    Three Rivers Petroglyph Site

Mogollon Indians lived here and created these rock carvings anytime between 200 BC and 1400 AD. Lots of bighorn sheep, masks… set in a beautiful landscape

    White Sands National Park

The sand is made of gypsum (Gips) that formed when shallow lakes evaporate every dry season, over millions of years… no sun today, but the white ones against the dark sky creates an incredible effect. As a complete contrast, I camp at a man-made lake tonight and now we do get a sunset.

    White sand to white snow

I capture the 30 minutes of sunshine of the day for another quick visit to White Sands. The next 5 hours I spent in Las Cruces, largest city in the area, in the library and for car maintenance. Then I decide to drive the scenic route to Silver City via the old mining town of Hillsboro - and end up in the snow. Not fun, but I made itもっと詳しく

It’s an almost 2 Hour Dr. for 60 km through very narrow and winding mountain roads to get to Gila Cliffs, ruins of ancient Indians. Fantastic landscape! This evening, I eat in the Buckhorn saloon, one of the most original old west saloons around.

    Driving Day

Lots of driving today as I leave New Mexico and travel back to Arizona. Definitely on the way home now, so to speak. On the way, I visit yet another small Ghost Town called Shakespeare. This was a very lawless place where they actually hanged people in the stagecoach station for lack of trees around, so at some point, they changed the name for marketing purposes. I also visit the Amerind Foundation, a museum for Indigenous Art and modern art. No photos allowed there, but the carpets of yellow flowers in the hills in that area were fantastic.

    Tonto NM / Lake Roosevelt

The next two days I spent north east of Phoenix in the area around Lake Roosevelt, the largest reservoir of water completely surrounded by Arizona. Time to relax on the campground at the lake, and I visit Tonto national monument, my last Cliff Dwellings for this trip. I really love the Sonora desert landscape, and the flowers were fantastic.

If this looks familiar, it is! One of the best hikes of my entire trip was up to Fremont Saddle and as I pass Phoenix anyways, I stopped for another day for a six hour hike in this fantastic landscape. First part as in November, up to the saddle, then I turn left instead of right and hike back via the lost mind trail and the wave cave. I met Amy, who trains for hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim in May in a day. You need to be very fit for that.! Driving towards Vegas the afternoon I stop in Rodeo town Wickenburg for a coffeeもっと詳しく

    Route 66

Just in case you didn’t know where I was… in Kingman and surrounds you are reminded a lot. This town really lives off the nostalgia, and they do it in a great way. I loved walking around in this otherwise not very interesting town. Before that, I stopped in chloride, a quirky mining town still very much alive. Guess what they mined here…

An engineering marvel still today, Hoover Dam them is very impressive. I walk the bridge, I walk the dam, and I take the tour to see the power plant and go inside the dam itself we got to look out of one of the ventilation shafts in the middle of the dam, that was quite cool. The Dam itself enabled the existence of the town of Las Vegas and feeds Los Angeles, San Diego and the entire southwest with water.

I drove a detour for the most scenic road from Las Vegas to death Valley. This way I enter from the south, driving up the death valley itself. First, you only see sand, then salt it, and then - THE LAKE. Yes, there’s still water at the lowest point in North America, Badwater. Hottest I had today was 34°, this night it git down to 7. I finished the day by on Artist’s Drive - they also lots of colors here.

Alabama Hills / Driving to the coast

Today I drove over 600 km to get to the coast, from desert to sea. A stop in the Alabama Hills, granite formations with a fantastic view of the Sierra Nevada. A short stop at Red Rock Canyon but the sun was all wrong. All in all a journey through climate zones: desert, high desert, lush grassy hills, Central Valley agriculture and oil fields, then more lush hills down to the ocean.

    Elephant Seals

I had plenty to drive up Highway 1, the famous coast Road up to the point where it was destroyed by a landslide two years ago today. But it was very foggy, so I spent a lot of time watching the elephant seals. It was very nice to watch the colony, this time of the year there are females changing their fur (molting) and juveniles, none of the big males with the characteristic trunk. Then I drive up to Ragged Point before heading inland towards the pinnacles and spending time in the library of the small town by of Soledad.

A wonderful day spent hiking in the Pinnacles, rough volcanic rock formations, unique in this area of rolling green hills and agriculture. The weather was perfect, lots of flowers, birds and great views. I hiked 22,8 km covered 933 vertical meters today, and every step was worth it.

Highway 1 Carmel - Santa Cruz

I had planned to drive down Highway one from Monterey for 60 km to where it is damaged by a land slide in 2022 - I wanted to see the famous Big Sur. But approaching the highway I learned that it is now blocked only 11 miles south of Carmel due to more landslides that happened earlier this month! This, and the fact that on a Saturday with great weather everything is completely overrun by people, forced several changes of plans on me. I stopped at several places in Garrapata State Park at the coast, had a seafood lunch in Carmel, then north towards San Francisco all the way to Santa Cruz. This seaside town has the only remaining historical amusement park (Boardwalk) on the West Coast, and a long pier.

The stretch of course line from Santa Cruz to San Francisco is beautiful, but not spectacular. I stop at another location to view elephant seals, Pigeon Point Lighthouse and Pebble Beach (semi-precious stones!) before making my way up to San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Bridge. I get my first taste of San Francisco while driving. Hills, houses like in England and power lines like in Romania… this city is unlike any other in the US, with the exception of New York.

I take the bus to downtown, then walk around the union Square area before making my way into Chinatown. This is really the most Chinese I’ve ever felt outside of China.! I climb the hill to Coit Tower, then the tower of views of the city. On the way down using the old fashioned Filbert Steps through a park-like area, I see a coyote!!! Apparently, coyotes have moved into towns like foxes in Germany.

Walking along the pier, I passed the pier for boats to Alcatraz and spontaneously ask if tickets are available. Yes they are, I take the next board to spend two hours on the infamous prison island. The cell block is the highlight, but there are a lot of buildings partly dating from the mid-1850s to prison administration buildings. The islands also serves as a bird sanctuary today.
