We are off to rainy Spain

    April 13, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We had a long, long day travelling with a delay in a hot, sweaty, and extremely full Frankfurt airport. Late in bed in the Gran Hotel de Ferro, after something to eat at a local restaurant. We woke this morning to a damp and grey morning sky...good job skin is waterproof!Read more

  • Café con Leche

    April 14, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We had a great little breakfast and then headed off on our Camino. An interesting walk out of the city along the coastline. As Inga didn't have time this morning, we stopped off for a bit of Yoga next to the river, much to the amusement of the local fisherman who paused their digging for worms to watch the spectacular show.Read more

  • Day 1 Ferrol to Narón

    April 14, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

The weather cleared up this afternoon, and after stopping for refreshments, we carried on towards the overnight stop. We booked into a small but lovely room with a beautiful view out over the bay. We got in just before the weather turned...raining cat's and dogs now...hoping for better weather tomorrow.Read more

  • Donnerwetter und dann Tapas

    April 14, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

It was proper **ssing down, so we went just across the road to the local bar. The owner was super Gastfreundlich and supplied us with ample food to accompany our drinks and even a small bowl of the local delicacy....pig trotter soup...delicious!Read more

  • Day 2 Narón to Puertoduema

    April 15, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

We had a lovely breakfast looking out over dark rain clouds...four Americano's later and following a hail storm, we ventured out. Pilar was equipped for torrential rain in her dinosaur outfit, which after about 5 minutes didn't seem so silly, and I followed her fashion style. Eventually, the sun came out, and we enjoyed a beautiful walk along the river and over the first hill to a Café which was conveniently situated to shelter us from the next hail storm. Micha devoured a bacon sandwich, and, following some light amber refreshments, we headed off again. The trail led us through some sweet smelling eucalyptus forests which inspired Inga to conduct our daily Yoga class, much to the amusement of passers-by. We finished a good day's walking in the quaint harbour town of Puertodeuma for the night.Read more

  • Day 3 Ponteduema to Minô

    April 16, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We had a walk around the town after breakfast and then headed off around midday. It was a bit of a shock to the system with a steep climb out of the town, but it led us on a beautiful walk through more forests with amazing views. Although only 11 km today, it was the most demanding yet. Our destination was the seaside town of Minó and our hotel was situated a stones throw from the beach. We watched the sunset over the bay and then Inga went to take a Yoga class with her daughter and we went for food in the hotel restaurant eith Micha. Another entertaining evening :-)Read more

  • Day 4 Minô to Betanzos

    April 17, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Had a lovely walk through some beautiful countryside again today. It was fairly hilly and the weather was changeable, but we arrived in good time. Betanzos is an old city and worth visiting again. We enjoyed some fish for supper that melted in your mouth and then walked through the old town. Despite the rain we caught some of the prossesion before it was cancelled due to weather.Read more

  • Day 5 Betanzos to Beche Camp

    April 18, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We woke up to a rainy Spain, and apart from the occasional brief glimpses of sunshine, it remained so all day. The hotel was okay, but we both had a terrible night sleep. After a not so great breakfast, we headed off. This time, Pilar and the others opted for a baggage transfer, which came as a blessing for Michas feet. The route today was longer, circa. 16 km, but time seemed to pass fairly quickly. We were at our scheduled stop by early afternoon, and the 3 amigos (without rucksacks) jumped in a taxi whilst I ventured back out into the rain. I carried on for an uphill trek through the woods to our final destination of Beche Ecocamp that appeared through the misty rain and offered beautiful accommodation looking out over a lake. Inga and Micha chose to eat early in the resort restaurant and stayed in the cabin for the evening. Pilar and I, following a welcome Siesta headed by taxi back to the last stop for food. It was a very wet but wonderful day.Read more

  • Day 6 Beche Ecocamp to Fogar do Vento

    April 19, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

Wet and windy day. The route was the usual up and down through forests, which provided shelter from the horizontal rain. The highlight of the trail was upon entering the only Café, come bar, shop...basically everything rolled into one. The owner was a lovely entertaining Spanish lady who could not do enough for us. The tomato, serrano, and cheese bap was almost as big as the hills we have climbed on this Camino. We arrived at our warm, dry, and welcoming apartment and enjoyed an afternoon Siesta before heading across the road to the local bar for a bite to eat.Read more

