Smaller towns... what is it?

As we look back over our travels we begin to see a few patterns. Always heading to colder climates; liking independent travel; searching for the quirky and unusual [especially in coffee shops, gift stores and architecture]; often drawn to smaller towns.

Let’s explore the magnetism to smaller towns. A few communities spring to mind around British Columbia and Alberta. Fernie, Princeton, Revelstoke, Waterton, Hope - all seemed to fit the criteria of acceptability in our minds.

We found communities that were proud of themselves; had enough uniqueness to make them was noticeable; weren't shy of speaking about their qualities; did things with a degree of excellence we admired; and finally, were friendly and wanted to serve, knowing that part of their existence comes from us, the visiting guest.

I don't know what things you use to judge how you travel, but we find ourselves much more fulfilled when we recognise things we do or don't like, and trust what we gravitate to is what is meant to be!

Okanagan Valley - das Südtirol Kanadas

Heute gibt es gar nicht so viel zu erzählen. Wir starten früh in Kamloops, nach einer unruhigen Nacht mit viel Zuggehupe. Kurz teuer getankt (1,31C$), Kaffee bei Tim Hortens und ab gehts Richtung Peachland (ja, so heißt hier eine Stadt und es gibt hier tatsächlich Pfirsiche). Dort hüpfe ich in den erfrischenden Okanagan Lake (hier ist es im Kontrast zu den Rockies wieder extrem heiß) und über Penticton zum Ziel, dem 'Spotted Lake'. Leider ist dieser grad nicht erreichbar und von der ferne nicht sehr spektakulär. Bilder im Internet zeigen zahlreiche unterschiedliche Farbkombinationen des zahlreiche unterschiedliche Mineralien enthaltenen Sees. Bei den Ureinwohneren Kanadas ist der See ein heiliger Ort.

Unser Ausflug war dennoch ein Erfolg. Wir decken uns mit frisch geernteten Aprikosen, Kirschen, Blaubeeren und Säften ein, gönnen uns am ersten Tag nach der Darmsanierung ein Eis und erfreuen uns der wunderschönen Landschaft des Okanagan Valleys, dem Südtirol Kanadas, wie ich es nenne. Die (Wein-)Berge, das Klima - sehr ähnlich wie Südtirol, gleich kommen wir nach Naturns ;-)

Unser Zeltplatz ist super-idyllisch und wir beobachten dir Weißkopfseeadler, die hier am Fluss ihr Nest mit einem Jungen haben.Read more

Just about 3 hours east of Vancouver lays Princeton. I would describe it as sleeping beauty. Not to much going on there, but perfect to get away from the city and see the stars.
