Day 6
Freycinet NP TAS

Tassie is really turning it on for us. Another cracking day in shorts and t-shirts exploring Coles Bay and the Freycinet NP.

First up (and I mean literally up) we hiked to Wineglass Bay lookout for an amazing panoramic view of the headland and glistening turquoise water below.

Next on the tourist trail we checked out Honeymoon Bay and Sleepy Bay, interesting geological contrasts on opposing sides of the isthmus. Last bust not least we drove out to Cape Tourville Lighthouse and explored the cliff top boardwalk with views back into Wineglass Bay.

It was a long slow drive to our next accommodation, but not without some beautiful scenery and a few interesting finds along the way - such as Spiky Bridge near Swansea, made in 1843 entirely out of field stones without any mortar or cement. Stones have been laid vertically along the parapet, giving the bridge a spiky appearance. The ‘spikes’ protect the bridge from harsh winds. Some people claim they were put in place to stop cattle falling over the sides.

We ended the day with dinner at the Dodges Ferry Hotel before returning to Beachside Family Surf Retreat, Carlton - our quirky home for the next few nights - and by quirky I mean who doesn’t love an indoor banana tree and a bath tub in the ping-pong room 🤪Read more

Day 13
Swansea - a big day

Left St Helens for the 2 hr drive to Swansea but took us all day as there were so many great beaches to stop in on the way.
Bicheno was a great little town - has moved to the top of our list of places to retire to. Spent a bit of time trying to time the blow holes photo op.
Drove to Coles Bay and 3/4 of us climbed the mountain to look at Wineglass Bay. I told them to take a photo for me. The icecream photos are part a and b - part a eating icecream while looking at part b shithot view.
Finally got to Swansea where we have an ocean view cabin. The final photo is the view from our balcony across the bay. Life is good!!Read more

Tasmanien - Freycinet National Park

Morgens sind wir von unserem AirBnB Richtung Freycinet National Park gestartet. Die Fahrt sollte laut Navi ca. 3 Stunden dauern. Nach etwa einer Stunde haben wir jedoch festgestellt, dass die ausgewählte Route teilweise nur für 4WD Fahrzeuge empfohlen wird. Daraufhin haben wir einen anderen Weg gewählt und nach 30min bemerkt, dass wir leider im Kreis gefahren sind. Daher haben wir entschieden, nur noch dem Highway A3 zu folgen, um weiteren Unannehmlichkeiten aus dem Weg zu gehen. Insgesamt benötigten wir dann etwas mehr als 4h zum Ziel. Dort angekommen, waren wir über den Eintrittspreis des Nationalparks geschockt: Ein Tagesticket für ein Auto (inkl. max. 8 Mitfahrer*innen) kostet etwas mehr als 40 Dollar (ca. 28€). Zum Vergleich: auf dem Festland Australiens bezahlten wir für ein vergleichbares Ticket 0 - 12 AUD.

Oft wird damit geworben, dass der Wineglass Beach einer der Top 10 Strände der ganzen Welt sein soll. Daher führte unsere erste Wanderung zu einem Lookout von dem man einen besonders guten Blick auf den Strand hat. Der Weg dorthin war moderat und gut zu bewältigen. Leider hat das Wetter nicht mitgespielt und es war ziemlich bewölkt. Daher war der Ausblick auf den Strand nicht ganz so gut wie man ihn von Fotos her kennt. Der Strand ist wunderschön, keine Frage, jedoch können wir das Ranking nicht nachvollziehen. Vor allem, da wir am Tag zuvor unseren persönlichen Traumstrand auf der Halbinsel Tasmaniens entdeckt hatten.

Unser nächster Stopp war der Honeymoon Beach. Tatsächlich kam kurz nach Ankunft die Sonne raus und wir konnten etwas bei schönem Wetter auf den Felsen entspannen.

Diese Nacht verbrachten in einem süßen Hostel in Swansea. Zum Sonnenuntergang machten wir noch einen entspannten, kleinen Spaziergang zum Strand.Read more
