  • Day 1

    4 giugno, Scozia ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

We set of via taxi from Peebles to Edinburgh airport. Our flight was slightly delayed so we were a bit worried about missing our connection flight which was in Doha. We had a Burrito for lunch and flight was fairly smooth (6.5 hours). We passed the new E-gates which Sinéad was the development manager for so was proud to see them up! First time flying Qatar and think it was a notch up on Emirates. I watched Once Upon a Time on Hollywood, good film!

After we landed we found out we were 1 hour delayed so had a bit of a mad panic through connections to run through Doha Airport and make our connection to Hong Kong. I managed a bit of sleep on this leg as was overnight (7.5 hours).

Once we landed (2pm Hong Kong time) was really smooth in terms of getting through passport control (way easier than Japan) and our bags were right there to pick up. Transport into Hong Kong took about 30 mins and was really efficient. So far been very impressed with Chinese transport as it’s all orderly and on time just like Japan.

After we checked in to our hotel we wandered around the local area called Wan Chai which is on-an island. It was bustling with people leaving work and the smell was amazing from all the peking duck. There were these narrow busses which reminded me of Harry Potter bus that were a mix between trams and buses! Also for scaffolding they only use bamboo which was weird to see! We walked over to a restaurant I looked up and had some amazing Chinese/tawainese food! We shares some spinach, sweet and sour noodles, dumplings and some noodles with some Tsing Taos!

After dinner we walked to the harbour which was near to see the city scape of HongKong and a light show they do every day at 8pm. The light show wasnt great as was slightly foggy but I love how the lights come on on all the buildings at night and it feels like you’re living in the future in 2080! After food we had a drink at a bar and then were defeated by jet lag at around 10pm!

  • Day 2

    5 giugno, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We got up early and went for breakfast in the hotel as they had a deal, wasn’t great but was enough to give us energy! Slightly jet lagged night and was awake at 1am for a bit but thankfully got back to sleep.

We then set off got the underground to the main line to another island in the east of Hong Kong. I’ve been impressed with the underground and trains here as everything is clean and on time and it’s contactless for everything and cheap! When we got there we opted for the cable car all the way to the top of the mountain over huge forests. Honk kong is built up city in the middle of a jungle! They don’t do houses and all accommodation are huge skyscraper apartment blocks.

One thing I didn’t mention yesterday was the humidity! It’s so humid even when it isn’t sunny. We now realise everything is built around the humidity. Every single building and everywhere you walk is all in air con and bridges connect each building with shade in the city! So you rarely actually have to walk outside. On our first day we couldn’t understand why it wasn’t great for pedestrians but now realise you almost have to walk on a higher level and walk between buildings on foot bridges!

We got the cable car up after a short queue! Amazing views over the jungle and it took about 25 minutes to reach the Big Buddha which involved a lot of steps in the heat to make! We had a walk around it and also visited a monastery there which had some really well kept and ornate rooms with incense everywhere!

After this we took a cable car down (luckily got oour own one!) and had some lunch in Shake Shack. It’s fast food but as far as fast food goes it was the best I’ve had! By some chance we also noticed that the train station by the cable cars had a huge outlet so I picked to some new trainers (needed something with more spring as walking a ton). Sinead picked up some bath stuff. Very cheap prices.

We then took the train back to our island (Hong Kong island). We got off a stop early and walked through the financial district which was filled with designer shops and big banks. The British influence is huge here as we passed Marks and Spencer and Harvey Nics! All of the Chinese were on suits. We went by the port to book tickets for our ferry over to Macau (another island) for Monday.

Dropped off bags and chilled in the hotel for an hour or so before heading back out for food. Initially the place I’d wanted to trip had a massive queue to get in so we stumbled into a noodle restaurant instead. Had some amazing noodles with pork and shared some chive dumplings. Everything here is with chopsticks so slowly getting the hand of it and good for me forces me to eat slower!

After we went for some gin cocktails in a local bar. Temperature is great at night despite it being humid during the day, so you can sit outside at night in shorts and T-shirt easily. Fought through the jet lag today which is almost and got to bed late so wouldn’t wake up in the middle of the night.

