    Supper in Madison

    We left home early afternoon, have filled the gas tank twice and need gas again. We stopped at Subway to eat and have another 30 miles to go to our motel in Janesville, WI. The trees are already gaining color. We had a nice drive.Read more

    End of day one

    We checked into a Quality Inn. The last 30 miles was with headlights; we both agreed not to do that again!
    Since we started out later today than we had planned, we wanted to make it far enough south to be able to get through Chicago during the middle of the day.
    I mounted radial tires on '35 Ford spoked wheels for this trip. The ride is much smoother...which makes driving a long distance less tiring. I am looking forward to tomorrow's drive.    Read more

    Day at the Dunes

    The day started out with a fog advisory so we delayed our start. When the fog started to dissipate the car would not start due to the damp conditions. After drying wires under the hood, it finally struggled to life. We set out to pass through Chicago and encountered patient drivers. People gave us lots of room. The drive was pleasant. We visited the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore near Gary, Indiana. Nice beaches and large sand dunes...kind of like it's name suggests. We are staying in Benton Harbor this evening. Tomorrow we drive to Kalamazoo...and may stop at the Gilmore Car Museum while on the road.Read more

    Model A Day at the Gilmore

    I left the Hotel early to help Mark Moran park vendors on the grounds surrounding the Model A Museum; the last one arrived around 9:30. Glad to help out.
    There is good attendance today but not so crowded that is hard to see the exhibits. I found a 2nd mirror for my '31 SW restoration at the swap meet that matches what I have. I want one on the passenger side also so it was a good find.
    The tandem axle Woodie was a "one only" factory produced chassis. Every time I passed it, someone was on their knees checking out how they did it. I did too...

    Muskegon Irish Music Festival

    We have traveled to Muskegon to take in an Irish music festival with 8 stages, 22 bands and local youth groups performing. The Mona Shore fiddlers, a group of over 20 young performers, were awesome.
    The festival is held at Heritage Landing in Downtown Muskegon.
    We also visited the Hackley and Hume Mansions, two lumbermen in partnership in the 1880's. The two families were early benefactors of Muskegon and many of the streets and public buildings bear their names.
    We finished the day by traveling to Lansing and as we drove we noticed the trees are really starting to show color. We spotted dark skies and a rainbow when we were 18 miles from Lansing. We drove through 5 miles of heavy rain but the driver did not get too wet. The passenger did not fare as well!    Read more

    Ford Rouge Factory Tour and The Museum

    Ford builds only F150 pickups at the Rouge. Unfortunately there are no photos allowed in the production area. They are currently building the 2018 model year. Lots of automation but still many auto workers doing the light assembly work.
    We spent the rest of the day in the Henry Ford Museum which Mr. Ford dedicated in 1928 in an effort of preserving technology changes by displaying items and machines of different eras.

    Ford's Greenfield Village

    We spent most of the day in Greenfield Village visiting areas we missed last time we were here. There really is more than you can see in one day. There was occasional light rain during the day and there were no crowds. The exhibit personnel were able to spend lots of time with us answering our questions. Great lunch at Eagle's Tavern and rides on a 1913 Carousel, 1927 Model T Touring, 1930 AA Bus, horse drawn bus and a recently restored coal fired locomotive.
    We finished our day in Dearborn with a stop at Edsel and Eleanor's mansion on Shoreline Drive. We arrived too late for the last tour but they let us drive in and take some photos. Great staff at all the attractions we visited today. We finished the day by driving north to Salania, just across the border, in Canada.    Read more

    Traveling to Niagara Falls

    We traveled from Sarnia, Ontario to Niagara, Ontario today. Lots of grapes in the fields and wineries as we neared Niagara. This part of Canada is known for sweeter wines but we did not stop as Jean was on a mission to get to the Falls area and check things out at Niagara-on-the-Lake. This area is described as "Historic Old Town". The old buildings are very picturesque but they are all filled with little shops. I started taking photos of the buildings and beautiful boulevards covered with flowers and Jean vanished?
    I parked the car in front of the Prince of Wales Hotel and took some photos of the Model A with the flowered boulevard and the hotel in the background. Included in the photos are some of the inside of the hotel.    Read more

    The Falls (Getting Wet!) & Butterflies?

    Jean booked a bus tour that includes the major view points of the Falls. We started with "Journey behind the Falls" which takes one down over 150 feet below the top of the Falls to observation points. The roar of the water as it hits bottom drowns out all conversation. Next stop was down from the Falls to observe "Class 6 rapids". Then a stop in an enclosed tropical environment to view over 2000 butterflies. What a butterfly exhibit has to do with a tour of the Falls, I don't know but it was interesting. Last, was a boat ride to the base of the Falls to get a close (wet) view. Jean was able to get a couple great video clips from the boat. We finished day by walking down to a good viewing point of the Falls when they were illuminated with colored lights.Read more

