      Trip restart

      February 26, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We woke up to rain hitting our van. We took showers, and had breakfast in the common kitchen area, which wasn't full of pensioners this time. At 10:30 we had to leave the campsite, so that's what we did but all we then did was park immediately next to the street. We hadn't slept too well and we were increasingly unhappy with the van and worried about our health. With the windows closed in the night, we could just smell the mold. We also did some further inspection on the vehicle and found mold also on the ceiling and in the mattress. So we concluded quite quickly that we didn't want to continue in it. We called customer service and asked for our options. They proposed we could buy anti mold spray and new mattresses and declare all the costs for it. But we figured that would mean we'd spend a lot of time and effort and still not be comfortable in this van as the chronical issue would still remain. The better option seemed to be returning our vehicle to Melbourne to exchange it for a new one. We negotiated that we'd be compensated for 2 rental days and the fuel costs.

By now it was 11:45 and we needed to make it back to Melbourne before 16:00. So we drove away immediately and after a few driver swap stops and a short lunch break, we arrived at 15:30. Halfway back we received a mail from Travellers Autobarn confirming the compensation. It took us a bit by surprise as they only wanted to refund the daily rental rate but not the daily insurance rate (which costs just as much). They also only wanted to compensate whatever was missing in the fuel tank but not what we had fueled the day before. Nonetheless, when we arrived, they were very sorry, agreed with the moldy state of the vehicle and swapped it for a newer slightly bigger van. So that was very nice. This time we had airbags, a central locking system, electric mirror adjustments, etc. Most importantly, it wasn't full of mold. We moved all our stuff and drove off again. This time a lot happier, we quickly realised that this had been the right call.

We had decided to go to the Grampions now as we didn't know if our time was gonna be enough to see those and the Great Ocean Road again. 2 hours later we arrived in Beaufort where we decided to spend the night. They call themselves an 'RV friendly town', there were no signs disallowing us, so we parked next to a small park and public toilet building. We cooked some pasta and ate it outside on our camping chairs. When it got dark we went into our van. It has a very long bed (probably about 2.3m) and felt very comfortable and this time we weren't disgusted by touching the surroundings.

      Landsborough

      June 27, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We tend to stay places for 3 nights and we stayed 4 in Landsborough.

While in the Landsborough region we went to Beaufort, St Arnaud and Ararat.
We love to investigate little towns and Beaufort was beautiful as we drove through it. It has a fantastic memorial garden.
St Arnaud was a lot bigger than I thought with many places to eat. We stopped for lunch at the Dancing Kelpie Bistro. It was the best food we have had for a while.

      Avoca

      July 22, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Decided to leave the Botanical gardens about 1.30 as a cold wind blowing. Drove down the Avenue of remembrance. This avenue contains approx 3000 trees and is in remembrance of soldiers of WW1 who enlisted from Ballarat and surrounds. It covers 22 kms. Drove onto Avoca where we had a coffee at a cafe that specialises in gluten free. Bought a GF roast chicken for dinner. On the way back to the Caravan Park went to Ryans IGA store which had a huge Gluten free selection.Read more

      Avoca

      November 10, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

After booking our caravan in for a product recall service in Maryborough, the weekend finally arrived. Earlier in the week we made the decision to combine this trip with actually using our van as it needed to be brought here anyway. We packed up the van Wednesday night, both worked Thursday and left home Friday at 7:15am. Whilst walking around in Maryborough waiting for the van, we decided to head across to Avoca and stay in a free camp on the river, which happened to be in the middle of town. It's a pretty place and not too noisy. A short walk across a road was the RV park with a toilet we could access.
As we set up the Van on Friday afternoon we discovered 2 annoying things; 1. The pop up roof was stuck, so we could only pop it half way up at one end and 2. The caravan toilet wasn't flushing. Cue a large sigh and some unskilled owners trying to fix the problems.
When it became clear we were not up to the task we just decided to enjoy the day and settled down for a G&T and dinner.

On Saturday we worked out that it was a failed gas strut causing the roof issue so we (meaning Jamie) disengaged the strut and up popped the roof. But no such luck with fixing the toilet.

We took a drive out to the state Forrest and a look out which was a lovely view of grape vines and mountains. We had lunch at the Blue Pyrenees winery and then headed to the Mount Avoca (organic) winery for a tasting. Some lovely wines and a fantastic lunch in a pretty patio setting.

Both of us have work to do and neither of us are making much headway. Thank goodness today is nowhere near as hot as yesterday.

      More Tiny House Territory

      May 20, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Some more beautiful shots of the surrounding country. This destination was very well thought out as you have minimal contact with anyone else and so the solitude is very real and all encompassing.
It is a great place to go device free and immerse yourself in the experience of being of the grid.
The tiny house was also very well appointed and had everything that we required to enjoy our stay...I especially liked the campfire mitts and the iron campfire pan.

      Tiny House (cont’d)

      May 21, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Lots of great books to read whilst you stay in the tiny house.
The Consolations of Philosophy was especially enlightening and it was fun to read up on Socrates, Montaigne, and some others. I have much in common with philosophers it seems with the work I do and the people and issues we discuss.
Jen created this amazing dessert which was comprised of marshmallows, dark chocolate, gluten free biscuits and peanut butter layered on top of one another and then cooked over low heat on the campfire...delicious.
We also did quite a few walks around the different areas of the property which was also very relaxing.

      Tiny House

      May 20, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

This is such a beautiful location and such a great place for this little house to be situated.
It has everything that you need to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings...small kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom.
Cooking over an open fire is also very enjoyable and last night I cooked vegetarian Mexican inspired tortillas with cauliflower, beans, cheese and halloumi.

      Tiny House...

      May 21, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Cooking food over a campfire is a really cool experience and provides an insight into just how much energy you burn finding wood and then creating the fire and then keeping the fire going.
The nights were very cold so we had to ensure that Ace was sufficiently warm...and as you can see we had the best weather imaginable for the experience.
I was looking forward to doing some four wheel driving close by however the one track that was close by only went for a couple of hundred metres which was a little disappointing.
Having said that being able to take the car off road is really cool.