  • Day 3

    7 giugno, Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We got up at 8 and went for breakfast at a local place around us as I spotted they had a top of the range coffee machine ‘La Mazoracca’. We had some nice poached eggs and avocado on toast as needed energy for our hike.

Today was a sunny warm day and humidity was crazy so we wanted to go early till avoid the main heat on the afternoon. Sinéad’s cousin who lived in Hong Kong for 3 years recommended us a hike to do called the ‘Dragons Back’ which went over the south part of the Hong Kong island and had great views up on top of the clouds. We took the metro to Shau Kei Wan and then got the bus down to the start of the hike!

Took us around an hour to get to the top which was tough with our rucksacks through the jungle! I don’t think I’ve ever sweat as much! We went above the clouds, for some great views of the jungle with huge skyscrapers sticking out before going down and then another 2 hours round the side of the peak towards a cove we’d been recommended to go to called Big Wave Beach! By this stage we were soaked through with sweat so the idea of a swim on the beach was amazing!

We had brought our swim stuff with us and towels so had an amazing dip in the sea and went for a drink in a local bar there in the cove. Sinéad had her first coconut and I had a smoothie which was refreshing! We then took another bus to Shek-o another nearby town. We were recommended to try a Thai place there for lunch which was delicious. After we got the bus back to Shau Kei Wan and metro back to the flat.

We got back at 4pm (peak heat and humidity) and had a much needed shower and chill time. Yesterday when walking through the financial district we noticed alot of businessmen in nice suits and we when walking back we passed a tailors near the hotel. I decided to get a new suit as I needed one for work so I went in and chose my colour and material (French navy + cashmere wool) and got measured. The tailor convinced me that this tailoring would be 5x more expensive than the UK but unsure if that was true of just his sales tactics!

After I got fitted (we will need to come back again for more fitting 1pm tomorrow) we decided to go to a rooftop bar we had looked up in our area for sunset. We got to the building and took the lift to the 30th floor with amazing views of Hong Kong island. We had some nice cocktails and some nuts and shared some Japanese chicken!

After drinks and watching the sunset we headed down around 8 and stopped for a bite to eat at a Vietnamese place.

  • Day 4

    8 giugno, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

We had a much needed long lie this morning as we had nothing planned for the morning and a late night yesterday! We had a late breakfast at the same place as yesterday as it’s convenient and good as right beside the hotel.

Sinéad wanted to go to the local mass at 11.30am so I went with her. The modem church was packed out even though we arrived early so we had to sit just outside. The mass was in English and there was a lot of Philippinos there. They are very health conscious, bow instead of shaking hands and dip the bread into wine instead of drinking it at communion. After mass we walked back to near the hotel as I had another fitting for my new suit. The tailors is owned by two brothers David and Michael who are really nice guys. They spoke with broken English and told me they had a lot less customers in the last few years due to brits leaving Hong Kong (a lot of their customers base was brits working in the financial district).

I had three of them take my measurements and I also got fitted for a shirt. I think as I’m leaving on Wednesday it’s all hands on deck to get it made! I’ll pick up my finished suit Tuesday evening. After, we walked to the Victoria harbour ferry port to cross into mainland china and the other side of Hong Kong. The ferry was easy to get and only 50 pence each!

It was a scorcher today with 31 degrees but 68% humidity! Definitely the hottest day so was tough to walk around in the open as you sweated so much as soon as you were in the sun! We went inside a big exhibition centre to get some of the air con! One thing about Hong Kong is because of the intense humidity they get the aircon is amazing everywhere! We got some food in a fancy department store that was good prices, we bought had really good sandwhiches presented emmaculatly and shared an almond croissant for dessert. They import everything for baking from France and everything was handmade onsite in an open kitchen. Everything here is like Japan and so well organised and clean. It’s amazing to me how far ahead this part of Asia is compared to the UK. Everything is more efficient, they are living in 2050!