    New York's Finger Lakes

    We left early and drove to Canandaigua, NY to start our scenic tour of New York's Finger Lakes. While in route we passed a body shop that had a strange bubble car parked in their lot. I had to swing back for a photo. Then we spotted a road-side produce stand that was striking and had to turn around again. Back to the Finger Lakes...they (eleven) were glacially carved mostly running north to south. The suggested tour we are following starts in the northwestern corner of the lakes and winds through several small towns each more quaint than the last. We stopped at the Dr. Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars in Hammondsport and sampled locally produced wines. This area is the second-largest wine region in the nation. There are over 130 Wineries and some 50 breweries. While in Hammondsport, we stopped at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. Mr. Curtiss built some of the earliest motorcycles starting around 1901. He set a land speed record in 1907 with a Curtiss V8-powered motorcycle. The V8 was designed for use in an airplane and was remarkably small. He went on to build some of the earliest commercially produced airplanes. Likely his greatest claim to fame is the invention of the "fifth wheel" trailer connection system. We are staying in Corning this evening. Before the sunset, I spent 45 minutes greasing/oiling the chassis, water pump, distributor, and chasing squeaks that always develop on a long trip. We are about 1800 miles into our trip at the end of today.Read more

    Finger Lakes (Day 2)

    Second day of our Finger Lakes tour started in Corning, NY. When in Corning, look at glass. We went to the Corning Museum where Jean took lots of pictures. I tried to keep up with her but when I would stop to read the placard with a glass piece and look up she had moved on. She really enjoyed it. I had signed up to make a glass pumpkin for a very special 8 year old (Olivia) who is really into Thanksgiving. It turned out it required no skill on my part to complete it but blow through the tube to expand the glass. We left Corning around noon and continued our route that wound through the lakes. There were some great views and the towns we passed through were quaint.
    We traveled through: Corning, Elmira, Horseheads, Watkins Glen, Lodi, Trumansburg, Ithaca, Aurora and Skaneateles. It was getting late in the day so we cruised to Watertown, NY for the evening.    Read more

    Armed Service Memorial

    Ottawa Downtown Tour

    We traveled to Ottawa, Ontario this morning arriving shortly after noon. While crossing the border we drove across a bridge with steel decking. The decking made the car lurch left to right as the tires aligned with the slats in the bridge decking. The second photo: A monument was built to honor the men who fought in WW 1 and then was later rededicated to all military who served in forgein wars. There are two military personnel posted at the site and when there is a change of the guards, the replacement guards along with a Commander and bagpiper in full dress march to the monument and have a short ceremony. After the exchange of guards, the group marches away to music by the piper. It was good to see. We booked a tour on an anphibious bus...yup, a bus that floats. They close the loading ramp in back, tell us where the life jackets are and then later in the tour, drive right into the river. I did not notice many (any) leaks.
    After the tour, we ate at an outdoor restaurant about a block from the US Embassy. After eating, we drove most of the loop we made on the bus with the car. I wanted to stop at the gated US Embasador's residence but Jean could not be coerced into ringing the bell...I couldn't do it...I was driving.
    We saw the Parliament Building, War Museum, Museum of History, the Prime Minister's residence, National Museum, National Gallery, US Embassy and then the views from the river. It has been unusually hot where and while we have been traveling the past week. The usual temp in Ottawa this time of the year is 19 degrees Celsius. Today it was 31. So much for planning a road trip in the fall to avoid the heat. We have been moving early in the day to avoid the worst.    Read more

    Quebec City

    We started out early from Ottawa with a full tank of gas and I removed all avoidances from the GPS. We had not traveled more than 30 miles and I noticed the road ahead on the GPS screen was passing over water in a strange arc. As we passed through the opening in the trees lining the road, we could see we were about to travel on a ferry. It was a pleasant surprise. About 200 miles into our drive, a young lady in a very sleek and new crossover came up alongside us and then fell back. She came up again with the passenger side window down and took a picture of us. She then slowly pulled ahead of us and was about 8 car lengths ahead of us when I noticed she was drifting towards the shoulder and guardrail on the left. A pickup was beside us following her when she hit the guardrail, threw a shower of gravel and then swerved back on to the lane partly sideways. I saw it coming and was on the brakes waiting to see which way I would need to go if she did not pull out of the swerve. She got it under control before we reached her. I would like to ask her if she got a good picture.
    The colors are starting to show as we approached Quebec City. We arrived at our hotel at about 3:00. We will check what there is to do and report....
    Well we walked to Old Quebec and looked around. Took some photos and ate supper at a sidewalk resturant. We recommend the salmon.    Read more

    Quebec City Bus Tour and St. Georges

    We took an early "Hop On" bus tour this morning and did not hop off during the route. We went to the top deck where we could get good pictures. We were finished with the tour by 11:30. We checked out of our hotel at noon. It is predicted to reach record highs again today so we made a stop shortly after noon at the Joan of Arc memorial park and took some photos and then drove to Saint Georges, 90 Kilometers south, where we have a room for the evening. I would guess we will avoid the heat for the rest of the day.Read more

