    Mondsee - Austria

    August 8, 2017 in Austria ⋅

Drove to Český Krumlov via Mondsee. Mondsee is a beautiful lake-side town which, apart from being a very charming town and great Summer holiday spot, is where the church, St. Michael's, is situated. This is the church used for the wedding scene in the Sound of Music film. The town was vibrant and busy with markets leading to the church, while those not shopping atvthe markets were heading to the lake for a swim or sail. On to Český Krumlov...Read more

    Attersee am Attersee

    June 26, 2017 in Austria ⋅

Brief post to show you some pictures of the beautiful Attersee where we stopped for lunch en route from Vienna to Salzburg.

It was a recommendation which did not disappoint. A clear blue lake framed by mountains. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

    Taming a dragon

    April 21, 2017 in Austria ⋅

Today, we did one of Austria's highlight fixed-rope-climbs "the dragon wall". It was our first longer outdoor climb and a challenging one for beginners for sure. But after the practicing indoors, we felt ready for a more challenging one.

The hike goes up the steep wall on the left of picture #2 all the way to the mountain summit. We were climbing for 3 hours and then hiked down on the other side of the mountain for another 2. And to be honest, for the first 20 minutes or so I was quite nervous. Climbing outside simply is another story than being indoors where everything is controlled, secured and known. But being on the fixed rope is super safe and so we got to learn and enjoy 3 amazing hours of adventure.

I definitely learned to trust myself and the equipment and we've all caught the climbing fever now :)

    October 10, 2017 in Austria ⋅

We passed along Lake Attersee on the way home from Halstatt, so stopped off to let the driver have a bit of a look at the scenery. There are some serious constructions around to protect the roads from landslides!

We were laughing about the "Achtung Kinder" sign. Craig says "Mein Gott im Himmel, what's wrong with these people? At least in Australia it is only the crocodiles that eat the Germans. Here in Austria, it is the children!". Cracked us all up.

I took a photo of another funny sign which had all the things to see if you went diving in the particular part of Attersee we were at... which included what looked to be a car door, a tyre or wheel, and an oven. The best diving location!

    Sound of Music

    October 11, 2017 in Austria ⋅

We managed to see a few The Sound of Music things in Austria. Actually turned out quite hard to get a photo of alps, green grass, fir trees and to be able to actually get onto the grass. Saw lots of settings, couldn't access them!

My lovely husband did do a drive by of the church in which the scene of Maria and Captain von Trapp getting married was filmed in Mondsee, the village we were staying near.

Kate and I also went to visit the farm animals one last time in the barn.

The kids have declared this the best place we have stayed at all holidays. Ranking highly on the judging criteria were: good internet, many cats which were happy to make themselves at home in our apartment, trampoline + "the best games room ever" + swimming pool.

    AirBnB at Mondsee

    October 10, 2017 in Austria ⋅

The kids decided it was time for a swim - just the ticket when it is cold outside hey? Took me a longgggg time to get in the water, but it was quite pleasant once you were in. The coverage is good for maintaining warmth, but a shame because it was an infinity pool so I imagine the view from the pool in summer when the cover is off is quite spectacular.

Kate and I wandered over to the barn at 5pm to watch the cows being milked, visit the goats and pony and watch the calf drinking from the specially modified milking pail which had a teat attached. It was adorable.

Felix and Garfield the cats have become a permanent fixture in our house it would seem. They are the most dog-like cats I have ever come across (although admittedly my cat experience is limited to Rubix for the last 2 years).

    Same climb, different brother :)

    April 29, 2017 in Austria ⋅

Mo and I had planned a climb into a canyon at lake Wolfgang, but after a full night of snow, the climb was covered in a foot of snow and we had to change our plans. So we decided to do the dragon wall climb which I had done with my younger brother a week earlier.

It was so fun, again. Mo is such a natural climber and rocked through the 3 hour climb in just over 2 hours! I could barely keep up ;) The whole trip including hiking in and out was nice, sunny and we just enjoyed a great time together. Thanks Mo, and let's do that again soon :)Read more

    September 28, 2017 in Austria ⋅

28 of September. On this day we went to Sovana it was stuck to the side of the mountain. There was a rain forest at one end and a Vie Cave Etruscha. This was a narrow path that had hills on each side caves all around it and a small cold river flowing on the other side of the hill. As we went into one of the caves there was a sign on the sign it said watch out for boor and porcupines both witch can kill you. I saw a boor foot print and I picked up a porcupine the fell from a tree and said here is a porcupine. It was funny. Soon after our walk we had lunch and headed back to our castle on the hill.

    THE END!!!😃

    October 8, 2017 in Austria ⋅

Today after breakfast we headed off to a place called Mondsee (that means lake in German.) Half way to our Air BNB we stopped up a hill that had ice caves on it. It was cold, rainy and... cold. After we went past the ticket table, we had to walk up the equivalent of a 40 level sky scraper.

After a hour of walking and 3 minutes of sky car we got to the top. Fog was rising as we entered the cave. It felt like a cold shower. After one or two minutes of walking to the entrance we got to our English tour guide. As we went in the tour guide introduced himself, his name was "Johahnes" but when he said it in his German accent, it sounded like "your highness". After some time in the freezing cold cave we came to a stop where he told us to imagine some of the ice sculptures being animals, the only ice animals were a bear and a elephant.

As we walked by the animals we went in a long hall that was 25m tall and 88m long and at the end of the hall was the ashes of the person that found the cave. He always wanted to be berried at the end of the hall in the biggest ice cave in the world. So he was. (The man died in world war 1 as a soldier).

After the ice caves we walked down. When we got to our farm Air BNB, there were cows, cats, dogs and horses. Inside our house we settled in and met a cute cat I named Garfield. We took the cat down to the games room and played with the cat, played pool, ping pong and fusball. In the middle of playing ping pong another cat came in. I named him Felix because he looked like the cat from the ad. This cat jumped on us, hugged us and jumped on the tables while we were playing, chasing the ping pong balls off the table. The cats did not mind. Soon after, Garfield got mad that we were patting Felix more him. Garfield tried to attack Felix. Garfield ran away and came back the next day to get more love ❤️