After lunch because of it being the hottest part of the day we decided to do the Hong Kong museum of Art . It was free and really good with an exhibition on calligraphy and Snus bottles (amazingly intricate considering they were 500 years old). After we headed to another museum this time the Space Museum to walk around and get the great aircon! At 10 Hong Kong dollars (aka £1) it was a steal.

At around 6 we decided to go back out as thought it might have cooled down a bit. While still humid and uncomfortable it was ok enough to walk though Koloon park as it was shady there. After the park we located another roof top bar to have a cocktail (pricey but strong) and see this part of Hong Kong from above! After our drink and sunset Sinéad wanted to go see the temple street night market which we walked about 20 mins to get to. We stopped off on-route to try an egg bubble waffle which was nice! It’s amazing how humid it still was at night! Sinéad bought some bits and pieces at the market and we then went for a quick bite to eat before taking the metro back to our hotel. The food, while cheap, wasn’t great, I ordered chicken and it came stone cold (apparently that’s how it’s meant to be eaten!) luckily they heated it up for me!

  • Day 5

    9 giugno, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

We got up early to do and headed straight Victoria Harbour as we had booked a ferry across to Macau. We picked up a quick bite to eat for breakfast on route. The ferry ride across was about an hour with some nice views of Hong Kong waterfront. Once it got going it was quite fast. Everything in Macau was in Portuguese which I hadn’t realised before hand was an old Portuguese colony for close to 500 years!

Was interesting seeing the influence Portugal still had there as all signs were in Portuguese and some of the casinos were Portuguese like the Grand Lisboa. I also noticed they seem to love “egg tarts” here which may also be a Portuguese influence. Was another sunny and very humid day and as we wanted to go visit some of the casinos we weren’t sure about it the dress code so dressed smart casual (I carried some jeans in my rucksack in case I needed to change).

Once we arrived on Macau we had to go through passport control as its mainland China and technically a municipality. We got the free shuttle bus to the Venetian Casino to start. There are buses going to 20+ casinos dotted around Macau. The Venetian is the world’s biggest casino at 550,000 square feet! It’s hard to get across the scale of it with huge rooms with polished marble floors and giant chandeliers. Designer shops left and right but it does feel a bit weird that the whole place has been funded from gambling. The majority of the gamblers (99%) were Chinese and I’d say more than 60% were female! I had to be careful about taking photos inside as they are big on privacy!

We were a bit overwhelmed as there were thousands of Chinese and noise and lights everywhere! I wanted to play blackjack and had budgeted myself about £200 or 2000 Hong Kong Dollars. Sinéad and me found an empty table to play with the dealer and thankfully I went on a hot run (three blackjacks in a row) and quickly turned my 2000 into 4600, so roughly profit of £250! Sinéad got me to cash in thankfully so we left the Venetian on a high!

After the Venetian we wandered over to the Parisian (a lot of the huge casinos are connected) and had a walk around the casino floor there. We walked through the shopping mall (all the expensive shops were deserted) and then got some food in one of the Japanese udon restaurants there with some of the winnings (rest went on dinner and towards the new suit). We tried the macau beer which was actually really nice. Macau has its own currency but Hong Kong Dollars are still accepted thankfully

After lunch we took the free bus over to the Grand Lisboa. This was more traditional casino and less extravagant but was still mobbed. Was interesting for me to see in all the casinos by far the most popular game was Baccarat (I think an Italian game). 80% of the tables were Baccarat so the Chinese must go nuts for it. Sinéad had a go on virtual roulette and won a few bets. I was happy with my winnings so stayed clear the rest of the day. .There isn’t much to do in Macau besides gamble and it’s too hot to walk outside so we called it a day as were worn out from the hustle and bustle and bussed it back to the port for our night ferry (7pm one).

We got back about 8pm and took the metro to our hotel. On route we stopped for dinner and I had some sweet and sour pork that was delicious and Sinéad had a Malaysian curry.

