Serving Slovakia

Today, we continued to practice common idioms. Each table group also prepared a skit to illustrate how verb tense relates to the timing of actions. All the students seemed to have fun with it. After lunch, we watched the 4th segment of the movie Holes. More clues have now been revealed, so the students are excited to guess how the movie will end.

Stacy's boys worked on another art project where they made a poster for a local restaurant. They also wrote a new story based on a cartoon character. Their story was about Puss in Boots losing his boots in winter on a trip from Ohio to California. They also learned about pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.

We went to the grounds of a local Roman Catholic church for a picnic dinner that included homemade pizzas from a wood-fired oven. After dinner, Adrian taught us four Slovakian folk songs. It was another wonderful day in Martin, Slovakia. Czytaj więcej

Today, we finished the first week of class with our students. They created a funny skit that was themed on travel and business to demonstrate their knowledge of ten idioms. My group included three extra idioms and won a prize for being the most creative. We went for another coffee during our "walk and talk" and had a nice conversation about travel. In the afternoon, we finished watching Holes and had our final discussion group. Then we had a time of sharing gifts and saying hopeful goodbyes - that we would see each other again soon.

Stacy's class enjoyed watching their commercials even though they were a bit shy about their performances. On their "Walk and Talk," Benjamin insisted on treating her to ice cream, and the other boys gave her chocolate. After lunch, they had fun making and flying airplanes.

After class, Stacy and I stopped by Rasto's Adventure Sport store to do some shopping. I found a nice pair of sandals and Stacy found a hat for walking in warm weather.

In the evening, Stacy went to a party at the school celebrating the end of the VBS program. A gypsy band performed, and there was singing, dancing, and delicious food!

I was invited to join a group heading to a local brewery. We road electric scooters, which was a new and exciting experience for me. We all enjoyed delicious food and beer, but most of all, the conversation and friendship. I commented that I liked the brewery t-shirts being worn by the staff and was disappointed that they didn't sell them. I had a wonderful surprise when Anka presented me with a shirt. She knew the owner, called him, and he made a special trip to bring a shirt to the brew pub for me. It was such a kind and meaningful gesture! At the end of the evening, we rode our scooters home, but this time a bit more carefully after the festive celebration! Czytaj więcej
