The pizza is amazing at San Juan de Ortega. Worth all 15 miles of getting here. The father and son run such a cute little hobbit albergue!

Walked 16 miles mostly alone, but spent some time with Joseph, a Spanish painter. He spoke little English and I spoke little Spanish, but we cobbled together conversations here and there. He asked me what my passion is. But we mostly walked in silence. He’d wait for me at turns and corners, though. Then he’d burst randomly into English songs, sometimes.Les mer

16 miles. Nope. Don’t stay in San Bol. It’s this random albergue off the side of the road, with nothing around it. There’s no heater, no wifi and terrible signal. I spent most of the day in my sleeping bag, trying to stay warm. I only came out of my shell for dinner. The albergue host made paella and sang and danced for us. I wish it made up for the cold, but it didn’t!Les mer

16 miles. In Albergue Hogar del Peregrinos, which has a cozy living room and heater. They forgot I made a reservation, so for 10 minutes, I didn’t know if I would have to walk another 8km. (I saw a few people ask for beds and the owner saying no.) Turns out I get to sleep on the couch, lol.

The entire walk was rainy and wet, but I listened to “Monster in the Hollows” by Andrew Peterson to keep my mind off being cold. It’s going to rain tomorrow, all day, too 😥Les mer

14.5 miles. Woke up with still-damp clothes and walked into a rainy situation where they got even more wet. The wind was even worse. And the cold!

Today was so difficult. I wanted to quit and take a bus, but then I met Bill, a Scottish man who gently encouraged me to walk with him after we finished our snack breaks. He talked the whole way, and before I knew it, I had walked outta the city. When we reached a fork in the road, he decided to take the longer, scenic route. I was bent on taking the shortest way possible. His joy made the cold less cold, though. I hope he has the best retirement in his dreamy German town.

I stopped at La Casa de Dona Petra for lunch, and decided that my shivering self could go no further. I stayed and found other weary pilgrims.Les mer

20.5 miles today 😰. I was really motivated to get to Ledigos for a room I booked in an albergue. (Can you tell I’m done sleeping on the couch?) Good thing the albergue was worth it! After a long, 10-mile stretch on the meseta with no pit stops and just a flat open road, I thought I might lose my mind for a little bit. But the albergue was truly worth it. Some witty ladies from Maine invited me to eat w them for dinner. Two of them have done the Camino before 🙀Les mer

Rough, rough day of 16 miles. The meseta is really getting to me. Sometimes, I don’t see anyone else for miles, and the gravel and rocks are killing my feet. After 5 miles today, I was so done.

Reisende Some of them walked more miles and are now ahead of me in different towns, or they’re behind me by a few days! Or they went home because of injuries :( Or went home because they only had 3 weeks of vacation.

Met some Americans over breakfast and joined their group today! We walked 16 miles together. They just arrived yesterday and went at a seriously fast clip. But I enjoyed how they soaked in the surroundings. They’d stop to point out storks on churches and actually read signs. During a break, we found ramen and smoothies!

For dinner, I ate at Albergueria del Camino, which has the most amazing 14 euro dinner. Spaghetti bolognese for first course, fish for second and lemon cream for dessert. Highly recommend.Les mer

Took the bus into Leon 😅 Last time I walked into a bigger city, it was so industrial and not worth it. I’m saving my knees for a better view. Stayed in Hostal Albany, which is right next to the cathedral! Leon’s Old Town is definitely charming.Les mer
