    Getting everything ready.

    21 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I'll be putting in the water around 5 pm and plan on making a few miles downstream before making camp for the night. FYI, this will be my primary means of uploading pics and messages. If you want to follow my journey then feel free to follow this page or just check back for updates frequently. I think this will be easier than making multiple posts to different pages and family members.Leia mais

  • Day1

    21 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

This is so beautiful. The fog on the water makes it look right out of a fairy tale. I did catch a glimpse of bigfoot through the fog... I've got about another mile to go before I make camp for the night. I'm going to have to slow down though. And I guess it's convenient to take a bath after getting out of the river lolLeia mais

  • Night 1

    21 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

So I found a nice place to land around 1945. Got camp made just before dark, I was kinda pushing it though. Made 7.2 miles in just under 1.5 hours. The river pushed me about 2 miles an hour without any paddling, my top speed was 7.6 mph. I'll put up some pics of my camp tomorrow.

I saw several deer right beside the water and they just watched me paddle by. Also an otter swam along beside for several minutes. He kept popping up to get a better look at me. I couldn't get a good pic of him though

  • Sleepless

    22 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

So I woke up around midnight. I feel rested but am filled with thoughts about the remainder of the trip. While I would have liked to have company, there is something to be said for spending the night alone in nature. Listening to the crickets and frogs, lull one into a sense of peacefulness that cannot be explained. While I know that there are people around, it feels totally secluded and that contributes to the blissful harmony of nature. Dealing with the remains of tropical storm Cindy is going to be challenging over the next couple off days, but I feel like it will be doable. Hopefully when I get to Celina there will be enough cell service to upload.Leia mais

  • First full day

    22 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

So I woke up this morning around 8. Had just gotten my tarp down and it started to rain. Ate my ham and cheese omelet, which for future reference, I need to grind the dried eggs up finer. It was delicious but a little chunky. Here are the promised pics of my campsite. Last night's sunset was gorgeous.Leia mais

  • Lunch

    22 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

It has started to rain pretty hard. I think Cindy is about here. Lunch is dried fruit. Very yummy. I think more of these trips are in my future. Lots of wildlife out today.

  • Night 2

    22 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

I set up camp tonight much earlier than I originally intended. I paddled much slower today to try to stretch it out. I'm not used to paddling this little. I don't even feel like I've had a workout. It poured rain much of the time I was on the water but my spray skirt and rain jacket kept me dry. The views on this river are indescribable. There are cliffs soaring high over the water and more wildlife than you can shake a stick at. I've pulled my kayak high above the water in case the river does rise tonight and camp is a good 7-8' above the water line. The river is forecast to rise 3' Friday night so I'm pretty sure I'm ok tonight. Tomorrow I'll be very particular about my campsite.Leia mais

  • Dinner tonight

    22 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

I forgot to mention, I was gonna camp on the island, but when I got there, all I could see was hog sign. Entire areas were rooted up. I know that there will be hogs where I'm camped also, but at least we won't be cooped up on an island together. Gonna try to get an early start in the morning because of the severe weather headed in. Tomorrow will also be a short day, but I'm gonna try to make my campsite before it gets too bad. Then maybe I can get a shower in the rain.... I reak pretty bad. Btw I forgot to mention, the river is frigid.......Leia mais

  • Chillaxing in the hammock

    22 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

That's my oldest son's favourite term for relaxing. The weather has calmed down and I'm inside my bug net because the mosquitos are swarming. Reminds me of summers in Manitoba. There is a nice cool breeze blowing and it's gently rocking my hammock to and fro. I really had a hard time picking a place to camp. Not because I couldn't find one, rather there's a plethora of beautiful camp sites along the river. I wish everyone could experience the tranquility here. Tomorrow is going to be rough but I'm looking forward to the day's paddle. I'm getting further from cell service so I don't know if there will be any updates tomorrow. As I said earlier, I plan on getting an early start, so everything but my hammock and tarp is already packed up and ready to hit the water.Leia mais

  • Paddling on

    23 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

I've made it about halfway for the day. Been paddling hard. Checked the radar and it looks like I'll make it with some time to spare. If I have some extra time, I'll set up camp then paddle back to gainesboro for some grub. Unfortunately, now that I'm on the lake, there's no flow to speak of. All the mileage today is pure arm power.Leia mais

  • Giovanni's pizza

    23 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Walked about a mile then a kind motorist stopped and gave me a ride the rest of the way. This really hits the spot. Now I'm hoping I can finish it and get back to camp before the bad stuff hits. We're under a tornado watch until 8 tonight. I should stay dry as long as my tarp doesn't blow away. I mentioned earlier about the headwind I was fighting. Well I videoed part of it and took a screenshot to upload. You can just make out the nose of my kayak under the wave. There were multiple waves that crashed over my kayak. The entire kayak was underwater at several points, some of the waves came up to my chest. That gives you an idea of the wind I was fighting.Leia mais

  • Storms have arrived

    23 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Well, the storms have arrived. I took a shower via a hard downburst of rain. Feel much better now. Just relaxing and reading a good book while listening to the rain on the tarp. And yes, that is leftover pizza you see on the kayak. Can you say yummy breakfast.... I have the kayak tied off to two trees in case the water rises further than expected. It has room to float up several feet by which time it will push up into my butt and let me know the water is rising. I hope that's not the case though. It depends on how much rain they get upstream. They have reduced the forecasted amounts by 2 inches so I should be ok. Earlier I saw a flat bill pink bird that looks like a Roseate spoonbill, but they are not supposed to be this far north. Maybe someone can identify it.Leia mais

  • Sunset on Cordell Hull lake

    23 de junho de 2017, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

Today has been really good. Had some excitement with the big waves. I can't wait until I have good enough service to upload the video. I enjoyed my pizza immensely. Of course that might have been because I just finished paddling really hard for 4 and a half hours. Man my arms were burning after that. But I had a very relaxing afternoon in camp. I enjoy the solitude, but it's really difficult to describe the beauty and peacefulness here. I would love to share it with others. I pitched my camp with a good view of the western sky hoping for a spectacular sunset after the storms came through. It's not as red as I had hoped, but beautiful nonetheless. I hope everyone else enjoys spending the night closed in by four walls ....Leia mais
