      Gilberts of Griffith

      20. huhtikuuta 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      Visit with Pat and Reg.

We bought a new battery from NRMA who delivered and installed just before we left the Central Coast. The very first start, the car cranked a little slowly. The NRMA guy said “that doesn’t sound very good, you better go to an auto electrician and find out what’s wrong with your car”. Well that’s a pain in the ass. Don’t want issues on the road, so I better get it checked. Subsequent stars were intermittently OK. It wasn’t until Griffith that we had the chance to visit an electrician (a few places on the coast were suggesting 3 week wait).
$100 later the test comes back “faulty battery” So, I call the NRMA who promptly arrive and test the battery and say “it’s OK”, with his meters he shows the battery levels dropping rapidly after the car is turned off. “There is something drawing current, you better get it checked by an auto electrician. Hmmm. The guy I had been to this morning had shut shop because he was going to a go-carting event. So I found another who checked it out. They couldn’t find any current draw and the battery tested OK. I’m a little agitated by this stage. No current loss and battery OK. I don’t think so, so I very patiently explain this to the electrician who had another look. Finds a dead cell in the battery, agrees to demonstrate to NRMA who now agrees that the battery is faulty and replace it.
Then follows a 4 week discussion with NRMA Customer Relations to refund the $210 of Auto Electrician charges. All done now.

      Timeout! Click go the shears..

      1. maaliskuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

A pause in our our wiggly travel path.
Our original plan was to travel from Kalgoorlie on the Great Central Road through The Great Victorian and The Gibson Desert up to Uluṟu.
      Short detour Required.
Regina’s Parents Reg and Pat need a visit and Zoe needed her Daddy to be at her 30th Birthday party. We made this decision while working in the Motel at Dynamite Bay, which with detours was about 4,100 kilometres away. It needed to be done so off we went. Because we intended to surprise Zoe, we had to go dark on our comms, so if you thought we had fallen into the Southern Ocean we’ll apologise for that. From Esperance in WA we sneaked our way through SA, briefly into Victoria, and then onto the rough roads of NSW.
The surprise for Zoe was successful and complete in Wagga Wagga. Regina parachuted into Griffith, Ian did a flying visit to a very wet Central Coast and returns to Griffith with the rain in tow, before we reunite with our Van in Wagga Wagga.
We are now a travelling trio. Ian’s mum Mary joined our circus and will be part of the troupe until Broken Hill. We all have our fingers crossed that the rain doesn’t follow us into the desert where we will free camp and see the sights.
Out of Griffith on Ellis Park station (near Bunyan) we stopped in to watch Regina’s brother Lance do a spot of shearing.

Goodbye green Victoria - hello brown NSW

      21. elokuuta 2018, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

I was so tired last night that I was asleep around 9pm, but as usual I woke up a number of times throughout the night. We are still getting used to the diesel heating and even on low we both eventually got too hot.

It was lovely to open the door in the morning and enjoy the view of the flowing Goulburn river, rich bird life and golden leaves of the many surrounding trees.

We left around 10 and headed past the diverse fruit growing district of greater Shepparton and stopped at The Big Strawberry in Koonoomoo to taste some strawberry wine and other strawberry delights. A quick sandwich and coffee in the warmth of the caravan and we finally crossed the Murray river at Tocumwal and soon noticed, as we passed through Finley, Jerilderie, Coleambally and Darlington Point how brown and dry the landscape had become. The overhanging grey cloud puffs made for a dramatic, if not foreboding backdrop.

Still, we enjoyed the drive, grateful that we’d finally joined the 21st century and created a family Spotify account so we had plenty of music to keep us occupied. Of course, we don’t really appreciate each other’s taste in music, so perhaps head phones may come in handy in future!

We pulled up in the large town of Griffith before 5pm and headed for the free camp in the centre of town, along the main canal. We were treated to the most spectacular deep pink sunset before retiring inside for the night in the warmth of our little home on wheels.

Before we head inside for a simple pasta and some hot chocolate and a slice of yummy cake here are some fun and weird facts about strawberries for today!

      1. Did you know that strawberries are the only fruit that wear their seeds on the outside?

      2. Strawberries are also technically not a berry - again because their seeds are on the outside.

      3. Finally, strawberries are part of the rose family...which is kind of weird!

      Night night xx

      Griffith

      24. toukokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

We arrived in Griffith from Sydney via a quick look at some very attractive buildings in Leeton, an hour or so up the road.

Griffith appears to be a most prosperous and friendly town, with some unique history, and we enjoyed a day wandering around under a cloudless blue sky, taking in some fascinating sights.

From the Visitor Centre, with an Australian Navy aeroplane perched inexplicably out the front and a clever memorial incorporating a Dethridge Wheel (used for measuring water allocations), we walked up and down the very impressive Banna Street and navigated Walter Burley Griffin’s radial street design to the City Park with the Main Canal flowing slowly through it.

Then it was off up what seemed to be the only hill in the district for a look at the Hermit’s Cave, where in 1920-something Valerio Ricetti made his home in the overhangs and crevices, closed in by dry-stone walls. We spent an hour or so enjoying the sunshine and stumbling up and down the hill looking at the various structures, all amazingly put together from rocks moved solely by him and largely under cover of darkness.

Poor Valerio was a great stone-mover but a bit unlucky, having been jilted by the barmaid he loved, left his wallet in a brothel and then interred during the Second World War as a suspected spy. He also lived on the hill under the impression that he was the only Italian in the area, a short wander from Griffith where half the population have Italian heritage.

Our last stop was the Griffith Pioneer Museum, an impressive collection of old buildings and memorabilia gathered from the surrounding area. Australia is a bit full of such outdoor museums, but this one was made interesting due to the particular history of the area, with the development of the M.I.A. and the Italian heritage of the people (not to mention the winemaking) strongly emphasised.

Speaking of wine, we didn’t taste a single drop, although this will definitely not be the case for the rest of the trip!

Upon leaving Hay this morning there wasn’t a lot of people around, probably because it’s a small town 🤣 but we also got the tumble weed across the road 😳

Today saw us land in Griffith. A very horticultural town surrounded by orchards and vines and I am talking about lots & lots & lots of them. We had a wander through the Main Street and checked Mural Lane.Lue lisää

We left Melbourne and headed to Young for cherries. Me, Emer, Chiara, Venus and Brandon.
As we drove out of Melbourne in a car crammed with out life, Joanne, the woman from the agency text to say there was no work in Young for at least another week 😣 I called the hotline and now we're in Griffith. We've been told the cherry season is the worst it's been in ten years!

We found a campsite called showground and have paid to stay a week and hold out for the cherries. I'm hoping we earn some money because I've booked tickets to earthcore and I need a car!!!

There are a group of Malaysians living here who are so friendly. They invited us into their shallay to eat with them. We sat on the floor while they watched us with huge smiles eat their mackerel curry with rice. They bought us a spoon each but I tried eating with my hands like they were. It's difficult though. Then they gave us a sweet coffee. One of the guys Kei said he wants to work very for 1 year then go home, get married and start a food truck business.

Stop at Darlington point on the Murrumbidgee river for a night. Had a lovely drive here from Condobolin a flat drive starting with huge grain farms and ending with the grape capital of NSW at Griffith. Griffith is all under irrigation so is as green as. The Murrumbidgee is just another upside down river although quite largeLue lisää
