      Shepparton

      Pour nous y rendre nous optons pour le train, a priori moyen le plus simple. Arrivée au guichet la gentille hôtesse nous indique que nous n’aurons pas de sous à dépenser puisque les transports sur cette ligne sont gratuits, youpi! et elle nous attribue deux places en première classe, super youpi!! Sauf que le train n’a jamais démarré et qu’il a été remplacé par un bus! On comprend mieux la gratuité! Si seulement la SNCF pouvait en faire de même quand ils ont des problèmes réguliers sur leurs lignes!

      Une fois sur place nous nous dirigeons vers le camping le plus proche du centre ville. Nous sommes accueillis assez froidement. On nous fait bien comprendre qu’il s’agit d’un camping pour vacanciers, et nous devons négocier pour au moins pouvoir y passer une nuit. Une fois le campement établis en route vers le centre ville à la recherche d’un travail. Nous trouvons un premier contact de ferme dans un supermarché, puis deux autres contacts en nous rendant chez un gros primeur.

      En ce qui concerne la ville de Shepparton et bien je ne vous la conseillerai pas pour les vacances. Il n’y a pas grand chose à faire hormis un joli lac, avec pas mal d’espèces d’oiseaux différents, au sud, un musée d’art contemporain, et des vaches peintes un peu partout en ville (projet artistique pour souligner l'importance de l'industrie laitière locale!). Côté culturel il y a une flopée de festivals du type fête de la poire, fête de la tomate, …

      La vie économique de la ville et de sa région est principalement tournée autour de son activité agricole. La Goulburn Valley est traversée par la Goulburn River et est bordée au nord par la Murray River. Particulièrement bien irriguée cette région est propice à l’agriculture intensive.

      Le lendemain matin nous demarchons par téléphone les fermes à la première heure. Il ne nous aura pas fallu bien longtemps pour trouver un employeur, dés le premier appel, notre interlocuteur nous demande si nous sommes disponibles pour commencer dans la journée.

      Nouvelle destination Grahamvalle, au nord de Shepparton, à une heure à pied du centre ville.      Read more

      SAM / Heritage Centre Museum Shepparton

      Um dem gänzlichen Kulturverlust entgegen zu wirken, beschlossen Alex und ich heute das "Shepparton Art Museum" sowie das "Heritage Centre Museum" von Shepparton zu besuchen.
      Die Art Gallery war relativ klein (also zumindest der kostenfreie Bereich) und typisch australisch mit Kunstwerken der Aborigines, sowie moderner Werke nationaler und internationaler Künstler bestückt. Die Angestellten waren äußerst freundlich. Sie erklärten uns beim Betreten kurz den Aufbau der Galerie und beim Verlassen bekamen wir noch einen Fragebogen, in welchem unsere Meinung zur Ausstellung gefragt war - gerade weil wir "von weit herkommen" sei dies für sie besonders interessant. Momentan wird an einer neuen Galerie gearbeitet, welche voraussichtlich in den nächsten zwei Jahren fertig gestellt werden und dann noch mehr Besucher anziehen soll. Uns hat besonders eine Wachsfigur beeindruckt, die eine ältere Frau mit einem Baby auf dem Arm darstellte. Beinahe gruselig. :D
      Ganz in der Nähe befindet sich eine Parkanlage. Hier sind unter anderem einige Kühe der "Mooving Art"-Ausstellung (ähnlich der Löwen in Schwerin oder der Bären in Berlin) und ein kleiner japanischer Garten angelegt. Entlang des Goulburn Rivers konnten wir zudem wieder eine Menge lautstark krähender Kakadus entdecken.
      Anschließend machten wir uns auf den Weg zum Museum. Dies war von außen erst kaum als ein solches zu erkennen. Der Mann, der das Museum führt fragte uns gleich woher wir kommen und als was wir denn in Deutschland arbeiten. Er selbst hat auch lange im sozialen Bereich gearbeitet und gestaltet nun Führungen für Schulklassen. Mit viel Freude gab er uns Tipps, wie man so eine Museums-Tour für Kinder interessant gestalten und sie für 'Geschichte' motivieren kann. In dem Museum geht es schließlich um die mehr oder wenige ereignisreiche Geschichte Sheppartons - und wir haben in den letzten Wochen ja schon einen ganz guten Eindruck davon bekommen können, wie "spannend" dieser Ort sein kann. . .       Lake Victoria

      Ostern stand vor der Tür und da es nahezu unmöglich ist, unbemerkt voneinander Geschenke zu besorgen, haben wir uns entschieden an diesem langen freien Wochenende ein Barbecue am See zu machen.
      Bereits am Vortag bereitete ich also einen Nudelsalat vor, den Rest packten wir kurz bevor wir uns auf den Weg machten zusammen. Typisch australisch gab es auch hier wieder öffentliche Barbecueplätze und Toiletten in unmittelbarer Nähe. Das Wetter enttäuscht uns ja bereits seit Wochen nicht, sodass wir einen gemütlichen Nachmittag am See verbringen konnten. Unsere Burger wurden PERFEKT - langsam werden wir wohl Profis! ;-)
      Eine willkommene Abwechslung zu unserer Einöde im Haus. :D      Read more

      Weiterfahrt auf der kurvenreichen und engen Great Ocean Road und am Nachmittag Ankunft in Melbourne, wo wir die nächsten 3 Nächte bleiben. Hier ist das Wetter wieder richtig warm.

