  • Day -1: Arriving at St. Jean

    June 23, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

It’s my travel day, which took two days. I’m at “the foot of the pass” ( that’s what Pied de Port means) into the Camino. The little 1500 person village caters to the peregrinos. As I mentioned in the video, the essential lesson for the day was to make extra time for the unplanned. The travel went smoothly but only due to copious time planned for travel. It alleviated a great deal of travel stress driving to the airport, and when both flights were delayed, enough time to transfer. I’m hoping the stress free travel day (minus a slight panic that my international phone plan wouldn’t work to contact my airport transport to St. Jean - oh, because it’s NOT an international phone plan!! It’s a data plan only 🤷🏻) is an early sign that this will be a stress-free trip.

Although perhaps the better way to think about it is that when the inevitable stress arrives, notice it, and then deliberately let it go! 🤔

The goal is to just stay awake till 10 pm tonight to level-set the time difference.

  • Day 0: Morning in St Jean

    June 24, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

My morning stroll through old town.
Gratitude: cultural differences - they show me that there’s more than one path through life. And by extension, more than one way to our Lord. May I always be open to difference.

A wonderful leisurely breakfast at Hotel Central. Two couples were there separately eating breakfast. Both doing different walks that start and end here in St. Jean!

  • Day 0: To Be Known

    June 24, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Where was God today?: Being in a foreign place is both exciting and if I’m honest a bit daunting when I’m by myself. At about 2 PM today one of my good childhood friends, Jonathan Cerne, joined the trip. At that point everything else felt more comfortable. To have such a good, close friend who knows me so well and accepts me for who I am, share in this experience is a gift. Everything is experienced so differently now. Life is easier. I feel more confident. A good friend mirrors the comfort, peace, and joy that God provides.

After a few failed attempts at finding the correct time of mass, John and and I finally attended one where I received a pilgrims blessing. We spent time walking around the village. We had a wonderful dinner overlooking the river. We also hiked to the highest point in the village where an old military Barrick is that is established now as a secondary school.

    Tomorrow, the Pyrenees!

  • We Begin The Way of St. James

    June 25, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

This morning was brimming with excitement. I met at breakfast the first couple I had a conversation with about the Camino. They were from New Mexico and the woman, Paula gave me a Buen Camino bracelet and a patch for my backpack. Charles is her husband. They had just concluded a French Camino.

Jon and I stopped at the church in town. We each lit candles to start our trip. I immediately knew who I would be lighting my candle for- Mary. It is an understatement that without her love and support I would not be able to embark on this adventure. Mary has always been supportive of all my interests and passions. I’m truly grateful to be the recipient of her generosity time and again. Jon and I walked through the threshold, that officially launches the Camino. We have no idea what’s ahead but start off excited!

  • The Pyrenees!!!!

    June 25, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

The Pyrenees are no joke!!! Filled with beauty and steep, steep uphills! I literally kept singing The Price Is Right game Cliffhangers song the whooole way up- because it felt like Jon and I were that character in the game. 😆

We had a stunning day with beautiful sights, walking alongside cows, horses, and sheep. 60% of the day was uphill.

    Where’s the Food Truck??!

    June 25, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

At the Pilgrim office, the volunteer indicated that at about mile nine or 10 there would be a food truck before we move off the road onto the gravel path going over the Pyrenees. Jon and I plan to eat our lunch there with no snacks in our pack. lo and behold we arrive at the turn off and no food truck!!!

Having read the travel books, I was explicit to confirm with the volunteer, “the food truck will be there, right?“ She said yes. I was asking desperately to people in and around the area if they had seen the food truck or heard about a food truck being at the turn off. No indication from them whatsoever that truck existed. Jon couldn’t help but laugh at how funny and typical it must’ve sounded for an American to be asking for a food truck in a random spot in the Pyrenees.🤣

All the way to Roncevalles we joked about asking all Pellegrino’s if they’ve seen the mysterious missing food truck.

  • Roncesvalles: Debrief of Day 1

    June 25, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Jon said at one point, “Were we in St. John Pied de Port today?“ It felt like we were walking for a week. With zero food in our bellies minus a shared packet of Gu and a handful of almonds and Craisins from a compassionate pelegrino my body was pretty exhausted. That’s said, the very hilly training regiment of the last month really paid off. While walking over the Pyrenees was hard, it was doable.

I stumbled through a shower, made it downstairs for a delightful dinner and then packed it in for the night. What is in store for walking day number two?!

  • Gratitude for Leadership Roundtable

    June 26, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

I start my day today with gratitude for the organization I’ve spent the last 15 years of service - Leadership Roundtable. I feel as strongly today as I do for its mission to serve the leadership and management needs of our Church. I’ve had the privilege of seeing so many facets of the Church and hopefully strengthen it for its all important mission - the transformation of our world into a peaceful and just society where everyone lives in sacred communion with all creation. I lit two (electric 😆) candles for the staff, whom without I would not be able to have this experience. Thank you for all you are doing to cover for me while I’m away.

When I lit the candles in the chapel of Santiago two Dutch volunteers came into the chapel. I snuck a quick video of them singing, so beautiful. They quickly snatched me up and brought me inside to sing briefly. Apparently there is an agreement with some outfit in Holland to send volunteers here on a rotating basis. One of them welcomed me yesterday as Jon and I entered. She was superb at her job!

17 miles to a quaint little hotel in AKERRETA. The location in movie, The Way where the alburgue owner dreamed of being a bull fighter. I read that Martin Sheen stayed at this location throughout the shooting of the movie. If it’s good enough for Martin Sheen…
