  • Doha, Qatar

    25–28 maj 2024, Katar ⋅ 🌙 34 °C

My time in Qatar started with a bang! Or, more aptly, a blow torch! Well, it felt like it anyway; it was a boiling 44 degrees.

Doha is an interesting place. It's had significant change over the last 25 years due to their abundance of natural gas. A bedouin past with a pearl diving economy that has rapidly changed to a city of skyscrapers. According to my guide, the first tower (skyscraper) was built in 1999. There are now 61. By 2028, there will be 70. Most of these buildings are on man made islands. When you look at my photos of the city, consider there was nothing there 25 years ago.

My guide also said they're trying to maintain some of their traditions with their falcon events, some buildings, and having camels in the city. They do a changing of the (police) guards on camels. It was quite a spectacle, but I'm not sure it's traditional. 😆 They also have a number of dhows in the port. These are traditional boats used to find pearls. They're no longer used, but they do make a great photo with the city in the background!

Unfortunately, there are no more pearls to be found, nor sharks, dolphins, or other big fish...

But they do have outdoor air conditioning. 🫢 Thank god I'm not paying the power bill!

The Souq Waqif is worth a visit for shopping, delicious food, and a good atmosphere. I went to a couple of museums - Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) and The National Museum of Qatar. The museum buildings are amazing, particularly MIA. The people were lovely, and I felt safe walking around alone (even at night when I was trying to avoid the boiling sun!)

Doha is definitely worth a few days stopover, just not from May-September due to the heat.

I waited until I arrived in Italy before sharing this post. Smartraveller told me not to review any restaurants, services, or culture while in Qatar. It can be considered a cybercrime. I'm not sure if that's the case, but I didn't want to take the risk!

  • Monaco, Pisa, Cinque Terre

    1 czerwca 2024, Monako ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Monaco...totally overrated. I could have a billion dollars and still wouldn't want to live there. The location and backdrop are gorgeous. But it's super condensed and really isn't that nice. Still, it was interesting to see it, including the Monte Carlo Casino. Car lovers (not me) would love the cars and the formula one track.

The palace is on par with Kryal castle in Ballarat. 🤣

I've also tacked Pisa and Cinque Terre (both Italy) to this post. I enjoyed brief visits to both, having been to both before.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa and other buildings in Pisa's Cathedral Square are nice to visit. I find it amusing watching everyone (mainly women) trying to get the perfect photo. It's serious business!

The tower leans 4 degrees because of an unstable foundation. It was completed 652 years ago, which seems a long time ago but isn’t compared to other buildings.

We also did a quick stop at Cinque Terre. It's such a lovely place but full of tourists. Bloody tourists! 😁 We only went to one town and had a nice lunch looking over the Mediterranean. It's a hard life.

I was disappointed that the Via dell'Amore (Path of Love) was still closed. It was closed last time I visited in 2016 due to a landslide. It's meant to open next month. The Italians don't like to rush. 🤣

I did visit Rome and Florence and had a couple of mishaps. 🙄 As I'm going to both locations again soon, I'll write about these later.

I'm currently on route to Montserrat from Barcelona. I see a few sangrias in my future.

  • Montserrat (Spain)

    3 czerwca 2024, Hiszpania ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Montserrat is a mountain area that has a monastary that houses an ancient wooden statue of the Virgin and Child. It's a gorgeous place an hour from Barcelona. I'm not religious, so it was the spectacular mountain views that took my attention. There are lots of hikes around which you could spend days walking.

If you're in Barcelona, I'd highly recommend a day trip.

  • Andorra (and 100 tractors)

    4 czerwca 2024, Andora ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

My first mini adventure was almost ruined by 100 tractors!

I was on a group tour in beautiful Barcelona. As I've been here before, I decided I'd try to get to neighbouring Andorra instead of going to sites I'd already been. Andorra is a small, landlocked country between Spain and France. From Barcelona, a regular bus takes a minimum of 3 hours to get there. So it's a minimum of 6 hours return. There is no airport and no train station.

For convenience, I'd booked into a  separate day tour. The day before, my day trip was  cancelled as the borders between France, Spain, and Andorra were closed. Blocked by 100 tractors. 🤣 Catalan farmers protesting. Arrrghh, talk about bad timing (for me)! They've never done this before, and they do it on the only day I can go! This is travel! 🤣

I tried to find a solution but went to bed deflated.

The next morning, I woke as a woman unwilling to let 100 tractors derail my plans! I'd been googling for news on the border closure (and translating the information from Spanish). Maybe this protest is only 24 hours and I can take a regular bus? Bugger, the buses are cancelled this morning. But maybe this afternoon? How can I find out?

I'll loiter at the bus station!

Long story short, I loitered and ended up on the 1pm bus to Andorra!

It was an anxious ride. I didn't know if I'd get in or if I'd get stuck. Was the border open? Would it close again? Would I make it back to Barcelona by 7 am the next day when my tour leaves? What new tour friends do I trust to pack and bring my bags? How much does it cost to stay in Andorra if I'm stuck? How would I get to France to meet my tour group if I didn't get back?