      Day 4: Goulburn Valley Music Festival

      Woke to a beautiful day, blue skies & sunshine- just perfect for The Goulburn Valley County Music Festival 😍

      Started the day prepping for the long drive tomorrow and gave our new washing machine a whirl, or at least Johnny was whirling as he was agitating the water in the bucket 😜

      Next up, a visit to MOVE-the museum of vehicle evolution.

      Mid arvo we headed over to the Showgrounds, found ourselves a spot on the grass and chilled out as the sun set and the music flowed, listening to Felicity Urouhart, Casey Barnes and Brad Cox. Ending with Lee Kernaghan and the Wolf Brothers under a star lit sky- a perfect ending to the inaugural GV Music Festival. Will definitely aim to return next year.      Read more

      Steam motorcycle at Shepparton Motor Mus

      I am not sure I would be comfortable sitting atop a steam boiler that has potential to fail catastrophically. This example is a replica of the original, built as closely as the few photos and illustrations allowed.

      The original was built by Sylvester H. Roper around 1867-1869. Roper was a prolific inventor who had also made steam powered carriages that had been seen driving around Boston. He also had quite a few patents jointly and on his own.

      The steam bicycle had been pitted against professional riders of the day in a velodrome. None could outpace the contraption that had recorded speeds of 40mph. (64kph)

      Perhaps the most enduring historical fact was when he died while riding the steam motorbike. The bike started to wobble and he fell sustaining head injuries. A later autopsy found he had suffered a heart failure but it was uncertain if he had died before the fall or not. Either way he was to remembered as the first recorded motor cycle fatality. Since the steam had been turned off there is some thought that he may have realized he was not well.      Read more

      Excelsior 1917 Big X motorcycle

      The Excelsior motor manufacturering company was number 3 in America. Only Indian and Harley Davidson sold more motorbikes at that time.

      Costing $265us this 1000cc bike was trimmed in drab olive with a large X in gold and silver on the tank. It had 3 speed transmission. With its huge motor and solid frame I wonder how painful it would have been to ride.Read more

      Victoria Lake Caravan Park

      For a couple of nights in Shepparton we decided to stay at Victoria Lake Caravan park. We were here a couple of years back and enjoyed a walk around the lake. After our walk we had lunch at a very nice Cafe close to where the caravan park is located.

      That Cafe is gone. Unceremoniously ripped apart by big business dollars and to be replaced with a new commercialised venture no doubt. We heard mention of an art gallery but wonder what will become of the existing one. Perhaps there are more bulldozer plans waiting.

      In the park we were greeted each day by many friendly swamp hens. They strutted up from the water to our camp and did not care that we were there in the least. Tiny wrens also regularly hopped merrily through our camp as they foraged for tiny grass seeds on the dround. Sometimes they move fast across the ground. Other times they skelter at even more speed.

      While here we caught up on some washing and went grocery shopping for the week ahead.      Read more

      Day 1: Shepparton

      Headed off mid day for a leisurely drive up to Shepparton. Driving through the city is always stressful towing, but the stress continued as Justine took to the wheel to practice driving MancHester along the undulating Hume Fwy all the way to our home for the next few days: Victoria Lake Caravan Park.
      We were greeted by a cacophony of Cockatoo squawks - thousands of them 😳
      The beautiful weather we enjoyed on the drive up changed as we had set up, with dark clouds and the suggestion of rain in the air- oh well cosy night in and late morning it is 😜

      Day 2

      Day 2: Exploring Shep

      We were cozily tucked up in our bed last night being lulled to sleep by the sound of gentle rain on the roof, but that didn’t last long. First came a train, so loud it could have been flying above us Harry Potter style. Next the screeches of tyres and the sounds of someone doing donuts and burnouts nearby. Then there were raised voices, a lovers tiff perhaps??
      Having eventually settled to sleep, we awoke to thousands of cockatoo’s welcoming the dawn, all talking at the same time, screaming to be heard over one another, on and on and on, until the sun was firmly in place
      The peace and tranquillity of living in the country amongst nature 😳

      Woke to a damp and overcast morning, but that didn’t put us off.

      Decided on a pre breakfast walk around the lake, but in true Horrox style we saw a path, leading to a bridge, and onto a trail, so detoured to explore. We found ourselves walking trails along the Goulburn River and Honeysuckle Creek, over bridges, through forests, amongst billabongs, finding sculptures along the way and the Botanic Gardens completely by accident. The 8km walk finished with a quick skidaddle around the lake then back for a much needed coffee.

      Later a visit to SAM, the art museum. Then off to find some interesting street art, under bridges, on walls and the odd cow or two 😜