  • Day 7 Fogar do Vento to Ordes

    April 20, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

We woke up to rain. It seems to be the theme for the Camino this year, the rain in Spain. Fully poncho'd up we set off yet again into the eye of the storm. The first Café to appear through the mist provided us with a bit of respite with some coffee and toastada con queso. We tried to put off the inevitable by having another coffee, but we eventually had to face the weather again. After a short time and with the rain unabating, we used the excuse of Pilar needing the bathroom to stop again. The Café seemed to be situated in the living room of an old lady's house. She was very welcoming and provided a tapa of homemade chorizo to accompany our refreshments. Looking outside, we noted that the wind had dropped and the rain ceased, allowing us a dry walk into Ordes. The town seems deserted, but that is probably due to Easter, but we checked into a reasonably priced hotel with a spectacular view over the town. After a welcome Siesta, we headed out into the town to sample some local cuisine... the delicacy here being octopus 🐙Read more

  • Day 8 Ordes to Sigüeiro

    April 21, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We went for a meal in a typical Spanish restaurant last night. At first, I thought we may have made a bad choice as they served up a Tapa of crisps that were a bit soggy... but when the food came, everything was forgotten. Gambas in olive oil, calamari, green paprika in olive oil and salt followed by steak...amazing! The weather took a turn for the better, and we actually saw the sun today. It was the longest stage yet, with circa. 22 kms. There was almost a refuse to soldier, and the route was definitely testing the humour, but the bar at the end reinvigorated the troops to the finish line. Micha and I had to man-up and carry the rucksacks to the accommodation, but all was forgotten when we checked into a swanky boutique hotel, which is perfect. We are all looking forward to reaching the final objective tomorrow.Read more

  • Day 9 Siguero to Santiago de Compostela

    April 22, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Final day and the weather God's were being kind to us...no rain. We set out after a lovely breakfast and headed off into the woods. It is remarkable that despite being so close to a big city, the path led us for most of the way through farmland and forests. We had a small stop along the way and met up with an English family (kids of about 7 or 8 years old) that we have bumped into a few times in the rain. It was great to see that the kids were still enjoying themselves and were just getting on with it. I also got chatting with two retired ladies from Winchester; they were also on their third Camino. One of them lost her husband following a Camino from Porto and had completed the Francais last year and spread her husband's ashes along the way. I told Pilar, who then promptly started to cry. We arrived in Santiago late afternoon to the sound of bagpipes and spent some time on the square before collecting our Compostela and heading for the hotel. This Camino was very different in many ways, but enjoyable all the same.Read more

  • Best Mejillones ever!

    April 22, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

I did the washing whilst Pilar soaked her weary mussels in the bath. We then went out for an evening stroll through the city and ended up in my favourite bar that serves the best mejillones ever!

  • Pilgrims Mass

    April 23, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We all attended the Pilgrims Mass in the Cathedral as a fitting end to our journey. Pilar took Mass for us all by going to the front and returned in tears. Despite the Service being in Spanish, it was a spiritual and inspiring experience. Even as a not particularly religious person, it was definitely thought provoking.Read more

  • Last night out in Santiago

    April 23, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We met up with our fellow Perigrinos at 7 pm. The Guinness Magnet has not been functioning the entire trip, but fortunately, my Eagle eyes spotted 'ss' on a black background . Micha deployed immediately on a close target recce and came back to report that Guinness had been located. The ladies went to do what they do best, and we headed for some Gailic hospitality. Later, we went for some more mussels, followed by some drinks and at a historic Café. It was a lovely final evening.Read more

  • Farewell Desayuno!

    April 24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We had one last sunny breakfast together on the university platz. Whilst it did not seem so great walking in the rain, the sunshine this morning is glorious but too hot to be walking. Pilar has decided that she would like to head into the mountains next year, so Primativo, here we come!Read more