  • Day 6

    10 giugno, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

Another humid hot day today (we anticipated rain the whole week and it hasn’t rained once!) We tried somewhere new today for breakfast. We both had some breakfast Bao buns and a smoothie + coffee for me.

I’ve been pretty impressed with the quality of coffee here as most places have really good coffee although it is around £3 for an espresso so isn’t cheap!

After breakfast we walked over to the Admiralty Metro station. This was tough in the heat as we hadn’t walked from this angle before so was slightly awkward to find the entrance! We then took the metro to the south of Hong Kong Island to Ocean Park, an amusement/wildlife park that Sinéad’s cousin recommended to us to check out. We went through Aberdeen which I found funny as I went to uni there and there were street names I recognised!

Thankfully as it was a weekday and humid conditions the park was almost empty so we had no queues the whole day. This is what we wanted hence us booking on a Tuesday rather than weekend We took the Ocean park express to to the summit and did a few roller coasters! Not having to queue was the best thing about it. We then walked through the fair and I had a go at one of the knock down the can games that are usually scams. Thankfully this one wasn’t and I channeled my inner Mahomes and won a couple of cuddly toy prizes for Sinéad!

After we checked out the aquarium to see some cool sharks and checked out the giant pandas they had there. Apparently when Hong Kong became recognised as a free state the Chinese gifted them two panda twins. I managed to catch one of them doing a commando roll but mostly they were just sitting eating! We went up a cool tower that gave us amazing views of the park and surrounding area of the southern part of Hong Kong Island.

We took the cable car down at around 3 as I was getting seriously warm and dehydrated in the humidity! We grabbed a small bite to eat and took the amazing air coned metro back to our hotel as I was due to pick up my suit at 5.

After a quick chill time we went by the store to pick it up and I tried it on. Seemed to be good quality and fitted well so I was thankful for them turning something around so fast! Shook hands with David the owner and went off for dinner.

The first day we arrived we walked past an authentic Chinese place with a huge queue around the block. We’ve been told to always go where the locals go so we tried our luck again today. Thankfully the queue wasn’t too bad (tried to capture it in one of the photos) so we went for it. For chatting a nice Chinese guy in the queue who told us this place was famous in Hong Kong and recommended going for the pork cutlets they serve with spicy curry sauce and rice.

The place was tiny and packed out so much so that we actually were seating opposite from a woman who had just ordered. Was a bit alien at first with the eye contact weird but we got chatting to her and she was also hyping the place up. She explained she used to work in the area and was walking through so came by for old times sake.

Portion sizes are huge so we got one to share with some beef noodles. It came quick and did not disappoint , I think the best pork I’ve ever had and I love anything breaded! Noodles were also amazing and we polished it off at a rapid rate! There was no menus , no English, no bills just an old chinese woman serving us and shouting and the lady opposite translating but probably the best meal for me in Hong Kong. And it was cheap!🇭🇰

After the meal we were stuffed and walked over to the bar we had drinks at the other night! After a couple we called it a night and headed back for our last night on our hotel. Early start tomorrow for our trip to Seoul.

We’ve loved our time in Hong Kong and it’s been a mix of craziness, amazing food and good culture! Hong Kong island was the place to be as you can get around easily. The humidity has been tough at times and as I write this the heavens have opened so perfect time to leave. Now onto Seoul for the final week 🫡

  • Day 7

    11 giugno, Corea del Sud ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Shorter penguin today as was mainly a day of travel. We had a local breakfast in Hong Kong and then got the airport bus to the Incheon airport. We got our first bit of rain as soo as we got into the airport and the heavens opened so a great time to leave!

We both exchanged all our leftover Hong Kong dollars to Korean Won. Our flight was Cathay Airlines and was only 4 hours across to Seoul.

We arrived and thankfully as part of a booking.com promo Sinéad has managed to wangle a pickup from the airport to drop us off at our hotel. We were met by a young Korean guy who didn’t speak a word of English and we spoke to via translate apps. He drove us in a really comfy minibus like van which we reclined our seats in and chilled!

