      J50 - De Split à Hvar

      April 11 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Very wet ride

      September 9 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We definitely got the weather window wrong. It absolutely pelted rain, and we were completely soaked before taking shelter in Jelsa. The delicious tomato soup and best cappuccino of the trip warmed us nicely. We then had a glorious coastal ride back to Stari Grad.Read more

      Fahrradtour

      September 10 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Read more

To Bol and hop to Jelsa

      July 10 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

To make the best of a bad situation, we rode out in the wee hours of the morning. We were awake anyway, and maybe we could escape the midday heat. We dusted off the spiders and rode out to climb up and cross the hill to get to the other side of the island.

It was already hot at 8 am, but the shadows were still long to ride in from time to time. This landscape is just rocks and scrub and olive trees and spider webs. We climbed up several hundred meters, with Kiran feeling his legs out of form. We finally reached the top and could enjoy a beautiful downhill ride with the splendid blue sea popping into and out of view as we rolled to Bol.

Bol has the famous golden horn cape beach, the 'symBol of the Adriatic'. It looks interesting on the map with a long protruding tongue of land. On the ground, it was full of sunbathers and parasailing and thai massages. We swam a bit and found shade under the trees to nap a little.

Later we went to Bol port to find a boat to Jelsa on the adjacent island of Hvar. Yes, we did play catch in the beach water waiting at the port. In Jelsa, we found a guest room with air conditioning. Tonight, we sleep cool and comfy and only slightly smelly, like kings!

      Première nuit étoilée ✨

      April 11 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Read more

      Sveta Nedjelja and Zavala

      May 11 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

After seeing another snake from our car on our way to an Olive oil tasting, we decided to spend the afternoon on the other side of the island (which is more coastal 😅) and hopefully get away from them 🙈.... We were rewarded with beautiful and empty beaches and coastal paths and the best Pizza in a long time 😅. The tunnel to get to the other side was a bit special though (light is way too overrated, right 😅).Read more

    • Day 8

      Hvar to Cavtat

      October 19, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

We woke to a very different view from our hotel room... It was very windy and had been raining. I decided I'd still attempt a run and was surprised when I got outside to find that it was still quite warm, and very humid.

When I returned from my run we headed for breakfast and then checked out. We drove about 20 minutes to a small fishing village called Jelsa and stopped for a quick coffee before continuing our journey all the way along the island of Have to Sucuraj, where we were catching a ferry back to the mainland.

The roads in y the island were well maintained but quite narrow and instead of hedges either side, there was often a drip of a few feet into the field below; the drive to Sucuraj took about an hour and we joined the queue for the ferry. The sea looked a little bit rough but after cramming on far more vehicles than I thought might be possible we still departed on time.

The crossing was a little bit choppy and it was very windy but we arrived on the mainland without incident and began the drive back to Dubrovnik which took about 2 hours.

Our hotel for the evening was a further 20km from Dubrovnik and just a 15 minute drive to the airport. The fishing town of Cavtat is pretty and had a cluster of hotels. By the time we arrived it was after 4pm and so after check in we went for a few drinks and some cards at the hotels bar, overlooking the water... Fortunately the bar was covered and so we were not affected by the odd light rain and watched as the light faded.

We had a quick shower then wandered in to the town and selected a restaurant from the navy that were offering food. The food was lovely and by the time we had finished it was gone 10pm so it was time to return to our hotel for bed!

    • Day 21–25

      Tent with a view

      September 25, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We land on Hvar in Stari Grad, the north harbour, at 17h30. The light is superb. After a short ride along the only flat area of the island, among old dry stone walls, vineyards, and olive tree plantations, we find an absolutely ace camping spot. Views of moon- and sun rise, one terrace above a swim in the sea.

As luck has it, our insides chose this moment to go on strike, in alternance. We end up spending three days of hmm... recovering, in this heaven.

We manage a day tour to the top of the island, discovering a 270 degrees viewpoint on the sea. We find old dwellings, igloo-like shelters of limestone, built by shepherds/farmers living off sheep and goats, figs, olive oil, wine and honey. An old village with arches and stone roofs is being restored.

To move to our next target, Korcula Island, we need to cross the very top of the Island. Part of this road was build by the French in Napoleonic times, and reveals more of the original agricultural organization.

Day 35 -Trogir to Jelsa (Hvar)

      September 3, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

It took me a long time to pack my stuff and get ready for the ride this morning, probably also because I had coffee with Jens and Mimi and chatted with other neighbours that were curious about my trip.😅 I also wasn't keen on the ride from Trogir to Split via the mainland, there's just an aweful amount of traffic on the main road and as soon as I would go off it (like I did with Mali), road conditions would be terrible. 😅 So instead I took a different route along the coast of the island and a ferry to Split. When arriving at the ferry harbour in Slatine, only few people and two bikers from Italy were waiting already. I wasn't sure whether it was possible to take the bike on the ferry, neither were the Italians. More and more people arrived and we got a little worried. 😅 But it turned out to be fine, it was just ridiculously crowded and certainly overloaded. 😀 On the pier in Split a French couple with two children (maybe around 4 and 5) approached me, asking where I'm going. Turns out they are also bikepackers on a sabbatical who travel with their kids on tandems for a year. 😅 We exchanged numbers and I might see them again in Albania. 😊
Arriving in Split around 1pm I went straight for decathlon since I needed some chain oil and a new drinking bottle. After that, I booked a ferry ticket to Stari Grad on Hvar island (5pm departure, no earlier one available) at the terminal and had around two hours left to stroll around Split while phoning with a friend. It's a nice city but also pretty crowded. The ferry ride to Stari Grad took around 1.5 hours, it was raining during the drive and gotten a little cold, so I stayed inside and read while charging my phone. It was also about to get dark when I arrived at 6:30pm but I wanted to get to Jelsa (around 10km away) still since there were lots of campgrounds there. For the first time, I had to put my lights on for cycling. I thought about wild camping, there were many potential spots but it was already a little too late and dark to be sure about the spot. The route I planned on taking going past barking street dogs that were running around, so I decided to stay on the main road (more elevation..😑).
When I arrived at the camp the reception was closed already. So I asked a woman camping nearby and she said to just set up the tent anyways and tell them in the morning, which I did. It was luckily no problem at all. 😊 I showered and finally cooked some dinner before going to bed, I was really starving. 😅