This is why I like to travel independently. Most of these things wouldn't have mattered if I was travelling solo - you can just stay where you end up. It's a bit harder when your actions can impact the group.

So, I made it to Andorra. And back. I got to my hotel at 11:45pm. I had over 7 hours to spare!! 🤣

Re Andorra. It's a mountainous country, and the scenery on the bus ride was stunning! It was worth it just for that.

The capital, Andorra la vella (Andorra the town) has only 22,000 residents. It's known for its skiing and winter activities. And, it's shopping! It's tax-free!! You'd think you were in a major city when you see all the shops!

Unfortunately, I couldn't really shop as I don't want to carry things for months.
So, I only bought one dress. And I'm still $60 better off with the bus and a new dress than I'd have been if I'd done my original day tour. Sometimes, things happen for a reason. 😉🤣

Random unrelated note - plastic bottle lids are attached to the bottle in Europe. (Last photo). You can't lose or litter the lid. And it's more likely to get recycled. It's slightly annoying to drink out of, though!

  • Avignon

    5 czerwca 2024, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Avignon town centre is in ancient area surrounded my medieval walls. It's known for the Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace) . I've been here before, but this time, I was lucky enough to stay in an old hotel overlooking the palace. Divine! And the hotel was gorgeous.

After a couple of drinks, my travel buddies decided to knock on the palace door to see if the Pope ('Frank') was home. 🤣

  • Heaven is a place on Earth

    6–8 cze 2024, Szwajcaria ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Wow, Switzerland is beautiful, and I didn't even get up into the mountains.

The crystal clear lakes, waterfalls everywhere with snowcapped mountains. If I was religious, this would be how I'd imagine heaven to look.

We stayed in a place called Wilderswil, and the view from my room was amazing.

As beautiful as it is, I couldn't live there. It's too strict for me. For example, you can't flush the toilet after 10 pm. And you're not allowed to hike naked... so I'm out! 😁 But I'll definitely be back for some hiking!

I love Edinburgh. I was here a few years ago as well. I love walking the Royal Mile and imagining myself back in medieval times. Although I probably would have been nailed up by my ears for doing something wrong.

As beautiful as Edinburgh is, I don't know how anyone can stand Scottish weather. Two of our 3 days were a top of 13 degrees, a cold breeze, and significant rain. In Summer. No, thank you!

  • London (with covid)

    16–22 cze 2024, Anglia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We arrived in London from Edinburgh. At this stage, I'd had a sore throat for a couple of days but was otherwise well.

On the following day, we had high tea on an original routemaster bus. I was a little more unwell that day, but we still enjoyed our high tea (except for the frozen cream!!!)

After going out for dinner and eating a bucket load of hot sauce and not being able to taste or smell it, I suspected I had covid. I had one test in my bag, and covid was confirmed.

Thank god it was a place I'd been to before (so I didn't feel I missed anything). We also stayed in the same place for 5 days, and it was an apartment. Unfortunately, I slept on a couch the whole time.

I still managed to do everything we had planned and showed Margaret around. And, I still averaged 25000-30,000 steps per day throughout this time.

We attended the Ceremony of the Keys, ABBA Voyage, and the Sky Garden. Plus, we went to most of the main areas. But, I wasn't flash and wasn't able to do my usual sunrise jaunts. I have very few photos (thankfully, I got amazing ones last time I was there).

So, this post doesn't include the usual London sites.

Ceremony of the keys (Tower of London)

Firstly, these are hard tickets to get, and involved getting tickets in the middle of the night at home on 1 May. They go the day they're released. So I was going to this event, even if I had to crawl there!

The Ceremony of the Keys is the process of locking up the Tower of London every night - and has been going for about 700 years. The sentry cries out, 'Halt, who comes there?' The Yeoman Warder replies, 'The keys.' 'Whose keys?' 'King Charles' keys.' 'Pass then, all's well.'

Aside from the monarch's name, this is the exact exchange that has been spoken for centuries and forms part of the traditional 'locking up' of the Tower of London. They also still wear the same outfits.

Previously, the monarch lived there, but now they're just locking up the crown jewels. This has happened every day without fail (even through the wars) and was only late once when they were bombed in WWII.

You can't photo or video the ceremony. But we were able to take a couple of photos in a courtyard afterwards. It's pretty cool being in the Tower of London at night! I thought it may have been a bit dry, but it was actually both interesting and enjoyable. We had a beefeater explaining it all the way through, and he was a hoot! I highly recommend this if you're going to London. It's a very minimal cost but you need to be organised with the tickets as they go really quickly.

We also went up to the Sky Garden, which is a 3 storey glass dome on a skyscraper. If you've been to London before, it's in the building known as the walkie-talkie. It's basically a garden in the sky with 360-degree views of London.