Was nice seeing the sunset over the Seoul night scape. Journey was roughly 45 mins and we arrived at our hotel/hostal. More rustic than Hong Kong but it will do the job! We are staying in a hipster area of Seoul called HongDae.

Once we dropped off the bags it was late so we went to a local Indian place across the road. Had a lovely chickpea curry and shared a korma and some naan with an Indian beer.

  • Day 8

    12 giugno, Corea del Sud ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We got up at around 8am and thankfully the heat in Seoul is much less humid and dry! Practically no humidity so feels much more refreshing. We looked up a local brunch spot and walked through our area. As someone who loves coffee I’ve never seen so many quality coffee place in my life! Every second shop seems to be a coffee shop and they are all using the best Italian machines and import the coffee beans. Brunch was nice and we both had avocado with eggs.

There’s a lot of nice delis and sandwhich shops in our area ‘Hongdae’ and reminds me a little of leith. There is a think strip of park that goes on for 89 miles around Seoul! We walked through this park for a while which reminded me a bit of a narrower Turia and was nice to walk through with the shade of the trees. It was an old railway line before it was a park so they have kept a lot of the remnants. You can tell it’s a lot more chilled than Hong Kong so good to switch up the pace a bit.

South Korea is famous for skin care and one shop in particular is popular called Olive and Young. On our walk along the path towards the centre we passed about 5 of them and I think as I’m writing this I’ve been into about 10 with Sinéad so far as she goes nuts for the makeup and skin stuff in there. I was inside so many times I decided to just get something for myself! Really cheap and good quality apparently. The secret is they don’t use any harsh chemicals in the product which we include a lot of in that west.

For lunch we stopped off at a Focaccia place adjacent to the walking path and had a lovely sandwhich with a beer. I had honey and mortadella and Sinéad had tomatoes and pesto . The route was so juice we accidentally walked to the war museum of Korea which I was really impressed by. It was free and showed a history of Korea though the ages with lots of weapons on show and tanks and planes scattered around. I took some photos of massive statues outside the museum. By time it was 31 degrees and while not humid still hot so nice to get some aircon inside.

After the museum we took the metro back and got changed in the hotel. I had wanted to try Korean BBQ in Korea so booked a place last minute. Was amazing and they cooked it for us with some nice veg alll done on the charcoal grill that sat between us on the table!

After dinner we stumbled into a bar which was top floor of a building. In Korea , like Japan, a lot of businesses share the same building and each have a different floor (usually share the same toilets)

The bad was empty and turned out to be a whiskey bar/book shop. We both had a highball (whiskey and soda) and played chess there (I won five games 🤓)

  • Day 9

    13 giugno, Corea del Sud ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

We had a good nights sleep and walked into HongDae again for breakfast . We walked past a sort of American Diner looking place and both had a breakfast burrito which was delicious. Today wasn’t as sunny as yesterday and overcast but still about 27/28 degrees.

After breakfast and another excellent coffee (you can tell a place is good when they ask you what roast you want) we walked down HongDae street. Unlike yesterday which was calm and tranquil this street was a bit nuts with lots of noise and bright lights. It’s the student part of Seoul and there’s lots of cheap student cafes and bars here. We decided to try and win snugglys as a trend here is to attach them to your bags (everyone does it).

Everywhere in Seoul are these shops filled with about 100 different types of toys you can win by paying to grab them with claws. It looks easy but we tried 13 times (about £6 worth!) and didn’t get one, while we watched a Korean girl get it first time so must be something we are missing! I was feeling confident after my success at ocean park but failed to win anything’

After our unsuccessful attempts we decided instead of taking the metro we would walk to Gyeongbokgung Palace. I have to admit that metro isn’t nearly as good here as it was in Hong Kong and slightly confusing. Seoul is behind in terms of not allowing Apple Pay unlike Hong Kong which because of British influence is much more westernised so a different experience as we need to buy tickets every time rather than chip pinning with our phones.

