    May 16, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

It did not stop raining till late morning so we were trapped in our tent though busting for the toilet.
After a hearty breakfast, we set off on a hike in search of a plague that we had found the last time we were here that took both of as aback when we came across it.
We found it and the hike was magnificent.

  • Shannon National Park

    May 17, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It was beautiful day when we left home this morning. An hour away from the campsite, dark clouds seemed to gather. When we got to Shannon National Park campsite the heavens opened.
There was a frenzied attempt to find accommodation in Manjimup or Pemberton but to no avail.
We finally decided to brave the rain, and pitched our tent in record time. Also another first, we used our front flap of the tent as an awning to sit under instead of taking refuge in our car as we have done many times before.
Dinner was simple sandwich courtesy of my daughter's Mother's Day dinner leftovers. It was much too wet and we couldn't be bothered to set up the stove to cook.
A walk in the dark looking for the toilet, we chanced upon a fairy mushroom patch.
Since it's cold and wet and starless night, we are going to turn in early.

  • Lane Poole Falls

    May 17, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After reading from Life of Py and Long Ways Better that the planned hike of the Bib Track from Deeside Coast Road was flat and boring, we decided to do Lane Poole Falls instead.
On the way to Lane Poole, we made a stop at Snake Gully Lookout and Big Tree Grove, part of the stunning Great Forest Drive, lined with tall karri trees.
The 5km hobbit trail to the Falls was beautiful, but the falls itself a bit lacklustre. The trail was teeming with birdlife. A cacophony of different tweets, chirps and warbles accompanied us through the hour and a half.
Shannon campsite is huge. It it's very well facilitated with BBQs, flushing toilets and a shower that one needs to light a fire under the boiler to get hot water. Yesterday, a couple from Brisbane pulled in towing a boat. Yes, they towed said boat all through the centre of a Australia to Shannon National Park. They hope to eventually introduce the boat to water one day. In the meantime, they sleep in the boat when camping. The other couple in the campsite came from Victoria and has towed a caravan around Australia with a 2WD ute. They said that there were a few tracks they could not go on as they did not have a 4WD, but they managed very well with their 2WD. Very heartening news for us who would like to explore further in our Forrester.
    Walking mileage 6.31 km

  • Manjimup and Willow Springs campsite

    May 18, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

We decamped from Shannon National Park and had a nice cook's tour of Manjimup.
Then we had a lovely lunch in Manjimup at Hound and Hunter, a new place opened by David Coomer, the chef who also has a truffle farm. Delicious confit duck terrine with black truffles and duck and pork rillette.
Got to Willow Springs with plenty of time to set up camp. We are the only ones here tonight.

  • Hike to Donnelly River Village

    May 19, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

After a big breakfast we set out on a 22km hike from Willow Springs campsite to Donnelly River village and back on the Bibbilmun Track.
When we started the hike, it was freezing, however the undulating terrain soon warmed us up and it was lovely to hike in the karri forest. Ruby found out first bunny orchid on this trip.
Donnelly River Village was an old logging village and the general store served yummy burgers and cooked food.
After a yummy lunch and proper coffee, we headed back to the campsite. The return journey was hard and very tiring. We were glad to get back just before dark.
When we got back to the campsite, we weren't the only campers anymore.
There was a couple travelling from Victoria and a couple and their son from the UK.
Even though the couple from UK lit a roaring fire, we turned in early because we were exhausted.

  • Hike to Gregory Brook campsite

    May 20, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Yesterday we hiked south from our campsite, today we decided to hike north to Gregory Brook campsite 20km there and back from our campsite.
Very early on the hike, Ruby spotted another species of the bunny orchid.
Today's hike is not as difficult and the Gregory Brook campsite was really spiffy, newish and very clean. We stopped to have lunch there and headed back.