    Drive to Bar Harbor

    We passed through customs at 8:00 am. The border patrol went back twice to check our plate. He smiled when he returned the second time and said "And Pioneer plates too."
    We were on a Scenic Byway called Old Canada Road. Jean took some good photos which you will see below. There were multiple moose crossing signs along the highway. I wanted to see a moose; Jean did not. About 140 miles into the drive, the skies became overcast and we drove through a heavy mist for about 20 miles. 40 miles from Bar Harbor, the skies had cleared. The temperature in Bar Harbor is in the low 60's; comfortable after the past few days of heat. There was a roadside timber retaining wall just north of Moscow, Maine that the residents decorated with birdhouses. The roads through northern Maine provided the best "drive" of the trip so far. Beautiful scenery. We arrived in Bar Harbor around 2:30 and moved luggage into our room. We walked to a cafe known for their lobster rolls and we shared one. Ooh...good! We are about 2800 miles into our trip.Read more

    Bass Harbor Light Station

    About 12 miles from Bar Harbor lies Bass Harbor's Light Station. This lighthouse has the distinction of being the most photographed lighthouse in Maine. The lighthouse is still in operation and the residence attached to it is occupied by an active Coast Guard member.
    After leaving the lighthouse; we stopped at the Seal Cove Auto Museum. The museum chronicles the 15 year debate of whether to allow automobiles on the island starting around 1900. It also displays about 100 early autos and motorcycles. The displays of the autos and the yarn of the debate made for an interesting stop.
    We had a late lunch at Bar Harbor Inn and then some maintenance on the car filled the rest of the afternoon. Checked and topped the lube in the differential and overdrive. Greased the chassis and adjusted the brake wedges a couple clicks.    Read more

    York Harbor & Ogunquit Beach

    Today was mostly road time traveling south on Coast Highway 1. Took a photo at the pier at New Harbor and checked out Ferry State Park. Ate a late lunch at Maine Diner. As good as any chowder I can remember. Happened upon a car lot filled with classic cars so I stopped. They had a building on the far side of the lot as wide as the lot and about 60 feet deep full of the cars he did not want exposed. There was a 29 Phaeton stuffed between other makes and models that was a pretty good restoration. There were no prices on any of the cars. I took photos of a F1 Ford and a Mercury pickup of similar age. They were both original but somewhat restored. Stopped at Ogunquit Beach because Jean read it was rated one of the best beaches. We staged a lobster infested Model A photo for the benefit of Lucas and Alex back in New Prague who are 8 and 6 years old. We caught the lobsters and are taking them back for them. We are staying in York Harbor for the evening.Read more

    Road to and from Boston

    The drive to Boston on Coastal 1 and 1A lead us through Portsmouth, Hampton, NH, Newburyport, Ipswich, Essex and Salem. We stopped for some photos at a coast side antique warehouse and had a very entertaining conversation with one of the owners and some patrons. They enjoyed that we were experiencing our trip in our old car. Leaving downtown Boston, we took advantage of Interstate 93 due to the late hour. Traffic on the freeway was a breeze compared to inner Boston.Read more

    Boston

    Most of the drive through the outer areas of Boston was good but the closer we got to downtown Boston, not so much. Our GPS lead us on a 10 mile round trip goose chase, at a snail's pace at times. We parked in a public garage near Boston Commons and then walked the Freedom Trail. We had also planned to see the Boston Tea Party reinactment but with the driving error and subsequent traffic, we missed it. I dropped Jean at the site and then circled the area to allow her time to take some photos.Read more

    Roads to and around Newport, RI

    Today we traveled from south of Boston to Newport Rhode Island. We came across an interesting elevating railroad bridge in Buzzard's Bay. We stopped at an antique store because of the colorful fisherman's floats and met Coco Adams who was minding the store for a friend. We had to get a photo of Coco and her husband and then one of ourselves. We were passing by a University and saw a beautiful residence put to use as a gatehouse.Read more

    Rhode Island Coast Drive

    We traveled the coast road over a good portion of Rhode Island. We started by visiting the Beavertail Lighthouse and found the eroded coastal stone below the lighthouse amazing. The original lighthouse was established in 1749.
    The twin towers of the "Towers and Casino" is a local landmark. We stopped to take photos at two beautiful homes along Coast road and we crossed a long span bridge while on the road today.    Read more

    Mystic Seaport, Connecticut

    We decided to take a break from driving and stay an extra day in the Mystic Seaport area. Jean spent the morning in Historic Downtown Mystic (From earlier in the trip the term "Historic Downtown" means shopping.) I spent the morning at the Mystic Seaport Museum where there are recreations of historic buildings, actual ship restorations in progress, maritime exhibits and hands on displays and a staff that will stop the project they are working on to answer questions. They are currently restoring the Mayflower ll. It is in dry-dock and a crew of about 10 are working at the actual ship with an estimated additional 20 people in various shops making replacement parts.
    We both went to the Nautilus submarine exhibit. We toured the sub and spent time looking at the sub displays showing the history of the sub fleet.    Read more
