    First day in India

    2023年2月20日, インド ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

First day in India! Arrived at Delhi airport, got a local SIM card, took the metro to the main train station and walked to my hostel. After settling in in my 8 bed dorm room wandered the streets for a couple of hours, bought some flip flops (for the dirty bathrooms) and got some food!
Really great impressions so far. Everything is so chaotic yet organised at the same time. It feels like a huge organism.

    Exploring old Delhi

    2023年2月21日, インド ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Started the day showering out of a bucket, eating 3 bananas and trying to activate my SIM card. Now to the first day of properly exploring Delhi.

Started by going to the Red fort (is a historic fort in Old Delhi that served as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors - Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned construction of the Red Fort in 1638 when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi)
WAs walking around the inside of the fort for a long time, afterwards there was a little theme park outside where I made some friends and we rode the ferries wheel together.

After this fun time I walked to Jama Masijd (one of the largest mosques in India, also built by emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 - 1656)

After a 100 selfies with mostly Indian teenagers at this mosque I walked all around the busy streets and markets of Old Delhi.

Walking in Delhi makes you tired because of the heat and constantly having to dodge Tuk Tuk’s, people, dogs, cows and anything else coming your way. Now i rest. and have more food of course.

    Exploring Southern Delhi

    2023年2月22日, インド ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Started the day with some reading and stretching on the Hostel Terrace.

After that went for breakfast in Delhis biggest community kitchen. Free food is served for anyone who asks 24/7 inside of the Gurudwara Shri Bangla Sahib (one of the most prominent Sikh temples in Delhi). The food being served was Dahl (lentil soup), Rajma (kidney bean curry) & Rotis (flatbread). Around 500 people were eating at the same time. When everyone was done the place was mopped and the next 500 people came in.

Second stop of the day was the Akshardham (massive Hindu Temple). Got totally lost on the way there and had to take 1 metro and 2 Tuk Tuk’s to reach it in the end. Sadly no photos were allowed inside.

Finishing off the day 8 veggie momos (Nepalese dumplings), 1 lime juice & 1 Aloo Gobi Curry (Potaot - Cauliflower Curry)

    First Days in Rishikesh

    2023年2月23日, インド

On the Road to Rishikesh, I was dreaming more or less…

After a very exhausting, sleep deprived and confusing yet beautiful train ride I arrived in a little lazy town called Rishikesh. Such a blessing to get here and hang out by the river under the mountain ranges after crazy and chaotic Delhi.

There is even little sand beaches here by the Ganges River. Perfect for swimming, relaxing and getting loads of reading done. Will start my Pranayama Teacher Training Course here on the first of March. So this will be my home for the next 3 weeks or so. Feels like a good place to really arrive in India and learn to go with the flow of everything here. Looking forward to going on some hikes, joining some yoga classes and visiting the famous Beatles Ashram.

    Monkeys, Cows & Gymnastics

    2023年2月25日, インド ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Easy days in Rishikesh. Already have somewhat of a morning routine here. Going to a little river spot with 4 bananas for some swimming, a little Workout, meditations, reading and breakfast.

Afterwards I was simply wandering around this little town. Met the local animal residents and explored the Parmarth Niketan Ashram. At 5 o’clock every day its time for the Ganga Aarti (Blessing of the Holy Ganga River). It’s 1 1/2 hours of singing, playing traditional Indian music, praying and lighting fires. Really beautiful ceremony. This evening it was extra special because there was a team of gymnasts preforming afterwards.

Walking back very slowly to my hostel, grabbing some street food on the way and now reading in bed. Already getting tired. Excited to sleep :)

    Beatles Ashram

    2023年2月27日, インド

It’s been some good and relaxed days her ein Rishikesh. Really starting to settle in in India, learning to accept the chaos and just move with it.

After a morning Yoga class I went past my favourite swimming spot for a quick dip and continued, much more refreshed, to the famous Beatles Ashram. The now abandoned ashram where the Beatles, Donovan, Mike Love and the Farrow sisters stayed for 3 months in the late 60’s. Really cool place to visit! Spent most of the day there just walking around and exploring the ruins. The house where the Beatles stayed is also clearly marked and I met some other lovely people around there who had a guitar, so we played and sang some songs obviously! Really nice to be in the same place where they wrote so many of the White Album songs.

For sunset I sat by the Ganga and enjoyed some street food. Now eating some bananas with peanut butter for desert. Time to sleep soon.

    Caves as Scooters

    2023年2月28日, インド ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

First little scooter tour of the trip! Rented a little scooter and drove to some near by caves. A lot of the caves in India are considered as holy and very spiritual because a lot of famous yogis used to live in them in the past to seek enlightenment. Therefore a lot of pilgrims pass by them.

I also visited the “Jesus Cave”, a cave where allegedly Jesus lived and meditated in during his “lost years”. There are a lot of theories about Jesus coming to the north of India between the age of 12 and 29, none of them however really confirmed.

