      Traditionelles Wien

      Heute stand ein besonderes Ereignis - wenigstens für mich. Der Besuch der spanischen Hofreitschule Wien.
      Wir besuchten das morgendliche Training der Bereiter. Die Lipizzaner sind wunderschöne Tiere. Sehr faszinierend ist der berufliche Werdegang der „Bereiter“. Man braucht ca. 8-12 Jahre bis man so weit ist und nur die besten Absolventen schaffen es überhaupt so weit. Die Ausbildung beginnt „ganz“ unten und wird von der Pike auf gelehrt. Die traditionelle Ausbildung wird teilweise nur durch „mündliche“ Überlieferungen weiter getragen.
      Beim Training werden verschiedenste Pferde mit unterschiedlichen Ausbildungsständen gezeigt. Nicht alle Übungen werden gezeigt. Wir konnten aber ein paar Piaffen und Levaden (Pferd steht nur auf den Hinterbeinen und zieht die Vorderbeine an den Körper) sehen.

      Anschließend machten wir uns auf den Weg zum Wiener Prater. Eine Fahrt mit dem über 100 Jahre alten Riesenrad durfte nicht fehlen. Die Aussicht über Wien war toll!!

      Danach probierten wir diverse Fahrgeschäfte. Lea wollte überall drauf aber manches war dann doch zu doll.
      Es gab Eis und Pommes und die Welt war wieder in Ordnung!

      Es regnet. So viel, dass seit gestern für Wien Hochwasserwarnung gilt. Kein Grund zur Panik, alles Routine.
      Wir weichen auf Museen und Theater aus. So wie alle anderen auch. In den einen paar trockenen Stunden besteigen wir den Stephansdom und besuchen den Prater.
      Wir haben Zeit unsere Veloreise zu verdauen und über unsere Erlebnisse zu diskutieren. Wir nehmen ganz unterschiedliche Eindrücke mit.      Read more

      Nog even nagenieten van Rammstein doe je natuurlijk het beste in het Weense Prater, het pretpark midden in de stad. Fun fact: het bekende reuzenrad daar is gebouwd in juli 1897 dus deze maand kan het 126 kaarsjes uitblazen.Read more

      Final Day in Vienna

      Day began with a long walk over to Copa Beach. We enjoyed lunch at a Greek sidewalk cafe before walking back. Some lovely pictures from over there.

      In the afternoon we went for a Taste of Vienna . Crazy traffic in downtown Vienna too. Pictures posted included City Hall, Burg Theater and our first culinary stop for hot chocolate at a place called Landtman Cafe, a coffee shop frequented by Sigmund Freud. The next stop was a traditional sausage shop right on the square next to Saint Stephen's.. It was an excellent sausage with cheese.

      Nur ein Katzensprung von Klosterneuburg ist es für uns nach Wien zu radeln. Mit den bepackt Rädern ist Sightseeing nicht so einfach. Wir radeln durch die Stadt und sehen aber schon viele Highlights von Wien. Am Abend geht's noch in den Prater.Read more

      VIENNA ein Super WE mit guten Freuden

      Vienna, hier haben wir uns mit guten Freunden getroffen, die Stadt erkundet und das Nachtleben genossen. Der Start war leider holprig da uns dort die Einspritzleitung gebrochen ist. Dadurch mussten wir eine Nacht im Industriegebiet Nächtigen und uns ein Ersatzteil besorgen was aber gut funktioniert hat. Der Einbau hat 10min gedauert und so konnten wir nach Plan alles abarbeiten. Ölwechsel+ Motorcheck, Tierarzt besuch, unsere Impfungen organisieren und das schönste, mit unseren Freunden die Stadt unsicher machen.Read more

      Day 4

      Dritter Tag in Wien

      January 7 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

      Tag 3: Bis wir aus den Federn kamen und in den Schneeregen traten, war es bereits Mittag. Aber für etwas hat man ja Ferien 😁

      Dieses Jahr ist Maud die grosse Finderin der herrlichen Frühstücks-Cafés 👸🏻 Zum Glück ist Wien mit dem ÖV gut erschlossen und zudem extrem günstig (je 17€ für 7 Tage vollen Zugang zu allen ÖV’s … Gruss an die SBB 👋🏼), so dass wir nicht lange im eisigen Schneeregen verbringen müssen. Im Café gibt es Avocado-Toast mit “Zmorge-Ei” (Maud) und Gipfeli mit Käse und Schinken (Sevi) sowie eine Schale Joghurt mit Granola und Früchten zum Teilen.

      To-Go Kaffee in der Hand geht es weiter in Richtung Prater. Dort ist der letzte Tag des Weihnachtsmarktes, aber sonst haben nicht viele Fahrgeschäfte offen (zudem kann ich diese Art von Zeitvertreib nicht leiden #Glückgehabt 😮‍💨😅). Das Wiener Riesenrad lassen wir uns jedoch nicht entgehen und geniessen den Ausblick auf die Stadt, der, Dank des Schneetreibens, eher mittelmässig ist. Die Marketingstrategie namens “Souvenirshop” schnappt bei Maud zu und sie ist um eine tolle orangene Mütze reicher.

