  • Boyd Lake SP - Loveland, CO

    19 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Down from 10,000' to 5,000' and the climate change is dramatic it's in the 90's F today at Boyd Lake State Park. Good campground by a lake with sandy beaches and views of the mountains. All sorts of RVs here Friday from coaches, like ours, to fifth wheels, trailers and tents. Cycle round the lake was amazing. Americans know how to do beach, gazebos, barbecues, ball games, inflatables, power boats and jet skis. Lots of geese, gulls, egrets , herons and even saw a white pelican.Meer informatie

  • Old Western Bar - Glendo, WY

    20 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Left Boyd Lake State Park at Loveland in the Jeep Sunday 7pm and headed north on I25 to Glendo, WY, a journey of 164 miles to see the 'Total Eclipse'. Glendo, a very small town with population of 203 in the 2016 census is going to be mobbed as it is one of the best places to see Totality. Traffic was not as bad as predicted, so we had a good journey. We pulled into town and the place was buzzing, so we parked, stuck a pin on their world map in the east coast of Scotland, only representatives so far, although there are a few English pins on it. We had a walk down Main Street, didn't take long then headed for the Old Western Bar for a drink. Back to the car and tried to sleep in a side Street, but there was constant noise from people walking around and traffic streaming off I25, so around 03:30 we drove out to the joined the queue to get in to the airport, which is hosting a free eclipse event.Meer informatie

  • 2017 Eclipse - Glendo, WY

    21 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Parked on the grass 2nd row in around 05:00, first things first, a nice hot cuppa from the flask !!
Beautiful sunrise around 06:30 heralded a great day for the main event.
Our neighbours on one side are Woody & Zizzy from Strawberry, AZ and on the other Charles and his 10 year old son Logan from Fort Collins, CO. Woody is an amateur astronomer and soon set up his telescope with a solar filter. Through it we see the cool sunspots on the sun's surface. The airfield fills up from both ends, cars and people are setting up camp everywhere.
10:24 the moon starts creeping over the sun so everyone dons their eclipse glasses, excitement is mounting. A couple of hot air balloons fly overhead. The light is dimming then at 11:46 we see the 'Diamond Ring' (the last glint of the sun) and it's nearly dark, people are cheering as we have totality and can take our glasses off to look up at the 'Corona' shining from behind the moon. 2m 27s later we don our glasses as the second 'Diamond Ring' appears as the moon is continuing it's track across the sun. Absolutely breathtaking, stunning, amazing, spectacular and even 'fan dabi dozi' !!!
So worth the 164mile drive to the centre line to see totality, even the 7 hours crawling back down I25 to arrive back to the coach at midnight.
No great pictures from the phone as we took advice to watch and take it all in rather than take photos.
Last words belong to Woody, all he could say afterwards was WOW...... WOW and more WOWs.

  • Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

    24 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

First sojourn into RMNP, first stop Visitor Centre to get maps and trail info then we drove round a loop back into Estes Park, stopping to take in the marvellous views. Longs Peak is the impressive highest peak in RMNP. Met Rob & Kathleen and their 'Piggyback' camper. They have a ranch on the US86 in Kiowa, which coincidentally is the road we drove to Denver !! Enjoyed the bluebirds and magpies.Meer informatie

  • Estes Park, CO

    26 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Wandered round the pretty town of Estes Park. There was a ' Made in Colorado' market in the square, resisted the temptation to buy anything, would have to find somewhere to put it in the coach. On way back to the RV Park we spotted a couple of elk by the river on the edge of town.Meer informatie

  • RMNP - Old Falls River Road

    27 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Great drive up the old road to the Alpine Visitor Centre at the top. It's dirt and dusty all the way, first through forests, switchbacking up alongside the Fall River, then out into the high meadows at the top around every corner is another amazing view of the Rocky Mountains. Wildlife sightings - couple of big horn sheep, a herd of elk, chipmunks, ground squirrels, 5 Colorado red tailed hawks, brilliant blue stellar jay, ravens harassing pikas and other smaller birds.Meer informatie

  • RMNP - Lily Lake

    28 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Before we set out this morning Stew rescued a stunned house finch, that flew into our window from a magpie looking for a quick snack. Heading for Wild Basin area of RMNP, first stop Lily Lake, very scenic nestled in the mountains, on our hike round it we saw our first muskrat swimming to his hole with weed in its mouth. Just down the road was this newly built picturesque church. We drove into the Longs Peak trailhead but we're too late in the day, both in time and age to make the climb to the top !!!!Meer informatie

  • RMNP - Emerald Lake

    29 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Emerald Lake is number 3 and our picnic spot for today. Great views of the mountains around the lake and we spotted 3 climbers on the middle of the sheer rock face, rather then than us !!! Dead trees are amazing, the air up here at around 10,000' is so dry they don't rot and are twisted and gnarly. Great wildlife sightings - chipmunks and ground squirrels galore, stellar jays, Clark's nutcrackers and many more birds, Stew's in his element.Meer informatie

  • RMNP - Dream Lake

    30 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Fantastic scenic trail, Dream Lake is number 2, onwards and upwards along the river. A family of marmots were running round the rocks and sunning themselves. Met two sisters, Jane & Ann from Tucson, Arizona, originally from Welwyn Garden City. Must have been at least late 70s, a couple of real characters !!Meer informatie

  • RMNP - Cub Lake Trail

    30 augustus 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Late start today as we moved sites to stay here over the Labor Day Weekend and beyond. Funny how things work out, we are walking a low level trail part way to Cub Lake in Moraine Park. Talk about feeling at home the trees remind us of Scots pines. We cross a river and see trout in the water, there are a few folk fly fishing. We walk up through a beautiful meadow and sitting in the grass by a river is the biggest bull moose we've seen, counted 12 points on his antlers. Right place, right time !!! As we walk back he bellows, stands up and starts marking his territory. Lots birds - hawks, woodpeckers, red naped sapsuckers, magpies, swallows to name but a few.Meer informatie

  • RMNP - Cub Lake

    4 september 2017, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Boy are we glad we came to Cub Lake, it's real pretty as we come over the mountain. We're renaming it Majestic Moose Lake because as were about to head off after a snack I look up to the end of the lake and see a female moose crossing the grass. She makes her way to the lake and climbs in to eat the lilies. She then heads straight across and starts swimming to where we'd been sitting and climbs out to eat some willow. She is a really impressive animal and is not fazed by us and another couple walking the trail above her. Brilliant, so lucky to have such a wonderful close encounter. We on such a high that we skip back down the mountain.Meer informatie