    2 Weeks Pranayama Teacher Trainining

    2023年3月14日, インド

The last 2 weeks I attended a Pranayama Teacher Training in Rishikesh. Really great experience with a lot of insights, great teacher and really great people.
Pranayama is one of the eight limbs of Yoga and is crucial for a complete practice. It is an ancient breathwork technique which has been practiced is the Himalayas fir thousand of years. It involves controlling your breath in different ways and overall is used for relaxed the body and repairing the internal organs.

Alarm clock went off every day at 5:45 and the first lesson started at 6:30. We were advised to not have many external influences so most of the the bdays we were just practicing, eating, a bit of swimming and sleeping. At the end of the two weeks it was our task to teach a class ourselves which I enjoyed a lot! Now looking into starting a Yoga Teacher Training as well.

We had one day off during the course because of Holi festival. Holi festival is a massive festival all across India and Nepal, famous for throwing colours :) It was super crazy during the day, a lot of music, dancing, food and especially colours everywhere!

Also I started some bansuri (Indian flute) lessons and bought a little guitar (couldn’t resist).

    Scooter Trip to the mountains

    2023年3月19日, インド ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Drove up to Chopta with two friends after the Pranayama course. Around a 6 hour ride on the scooter with many stops because of all the amazing sights and towns we passed on the way.

It was super cold up here in the mountains but we managed to stay relatively warm by hiking a lot and spending most of the days by the fire or under a blanket.

This morning we went up to the ancient Tungnath temple. Alarms rang at 5:15 and we started walking around 6. Amazing Himalayan views on the way up. We reached the peak of the mountain (3,700 meters) around 10 o’clock. Enjoyed the views and some bananas and peanut butter up there.

    Back to rishikesh

    2023年3月28日, インド ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Traveling back to Rishikesh with Seb. Had to buy a raincoat halfway through the 7 hour scooter ride back because it started pouring down. Turned out to be a good ride in the end and felt really great to come back to warm & sunny place after the cold mountains.

Spent a couple of lazy days in Rishikesh sitting and bathin in the river Ganga, eating good food, exploring the old part of Rishikesh, going to the Beatles Ashram again enjoying the last days of having Seb in India before he’S heading back to Amsterdam.

Varanasi - The source of India

    2023年4月6日, インド ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Spent the last 8 days in Varanasi. It took about 24 hours in train to get here but I had a little bed I could sleep on, a lot of snacks, books, downloaded some movies and the view was also very entertaining.

Arrived here late at night and had to get some proper sleep first of all! When I woke up exploring this crazy city could finally begin. Varanasi is one of the oldest towns on earth. Meaning that people have been living here, worshipping this town and the river Ganga for centuries, because of Varanasi’s (or Benaras or Kochi’s) prominent role in Hindu mythology.

Varanasi is the city of Shiva, one of the most important Hindu gods. It is believed that if you die and are cremated in Varanasi your soul is freed from the cycle of rebirth and is liberated into Nirvana. Because of this reason a lot of people who are on the verge of dying travel to Varanasi. Those people who have already died will be burned on the burning grounds. Those burning grounds are located in the middle of the city right next to the river and are one of the biggest attraction for anyone visiting this city. And this actual burning of the bodies is not done in hiding! It is done very publicly, openly and yes, very visibly.

Besides these, sometimes very graphic sites, Varanasi has some really beautiful architecture, sunsets, food and people. I spent most of the days just walking around without any real plan and soaking in the energy of the city. The last 5 days I also started taking sitar classes. And now im hooked and need to buy a sitar. But i always knew that was going to happen :)

Heading back to Rishikesh tomorrow, another 24 hour ride, where I will start my Yoga Teacher Training in a couple of days.

200 hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training

    2023年4月30日, インド ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Spent the last 3 weeks doing a 200 hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training course back in Rishikesh. It was truly amazing, but also very intense 3 weeks. We had about 10 hours of classes a day. Learning about Yoga, Meditation, Yogic Philosophy, Ayurveda, Pranayama and Yoga alignment.

A typical day looked like this:
    5:45: Wake up
    5:45 - 7:00: Self study
    7:00 - 8:30: Hatha Yoga
    8:30 - 9:30: Pranayama
    9:30 - 10:00: Breakfast
    10:00 - 11:30: Philosophy
    11:45 - 13:15: Yoga/Pranayama Theory
    13:30 - 16:00: Lunch and break
    16:00 - 17:30: Yoga alignment
    17:45 - 19:15: Meditation
    19:30 - : Dinner and free time
    22:00: Bed time

I really learned a lot, met amazing people and amazing teachers :) But now the real challenges comes of implementing everything that I have learned and trying to create the right practice for myself and figuring out how and what I could teach in the future.

    Dharamshala with Mama

    2023年6月2日, インド ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After our little China trip Mama accompanied me back to India. We spent a nice and very peaceful week in Dharamkot! A little hippie village next to McLeod Ganj, which is where the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community took refuge in 1959.

