    On the road again, we are headed to Ballarat where we will be for the next 4 days. Went for a walk around the park to familiarise myself with where everything is located. Photograph some flowers to try and better my photography skills. Located the park's resident chickens, I wanted to have one for dinner but they wouldn't let me.Read more

    The day has finally arrived, we are on our way Tassie. This will be our home next 4 months, first stop will be in Smithton, Phil's childhood home. I am looking forward to exploring this beautiful Island, It has been over three years since we have been back. At present, we're killing time, as per usual we are early, while waiting I went and photographed a couple of flowers.

    I haven't updated my journal since arriving in Ballarat, we didn't do any exploring and the weather hasn't been the best, it was a nice change to just sit back and relax.    Read more

    Today we went to Trowutta, this is where Phil once lived. He showed me his childhood home, where his grandmother, uncle/aunty once lived.

    A lot of the land at Trowutta where once thriving dairy farms. Now it is used for logging trees, which is such a shame, these trees have destroyed this beautiful farmland.Read more

    Today we went for a drive to Stanley. Wonder around the town, stopped in at the wharf, then went to a cafe for morning tea.

    Drove down to the beach and while I was exploring, Phil put the drone in the air. I found some interesting-looking creatures on the beach. Phil explained one could be a sea slug, but not quite sure.Read more

    Green Point Beach

    Went to Green Point Beach today, before heading along the west coast. This is the second time we have stopped here, this is a very pretty beach with its fascinating rock formation that was created from the rugged sea and its green sea grass growing on the rocks. We spent quite a bit of time here exploring the many rock pools, examining the rock formation, watching a father and his children sliding barefoot on the sea grass before heading up the beach and looking at the many sea birds in the area.Read more

    Exploring the West Coast. We stopped in at West Point State Reserve, visited Lighthouse Beach, Bluff Hill Point and Arthur River: - The Edge of the World, with its stunning views overlooking the rocks and plenty of driftwood which made for some great photos. This is where the Arthur River meets the Southern Ocean the wild rugged wilderness, nature at its best!

    Next, we stopped at Nelson Bay River Falls, a small but very pretty cascade waterfall, we also stopped in at some small crayfishing villages, like Nelson Bay, Couta Rocks and Temma. From what I have seen of the west coast and weather conditions, these cray fishermen must have no fear and extremely high boating skills.

    Things you see, on our way out of the crayfishing village of Couta Rocks we had to go around a mother cow feeding her calf in the middle of the road.    Read more

    Sumac Lookout

    Sumac Lookout is a hidden gem. You think it is nothing special but, just a short walk to the lookout you will see an impressive view overlooking a natural forest down to the Arthur River below.

    On our way down from the lookout we stopped at Kanunnah Bridge and explored the area. Captured some interesting photos of some moss, lichen, fauna and a Phil in the wild.Read more

    Trowutta Arch

    This is the second time I have been to Trowutta Arch; the first time was in 2014 before it became a tourist attraction, and before the gravel path was built.

    Spent over an hour exploring this magnificent spectacle of nature, this place is mysterious as it was tranquil. You walk through tall Myrtles trees and tree ferns while marvelling at the different types of fungi and lichen, all the while taking in the beauty and the uniqueness of some of the trees

    Then you walk around the corner and there it is the Arch, just fascinating. Sooooo WORTH IT.

    Dip Falls and The Big Tree

    Just like the Trowutta Arch it was 2014 when we were last here and the Dip River Falls did not disappoint, this super cool and unique waterfall with amazing hexagonal column rocks was gushing with water after the recent rain, which was very impressive. Yes, there were over 200 steps down to the bottom, but very well built with handrails and a lovely board walk at the bottom. You can also see the falls from a disabled access viewing platform on the other side of bridge.

    Just a few minutes down the road near Dip Falls is The Big Tree, which is surrounded by smaller big trees and ferns, it’s a peaceful and magical place to visit, just to sit quietly and be with nature. Unfortunately, you are no longer able to get close to the tree, there is evidence that this tree is very fragile. Parks and Wildlife are not sure how much longer The Big Tree will be here, it probably will not survive another bushfire.    Read more

    Julius River Rainforest Walk

    An exquisite example of a cool temperate rainforest following part of the Julius River. The rainforest river walk is just under an hour if you take the time to observe your surroundings, it is quite and peaceful. There is lots of moss, fungus, huge man ferns and of course the lovely smell of the Leatherwood trees.

