and had a for sale out front. It was still a great hike and we went back to the cabin for a pork chop dinner with Kevin and Jess.Read more

  • Seward, Alaska

    June 12, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 39 °F

Seward is a great place to find glaciers and ocean wildlife. On land we made a quick stop at Exit Glacier which seems to get smaller and further away each time we visit. To visit Kenai Fjords National Park we took a 6 hour boat ride.and saw Aialik glacier which is a tidal glacier, meaning it falls into the ocean. To get a size relationship, look for another tour boat on the far right side of the glacier photo. We were able to see lots of orca whales, a humpback whale, otters, sea lions, seals and cute little puffins. The clouds were hanging low and the seas were rough in spots, but we had an enjoyable trip.Read more

  • Evening Fishing

    June 12, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

After we returned from our day trip to Seward, Kevin, Jess and Hambone returned with 4 bags of freshly caught red salmon. They did the finishing touches on cleaning the fish in the river and Jess showed everyone how easy it is to catch rainbow trout by hooking into one on her second cast. It took Dave a few more than two casts but he hauled in a big one too. It was great fun on the river. The photo of the rafts was taken at 11:40pm. The amount of daylight around here is amazing!Read more

  • Denali - Day 1

    June 14, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Today we rode the bus into Denali National Park. We saw moose, caribou, dahl sheep and a brief siting of a brown bear. Most of the animals were too far away to get a photo and there seemed to be less wildlife. We could only drive half the road due to the Polychrome landslide which is causing major road repairs. We also hiked around Horseshoe Lake which had lots of beaver sign... 9 dams and lots of spruce trees chewed down by beavers. Beautiful hike.Read more

  • Denali NP - Day 2

    June 15, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

With a sunny start to our day, we decided to check out the views of Mt Denali first . The clouds were just starting to cover the mountain so we at least saw part of it.
We pushed ourselves to hike a tougher trail...The Savage River Alpine Trail in Denali NP. It was a long hike up but the view was so worth it!
We also visited The Sled Dog Demo which is in the park. Dogs were very hungry as we arrived and they were fed small pellet food which required them to roll the dispenser to find their food. Very well cared for dogs!

  • Flowers

    June 15, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

I entertained myself by finding flowers on the hike up the steep side of the Savage Creek Alpine Trail. I don't know their names but they make a beautiful bouquet.

  • More Alaska Photos

    June 16, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

We had one night at a cabin in Palmer and checked out the Susitna River on our way to Independence Mine State Park which unfortunately was not open for the season. We had plans to kayak at Eklutna Lake but we arrived early at the rental place and they weren't open yet. Just as well as it was cool and I didn't feel like getting wet. Instead we enjoyed a hike to Thunderbird Falls. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center had a very nice bear display and the brown bears were particularly active. We enjoyed staying in the Old Cabin where Kevin works and it was easy for Kevin and Jess to stop in for dinner.Read more

  • Fish Have Arrived

    June 19, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

There was a definite uptick in activity in Cooper Landing once fishing season opened. Fishermen lined the river's edge for miles trying to catch the sockeye salmon which run up the Russian River. Our expert guide led us to great success on Father's Day evening. Dave was the big winner with six fish, a total of 14 for the four of us.Read more