      Habe ich schon erwähnt, dass es eisig kalt war?! Auf Grund dessen sah das Madame Tussauds doch sehr einladend aus. Wir machten aber kurz vor dem Eingang rechtsumkehrt, als wir sahen, dass der Eintritt 26€ pro Person kostete … so dringend mussten wir Wachs-Falco auch nicht sehen ^^ Also Churro’s mit Nutella it is und die sind auch bedeutend günstiger und schmackhafter!

      Nach diesen Strapazen waren wir bereits wieder müde und wir machten uns auf den Weg nach Hause. Am Prater Bahnhof schlugen wir uns mit gefühlt der halben Stadt durch den Supermarkt und eine Zugfahrt später waren wir wieder zurück im Hotel.

      Da wir keine Lust hatten noch einmal nach draussen zu gehen, assen wir im hoteleigenen Restaurant je einen Burger sowie ein Stück Kuchen und verbringen den restlichen Abend auf dem Hotelzimmer.

      Soaked again.

      Ominous sounds of rainfall were heard throughout the night so it was with some trepidation the curtains were drawn. Damp but not raining. Breakfast, grabbed bike & paid. Back down to the Danube for that was the basis of the next 3 or so days cycling - should be flat. Looked like there was a tailwind into the bargain. Quickly into my stride but all that came to a grinding halt - there was a guy squatted by his bike hammering away with what turned out to be a stone. Stopped & offered help. Darius was on a 4 month cycle without any tools. I hid my horror (I think) and offered the use of my sparse kit. We botched it up but his front carrier needed refitting. We chatted away trying to ignore the annoying noise and he made a sharp exit at the next town hoping for a bike shop. Ambled away for a little - saw a huge carp jump out the water. Crossed one of the many hydro-electric damns and spotted a nearby pier to try and get a better view - not chained off. Just as I left a family approached - the little lad instantly wanted to wander over seeing that I had - parents didn't look keen. Big kid... Flat with a tailwind meant the miles rattled off and was only disturbed by some uber professional cyclists zooming past me then slowing up. All matching gear no idea. Just before stopping for lunch, coming off the main path a deer darted in front of me - not sure who was more shocked. Lunch was with around 12 to go. Settled down by a lake just as a game old lady was heading in for a dip. Looked cold - she maintained not. She was impressed by the idea of cycling from Prague to Budapest - I maintained it wasn't so much. Pondered climbing upto the nearby castle but apparently it was closed and you couldn't get to see the impressive views. Saved me a climb I guess. Approaching Vienna and the first spots of rain were felt. Managed to shelter under an underpass. Was I going to be lucky - nope. Managed to get a bit lost & while trying to decipher the SATNAV the heavens opened. Absolutely drenched before I could even look for a bus stop. Glad to get to the hostel to dry out. Early tea at the hostel and then chanced my arm going back out to the big wheel. Be rude not to. Thought about heading to one of the palaces after but felt a few spots so dashed back.       It means nothing to me...Oh Vienna...

      We are on our own today! Vienna Passes dangling around our necks we head for U Bahn Taubstummeng (I thought it was something to do with a pigeon but maybe not). A short walk and we arrive at the Belvedere. Some excellent works here just before WW1 and between the wars. Off to the Klimt room where lots of people are crowded around one painting. Can't think why!

      Time for a break. Café Belvedere 1 was heaving - as was the gallery by now - so we head out into the pouring rain (first bad weather day) down to Belvedere 2. Very few people here so we have a bite to eat in the cafe before a look at the Louise Bourgeois exhibition. Which surprisingly are mostly paintings rather than her sculptures.      Read more

      Arrived Vienna at breakfast time, plan is a 1 hour coach trip around the city, then 1 hour walking then 1 hour free time. Apparently Vienna was remodelled by FranzJoseph in the mid 19th century with the removal of the city walls and replacing with the “Ring Road”. Not actually circular as both ends start/end at the Danube and serves as the boundary of historic Vienna. Subsequent development around the Ring Road followed, with large public buildings and large houses in various architectural styles, the houses are usually split by floor into apartments with the building owner usually taking the ground floor. The first few pictures are of the Ring Road taken from the coach. Wa alighted at the palace built by Franz-Josef, the palace consists of 4 large “wings” some overlooking what was the gardens, but now a park. Walking through the gardens to the palace we passed the statue of Sissi, FranzJosef’s wife. Nobody knows what this (first palace picture) was built for, now it is part museum and part offices. Moving on into a courtyard the royal apartments ( FranzJosef and Sissi) are where the balcony is. We came back to visit the Augustine church, so picture from inside, otherwise from the outside it is just the end of one the palace buildings, we moved on through the Spanish Riding School Stables into the shopping area passing St Peter’s church on our way to St Stephen’s Cathedral. Compared to Salzburg the “square” around the cathedral is very small, once away from the palace the centre felt compressed and as it was now lunchtime, very crowded.Read more
