      Day 63

      Durch's ländliche Ontario nach Ottawa

      Beim Frühstück: Schnee aus grau verhangenem Himmel. Drum herum die dunkle Natur und der düstere Elephantensee. Wetter macht Stimmung.In diesem Fall wollen wir bald weiter.
      Wir fahren meistens nach Google Maps Routen.
      Manchmal haben wir Alternativen gewählt, um z.B.
      lange Autobahnabschnitte zu umgehen. Besonders bei kürzeren Etappen.
      So können wir in aller Ruhe etwas vom Leben abseits der größeren Städte sehen.
      Es ist in Kanada genau umgekehrt zu China. Galten dort Städte mit 2 Mio Ew. als eher klein , sind hier
      Communities mit 2000 Ew. größere Gemeinden.
      So kamen wir heute über viele Land - und Nebenstrassen auch über Mississipi Mills ( kanadischer ! Mississipi River). Ein entzückendes Städtchen mit 12 Tsd. Ew. und einem
      malerischen ,an Neu England erinnernden , Ortszentrum. Grosses Gewerbegebiet als Hinweis auf Zentralfunktionen.
      Die Besiedlung auf dem Land geht entlang der Strassen. Selbst in dichten Waldregionen finden sich rechts und links der Strasse in größeren Abständen immer wieder Briefkästen und Namensschilder.
      Die zugehörigen Häuser sind weit zurück gesetzt und kaum zu sehen. Das Hinterland bleibt leer, Natur, unbesiedelt. Wie wird hier das tägliche Brot verdient?
      Fahren in die nächste größere Stadt? Täglich?
      Landwirtschaftliche Betriebe sind hier in Ontario eher
      selten.
      Ähnliche Zersiedlung auch um z. B. Ottawa. Der Siedlungsgürtel reicht nach unserem Urteil bis 50km im Umkreis der eigentlichen Stadt.
      Wir kommen bei Sonne und blauem Himmel in Ottawa an, aber die Wolken folgen uns wieder.
      Dann müssen wir nach MAPS zu unserem CG aber 30km nach Süden : wieder weg von Ottawa fahren.
      Der CG erweist sich als äusserst großflächiges, sehr gepflegtes Areal. Auch ein Golf Übungsplatz ist integriert.
      Einer der Besitzer wohnt auf dem CG. Er erklärt uns, dass sie 140 Campsites nebst entsprechenden Einrichtungen bewirtschaften. Das Gelände selber ist aber doppelt so groß.
      Er war als Soldat der Can. Air Force 8 Jahre in Deutschland stationiert. 5 Jahre in Lahr und Baden- Baden ( oh Casino, Asparagus!) sowie 3 Jahre in Soest.
      Morgen wollen wir nach Ottawa und die Stadt ein wenig kennenlernen.      Read more

      Day 16

      A visit to Almonte

      Sally took us to Almonte near Carleton Place this morning. It's a pretty and well kept town way out in the middle of nowhere. We strolled around taking in the sights, stopped off for a spot of lunch and an ice cream, then headed back to Carlton Place for a relaxing afternoon.Read more

      Day 14

      Day 14 - Cottage

      Today we had another lazy day at the cottage with another paddle on the lake and a swim.

      The mosquitoes were out to dinner and their favourite restaurant was me! After lunch I had a nap in the cottage to have a break from the sun and a break from being the local food court!

      David stayed out on the dock and had a near-death experience involving a plastic deck chair, two towels and a bikini top! A sudden gust of wind blew said items into the lake and not wanting to lose someone else’s property David jumped into the lake to save them but very soon discovered that you can’t swim if your hands are full. I woke up to the gurgling sounds of David spluttering as his whole life flashed before him. With my sympathetic help (?) and an oar, all the items were safely rescued and after a nice hot shower David was none the worse for wear.

      After so much excitement, we headed back to Carleton Place. In the evening we dropped Sally off to her Dragon Boat practice and headed out for dinner. We had a lovely meal at the Grand Hotel. We sat on the patio and I tried my first Caesar – the Canadian equivalent of a Bloody Mary, but made with Clamato Juice. Not sure which version I enjoy most as they are both yummy!

