      Winton - Dinoasaur museum

      June 30, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We called in to see the Dinosaur museum which houses the worlds largest collection of Australian Dinosaurs fossils. The museum is situated on a high jump up with wonderful views over the surrounding country.

It all began with the discovery of a giant femur. In 1999 while mustering sheep on his property Belmont near Winton, David Elliott discovered the fossilised bone of what was, at the time, Australia’s largest dinosaur. This bone was later identified as part of a giant femur from a Cretaceous sauropod that roamed the Winton area 95 million years ago.

      Winton

      October 5, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We arrived in Winton for lunch. Set up the caravan at the caravan park in the Main Street. Again another very hot day. We spent the afternoon in the Waltzing Matilda museum, which, as well as being cool was surprisingly interesting. Back at the campsite there were Brolgas walking down the street(both evening and early morning). There was a bit of a downpour overnight around 11 Mls so things were pretty wet for an early pack up.
We arrived at the Australian age of dinosaurs at 8:45 for our tour. We cut it a little fine after another mishap typical of us. As Jamie turned into the servo for fuel it triggered the emergency break. The caravan was still half way across the main drag of Winton. We were initially unable to put the plug back in however eventually did so. It’s remarkably easy when you put it in the right way!😁. Fortunately we didn’t need the RACQ although Jamie had started h the e call. Also on the way we drove past. Cattle muster in progress.

Anyway The Australian Age of Dinosaurs 🦖 🦕was fantastic. So interesting and a real up close experience watching the staff and volunteers uncover and repair the fossils. The setting was spectacular and included a section of a dinosaur stampede m, which they had dug up, relocated in pieces, and put back together over 3 years in an environment that will preserve it. The guides were informative and answer lots of questions. There was also some amazing re enactments set along a walk and interpretive displaces to explain.

      Winton & local Opal

      May 30, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After a lovely dinner with a beautiful sunset we're all ready for a good night of sleep! The Matilda Motel it is for tonight, and whilst the kids sleep Guido and me finish watching the serie 1883. It is about settlers in America, but it has similarities with the Australian Outback, so it really spoke to us.

In the morning I'm keen to get to know more about the Opal that's mined in the regio. When walking through the town I come in contact with Joseph, who lives in Winton and has his own opal mine and shop where he sells the opal he finds and makes jewells of it. What a fasciating life he has. He compares his mining and life a bit with surfing, where you also play / fight with the elements. Me and the boys get to seach for opal in a big pile of rocks from his mine, and we find some nice pieces of (boulder) opal! I love these treasures of the Outback.

But, time to jump in the car, we have a big drive today! We're heading for Townsville. We'll start with some schooling in the car, and probably there'll be some Minecrafting done to by the boys 😉😉.

      More museums

      April 29, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Water levels dropped and the road to Winton opened so we went on the spur of the moment.
So glad that we didn't sit on the side of the road for 4 days with all the caravans doing nothing waiting for the road to open.
It is 170km of the most boring road we have driven.
Town was nice and all the 4 pubs were very busy.
We visited the Walzing Matilda museum, the musical fence, the birthplace of Qantas, arno's
wall ( just a crazy guy who has never taken nothing to the tip and cemented it into his fence now people line up to see it and Wintons truck museum ( so very well presented trucks not to mention all the working trucks in town are some of the oldest trucks I have seen running around as daily drives.)

      Age of Dinosaurs Centre, Winton

      September 17, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

What a wonderful opportunity to witness the painstakingly fascinating process of unearthing actual dinosaur bones around 95 Million years old! In 1999 while mustering sheep on his property Belmont near Winton, David Elliott discovered the fossilised bone of what was, at the time, Australia’s largest dinosaur. This bone was later identified as part of a giant femur from a Cretaceous sauropod (long necked 🦕 ) that roamed the Winton area 95 million years ago. Since then, diggings have unearthed a treasure trove of fossils. One of their most exciting finds was that of “Matilda” (a sauropod) and “Banjo” (a theropod - bit like a velociraptor ) lying together- with 30% of their bones in tact - apparently a huge bonus in palaeontology. Their best theory is that Matilda was stuck in mud ( a common thing for huge 30 tonne beasts back in the day, apparently) so Banjo saw his opportunity and attacked. Matilda managed to slap him down, probably with her tail, and killed the little rascal.
There were so many other stories and the enthusiasm of staff was infectious. We met some volunteers as they were working on “ Judy”, a sauropod only unearthed three weeks ago. They had almost all of her neck bones and were working with high powered precision air drills to clean away 95 million years worth of crud. The pic in the magnifier is one of those pieces. Just awe inspiring!
Tours included the fossil lab, the collection centre where we met Matilda and Banjo, and the March of the Titanosaurs in Dinosaur Canyon, a few Ks from the main centre. This display (complete with cute Dino statues 😃) is a preserved river scene showing footprints of a huge array of dinos as they travel back and forth through and around the drinking holes.
We had a fabulous visit and would love to have the opportunity to volunteer to work on these awesome findings. Maybe next time ! 🦕 🦖 🐊 🦅

      Chicken Racing, Winton

      August 7, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Wow, camel racing then pig racing ... now chicken racing!
The chicken's feathers have been dyed and they are all trained to chase after a remote control car, (which is filled with chicken feed).
There is also an auction which raises funds for a local charity. When we were there we bet $6 on the orange chicken, "Apricot" and $12 on a multi colored chicken named "Diamantina". The prize money was $50. Sadly we didn't win but it's great fun to watch.Read more
