  • Nice Day 1

    3 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

After arriving, we headed north a couple blocks to the Gare du Sud, an original train station in Nice. It's now a multi venue restaurant with various food related and clothing shops. Trendy but not upscale, we had lunch here that was pretty tasty, but more than enough to not want a big dinner later.
Later on, we explored the main shopping drag, Avenue Jean Médicin and the Place Masséna. Tons of people out. This is definitely the most tourist-visited place on our trip so far. Lots of different languages heard. There's just about every shop available along this street. From there, we headed out to the Promenade des Anglais, the big walkway along the coast. There were a few people on the beach, and some doing various activities, like wind surfing, in the water. Probably still a bit chilly for that yet, but we didn't go down to find out. Regardless, the water is a beautiful blue, hence the name Côte d'Azur.

  • Nice Day 2

    4 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Bit of an adventure today. We eventually got going and headed over toward the port district. Luckily, we arrived just before lunch, so the crowds were pretty small. We found a great place to eat at the Place de Pin. Sitting in the warm sun was a real treat after the last three weeks. Our Asian inspired lunches were excellent. My curry was listed as three peppers hot, but I personally would have only given it a one.
After lunch, we headed up the hill of the Colline du Chateau. This hill dominates the city and has spectacular views of the city, the mountains and the Mediterranean. Again, lots of people out enjoying the day. It's still cool, but the sun is out and it's quite lovely. Walked around the port area a bit, then headed back. In the afternoon, we took the tram as far as it would go into the foothills. We actually discovered this was not a place we'd like to be,though the views were really great. Not a particularly nice part of town.

  • Nice Day 3

    5 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

We went to the flower market this morning. They do sell some beautiful plants and flowers here, but it is mainly a produce market. Some really good looking stuff. This is really close to the Promenade, so we walked out there and strolled east, around the Colline de Chateau and into the port again. From there we got lunch, then eventually boarded a very crowded bus to take us to the Rothschild mansion and gardens over on Cap Ferrat. It was a terribly windy and bumpy ride, especially seeing we stood cheek to jowl with everyone else. A ton of traffic and a huge menace of bicycles made for start and stop motion, too. A very unpleasant ride.
But, we eventually made it and got to tour the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, as well as its extensive gardens. The house was really lovely, and while definitely a house built with no expense spared, was not over the top or gaudy. The gardens were beautiful, and some of the roses were blooming nicely. The Villa was having a rose event that weekend, so there were a number of vendors there selling different things, but they had lots of roses for sale.
The return trip to Nice was just as terrible as the ride out. Overcrowded, standing room only on windy roads through the hills. We were definitely glad to be back.
We ended the day with a walk through the Musicien and Fleur districts. Stately old apartment buildings are the main construction here, with a few newer builds in these quiet, residential areas.

  • Nice Day 5

    7 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today we headed south toward Antibes. There is an entertainment area just north of there in Biot that has an amusement park and a Marineland, which is where we went. It ended up being a gorgeous day, although there were definitely thick clouds hanging around the mountains.
This is a very well done park, with a number of shows, sea lions, dolphins and orcas, as well as aquariums and a couple penguin displays. The park is dedicated to preserving habitat and rescuing hurt animals.
An easy day with both walking and sitting and an easy train ride both to and from.

  • Nice Day 4

    7 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

A bit overcast and cool today, but still we'll take it after the previous few weeks. Today we headed to the Cimiez district. It's mostly a hilly area east of the main part of Nice. On the posh side, it was host to Queen Victoria and was the high end district before Cap Mont-Ferrat and Villefranche-Sur-Mer took over. It also has an ancient history.
We visited the Roman ruins, mostly a series of baths, plus a nearly demolished arena. This was a huge settlement, by the day's standards. The town was served by not just one bath, but three, one for each district. They all had heated pools, as well as warm and cold pools for bathing. And two of them had swimming pools. The Matisse museum is also right here, and some of the excavations began with its construction. We didn't go in though because all the Matisse material is currently on loan to other museums. Go figure.
Later, we walked through a couple more beautiful residential districts in old Nice.

  • Nice Day 6

    8 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Another beautiful day. Headed out to the port for a cruise on the Nice and Villefranche-Sur-Mer bays. We were glad we got tickets the day before because it was packed boat. Today is a national holiday, so it wasn't just the typical tourists on board. This hour long cruise took us first into the Villefranche-Sur-Mer bay, just east of Nice. This is a very posh area, with lots of very expensive homes owned and used by very famous people. The apartments here can also cost into the multi millions. The entrance to the bay was filled with a massive cruise ship. We then headed back toward Nice and did a tour over to Hotel Negresco and headed back to the port. An absolutely lovely morning
After debarking the boat, we headed over to the old town for lunch. This place was really packed, so I can only imagine that during tourist season, it's over run. Anyway, we had a lunch of the local onion tart and simple bread, the pissaladière and socca. While it actually didn't look very appetizing, it was quite tasty. After lunch we walked around the old town. This is the usual warren of medieval streets lined with shops and restaurants. Two large churches there are very ornate and in amazing condition.
After a walk down the Promenade, we decided to sit on the pebble beach for a while, which was super enjoyable. Then we headed back home by way of the Musicien district.
We resteda bit, then headed out again to walk through the northern part of the Liberation district, then came back. But a quick stop for some ice cream was in order first.