      Murphys Point

      Wir nähern uns dem Ende unserer Reise, aber ein paar Parks liegen noch auf dem Weg. Bisher haben die sich als wirklich verlässliche Möglichkeit für uns erwiesen in ungestört zu übernachten, um diese Jahreszeit sind kaum Leute unterwegs und viele Parks sind etwas abgelegen, ohne nervige Anwohner in der Nähe. So auch Murphys Point, den man erst nach 30 min Schotter und winzigen Landstraßen erreicht. Hier ist absolut niemand außer Mücken und nach einer sehr ruhigen Nacht wollen wir am Morgen den Park erkunden. Es gibt hier eine alte Mine, die noch gut erhalten sein soll und ein wenig für Besucher aufbereitet ist, was wir uns natürlich nicht entgehen lassen wollen. Es nieselt den ganzen Tag immer wieder, was uns erneut ein bisschen zauberhafte und mysteriös gruselige Stimmung im Wald beschert die sich noch steigert, als wir in den Baumwipfeln kleine zusammengekugelte Lebewesen entdecken, die sich später als Stachelschweine herausstellen (wer hätte gedacht, das die auf Bäumen leben...).
      Als wir dann die Minenreste erreichen, sind wir zwar etwas durchnässt aber unserem Abenteurergeist kann das nichts anhaben und wir können von der verwunschenen Atmosphäre kaum genug bekommen.      Read more

      Day 10

      Day 10 - Kingston to Carleton Place

      Today we had another look around Kingston during daylight hours.

      We took the trolley bus tour around the city so as not to miss out on any of the main attractions.

      It’s a beautiful city with lots to explore. We only just touched the surface, but we were able to get a feel for the place, before heading off to our next stop - Carleton Place, via the cottage on Lake Christie in Perth to drop in on Philip and Christine to surprise them for a quick drink and a catch up. The Union Jack had already been raised in readiness for our visit!

      Then on to Carleton Place to meet up with Sally and Tom at their house. Was great to see them again - albeit briefly as they had left a friends wedding to let us in.

      As they were returning to the party in the evening, Shirley and Geoff drove over to join us for dinner. They took us to a lovely restaurant in the town called The Black Tartan. A lovely meal with great company followed by a drive-by tour of the surrounding area from Shirley then back to the house for a much-needed early night!      Read more

      Merrickville

      Ein schöner Ausflug. Merrickville ist ein schöner kleiner Ort. Als "historische Sehenswürdigkeit" wird eine Art Wehrturm aus dem 19. Jahrhundert präsentiert, der die Kanalschleuse vor US-amerikanischen Angriffen schützen sollte. Nette Geschäfte und kleine Cafés und Restaurants entlang der Mainstreet. Hille hat sich Ohrringe und eine neue (kleine) Handtasche gekauft. Aus original kanadischem Leder.Read more

      A day at the Cottage

      Had a fab day at the cottage today. After the sunrise we went canoeing, Sally, Shirley and Geoff headed over for lunch then we went swimming, followed by another outing in the canoe.

      Day 14

      Day 12 Christie Lake Cottage

      August 14, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Christine came over to meet us at Sally’s on Monday morning and we followed her over to the cottage. What a wonderful, magical place to be! The cottage is literally situated on the edge of Christie Lake, a natural body of water situated just outside of Perth.

      Christine cooked us a wonderful tea of chicken kebabs on the bbq, served with fresh corn on the cob - picked that morning. The difference with the sweet corn from what we have at home was considerable!! Huge great big cobs with a lovely deep yellow colour.

      After dinner Christine took us out on the lake - Christine took out her paddle board and David and I shared the canoe - we didn’t do too badly considering we’ve only ever rowed as individuals before and David being left handed and me being right handed made for some interesting manoeuvres!!

      Christine left after our trip on the lake – David and I were so shattered after the fresh air we crashed early and had a great night, falling asleep to the sound of the cicadas in the trees around the cottage.      Read more
