    Nothing but ocean views

April 22, 2023, North Atlantic Ocean

Though Cuba is supposedly off our starboard side. My cabin is starboard, we’re too far offshore to see land.

It’s very smooth sailing so far. Reminds me of the sailing in the North Sea last August.

    Cuba in view!

    April 22, 2023, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Have been watching the coastline of Cuba pass by through the afternoon. Coming up on the southern end and Guantanamo Bay.

Question for my followers…. When a ship calls the aft hangout spot the Sunset Bar and you’re cruising southeast such that the sunset literally hits you square in the face and you think “hell yeh”…. should it be renamed when you spend the next 12 days cruising west and NW ….. perhaps to the Sunrise Bar?Read more

    In My Defense….

    April 22, 2023, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌙 81 °F

I did sleep until 10:30a today. Then had a nap and some pool time before heading to the so-called Sunset” Bar (works for now) for HH preceding dinner. Had a nice dinner with two couples - one from Vancouver, CA and another from FL. (Most guests friendly so far), then had MDR dinner and then raced to the evening theater show. The Main Stage show tonight was Franky Valli (sp? - don’t care). Recall my comment on demographics upon boarding? Was fine, but I’m now in militant mode fighting the “HAL is for old people” sentiment. Hard to find a song from after the mid-80’s that hasn’t been muzacked on this ship. If I run into Sarah, the very enthusiastic Cruise Director in charge of Entertainment, it is going to be hard stay my ….. um, enthusiasm for some more contemporary music options. If I get get kicked off in Cartagena now you’ll know why. Did I say it’s an older crowd? I’m missing the HAL Music Walk (Rolling Stones Rock Room) already. But that may just be me.

On the plus side, I’ve won a little and lost a little - nothing that will affect the kids’ inheritance - in the casino and just learned that they serve drinks for free if you’re gambling, which is great if you don’t have the drinks package like me!

Time for bed now. One more day of weekend decompression (along with a little work to catch up from last week), then a busy week of work, port stops, and trying to avoid norovirus and Covid, LoL. (No Covid or norovirus outbreaks on this ship have been noted so far.).

    Atlantic Ocean vs Carribean Sea?

    April 23, 2023, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Seems to be some debate as to whether there is a distinct Caribbean Sea, or it should just be referred to as part of the Atlantic Ocean. I am neutral on that subject. Nonetheless, here I am somewhat in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

It’s absolutely gorgeous today with calm blue waters - not glassy but close to it - and temperate weather. It’s warm but the breeze from the ship’s movement at 18kts is like being in trade winds. Spent a little time after lunch sitting in a very quiet and shady spot on the Promenade deck doing some work emails, updating my calendar, listening to the water passing along the hull, and watching a sea bird flying around. Not a bird species I recall ever seeing before, so that’s cool.

Shic night. Awaiting a table at the MDR.

    Resistance is Futile

    April 23, 2023, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

ABBA party - sing-along party to be specific - as last event for the day. I should know better, I know, but it’s ABBA people!!!

Morning arrival in Cartagena and then have to put several hours of work in after. But for now it’ll be a little ABBA in the Sky Lounge until I can’t take it any more.

Attended the main theater nonsensical musical theater show by the ship’s production company just now. Really enjoyed it - as much for the technical production as for the singin and dancin- and thought a lot about Emma watching the show. It had a LOT going on for a ship theater (rotating floor, various floor lifts, aerial gymnastics, a stunt fall into the orchestra pit). Maybe I’ll post more on that. I shot some video but it’ll need a little editing.

    Food

    April 23, 2023, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

If you’re wondering what the food is like and what I’m enjoying, and I’m with you if you could care less….

Celebrity has this fleet-wide sushi/Asian place called Sushi on 5 (yep 5th deck). Had some edamame and a roll for lunch on embarkation day - avoiding the buffet chaos that my lifted-pinky 5-star traveler disdains (lol) - a suggestion I heard from my YouTube cruise vlogger “friends” - cost a little extra but was worth it for a peaceful lunch experience on a busy day. Very good but pedestrian compared to Sansei. 😀

Also Day 1, utilized a specialty dining package to get a ribeye for dinner at one of the other specialty restaurants called Tuscan Grill. Was very good; not better than HAL. Will get pasta next time (I get 3 visits to Tuscan Grill).

Lunch Saturday (Day 2) - the dreaded buffet called OceanView Cafe - had Indian food (no pic) - and enjoyed it.

Dinner Saturday night - the MDR, called Metropolitan Restaurant. Had a rigatoni pasta; not great; was basically lightly. Uttered noodles with some mushroom slivers.

Now Day 3 (Sunday) and I have yet to experience a breakfast on board. My cabin steward brought me an electric kettle for my room so I could make my own tea (from home), which was nice. Went to a couple educational lectures - one on the Panama Canal (fascinating) and one called Fire and Ice about tectonic plate movement; the geology lecturer was funnier than the comedian we had on Day 1, lol. Anyway, had a bbq chicken with buttermilk grits and chard (very tasty) for lunch in the MDR, and then (Chic night) a prime rib (nothing to write home about ha ha) for dinner in the MDR Sunday night.

So that catches you up on that. I won’t keep doing food posts unless there is something especially notable. Bottom line on 3 days of food - it’s generally good, a little hit and miss, but not as good as what we had on the Rotterdam. I look forward to being home for food - we generally eat better at home, though that can be hit or miss when I’m cooking I admit.

    Arrived Cartegena

    April 24, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Morning excursion into the old part of the city….

Spent about an hour getting from the Theater excursion check-in to the bus located on the pier. Organized but not well planned. I was in a line to the theater that went 2/3 the way down the ship. A lot of disgruntled line standers. But eventually we made our way on the “Best of Cartagena - Highlights” tour I signed up for. Good thing I did a guided tour as the pier was no where near the things to see, though I could have done a Hop-on-Hop-off bus and just chanced it. I think I picked well; got a lot of steps in but also had some windshield touring which was nice in the heat and humidity.

Saw the basilica of Saint Peter Claver, who is known as the slave of the slaves, or something like that. He spent his ministry serving and supporting the African slaves that were brought to South America by the Spanish just as they were by the English and Americans in North America. Interestingly, his remains are ensconced in a glass-faced case below the altar. So we were able to walk up there and look at his skull poking out from his vestments. I dropped $1 in the tray the nuns were proffering to us on the way out to assuage my heretic (this place was very Catholic) guilt.

We went by the Fortress but the tour didn’t include the hour+ time to go inside. Sorry I missed that experience - it looked pretty cool

Old City was interesting, but had a constant faint smell of rotting rubbish and at times a very strong smell of pee, which I think I narrowed down to coming from the street gutters, which despite it being very hot and dry seemed quite often to have a small stream of stagnant water in them. And then there were the street vendors selling hats, magnets, woven bags, hats, cold water/beer, dresses, hats, various forms of artwork, cigars, hats, coffee, and one local lady even walked by and tried to sell me what appeared to be a lollipop she pulled from a bag of lollipops like you’d buy at Safeway (I passed). They were pushy but not threatening and avoiding eye contact and a firm no thank you became my mode for the morning, which I wasn’t too troubled by. They’re just trying to make some money and the cruisers are the major target. That said, our guide indicated that since the government and guerrillas that had been at war for years signed the 2016 peace accord Colombia - especially Cartagena - has become quite safe and the country overall is doing really well economically. Price of gas here btw - -$2.50/gal (quite expensive for the working class locals) , but they are suffering the global inflation in various products as is much of the rest of the world.

All in all - was a great stop and I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to spend a few hours in Cartagena.
