      Hervey Bay, QLD

      February 20, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Dick & I have a pet friendly cabin here at the Sunlodge Caravan Park in Hervey Bay. And it seems everyone who stays here, has a dog. Perhaps there aren't too many dog friendly places in Hervey Bay.

You have to give the dog's breed when you book, I think they're strict on not having unfriendly breeds staying. So Dick has become a 'black lab'. Which is probably the only breed he isn't, but the breed he most looks like. I'd be there all day listing Dick's heritage, otherwise.

So when I arrived, I was surprised when they told me there were lots of 'black labs' staying, and some next door to us. Especially when an impressive pedigree Rottweiler stalked out to meet us. Seems I'm not the only one who is telling porky pies about their dog's breed.

The cabin is great, overlooks the beach, is huge, has everything in it you need, and the aircon is fierce, so I'm happy. Queensland summers are not for me. We're in the orange cabin in the photo.

I must learn how to sleep in strange spaces. Hypervigilance wakes me every hour, and that makes me grumpy.

What also made me grumpy, was that I was given chocolate fruity sweets a few days ago (thanks Mick) and was nibbling on them in bed last night. One must have escaped unnoticed, and I woke up to chocolate all over the sheets. For a brief moment, I thought I'd had a terrible accident and somehow slept right through it. I am hoping the park has a laundry or I have some serious explaining to do.

Dick and I were up at 5am, so went for a stroll along the esplanade. We stayed in the park this time, as there are sharp rocks all the way into the sea and I ruined a flip flop (thong) when we went swimming yesterday. We meandered down to the boat ramp where we saw a seal, wallowing about in the shallow water.

Dick was more interested in a stick he found, which looks like it used to be the end of someone's polished walking stick. I'm now keeping my eyes peeled for an old man, missing his walking stick.

Dick's carried it all the way back to the cabin, but I won't let him chew it inside, so he's staring at it longingly from his bed.

We just need to get some groceries and shower stuff today (as I left all my shower things in Sue's shower block!) nothing else planned. The action starts tomorrow when we pick up a new bike and a new caravan.

      Hervey Bay

      February 27, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A travelling day, and what a day it turned out to be. Queensland's roads were in chaos due to the incessant rain, flash flooding, general flooding and road damage. RACQ advised that 800 road closures were in place in the surrounding area which made our proposed trip difficult. Jamie advised us that 1.4metres of rain had fallen on Brisbane and local area was flooding, although his house being high was not in peril.
A review of the RACQ web site indicated that a route was available for us to get to Rainbow Beach although a couple of major questions were in play - conditions at Gympie and Maryborough where extensive road closures were in place.
We made a route plan that seemed possible and reviewed it along our way, Apparently our proposed route would take us 4.5 hours to Rainbow Beach.
All went very well until we got to Gayndah where we attempted to refuel with diesel but all the filling stations were out of diesel so we travelled on to Ban Ban Springs where we were able to refuel at the point our route plan would take us off towards Biggenden. Alas road signs advised us that this route was closed so we had to detour back toward Gayndah to take an unsealed road (in part) on a 150k detour - this being the only route guaranteed to get us to the Bruce Highway.
We decided then that we should abandon our proposal to get to Rainbow, instead opting to travel to Hervey Bay which is one of the places we were going to visit later in our trip. After six hours behind the wheel Karen pulled us into the Big 4 site just prior to the reception office closing for the day. Thank goodness we had some wine and beer in the fridge.
It stopped raining in Brisbane overnight apparently.

Fish, Feeding Turtles & More Beaches

      November 15, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

This morning I went to Reef World, while Gadi went for a walk on the beach with Cadbury. It is a small and old aquarium, established back in 1979, however it retains a personal warmth that you don’t get in new, wow factor tourist attractions.

All the tanks are completely natural and have sand filtered sea water and natural sunlight. It made it very easy to take photos of the large fish, sharks and stingrays and the smaller fish in separate, smaller tanks. I really enjoyed to see so many different coloured fish, many of which I’d never seen before.

I timed it to be there for the turtle feeding, which was in an open air tank right on the ocean front. We were all given long pieces of lettuce and shown how to dangle it right in front of the turtles in the water so they can see and reach it. I was awkwardly holding my phone in one hand to take photos and trying to wave the lettuce in front of the turtle - and trying to watch and enjoy the experience at the same time! I also got to pat the turtles and feel their shiny, slightly slimy shells and their soft, wrinkly skin on their necks.

I picked up Gadi and Cadbury a few suburbs away and we went for a drive around the shore, checking out the wet park for littlies and several of the beaches, each with the same insanely blue-green water that surrounds all of Hervey Bay. We eventually chose a sheltered picnic table to eat a picnic lunch before heading beck to our caravan for a rest and a look through some of the maps to try to plan the next leg of our journey, which will be inland.

Gadi went for a swim in the caravan park pool and I did a load of washing in our little washing machine and chatted to some of the kids who live in the park who came to play with Cadbury, bringing their labradoodle with them!

We thought about going out for dinner but decided to stay in and watch the final of the bachelorette (despite the fact we haven’t been watching the series). So we whipped up some satay chicken with some rice and veggies and spent the next hour or two bagging out the stupid choices these people make on these stupid shows.

I’m glad I have enough data to pick something occasionally to watch on my phone on Netflix!

Night night from Hervey Bay xx
