    Dreamworld, Gold Coast

    November 4, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Back to Tweeds Head South - whales!

    October 26, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

More Motorhomes have appeared on gumtree and Michael in Tweed Heads thinks he has the one that will be ideal for us .... well at least he communicates.

It appears that, in Australia, the highways department keep the weekends for doing roadworks. As we approached the main road we could see the almost stationery traffic. It gave us an opportunity to people spot in different vehicles plus Bun taking some artistic pictures of chrome wheels and the reflections of us as we went by.

The motorhome is a 1995 Mazda with a Winnebago body. 270,000kms with 4 litre diesel engine. Inside it looks a bit tired, but really well maintained and looked after. It feels wider and more airy than other we have sat in. The configuration will allow the bed to be a bed at all times and not have to put it away during the day. This may be the one.

While we expected to pay the cost of the van, plus insurance etc, no one had mentioned stamp duty. This is set as a percentage of the price determined by the state and based upon vehicle weight, size etc. Fortunately Queensland is one of the cheaper states.

The big blow was being told that it will take up to 2 weeks to prepare. All vehicles have to go through a test prior to sale to ensure that they are roadworthy. The test certificate cannot be older than 14 days so no one puts the vehicle through the test until a buyer is found. Any work required then has to be factored in .... not what we had hoped for, but let’s see what work is required.

We took the van for a test drive and it moves. Sorted.

On the way back to Brisbane we stopped off for some fish and chips (without the chips) for lunch. Met the pelican and seagulls, all of whom were well behaved and didn’t steal anything.

Drove back along the coast road through the Gold Coast on to Surfers Paradise where we stopped for coffee. Out of the window, several hundred yards from the beach, we saw a whale flipping it’s tail about. Not easy to photograph but wonderful to see. We weren’t expecting that and never really expected to see a whale from shore.

After that we rejoined the motorway. I managed to get the RWC England vs NZ on my iPad and then saw the end of it once home 😀, what a joy to watch.

    Verwandtschaftsbesuch

    February 21, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Read more

    Dreamworld & Whitewater World!

    May 12, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    Day 6 - #Thatchersontour - Gold Coast

    December 22, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We were out of the apartment and on our way to the coach station just after 6am. To give the Thatcher's the full travellers experience, we loaded ourselves up with all our luggage and made the 15 minute journey to the station on foot. Whilst we are sad to say goodbye to Melbourne for the final time, everyone is looking forward to some beach time on the Gold Coast.

We arrived at the airport nice and early so had plenty of time for some brekkie and a quick massage in the massage chairs. We were also offered an emergency exit seat each for no extra charge. Bonza! I have never had the luxury of extra leg room on a plane and it was amazing! If we can somehow wangle that on our flight back to the UK I will be very happy.

After touching down in Coolangatta airport, we picked up our luggage and the hire car and headed over to the New South Wales / Queensland border for the obligatory tourist pics before heading to our accommodation.

We are staying in a resort called Sanctuary Cove and the villa is amazing. We have a pool and 2 shiny golf carts to cruise around in which is very exciting. Mandy and Kevin's room is absolutely enormous, with a luxurious ensuite and walk in wardrobe. Just down the road we spotted a shopping centre with a supermarket and some restaurants, so after unloading our luggage we headed out for some lunch and to do a big supermarket shop for the week.

By the time we got back is was gone 4pm so we decided to give the beach a miss until tomorrow and instead us kiddlywinks took the golf buggies out for a spin. The resort is completely kitted out for buggies and they have their own lane on the side of the road and everything. Whilst we were exploring we happened across a small field completely full of kangaroos which was cool especially for Tom and Lucy who haven't really seen any kangaroos yet. We also made our way down to the Sanctuary Cove Marina which is full of lots of luxury yachts and very posh shops, including a theatre and a golf buggy shop. You don't actually ever need to leave the resort, it's crazy. A dramatic contrast to our usual traveller digs.

    Day 9 - #Thatchersontour - Gold Coast

    December 25, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

It's Christmaaaaaaaasssss! And no one is feeling Christmassy at all!

We woke to glorious sunshine pouring in the window for what is set to be a scorcher of a day! Mandy bought us all Christmas t-shirts to help get us in the Christmas spirit so we all donned those for breakfast. After breakfast we headed to the beach for a Christmas swim in the sea. We didn't expect it to be very busy but turns out that lots of Aussies go to the beach for Christmas Day! There were loads of families with gazebos set up, tables, chairs, BBQ's and eskies. It was so surreal to be in the lovely warm ocean on Christmas Day! It was so nice though that we stayed in the sea until our hands were wrinkly before heading back to Sanctuary Cove.

Back at our villa, we tucked into our body weight in cheese and biscuits before a relaxing afternoon in the pool. We decided against the traditional British turkey Christmas dinner and instead did as the Aussies do and had a BBQ! Unfortunately there were no shrimp on the barbie (as we weren't sure whether they had gone off and didn't want to risk food poisoning) however we did tuck into some delicious steak, burgers and sausages and ate them outside.

In the evening, we FaceTimed the fam. It felt strange that our Christmas was nearly over and everyone's back at home was just beginning! We have both thoroughly enjoyed our first Aussie Christmas and it was made all the more special that the Thatcher clan could join us too!

    Sightseeing

    February 22, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Read more

    Australian Outback Spectacular

    November 3 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

What a great night. We weren't sure what to expect. The food was good and the show amazing. Not only a great story of life in the outback but also spectacular horsemanship. The lighting was magnificent in parts you really thought the was a river flowing and rain was falling. A must see if you are ever in the area.Read more

    WhiteWater World!

    March 7 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We're sliding it up at WhiteWater World today! Absolutely loving that there's hardly anyone here and we are barely having to wait to go on any slides. Temperature is awesome as well, not too hot! The slides are all fantastic here, having a blast. Heading into dreamworld for lunch, and gotta say, Dreamworld is looking very sad these days. Lots of construction, not much going on. Also getting really run down. Not many pics today as we are keeping the phones in lockers and enjoying the water fun!Read more
