      Tabor

      Wooded, shady goodness.

      July 23, 2023 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Proper fill up at breakie and then onto the serious stuff - getting out of Prague. Initial SATNAV message to start off informed of 14 climbs for the day. Nice to know. So lots of climbing & in Prague lots of traffic lights - slow progress. All went by fairly uneventfully - stopped at a couple of supermarkets - sponge their WiFi & try and gauge lunch stops, which works if Google can estimate the route. It did not. Still picked up some cereal bars & bananas. Stopped at Konopiste Castle, 25 miles in. Nice place - bugger to get a photo of - too many trees. Not that the forested nature of Czechia is bad. With high 20's and lots of climbing the shade from the trees and the wind were helping. From the castle there was a good 10 miles of really busy road - relief to get off but hillier off it. Also no towns or villages to speak of so lunch was likely to be cereal bars and bananas. Water was the problem. Resorted to chancing a hand pump. In haste the output wasn't checked & when eventually needed, it was a little metallic in taste. Back on the main road & almost on the motorway - quick u-turn. Took in a petrol station for sustenance & the water tipped out looked decidedly brown. Hoping it was rust. We'll see how that affects me. Mostly downhill to Tabor. Hostel found easily - warden not so much. Buzzer & phone call both seemed unsuccessful but eventually she rocked up. Cleaned up & explored the old town - v pretty.Read more

      Tabor

Precious company, delicious food & wine

      June 5, 2018 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today, was a very good one. After 11 hours of deep sleep in the tent, we cycled up and down and up and down and visited the czech warmshower host Jan. He showed us around the beautiful city Tábor that was built in year 1500 by people who fought against catholic church from their fort. Therefore you find an ancient castle here surrounded by rivers.
On the road, we met the Austrian cyclist Tom who joined us for lunch and later for a beer ;) Maybe we see him again in Vienna.

Unneccessary knowlegde from a visit in the chocolate and marzipan museum of Tábor: A cacao plant has up to 6000 flowers! But only 20-30 cacao pods. They need to be harvested by hand with a special machete to see if they are ripe enough to be harvested.
After that, they need to be peeled and dried under banana leaves to start the fermentation process. During fermentation, the bitterness leaves the cacao beans. After that, it can be roasted and used to produce chocolate. (wi)

    • Day 86

      Tábor

      July 2, 2017 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We did not intend to be in the Czech Republic right now but the weather and a subsequent cancellation by our alternate host in Germany thwarted our original plans.

We had some German campsites planned and then we found out about weather warnings for severe thunderstorms. Didn't quite fancy putting the tent up in the pouring rain and not being able to cook for ourselves for the next few days. We have a gas cooker which is fab but not really user friendly in bad weather, something that we found out in Austria! So we found somewhere on Airbnb in Germany but the host cancelled the day before we were due to leave..

As places in Germany are really not that cheap we decided to head the other way and ended up here in the Czech Republic. Tabor in particular as we found a nice looking place with a decent price tag.

Tabor does not feature in any of our guides but we have enjoyed our stopover here. The best thing to do here according to Tripadvisor was the Hussite museum. It was actually quite interesting and we got to try on 12kg of chainmail and also had a tour in some underground passages with a guided tour in Czech...

Yesterday we went into the town again - to visit the botanical gardens - as we were running out of things to do and trying to help our budget. It was a Saturday afternoon and it was completely deserted. Appears that everything closes at 12pm and everyone actually disappears. We first thought we had entered the zombie apocalypse and felt safe when we saw a hunting shop where we could steal guns if the zombies appeared. But we eventually saw one human gardener mowing the lawn.

The apartment is great and Stuart has been able to do some actual cooking :) so I am pleased.