There is a restaurant and bar that you can book. You can also get free tickets in advance. They become available 3 weeks before, but they go very quickly. It's worth it for a quick look at the view. We saw people take picnics, which is pretty cool to do in the sky.

The photos in this post are the few I could get from the Sky Garden and the Tower of London when doing the Ceremony of the Keys.

This beautiful building has its own post. It's a shopping arcade with expensive stores. It's actually a covered pedestrian street that walks out to the Duomo. 😍

I got up pre dawn to get photos without bloody tourists!! During the day, this place is packed! There were a few homeless people sleeping here, I guess they at least have a roof over their head. A bloody nice roof, too!

    It was opened in 1867.

  • Lake Como (Bellagio)

    26 czerwca 2024, Włochy ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We spent 3 nights pretending we were rich and famous in Bellagio. I don't think we fooled anyone!

This area is absolutely gorgeous. However, the tourists in this area seemed a little different to other areas - maybe wealthier? We didn't feel like we fit in quite as well. I'm sure I didn't look the part walking up the street with my backpack. 🤣

Nevertheless, we had a lovely time visiting Menaggio and Varenna on the ferry and having a wine in each village. Our highlight was kayaking in Bellagio.

  • Malta (Valletta streets photos)

    8 lipca 2024, Malta ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Oh Malta, what can I say? You are fun, but a bit (a lot) crazy. 🤣

After a long day, we arrived and immediately loved the feel of Malta. That was until the fireworks started. And didn't stop for the whole 4 days we were there, even during the day. Yes, during the day where it was just a bang with no fireworks. I've never seen, heard, or felt anything like it - it was actually terrifying. Sometimes, it was every 30 seconds. It felt like bombs were going off. And they let them off everywhere. Sometimes, it was right near you. We really didn't enjoy it.

We asked the locals about it, and they're used to it. It's part of them. They have celebrations/feasts all the time. And fireworks are part of their celebrations.

Here is an article on Malta's firework traditions -
    https://www.yellow.com.mt/tips/culture/firework…

We are now scared of loud noises. 🤣

On a normal note, some of the places we explored were Valletta, Mdina, Mosta, the Hypogeum, and Blue Grotto.

We loved the bright, enclosed balconies on many of the buildings. We were bemused by the dungeon museum that had realistic torture scenes with body parts chopped off and put in a wheelbarrow...with sound effects. 😮

We are leaving Malta with more issues than we started with. 🤣

However, we do recommend Malta if you wear ear plugs and don't go in summer. (And maybe not go to the dungeon) 😁

  • Catania, Sicily, Italy

    10–13 lip 2024, Włochy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Ah, Catania, the 'black city' made of volcanic rock.

I'll admit it was a struggle to take 'beautiful' photos in Catania. I've never seen so much grafitti in my life. Grafitti is everywhere, even in affulent countries, but this is a whole different level!

Also, Mount Etna had erupted a week before, and the city was covered in a layer of ash. But even if you removed the new ash, there are layers of built-up dirt.

But the Catanese just put up fairy lights and colourful umbrellas and eat, socialise, and enjoy their lives.

They seem a resilient lot. Even the mess of Etna doesn't seem to faze them. Nor does it take away their love of Etna. She protects them. And when she erupts, they say their crops are so much better from the minerals she releases.

As our guide said, sometimes Etna is calm. And, sometimes, she erupts... just like a Cantanese woman. 🤣

We enjoyed Catania. She's not immediately beautiful, but she has a great personality! 🤣

  • Capri

    17 lipca 2024, Włochy ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Absolutely magical. Until the day tourists arrive.

We'd originally planned to do a day trip to Capri from Sorrento. I'm so glad we changed our minds and stayed for a couple of nights. I'm sure I wouldn't have loved Capri as much if we'd only done a day trip. Too many tourists, I'm sure it's doing irreparable damage.

We stumbled onto via Krupp at dusk and had this amazing path almost to ourselves. I can't explain it. It was such a special and unexpected moment.

Capri is best when the large day crowds have left the island, and you can find a quiet spot to yourself.

Denmark seems to be a really lovely (albiet expensive) country. Unfortunately, I missed the start of my trip here, so I didn't get as much exploration or photo time as I'd like.

I did squeeze a quick visit to see where Queen Mary lived, but her home didn't make the photo cut!

The last 2 photos are from our overnight ferry from Denmark to Norway.

In my opinion, the Danes are the most beautiful Scandinavians. They could actually be the most beautiful people of any country I've ever seen.

    What a cute place!!

Bergen is in Norway and is surrounded by mountains and fjords.

It's well known for Bryggen, which are traditional colourful wooden houses on the waterfront.

There is a funicular that takes you up the mountain for beautiful views over the town. At the top of the mountain, there are lots of troll statues. The Norwegians have a fascination with trolls!

I also tried a reindeer hotdog. It was ok, but I'm not in a rush for another one! It was basically a very expensive snag in bread!
