  • Day 33: long day on the ripio

    9 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The roads were especially bad today. Just wahsboards and loose gravel all the time. In Puerto Rio Trancilo we asked for the campsite. But since they were asking 5000 pesos (7 euro) per person we decided to cycle a bit further. A bit became 35 km and after almost 12 hours on the bike we found a place to camp near a lake with a thousand frogs. Atleast thats how it sounded. Since it was already late when we arived it was dark when we finished diner. So it was time for some stargazing before bedtime.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 34: Trucks and dust.

    10 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Today was suposed to be a easy day. We still had 2 more days before we could take a restday in Coyaiqe. So just 60 km easy going was the idea. But there is nothing easy about doing 60 km on the Carratera Austral. Bad roads and a lot of dust from the trucks racing down the road made it hard. But we stopped at 4 to relax a bit and got an early dinner. Because tomorrow is gonna be another hard day.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 35: Road construction ahead.

    11 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today is the day of the biggest climb of the Carratera Austral. But the first 35 km was road constructions. Every couple kms we had to stop and wait for construction machines or debris to be cleared. The climb was nice just 800m of climbing with around 7%. We had some trouble finding a spot to camp so after 98km we found a village and the police pointed out a place to camp next to the river. The leggs are tired the knees and back hurt. So we are ready for a rest day.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 36: Made it to town before the rain

    12 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Today we only had to do 42 km. But it being the 9th day in a row of cycling the leggs were tired. Just after setting up the tent the rain started. Shocked by the amount of choice we spend 2 hours to decide what to buy in the supermarket. Found a 2 liter carton of our favorite cheap vino so we celebrate a bit tonight and the next two days are gonna be restdays.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 40: First rainday.

    16 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

This morning at 7:30, just when we wanted to get up, it started raining. and it hasn't stoped since. So it was a great day to test the rain pants. after just 10 km of ripio we found the paved road again wich made it easy to do the planed 70 km. We want to catch the ferry at Tuesday morning in Chaiten. 5 more days of 60 km and 1 spare day. Hopefully it will be dryer tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 41:Fjords and potholes

    17 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Waking up with a blue sky. really happy that it wasn't raining. But with 7°C it was cold as well. heavely clothed we set out to find the ripio again. Today we had to do one bigger climb to 500m and a lot of ups and downs. being happy with the weather we made good progress and even though the ripio was really bad with a lot of potholes we made 100 km. We found a campsite with an hot shower so the leggs can rest.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 42: Small rainday

    18 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Waking up with rain pouring from the sky we decided to take it easy in the morning. At 12 it looked like it would clear so we packed the tent and set of. Not even 5 km from the campsite and it started again. The good thing is that the potholes are more visible in the rain. But the ripio is all mud and slippery. Doing a "small" day, as our french friends put it, we stopped after doing only 46 km.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 43: Change of plans and breakdown

    19 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Yesterday evening we decided to change the plans for the comming days. Today we left the Carratera Austral and got in one of the side roads to a small port town to try to get a ferry. it was the first time we set a deadline for ourselfs. 75 km in one day on the ripio. As soon as we tried to leave Nino had a flat tire. The replacement tire that he used wasn't patched properly. So almost a hour later than planned we left. Just 2 km out of town my shoe cleat came loose making it impossible to get my shoe from my pedal. 5 km later i lost a part from the fuel bottle. Forcing me to caring it on top. And finally afyer 10 km my rear rack came loose. One of the bolts just broke. Leaving halve the bolt in my frame making it impossible to replace. Half an hour of emergency repairs made the bike ridable again. having spend half the day repairing the bike we set of to the town. we made up lost time by racing the ripio. And made it to the town with an average of 15 kmh. wich is really fast on the ripio. The tickets for the ferry where sold out. but we are gonna try to make it on the ferry tomorow anyway.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 44: Stranded because of Viento.

    20 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Today we were suposed to get the boat. in the morning it was raining a lot and after checking with the carabenieros we found out the boat was delayed for 3 hours. But the good thing was we found actual tickets for the boat. Packing our stuff really wet we set out to find bread. On our way back we met one of the officers and he invited him in their house for tea. 3 hours of spannish lessons later still no boat. We decided to have lunch and dry the tent at the port incase the ferry showed up.But at 3 still no ferry. We asked someone and he told us that the boat is comming tomorow in the afternoon. So we the french couple from Ushuaia and a German guy are stranded here. We decided to stay in the waiting room/container tonight. luckely we traded some euro coins for 2 Liters of wine. So we have something to do tonight.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 45: Testing our sealeggs.

