      Rando au boiling lake

      Profitant d'un jour de repos, on fonce en bus à Roseau puis à Laudat pour voir pour le croire, un lac bouillant. Enfin une randonnée un peu plus sérieuse car il nous faut 3h pour atteindre le fameux lac. Mais ne nous precipitons pas, commençons par le commencement et parlons de la marche à pied qu'on a faite pour monter en haut.
      La rando commence dans la forêt. Avec un peu d'altitude cette dernière se découvre et nous arrivons sur une pseudo crête avec une vue dégagée de part et d'autre qui nous emnene doucement au point culminant de notre randonnée. Ce point culminant nous offre quand à lui une vue à 360° splendide. On voit à la fois l'océan et la mer.
      La redescente nous emmène à la vallée de la désolation ~ musique angoissante ~. C'est un petit vallon parcouru par une petite rivière dont les roches sont colorées, par le soufre et le fer, de 1000 nuances de rouge, de jaune et de gris. On peut voir des bulles remontant à la surface de la rivière, gage que nous etions sur la bonne route pour le boiling lake.
      Nous avons atteint notre objectif à l'heure pour manger. Une épaisse vapeur d'eau s'en dégage, sur les bord on peut voir des bulles et au centre l'eau bouillonne autant qu'une casserole pour cuire des pâtes.
      Après une longue pause, on est prêt à prendre le chemin du retour, qui est malheureusement un simple demi-tour et pas une boucle.
      C'était une super escapade dans les montagnes dominicaises où nous n'avons croisé que deux groupes de personnes.

      Si bouillante ! Mais on ne sait pas vraiment si les bulles sont dues à l'ébullition ou aux échappements de soufre

      Wanderung auf Dominica

      Die Überfahrt nach Dominica verläuft reibungslos. Der Kurs ist gut und wir erreichen Dominica sehr früh, so dass wir noch bis zur Bucht von Mero, mittig auf Dominica, segeln. Beim Abendessen beschließen wir am nächsten Tag eine Wanderung zu unternehmen. Wir stehen früh auf, da wir noch mit Bussen zum Ausgangspunkt fahren müssen. Um 10 Uhr kommen wir im kleinen Ort Laudat an und beginnen unsere Wanderung durch den Regenwald Dominicas zum Boiling Lake. Wir befinden uns auf 800 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. Es ist merklich kühler, als an der Küste. Es beginnt zu regnen. Leider haben wir keine langen Sachen, geschweige denn Regensachen, dabei. Wir beschließen schneller zu gehen. Auf einem Bergkamm kommen uns starke Windböen entgegen. Vom Gipfel des Berges Nicholls geht es bergab. Aufgrund des Regens ist der Boden sehr matschig und rutschig. Zum Valley of Desolation geht es steil bergab und wir müssen mehrmals klettern. Hier unten brodeln die Flüssen und es stinkt nach Schwefel. Zum Boiling Lake ist es nicht mehr weit. Wir überqueren noch 2 Bäche und klettern ein steiles Stück hoch. Für die 5 km haben wir in 2,5 Stunden gebraucht. Oben angekommen stehen wir am Rand des riesigen Kochtopfes. Der See dampft so stark, dass wir nur manchmal das brodelnde Wasser sehen. Nach einer kurzen Essenspause treten wir den Rückweg an. Im Desolation Valley machen wir noch einen kleinen Badestopp in einem natürlichen Pool mit warmen Quellwasser, bevor wir das anstrengenste Wegstück angehen. Als andere Wanderer kommen und ebenfalls in den Pool wollen, ziehen wir uns wieder an und setzten unseren Rückweg fort. Es fängt an zu regnen und auf dem steilen Stück befinden sich keine Bäume, die uns Schutz bieten. Je höher wir kommen, desto mehr mischen sich starke Windböen zum Regen. oben am Gipfel haben wir es geschafft. Hier ist anscheinend die Wetterscheide. Es ist trocken und windet nicht mehr so arg. Gegen 16 Uhr kommen wir in Laudat an und erwischen zeitnah einen Minibus, der uns zurück zur Hauptstadt bringt. Hier steigen wir in einen anderen Bus nach Mero um. Am Strand essen und trinken wir noch eine Kleinigkeit in den einheimischen lokalen, bevor wir zu unserem Boot übersetzen.Read more

      Hike to the Boiling Lake I

      The following day Mike, Lisa, and I met our guide, Martin, at 6:30 AM ! Poor poor Mike, he doesn’t fair well in the mornings (but he did well that day….). Martin drove us an hour South near Rosseau. We started the hike on a well maintained path, though, still an arduous climb up. All four of us were breathing hard as we climbed right into the clouds.DSC_0543 Extreme drop offs were on either side of us and when there was a break in the trees and brush, jets of wind funneled over the cliffside. The force of which, nearly knocked your body back. I looked back several times unsure if Lisa would fly away. We suddenly found ourselves on the summit about 3,000 feet up but with zero view due to the clouds. I took a picture but it didn’t come out 😉 (sorry, that was Kirsten humor…) We then, began to decline over a ridge into what opened up to be the first of the two calderas! It was fantastically green and the rocks held so much iron. These calderas are thought to have been created 40,000 and 35,000 years ago.Read more

      We cautiously climbed over narrow muddy footholds that descended into the valley of desolation. This was super neat! As in, when I looked up to see the valley of desolation, I had truly NEVER seen anything like it in my life. I saw pictures online but it didn’t do it justice. The gaseous ground, did, reminded me of a scene in the cat/dog movie of Milo & Otis (kudos to anyone who remembers that childrens movie. I watched that movie on my Dads lap in 17 Rising Lane Long Island NY when I was a kid). The smell of sulfur was so strong you could taste it and when the wind changed and the steam rolled into your face you could feel and taste it. Joy… Mike and I wore our chaos sandals so our feet could feel the heat of the earth beneath us… which I found a little…. intimidating. The earth was cakey and almost sponge-like in some areas. In the stream some people have been known to cook a raw egg…. I didn’t see the appeal in that.
      The photo of all the steam is a fumarole, a crack, which gas escapes. Since the last major eruption was 800 AD… I’m not terribly concerned.

      Anyway. Another great sight was the fact we saw a black stream… a lot of them in fact. Created out of basalt. The other streams of green, grey, and white… I’m less sure of but hot dang! they sure are cool looking.      Read more

      We passed a few hot springs which were very inviting and yet still maintained that lingering sulfur smell. And once we had hiked over mountains and traversed hot rivers we arrived at the second largest boiling lake in the world….. Boiling Lake.Read more

      Yes, it boils, yes, you should not fall into it and no, it’s not always full. Apparently this decade it’s higher than usual (in 1988 it stopped boiling and dropped by 29 feet). I find it interesting to say “usual” because the scientists don’t actually know how deep the lake is. There are steep walls packed by loose rock. The edge of the lake is a mixture of pumice and clay. It’s said to be about 200 degrees F. and it only gets hotter towards that grey blue middle, bubbling like a witches cauldron. We ate lunch here then said our farewells to the boiling lake. Our return hike was far clearer and provided us with beautiful surrounding vistas. We also passed other hikers on our return. We were the first to arrive and enjoyed the lake all to ourselves.Read more

      Wir wandern auf dem Boeri Lake Trail durch den Regenwald und sind wieder alleine. Sehr beeindruckend. Bis zum Ziel schaffen wir es nicht. Der Weg ist zu gefährlich, alles ist äußerst rutschig und wir brechen deshalb die Wanderung ab.Read more