We spent our days hiking, escaping the mountain rain, eating great Tibetan food and exploring the Tibetan communities and temples around McLeod Ganj. We visited the main temple where the Dalai Lama resides, the Tibetan Museum, which explained and showed the whole history of Tibet. The Norbulingka Institute was also very interesting! It’s an institute which aims to preserves the Tibetan culture. There are many studios where young Tibetans practice woodwork, traditional painting, sewing and tailoring.

After a week well spent Mama left me alone again and Ill spend some more days in this lazy little village :)

Dalai Lama Teaching & Camping at Triund

    2023年6月9日, インド ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

In the past week I went to an early Technik of the Dalai-Lama at this temple. He spoke for about 1 hour on basic Buddhist principles. It was really beautiful joining this teaching and sitting among all the monks. I had a little radio which translated everything he said from Tibetan to English.

Another exciting activity was my hike to the snow line of the Triund trek. Spent one day climbing up to 3300 meters and sleeping up there! I got caught in a big hail storm while going up but luckily i had my guitar and book with me so i just hid out under some trees and waiting for the storm to pass :) On the top I slept in someone’s tea stall. He had a couple of yoga mats spread out where I could spend the night after he prepared me some dal, rice and Chapati! Slept at 9 o’clock, went down the next day at 7 and since then I’ve just been enjoying this little hilly place by laying in the sun, taking more sitar lessons and enjoying all the little cafes around here :)

    4 days in Srinagar, Kashmir

    2023年6月14日, インド ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Spent the last 4 days in Srinagar, Kashmir! What a beautiful place with amazing people, but i really had to earn getting here. It took about 36 hours in total to get here from my last stop. After lot of bus rides, eating at road-side restaurants, listening to podcasts and semi sleeping and I arrived here.

But it was totally worth it. This city has such a unique landscape and the people are so welcoming, honest an curious! It feels very different than the rest of India, because it technically is. Kashmir has been in the middle of an international conflict between Pakistan and India for years now! With both countries owning parts of the region. It is still to this day a highly militarised zone. But local life is very peaceful here and all the local long for is just to live in peace.

I rented a scooter and explored the whole city and its surroundings. I visited several Mosques, Forts, Gardens and enjoyed the vibrant street life. My favourite part was the floating village, which is a settlement built on the lake itself. There are a lot of floating gardens and people paddling around on boats. Just a very peaceful and beautiful little spot that i visited every day while I was here.

    Leh: Monastaries, Lakes & Mountains

    2023年6月22日, インド ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

It’s been a week in Leh, Ladakh! After a a 20 hour bus ride finally arrived at this super remote but beautiful place on 3700 meter altitude. Took the first days do explore the city itself and get used to the high altitude.

Rented a scooter for 10 days and started to explore the whole area of Ladakh. There are so many ancient Buddhist monasteries around that i took 2 days to visit all of them and take in the old structures, amazing art anf statues.

Also drove to one of the highest salt water lakes in the world called Pangong lake. Took about 7 hours to reach there by scooter, going over a 5400 meter pass and a lot of drift road. It was not an easy journey but once you get to the lake its all worth it. An incredibly blue lake surrounded by snowy mountains and incredible stars at night. And yes, its very cold to swim in it but it sure wakes you up after 7 hours on a scooter.

Now back Leh for a day or two to rest and to prepare for the next 3 day scooter journey to Nubia valley.

旅行者

3 day road trip on scooter! Exploring the whole area of Ladakh, also know as „Little Tibet“.

Ended up in Turtuk, the furthest north and foreigner can go in India. It’s a cute little village with lush green buckwheat fields, glacier streams to bath in and amazing sunsets and night skies.

Spent most of my time swimming and exploring the local life of this village.

The way back to Leh was really harsh! Massive puddles to drive through, sandstorms, hail, rain and having to cross a pass of 5400 meters. Got back to Leh very cold and had a lukewarm shower and a nice soup :)

Surfing and relaxing in Arugam Bay

    2023年7月13日, スリランカ ⋅ 🌩️ 32 °C

Left India and spent the last 2 week in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka. It felt like a little vacation coming from the north of India. Everything is a little bit easier, cleaner, more tropical and overall more relaxed.

I spent 2 weeks surfing everyday and made some good progress. Sadly i got a bit injured on my ribs on the last days so i had stop early. Besides surfing I simply enjoyed amazing local food, played a lot of guitar on the beach, explored the whole area by scooter and visited Buddhist monasteries, empty beaches and even spotted some wild elephants.

Overall very good times over there. It is quite touristy however., so it felt good to leave this place and sit on a local bus and experience real Sri Lanka again. I did have some very relaxed days in my little beach hut however and had some time to process my time in India.

Sadly i didn’t take to many photos over here. Sorry! :)

Hiking and scootering around Ella! Chasing waterfalls, tea plantations and local villages.

Had a nice week exploring the hilly tea country in Sri Lanka! I visited a tea factory, took part in a cooking class and enjoyed my homestay with a lovely host family!

Left Ella on a beautiful 10 hour train ride through this beautiful country!