    21 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Yesterday at 22:00 the ferry showed up out of nowhere. so we quickly got our stuff and got on. Because we didn't have a ticket all the way to Chiloë we didn't have a real seat. So we tried to get some sleep on the floor of the restaurant. As soon as the ship hits the golf the waves start to get higher. Things fall off tabels and chairs start moving. It was the start of a night without much sleep. After 12 hours we made it to Chiloë and we could start our sunday with about 1 hour of sleep. There was not much to do in Quellon so we got some gas and food and started a normal day. We had 2 days to make it to Castro 90 km away. The first campsite we asked wanted us to pay 12.000 pesos (18 euro) so we went to another for 8.000. still alot but we need a good night sleep.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 46: No camping Castro.

    22 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Only 45 km to castro. Just before 12 we arived in Castro for lunch. But at the tourist office they told us that the closest campsite was 4 km away. Castro is a city we really wanted to visit so we tried the hostels. As always we were offered special prices for rooms. But we decided to go to the campsite either way. Still tired from the boat ride we chilled at the campsite did some laundry and gathered apples for dessert. We got some mussels from a couple of chileans we met so that made it a three course menu. Tomorow it is time to visit castro and find some information of the national park.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 48: Where is the entrance?

    24 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Yesterday we explored Castro. This colorful town with a busy fishmarket and a lot of eateries was fun to see. Nino lost his bank card to an ATM. He had to come back today to get it back. We were planning on going to the national park. A short 50 km ride away we found a campsite and tried to get some information. But trying in our best spannish we couldn't get any information on the start off the hike. So we drove around on our bike on the beach for a while. seeing the Passific for the first time this trip.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 51: going north again.

    27 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Setting out from the Passific coast we had to do 50 km that we pedaled already from Castro. The rain and 13°C made it a cold firtst 50 km. But upon arival in castro the sun broke trough the clouds and the rain was gone. after getting some supplies at our favorite supermarket, the Unimarc, we set off for some fresh kilometers. Having followed the pan-American highway for most of Chiloë we decided to take the smaller roads. We found a great road on the map. Small, a lot of bends, and near the coast. It turned out to be a gravelroad with climbs of more than 20%. A lot of pushing, jokes and cursing were involved. Having slept in a bed the last 2 nights we didn't want to pay to sleep. But there were no good wildcamping spots. So we ended up next to a bridge just out of sight of the road. Not the best or most beautiful place, but good enough. Tomorow we set out for mainland Chile again.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 52: Fighting off dogs on Chiloë

    28 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Again the choice ripio or asphalt. Like always we chose the ripio. The whole day was up and down on the bad gravel roads of Chiloë. With slopes of more than 20% it was tough. But a lot of fun as well. Taking the backroads instead of the Pan-Am highway, we came trough a lot of smalls Chiloëan towns. a good way to see the everyday chilean rural life. The downside of the small towns was the dogs. Driving trough a town all the dogs started barking. Some of them even started running after us, and not in a nice playfull way, We've learned that screaming at a dog scares them off most off the time. But sometimes we had to slowdown or even stop and trow rocks before the dogs stoped treathening to bite our legs. But we made it to mainland Chile again in one piece. Tomorow we ride to Puerto mont. To restock before going north again.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 53: Deadend and blackberries.

    29 Februari 2016, Chili ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Only 60 km to Puerto Montt. That was the idea atleast. After 10 km on a small dirt road we were suprised to see that the road was blocked bij a fence. We climbed over the fence to look of there was a way to get around. But the owner told us, in really fast spannish, that there would be a road to the right that would get us to Puerto Montt. Again we found a fence that blocked the road. This time we were told that we had to circel back to the main road. So 25 extra kilometers. But a quick stop to pick a lot of blackberries made up for it. After a long day in the saddle we made it to Puerto Montt. We found a campsite for the first night. But tomorrow we hope to find a cheap hostel.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 54: Changeable isn't so changeable

    1 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We moved to a hostel today just to find wifi to change our ticket. It had to be changed because KLM changed it in the first place. But somehow 32 hours and 4 international phone calls later the flight still isn't changed. But on the upside we met the swiss family again. The couple is traveling with their 3 year old son for more than a year now. And the happy little guy seemed to enjoy it a lot. It was fun to exchange experiences and stories. They even invited us to visit whenever we cycle in Switzerland. And we had a good laugh in the local bike shop. Nino's wheel had to be straightened. And in the mean time the owner inspected my bike and showed me pictures of him carrying all the stuff for his girlfriend on their bike trip. After aproving our bikes and calculating our daily distances they assured ass to come back if we had any trouble.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 55: Nino's Birthday.

