      Heading back East

      August 16, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Woke up to a cold but pleasant morning In St George. Braved the cold to give my hair a wash, had breakfast then drove into town to have a quick look around St George as we didn’t really see a whole lot last night. To be honest there wasn’t a whole lot to see apart from an interesting bridge and a phone tower Rob organised out there many years ago.

Just outside of town there is a dam which sounded interesting when I read up about it but in reality wasn’t. There were quite a few kangaroos hanging around there which was the highlight.

Next stop the small town of Surat. About half way there Rob realised we were running short on petrol and I started panicking. Basically if there wasn’t any in Surat we were stuffed. And google was giving us mixed results. Thankfully it turned out there was a small station there - crisis averted.

We had some morning tea by the river and went along part of the river walk there which was pleasant.

Next we took the “Surat Development Road” our East. Had no idea what a development road was but it turned out to be a bitumen road with a plethora of bumps so you felt a bit like you were riding a roller coaster most of the way.

We arrived at a place called Glen Morgan where there was an old car yard and museum there, looked interesting but not very open so we just had a quick look outside.

Not far past was Meanderry which was the spot for our lunch. Unfortunately not a very picturesque place so we plonked ourselves next to some old military vehicles on display. It was at about this time, after Rob was speaking to some locals, that we realised that perhaps some of the strange treatment we’d received along the trip (including the finger from a P plater for no real reason) was because of the Victorian number plates the rental van had. Nobody likes the COVID state at the moment.

The town of Tara was our next stop. Still no coverage (been that way pretty much all day) so had to try and find the walk I’d read about from memory. Soon found the park and went for a walk around the river. Was hoping to get all the way around but the path across the water had been washed away so that was the end of that idea! Found the rememberance gardens which were a little underwhelming but did tell the story of the first settlers in the area which was somewhat interesting.

Then it was on to Dalby, our ultimate destination for the day. After plugging in, we went for a walk into town which was totally dead. Not sure if that’s because it’s a Sunday night or because it’s always that way. There were quite a few places for lease so that’s never a good sign. The walk along the water was semi pleasant at least. In the end decided to have dinner at the pub by the tourist park and ended up running into old friends Claire & Miles - it’s a very small world!

Bunkered up for a very cold night after that - getting down to 3 in the morning!

      Dalby Day 3

      September 3, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Up early to watch Erin ride this morning, had coffee and then off to look at antiques. Had gorgeous lunch at a lovely Cafe, just a bit slow, then back to finish looking at the museum. Tried finding Swap n Go for gas bottles, but apparently haven't had any anywhere up here for 3 weeks. Back for an early night in, it's cold, raining and a bit windy.Read more

      Miles Qld

      September 23, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Well, after back tracking to Moree (3 hours out of our way) we are at Miles caravan park. We love this park. Private bathrooms with room to swing the cats, the local RSL will deliver you food and the camp kitchen has an ice machine- yes an ice machine - as well as anything else you could need, pizza oven, microwave wave, fire pit etc. Photo is one tired french bulldog from big walks and drivingRead more

      Dalby Day 2

      September 1, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Up early to watch Erin ride, new experience for Grandy and Grandad, being a Challenge & Campdraft rather than just a Campdraft that they usually see. After morning tea, checked out the local museum. Pretty amazing displays, so much stuff that they actually let you come back any time over the next week to get around the whole thing. We left at about 2.30 so we could have lunch, think we'd only done a bit over half of it. Bad idea, everything shuts around 2 o'clock here. They mustn't believe in afternoon coffee. Did find a bakery, so we didn't starve. Back to the showgrounds for drinks, nibbles, Clancie cuddles and dinner.Read more

      Rain coming St George

      July 1, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Friday.....A 'wave' of wet weather is expected along the east coast, with a month worth of rain falling in Sydney in one day. Some rain is also expected in St George, but nothing like the quantity along the coast. So a decision was made to stay put for a couple of days, instead of driving in the rain.
It started raining here after lunch, and while it wasn't too heavy, it was persistent and cold. We went up to the camp kitchen tonight to enjoy the heat from the wood fire. Plenty of others where there doing the same thing. One couple told me to go to Golders and buy a 'dry as a bone' dog coat for Frankie.

      Dalby Day 1

      August 31, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Walked around town this morning, did some shopping and had a coffee before continuing our trip east. Started seeing cropping again, been a bit light on for a while. Lots of wattle trees. Stopped at Moonie for lunch, missed the Yabbie Races (March), but learnt about the area. Still producing oil, heaps of cactuses, lots of crops and cattle. Saw an echidna today on the side of the road, not living, and 1 yesterday, running onto the road. Got to Dalby about 30 minutes ahead of Dean, Erin and Clancie, set up camp for a few days and are ready for tomorrow.Read more

Day 22 - Lightning Ridge to Moonie

      January 25, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

After a magnificent sunset last night it is time to head back to Noosa. First impression on the road was how green everything is! The floods last year have left a legacy of lush undergrowth and green trees everywhere. Not your usual outback and this is something to remember. Crossing the border back into Queensland we gave a loud cheer which was echoed by the barking of Chanel :-)
First stop was the beautiful painted silos at Thallon. However this time there was a huge layer of grain lying in front of the silos covered in blue plastic. As one of the locals told us, the flood predictions were that the grain harvest would be down a lot due to the floods. But this did not occur and instead one of the largest bumper harvests of all time occurred with over 250,000 tons of grain being harvested. This is way too much to store in silos so all over this region large stores of grain can be seen in front of all silos. It will take more than a year to get distribute this huge grain harvest.
Then it was off to the oldest pub in Queensland at Nindigully which opened for business in 1864. Among the memorabilia on the walls was a charcoal drawing of the pub made in 1881 by a swagman who was grateful to receive a free meal and painted the charcoal-on-linen drawing as a thank you.
We finally reached the pub and campsite at Moonie. A hot 36 degrees and we were thankful the air conditioning in the caravan can run off the inverter and batteries. Not a particularly great campsite, but strategically located to allow a sensible distance tomorrow for the last drive home.

      Bunya Whispers: Dreams Take Flight

      January 7 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

The road whispered tales of anticipation as we finally rolled into our first planned destination—the Bunya Mountains, their beauty an embrace of welcome. It was a moment painted in disbelief, as if the canvas of our dreams had come to life before our eyes.

Twenty-two months had danced between the day we purchased our bus—still nameless, yet brimming with promise—and this moment. Twenty-two months of life's ebb and flow, of work's demands, and of tireless love poured into transforming a simple bus into a home on wheels.

Now, beneath the watchful gaze of ancient trees, we found ourselves in a sanctuary of stillness. The weight of accomplishment settled upon us, each breath a quiet celebration of the miracle we had woven together.

For today was not merely an arrival; it was a genesis. The first brushstroke upon a boundless canvas, marking the dawn of our nomadic narrative. A life unbound by walls, guided by the whisperings of the wind and the allure of distant horizons.

With hearts alight and spirits unbound, we stepped into this new season, embracing the freedom that danced upon the breeze. Our home on wheels, our faithful companion, stood ready to carry us into the tapestry of dreams yet to be discovered.
