    • Day 5

      Vienne

      May 8, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Youpi on a réussi !

      Vienna, last day

      July 1, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Once again we crammed in as much as we could. So much to see here! We went to the Leopold Museum and the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts), plus walked and gawked. Tomorrow we head to Germany on the train.

      1. There is art EVERYWHERE here, including tunnels.
      2. Lots of flower stands. The Viennese love beauty, it seems.
      3. and 4. From the MAK
5.-8. Details from the exhibits at MAK. We also saw Klimt’s Tree of Life there.
      9. Schubert monument in the Stadtpark
      10. Really good meals today, even if not traditional Viennese food. This was a falafel bowl from a street kiosk. The purple sauce is beetroot tahini. Yum! Terrific Indian food for dinner.

      Grateful for a tour guide!

      June 25, 2022 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

Cecilia was our guide today. She took us to the market, to have Viennese cake, we also tried the banana one which was so yummy, and to this cool apartment designed by a famous artist. We had schnitzel Austria style and went in a big bubble! Such fun acoustics in there. Then back to the festival with more of Cecilia’s friends. We listened to the techno djs and had beer. It was fun to dance and a guy even paid for our drinks just because he didn’t want to wait for us to use a credit card! We then had to pee and lost our spot in the crowd and ended up eating some fair food and going home instead of going out. Food over parties tends to be our way.Read more

      Naschmarkt

      September 23, 2023 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

The Naschmarkt for breakfast...fully clothed for the first time 😁

Vienna's most popular market, with 16th-century origins, with more than 100 food & vintage stalls, plus restaurants, stretching 1.5 kms... so much food 😋 Manner chocolate is delicious, and I discovered it's not only Blackpool that have back scratchers!

Majolikahaus of Otto Wagner is an example of Vienna's Art Nouveau architecture 🤓

Sign my petition for more dogs in bars.

      June 3, 2023 in Austria ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Okay, so ... I know these pictures are a bit out of order. But I put the very best at the beginning. We went out for drinks after dinner and another patron brought in the dog while hanging out. The dog hopped up the Lucie (the dog owner confirmed it was okay with Lucie first), sat down, and just plopped his cute little head on her lap. If made my heart fall into my butt, it was so cute. Apparently he is approximately 10 years old and was found on the streets. He was so incredibly sweet and well-behaved. Please take a moment to sign my imaginary petition to get more dogs to hangout in bars.

I also am putting some pictures from the walk before the bar, in front of the bar, at the bar, and after the bar.

It was the first time Lucie and I had ever seen a full blown vending area that had alcohol, cigarettes, condoms, medication, and sushi (just to name a few). We were blown away. Also, check out this cool cathedral thing.

      Vienna Day 5 Leopold Museum

      October 19, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Today we spent about 4hrs in the Leopold Museum that housed works by the artists' of the 1900.

It showed work by Klimt from his early work till his work called Death and Life. His studio was also on show. Lots of Egon Schiele, and the artist from the Secession period, like Giestyl, Schindler, Hans Markt, Oskar Kokoschka and Max Oppenheimer.
Furniture by Kololmen Moser, and Josef Hoffmann.

I felt that the Museum was very well laid out and the work was really thought provoking and emotive.

After the museum, we did a walking tour for 1900. The guide literally walked us through from Hitler's early days, his life in Linz, Vienna, his failure to be accepted into The Academy of Fine Arts, his 4 years living as a vagabond, selling watercolour cards, to finally joining the German army and the rest is history. The final part of the tour was where Hitler stood to address Austrian. Wonderful guide and a great story teller.

      Distance walked 8.4km

    • Day 179

      Vienna

      September 12, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We went out for breakfast out then checked out of our space hostel and made our way to the more centrally located hostel for the rest of our Vienna stay, Wombats. We dropped off our bags, did some grocery shopping and made some sandwiches for the rest of the week for lunches.

We then went out for a big walk around Vienna, walking around the main ‘ring road’ and chatting all day as we went.

We first walked past the St Charles Church, before making our way to the State Opera theatre. Our next stop was the Maria Theresa statute in front of the Natural History and Art Museums. Maria Theresa was well known for having 16 children whom she married off to various countries in order to keep peace and expand the Habsburg rule and the influence of the Austrian empire. The most famous of these children is Marie Antoinette, who was killed in the French Revolution.

We made our way further along the ring road and passed the Parliament and some other buildings. We then left the ring road and and walked along the Danube, our third city where we have seen this river. We continued on to the Prater amusement park, one of the largest ones in Europe (which also contains the oldest ferris wheel). It was fun just to walk through and see all the rides, especially the five dodgem tracks!

We walked through the massive park and back into the city to our hostel where we checked in, chilled for a bit and cooked ourselves a pasta dinner.

We then headed out for a very cultural night of classical music by Mozart and Vivaldi at the Vienna Music Hall (called the Weiner Musikverein) with a performance by the Vienna Music Association. This is called the ‘tourist concert’ because typically the works of Mozart and Vivaldi would never be on at the same concert but it is an excellent way to experience classical music, an integral part of Viennese and Austrian culture. Although we very very little about classical music, the 2 hour performance was definitely impressive and it was beautiful hearing the various pieces and seeing the talent of the musicians! We then walked back around 15 mins to the hostel for bed.

    • Day 59

      Wien

      July 30, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      August 25, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

😃😀Read more