    3 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Nino's birthday. So we began the day with a massive birthday breakfast. Then it was time to pack the bags and leave. But the lock around the bikes wouldn't open whatever we tried. So we caried our bikes locked together with blocked wheels to the bikeshop. We made good friends there so they cut the lock for us. Lucky it happend here and not in the desert. Doing only 20 km to Puerto Varas yo stay in cellphone and wifi range to change our tickets. Hopefully we will be able to do more tomorow. At this pace it is going to be far to Colombia.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 61: Fixed Nino's knee.

    9 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

It was time to move north again. Nino somehow managed to injure his knee on our way to Puerto Montt. 2 days of rest and 2 slow days on the bike didn't do any good. So we took another 4 days of rest in Puerto Octay, where literally nothing happens. But with ninos knee feeling better we set of on an easy day with only 450 m of climbing in 65 km. Wasn't a really eventfull day but we could camp near a farm so that gave us a much needed free place to sleep. Tomorow is gonna be another easy day 65 more km with even less climbing. After that it is probably onto the mountains. So lets hope Nino's knee can handle it. Ohh and almost forgot, We've finally managed to get our flight changed. So we can keep on cycling for a bit more.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 62: Blackberries and pinaple

    10 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Just when we finished our daily oatmeal breakfast we got a visit from the farmers wife. She gave us fresh bread and blackberry jam for breakfast. So polite as we where we ate our seccond breakfast before getting on the road. We started with 30 km bad ripio. So progress was slow. But when we hit the asfalt we pedaled the other 40 km away easy. We found a good campingspot with our private beach. So after a swim in the lake we had dinner with pineapple desert. Hopefully nobody will come to scare us away.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 63: First day in the wilderness.

    11 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Before the lunch we pedaled 50 uneventful kilometers away. Weather was good, road was perfect and the sun was shining. After the lunch we caught up with the road construction amd got 15 km of really bad ripio. But we knew this was only the beginning. Soon we got off the main road on a small farmers road. Wich soon became a double and then a singletrack trough heavy vegetation. We chose this toad a long time ago and have been looking forward to it since. a long time ago there was a road in this valley. But when te bridge collapsed nobody felt like rebuilding it. So the gauchos maintain a small horsetrail trough the valley. But it is used only sparsely. So we push and pull our bikes along this trail and have the time of our live. But it is tough.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 64: Couldn't handle the river

    12 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

It was 3 degrees when we woke up this morning. We really didn't look forward to the upcomming rivercrossing. But reluctantly we packed our stuff and set out. 20 min later we arived at the crossing. It was way wider than the other crossing. But armed with our drybags started to cross. 1/4th of the way in, we were in till our knees and the current was really strong. There was no way we were gonna cross the 4 times necessary to get all our stuff and bikes to the other side. After a seccond try we decided to turn around and head back. It means almost 150 more km but at least we tried to do it the hard way. We treated ourselfs with 1 kilo of cookies to treat the feeling of defeat.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 65: Monsterday

    13 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

With the morale being quite low after our defeat at the river we set out for Pucon. Figuring it would take 3 days to get there. But we started strong and did the planned 70 km before 2 o'clock. So we decided to cycle to the next town there would probably a shop and place to sleep along the way. And there wasn't. So now we did 130 km and have only 70 more to go to Pucon. We found a place next to the road. Not the nicest place we've had. But it is free and sheltered from the road. So on to Pucon tomorow!Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 66: First shower in a week.

    14 Maret 2016, Chili ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Last night we had 2 dogs having a bark batle just outside out tent. We had to use our pans and a couple of stones to scare them away to get some sleep. Waking up in the wet and cold we set out for Pucon, for our well earned restdays. We got it all good/bad asphalt, ripio and quite and really busy roads. But we made it to Pucon. Took our first shower in almost a week. We even met Stephan and Daniëla again. We had a good time catching up. And a french couple from the casa the ciclista came to say hi as well. So we had a fun day and are ready for some restBaca selengkapnya