The walk was long to get there and we walked through one of the universities in Seoul to get there. We did a lot of climbing and walked through a big amphitheatre . Took us about 2 hours to get there and wasn’t the most pedestrianised! At one stage we walked along a bypass ! Sinéad didn’t thank me for that but we powered on. Probably best next to get the metro.

We arrived at the palace for 2pm as we had wanted to time it with the changing of the guard which was cool to see with big drums and marching. Reminded me a little of bagpipes. Once it ended we picked up our tickets to tour the palace and then walked to get something to eat as we were hungry. Had lunch in a lovely barley noodles place and had a bowl with broth and shared some huge steamed dumplings! 🥟

After the tour of the palace we got a bus (payment didn’t work so we technically snuck on) to the cable cars as we had booked to go up north Seoul tower. Unfortunately it was a bit of a misty day now so the views at the top weren’t the best although I couldn’t resist taking a photo in the toilets of a great view from the urinal. We had a drink at the top and deliberated waiting until sunset but the rain started and we got a bit wet so decided to head back via metro.

We arrived back knackered almost 30k steps deep and walked into a cheap beer and fried chicken place in the studenty district. 50 pence for a beer, no alcohol tax here!

  • Day 10

    14 giugno, Corea del Sud ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We tried another place for breakfast this morning. We have been using AI loads for this holiday and I have to say it’s made things so much easier for everything. I have a subscription from work for Copilot (Microsoft AI chatbot) and Sinéad uses Chat GPT and we ask it to help plan our day and advise on what the best places to eat/drink are!

Another hit as this breakfast was a ‘build your own set’ breakfast and was great! After we took the metro (45 mins or so) to the suburb of Gangam (most famous for the song Gangam Style by Psy). It was much better weather today and sunny and warm. Gangam is very different to Seoul, a lot less busy and bustling but a lot of wealth with a ton of big banks and financial buildings. It’s more modern than Seoul and home to Asias biggest shopping mall. We walked from Gangam Station to the mall as it was a lovely day and stopped off for coffee on route and managed to check out a Catholic Church.

The walk was around an hour and we were welcomed by a blast of cold aircon from the largely underground shopping mall. It had everything you could possibly want and I picked up some T-shirts for work at Uniqlo and Sinéad got some more skincare stuff and trousers. There was also a big library in there and I got a shot of the massive bookshelves. We had lunch in the food court and then walked across the road there to a Buddhist temple . It was really nice and peaceful there and we did a small hike up the hill to the monastery.

On our way back down we passed by chance a small tea festival. It reminded me like something from a video game like animal crossing. They were very friendly and the stalls asked us if we’d long to try their different flavoured teas which were nice! We also passed a guy with cats on his back who had a YouTube channel!

Sinéad then wanted a photo in front of the famous Gangam style hands statue. As we walked down by the mall we noticed a gathering of people and noise by a red bull dance event. This music was good and a lot of people street dancing. We asked and apparently main event started at 7pm and this was the Korean final (winner preforms in the world finals in LA). The format was dance of between 2 contestants (16 in total) and the winners voted the crown with red or blue cards. As it was only 6 we decided to go to a rooftop bar for some views and a beer each.

The hotel (Hyatt) was very fancy and we were a bit underdressed so after 1 drink we went back down and watched some of the dance offs as the sunset. I caught some of it on video and should be above.

After about an hour we headed back by metro from Gangam to Hong Dae (our area). We stoped by a Mexican for dinner and I had some tasty burritos 🌯! After food we arrive back at the hotel to shower and get ready again. Sinéad had wanted to try the nightlife and go to one of the clubs and I reluctantly agreed! To be fair Hong Dae which is the student part is famous for its night life and the main streets were buzzing.

We tried one club at 11pm which was dead so after one drink we ventured down the Main Street until we found a place that looked busy and good. It was an RnB place and packed. You get a drink with or entry so not bad. We left after an hour as we were both knackered. We got pulled into another bar from a rep trying to get us in! When I was ordering drinks at the bar I noticed one of those digital clocks you tap to start. I saw a few guys trying to stop it on 5 seconds dead and after a few goes I managed it wangled a free drink.
