We landed at the international airport of Kona. The first impression: Black cooled lava fields far and wide at the really small airport. You notice that the vegetation here is marked by the volcanoes and it's sulfur fumes, unlike Kauai. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

A day that will stay in my memory for a long time! We didn't know what to expect at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and whether we would even get to see real lava. Sulfur fumes await us at Kilauea Crater and a loooong hike across pitch black lava fields. And yes, we were lucky!!! Land creation by mother earth. near the ocean. Fascinating and breathtaking. 4169 m above sea level in one day...possible, but...the air gets very thin very fast at this altitude and you should not try it with a normal car ;-). We dared the adventure, even if not quite legal. In the morning we started with flip-flops and shorts from Kailua-Kona. Mauna Kea is like a big flat bell and you virtually drive up in serpetines. No paved roads above a certain altitude was a game changer :D. After our car shows some smoke development we reached, after a very short ;-) acclimatization at about 2700 m, the W. M. Keck Observatory. With best view over the clouds and also over to Maui...crazy!!!Leia mais

Hilo and Akaka Falls

From 4169 m altitude down to sea level we visited Hilo in the west of the island on the same day. This side of the island is more humid and rainy compared to the east, which is why Hilo resembles a green oasis. We then drove back to Kona via the north and admired the Akaka waterfalls with a height of 135 m after a small hike. Side note: Akaka is named after Chief 'Akaka-o-ka-nī'au-oi'o-i-ka-wao. ;-)Leia mais

On the last day on Big Island we had three stops: The black sandy Punaluʻu Beach, the place where James Cook passed away (there is something piratey about this place, I loved it! :-) ) and the beach with the most beautiful sunset: ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach, near Waikoloa.