  • Nice Day 7

    9 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Didn't take any pictures today, but we did a lot of stuff in places we've already been to. Decided to head back to the old town for lunch, mainly so we could get ice cream later at a place that we scoped out earlier. The old town was packed, so we settled on an Indian restaurant that looked interesting, plus we hadn't eaten Indian food in a while. We got seated by the probable owner who could've cared less if we were there. Now, realize that the place was full of customers, but after maybe 15 minutes, no one came to take an order or bring water. So, we got up and left and found a nice Italian place tucked away on a less busy corner. Service and the food were really great. Perhaps some of the best food I've ever eaten.
We were a bit full after that, so we walked the Promenade again. The beach was a lot more used today with loads of people sunbathing, swimming, and playing volleyball. Wearing off a few calories from lunch, we headed back for our ice cream.
We had seen the poster for an organ recital at the cathedral, so, even though we were already there we headed back to the apartment for a couple hours before heading back again.
The recital was very good, with world renowned organist Frederick Deschamps at the console. The program was to raise money to refurbish the current instrument. The organ definitely wasn't in top condition, but it totally filled the space. Nice, typical program and the organist was top notch.

  • Nice to Rouen

    10 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Had an exceptionally easy start to the day. Not too early, not too late, and we were easily on the train with lunch in hand. This TGV was a much nicer ride than the one going to Nice. But, once we got to Marseilles, we didn't move for a long time. Apparently there was a malfunction in the switching system. That put us about 20 minutes late getting into Paris. That might've been fine except it was really 25 minutes late, there were big crowds and the directions for making our connection were bad to non-existent.
So, after waiting in line for 20 minutes to buy a one day pass, we finally made it on the RER. Amazingly enough, our connecting train was scheduled to be 15 minutes late. But, as we had to make another connection from the RER, or walk, we didn't have enough time. We chose to walk. Probably missed our train by 2 minutes. But, all is well that ends well, right? The next train to Rouen was right there and we got on board. Happy times!
Arriving in Rouen, we took off for our apartment. Cool place in an old half timbered building, that has since been covered over. Anyway, 82 narrow steps later, we arrived at the door. We unlocked the lock and couldn't get in as the deadbolt lock had been locked, and we had no key. We seated ourselves on the rickety old stairs and waited about a half an hour for our landlord to answer an email about our dilemma. Then, we waited at least another hour before the cleaning lady arrived with keys. Of course, she didn't have the deadbolt key either, so after a few phone calls and pushing on the door, probably another half hour went by and she forced the door open. Apparently the deadbolt hadn't been opened completely before the door shut, so just a piece of it was catching.
So after a very long day, we finally were in our apartment.

  • Rouen Day 2? - Giverny

    11 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We started out late in the morning to board the train to Vernon - Giverny. After the previous day's experience, we weren't keen to get going at the break of dawn. But, we probably should have as the crowds were huge. This was part of a long holiday weekend, and there was a ton of stuff in bloom, so half of Paris was there. But we made the most of it and enjoyed the scenery.
A lot of spectacular flowers, and it was definitely cool to be in the place where Monet painted some of the exact scenery. Of all the things I liked best, I thought the tree peonies were amazing. I've seen them in catalogs, but never in person.
Luckily this isn't a gigantic place because the train schedule left a bit to be desired. We headed back to Rouen and recovered from the crowds and the day before.

  • Rouen Day 3

    12 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Today is the day to explore Rouen. There is so much history here, and there are many historical buildings. Definitely the biggest city I've seen that has so many half timbered buildings, as well as a plethora of gigantic medieval church/cathedrals. Built up by the Vikings 1100 years ago, this area has seen plenty of tumult. From the Viking invasion and assimilation into who would become Normans, to the Hundred Year War ending essentially with Jean d'Arc being burned at the stake here, Richard the Lionhearted to William the Conquerer, this city has much to see.Okumaya devam et

  • Rouen Day 4

    13 Mayıs 2024, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Our final day in France. More exploring today, including south of the river Seine, to the Jardin des Plantes. Unfortunately, there is no close by public transportation, so we took the Metro and walked a ways. There were some nice things there, but it's definitely not being kept to the standards of its early history.
We had lunch close by at La Table de Benoit. This was an excellent lunch, with an excellent host in Benoit. We got there toward the end of the lunch hour, so by the time our meals came, the whole place had pretty much cleared out. This gave Benoit the opportunity to get to know his American diners. We talked at length about our travels, genealogy, and food. And it was all in French.
Later, we walked through the old town again to close out our time here.
