  • Big4 Riverfront Park - Renmark

    2. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 41 °C

The BIG4 Renmark Riverfront Holiday Park is located on the mighty Murray River in the heart of the Riverland.

If we were any closer to the water, we would have been in it.
It is a lovely spot on the river, and we had the opportunity to hand-feed the local wildlife!

Although very hot (40°C to 44°C) at times, it was also very pleasant in the evenings riverside, sinking a few cold beers!

Lovely sunsets and afternoon storms made it more interesting.

  • Woolshed Falls - Beechworth

    14. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The falls are a ten-minute drive north from Beechworth in Victoria, Australia, located in the Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park.
Woolshed Falls, although not spectacular, were well worth the visit on an otherwise dull and cloudy day.

The area was once the centre of one of the richest goldfields in Australia, where up to 8,000 prospectors camped along the banks of Spring Creek, in search of their fortune; some found it, and others did not.

Over four million ounces of gold (115 tonnes or approximately 2 billion Australian dollars, 1997 prices) were found in the first 14 years after its discovery in 1852. At today's gold prices (2025), this would be a staggering $11,758,390,270.80.

  • Mount Stanley - Victoria

    14. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Mount Stanley lookout is a hidden gem that most travellers are unaware of. Follow the winding road for just ten kilometres south of Beechworth in Victoria, and you will come across the small village of Stanley.
We followed Mt Stanley Road until we reached the summit.

The narrow gravel road we travelled was in good condition, and we encountered no problems with other traffic, particularly log and gravel trucks.
The reward was a spectacular 360-degree view of the Victorian Alps and lovely wildflowers.

In 1932, a steel lookout tower was built on the summit for fire detection, one of the first built in Victoria.
The mountain has an elevation of 1050 metres, and on a clear day, the views are awesome, especially from a drone's perspective.

  • Tanswell's Commercial Hotel - Beechworth

    14. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Lunch today at Tanswell's Commercial Hotel.
This grand old country pub in Beechworth was well worth the visit.

Thomas Tanswell was the son of a convict but rose to become a successful businessman and Justice of the Peace in Beechworth.

Tanswell purchased the Commercial Hotel in April 1870 and renamed it Tanswell’s Commercial Hotel.
In 1873, he rebuilt and transformed the former humble timber pub into the grand, double-storey brick hotel.
The Tanswell family sold the hotel in 1967 after almost a century of ownership, but the name remained.

Tanswell's Commercial Hotel was heritage-listed on 9 October 1974 in the Victorian Heritage Register.

  • Mount Buffalo - Victoria

    15. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Mount Buffalo is located in Victoria's High Country, about 60km south east of Wangaratta in North East Victoria, Australia.
This was out third visit to this great park and it never fails to amaze us.

The trip was to take the 4WD up to the Horn at the summit of Mount Buffalo to retrace our journey undertaken on motorbikes in 2016, when at the time there was still snow on the ground.
After completing this, we were actually quite amazed we did this on road bikes, in particular the heavy Yamaha FJR 1300.
The highest point on Mount Buffalo is The Horn, at 1723m elevation.
The majority of the plateau is at 1300m-1500m elevation.
Mount Buffalo is an astonishingly beautiful mountain.
It has a diverse landscape and flora, ranging from bush to tall trees with ferns carpeting the ground, giving it a tropical look, to the snow gums above that are short and stocky.

The road is a windy journey used by both cars and cyclists & the view from the horn is breath-taking.
I have also shared some memories from when Phil and I were here in late December 2016.

  • Blowering Dam & Cliffs - Tumut - NSW

    20. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Famous as the site of the world water-speed record in 1978.
Blowering Dam is one of the biggest dams in NSW, at a massive 165 km², equalling 16,500 ha.
There are few things more dangerous, romantic, foolhardy, and adventurous than a speed record.

For this reason, Ken Warby's water speed record of 275.97 knots (511.10 km/h; 317.58 mph), set on Blowering Dam on 8 October 1978, still stands. Good luck to anyone wanting to better that record after 46 years!

Blowering Dam stores water released upstream for hydroelectric generation in the Snowy Mountains Scheme and for irrigation.

  • Wild Brumbies - Snowy Mountains - NSW

    21. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

During the winter, there would be snow on the ground here.
Summertime, when we visited, we were thrilled to see a mob of brumbies. There are some really amazing colours in this mob!
A brumby is a free-roaming feral horse in Australia.

Although found in many areas around the country, the best-known brumbies are found in the Australian Alps region.
Wild horses first appeared in Australia soon after colonisation, as horses escaped or were abandoned.

According to historian Eric Rolls, brumbies may have originally gotten their name from the horses that Private James Brumby abandoned in 1804 when he was transferred from New South Wales to Tasmania, or it is a rough translation of an Aboriginal word, baroomby, meaning "wild". Pitjara Indigenous Australians.

  • Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko

    22. Februar 2025 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Mount Kosciuszko is the highest peak in Australia, you can walk to the summit after taking the chairlift from the ski resort.
Mount Kosciuszko is the rounded top peak you see, and is by no means spectacular, but it is very picturesque.
It is a 13km return walk, we made it to the lookout and that was 4 km return, and that my friends was enough for this very unfit and overweight person.