    Lake Chisholm

    Just down the road from Julius River Walk is Lake Chisholm. Lake Chisholm is one of the finest examples of a flooded sinkhole in Australia. The pure cool waters of Lake Chisholm are also home to many creatures, including the platypus. When you walk through the rainforest amongst the giant eucalypts and man ferns to the lake, it’s like coming straight out of the prehistoric Jurassic Park age. It was lovely and peaceful while you walked through it.Read more

    Today our adventure took us to Glenorchy, my sister-in-law Denise's place, Glenorchy is a suburb of Hobart. We decided to take her for a drive and ended up at Macquarie Plains which is Hops Country and Pulpit Rock lookout. Had the privilege of sighting a Wedge Tail Eagle.Read more

    Today we head to Kettering, to catch the ferry over to Bruny Island, even though Kettering is the launching point to Bruny Island, it is charming with a sheltered harbour full of yachts and fishing vessels.

    When we arrive on the Island our first stop will be The Neck Game Reserve Lookout, before heading to the furtherst part of the island and working our way back.    Read more

    The Neck Game Reserve Lookout

    The Neck is an isthmus of land connecting north and south Bruny Island. It is an important habitat for Bruny’s native wildlife, and here you’ll find the Neck Game Reserve, a boardwalk and viewing platform, these enable you to observe short-tailed shearwaters and little penguins (also known as fairy penguins). Timber stairs lead from the dunes to the Neck lookout, offering stunning 360 degree views.Read more

    Cape Bruny is home to the famous Cape Bruny Lighthouse. The lighthouse at Cape Bruny was built between 1836 and 1838 with convict labour. Worth a visit, views are spectacular with pretty fauna. There is also a little history museum.Read more

    Adventure Bay is known for its beautiful 7km long and sheltered beach, surrounded by large gum trees with views through to the soaring dolerite cliffs of Fluted Cape. There are many things to do in Adventure Bay, such as scenic boat cruises, watersports, fishing, bushwalking and visiting the delicious raspberry farm.

    At one point there was coal mining in Adventure Bay from 1876 to 1981. Coal seams can still be seen in the water and on the cliffs near Coal Point.    Read more

    Bruny Island Food Trail

    The Honey Pot have over about 1000 hives which they move year-round to follow the blossoming flower trail so their bees can collect a variety of nectar from different floral sources. They take their bees to Lake Pedder, to Bruny Island and to the Huon and Derwent Valleys, where they collect Leatherwood and Bush, Prickly Box, and Manuka Honey.

    Bruny Island Food Trail

    Get Shucked, a locally owned and operated oyster farm and bar.

    Get Shucked buys oysters that are about 40mm long from Tasmanian nursery farms, and then uses the pristine waters of the D’Entrecasteaux channel to fatten them into 70mm+ nuggets of briny meat, ready for the table! The oysters are suspended from long float lines in trays and filter nutrients from the water 24 hours a day until they’re ready to be harvested.
    The process takes roughly 6-12 months and the end product is a full-bodied, sweet-flavoured, Pacific oyster.

    Mount Wellington

    We ended our day with a visit to Mt Wellington. The weather was lovely, but by the time we got up to the top of the mountain it was very cold and cloudy – it still had traces of snow. There is a great indoor viewing platform and numerous walks you can do. The sheer height of Mount Wellington and the view over the Greater Hobart Region was still stunning, to say the least.Read more

    Seven Mile Beach

    Spent the afternoon in Stanly today. Stopped in at Hursey Seafoods and bought fish and chips for dinner. We had dinner by the sea with the seagulls. OMG they were the best fish and chips Phil and I had for a while. After our visit to Stanley we went for a drive on Seven Mile Beach and watched the sunset, it was such a great day.

    What a beautiful morning in Smithton. Went for a drive to Rocky Cape National Park. We haven't done much exploring since our trip to Hobart and Bruny Island. Today we visited Burgess Cove, Rocky Cape Light House, stopped at Boat Harbour and Sisters beach to have a look, spotted some Wooly Bulls before heading back to Smithton. Didn't wander very far or do any hiking today, we weren't equipped with the proper gear, but we will be back, there are a few trails and places we want to explore.Read more

    Day Trip to Stanley

    Today Phil and I went on a day trip to Stanley. Stopped at Stanley wharf to have a look, went for a walk along the beach, stumbled over volcanic rock and igneous rock which is lava that has hardened, and explored the many rock pools. Lunch was a seafood basket from Hursey Seafoods, which we ate in the park, once again surrounded by seagulls.

    Wild West Coast

    Today we went exploring the Wild West Coast. The Western Explorer Highway isn’t the fastest way to get around the coast but it is the most interesting. Starting at Smithton and driving along through dense forest and button grass plains through the Tarkine Wilderness. Stopping at places like Donaldson River, Corinna to catch the ferry across the Pieman River, Reece Dam and Hellyer Gorge. At times stopping to put the drone in the air, we even saved an echidna from getting hit in the middle of the road. This is part of Tasmania that a lot of people don't explore, it was the prefect day.Read more

    Went for a drive this afternoon and stopped a Stanley Wharf, The Brown Dog for a strawberry milkshake before heading to Seven Mile Beach. While we were driving on the beach captured this beauty on video hunting for prey along the sand dunes, it was a spectacular sight.Read more
