    Day 1: Journey to Heathrow

    29. maj 2017, England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

After being kindly dropped at York station by taxi driver Dom, we got on the coach excited and eager to start our adventure! Emma chose the best seats...ones at the back next to the toilets that didn't recline. Emma slept like a log. It took Gill approximately 20 minutes to feel travel sick, resolved by a breath of fresh air at Woodall services and some chewing gum. Emma thought a hot cross bun with cheese might help... Gill questioned 'Who's idea was it to have a curry before a 6 hour coach trip?!' At Heathrow we were first to check in, and currently sat at the gate admiring our home for the next 11 hours. Let the adventure begin! Gill & Em xLæs mere

  • Day 2: Arrival at Hong Kong Airport

    30. maj 2017, Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

A calm arrival at the airport, much quieter than expected - not complaining! Very efficient transfers via train and bus. Great flight - lots of nice free food, drinks and films, the time flew by! Hotel maintenance means no shower yet, so having a smelly wander around to get to know the city! Gill & Em xLæs mere

  • Day 2: In bed by 4.30 - wild students!

    30. maj 2017, Hong Kong ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Successful smelly wander this afternoon. Struck by the antithesis of a beautiful nearby park, which was overlooked by impressive towering skyscrapers. First glimpse of some intriguing meats, fruits and live animals at a street market too; and very excitedly found what we describe as 'an OT shop' next door to hotel. Also impressed with how quiet and clean the city is. Exhausted...fell asleep on park bench so thought it best to head back to hotel. Both been mostly awake for last 3 days...Gill the last 3 weeks looking forward to waking up refreshed and ready to start the tour! Gill & Em xLæs mere

  • Day 3: Boarder Crossing - HK to Yangshuo

    31. maj 2017, Kina ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Woke up bright and early after 13 hours blissful uninterrupted sleep. Met our travel buddy Marissa and our first guide Rosanna. Took the tram up Victoria peak where we all enjoyed fantastic views of Hong Kong peninsula and breakfast. Caught a series of buses and the metro to the Chinese border, and caught the fastest bullet train in Asia (300km/h). Gill was very impressed how clean the stations were. Emma was very impressed with her purple potato crisps.

Marissa has also been a very knowledgeable additional guide specialising in Chinese economics and random facts (such as the difference between pirates and pirateers!)

We now have to get used to squat toilets! Gill managed to pee without getting her feet wet! Emma was excited at the prospect of toning her bum over the next month.

The drive from Guilin to Yangshuo was long, but taking in the mountainous green scenery of Guanxi region kept us mesmerised.

From Sally (our Yangshuo guide) we learned that Yangshuo's trade is 50/50 tourism and farming, mostly growing oranges and mandarins. Also due to tectonic plate movement creating underground rivers, a subway system isn't possible here.

Walked through the array of flashing lights, live music, sizzling street food to enjoy our first proper Chinese meal at 'Lucy's Place'. Gill had cashew nut chicken, Emma had clay pot egg plant with "pork".

    Goodnight! Gill & Em x

  • Day 4: Yangshuo

    1. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Breakfast on the roof terrace followed by a fascinating wander around a local Chinese food market to buy ingredients for the cooking class. Saw an array of sights and sounds: giant courgettes and cinnamon, 1 year old salted eggs, live albino rabbits, fish and cats, not so live dog.

Learned to cook Chinese style with another tour group of people from London and the Netherlands, followed by meeting our 4th group member 'Northern' Jordan from Castleford. Then, a beautiful bike ride down the Yulong river and bamboo river rafting.

In the evening met some friendly Chinese students studying English and business. It all started with one student having the courage to come over and start the conversation; by the end we were all laughing and chatting, and they were keen to improve their English.

Finished the night with some live music and a gin and tonic on a very uncomfortable bar stool and Emma's skirt was lifted up by a Chinese boy...he was only around 4 years old so will let him off this time!

Final note of the day: peanuts don't grow on trees.

  • Day 5: Yangshuo and yonder...

    2. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Today Gill sounds like shes been on a massive bender due to a sore throat. Emma's having a hair disaster. Gill bought a mango smoothie...with kidney beans on top - local delicacy?! After a lazy morning we hiked up Moon Hill (.com). Gill took pity on an elderly Chinese lady selling postcards who hikes to the top daily - probably same age as Gill but looked about 94.

Then we were awestruck by the massive Goldwater Caves 'the only cave mud bath/ hot spring in China'. We enjoyed getting to know our travel companions more intimately in the mud baths then relaxed in the hot springs. We were assured that Jordan's Delhi belly was controlled in the mud bath...not that we'd have known otherwise!

Delicious street food stir fry for tea - selected our chosen meat and veggies then they were cooked in front of us. Learned that it's rude to stand your chopsticks up in your rice.

Went to see the cormorant fishing with another group including an English girl who claimed to be called 'lettuce'. It was nothing like the HSBC advert. A noisy engine thundered in the background, as the birds were yanked out of the water and made to vomit several fish - not as glamorous or tranquil as expected. You live and learn. Emma got to hold a bird afterwards though - was very beautiful. Gill was having non of the smelly beast on her shoulder.

Having been invited by a group of Chinese business/English students to a rooftop party, we decided to go along and enjoy the free beer and games. They were being assessed by their tutors to converse in English with 'foreigners'. Of course we joined in the drinking games and won a lantern and hair accessory between us.

Ended the night with a boogie and deep fried stuffed 'thing' from a street food stand. Another great day!

  • Day 6: Final day in Yangshuo

    3. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    The health picture so far:
-Gill has 3 bites 0 sunburn 1 very painful backside day, tonsilitis and a pulled neck muscle.
-Emma has 31 bites 0 sunburn (thanks to Gill) 1 bad poo following street food. No Imodium necessary yet...

During our time in Yangshuo, we've been photographed by many Chinese people - they love selfies almost as much as Emma.

Sorted out our Monopoly money and budgeted for rest of trip. Emma gone over budget already...will endeavour to stick to planned budget - there's a first time for everything. Gill's budgeting non existent but did pack helpful paper clips.

Choosing snacks in supermarket - dried meats, pickles and preserves, everything unfamiliar. Took a gamble with a few...will report on outcome.

Set off in minibus to Sally's village (Translated as 'Dragon's Heel). Driving in Yangshuo is a different experience altogether - people drive on the right side (not that you'd know about it) and pull out without hesitation. Makes journeys much more exciting.

En route stopped at Farmers market to buy fruit and had some great freshly made dumplings. Captured famous view of Li river as pictured on the 20 Yuan note.

Jordan has been very quiet today as his bowels are having a sumo fight with the street food and exhausted. Soldiered on to village with us. Hoping waffles, McDonald's and 25 hours sleep on the next train will help.

Then enjoyed a Tour of Sally's village: views of misty mountains, farmland and fruit trees. Learned lots about Chinese culture and life. Called at her home for Chinese tea. Houses in village only had plumbing since 2005, laundry still done in communal spring water source. Huge 90's TVs in each house. Then to Sally's uncle's house for a delicious meal. We noticed that decoration and home comforts are secondary to function, whole families live in houses as they're being built.

Great day was had...until Sally's mum mortally offended Gill by guessing her age as 63. Upon leaving Gill smiled and waved (with middle finger)!

Day ended with packing, a final wander through the electric Saturday night crowds, and a waffle.
    Until next time Yangshuo,

  • Day 7: The night train to Chengdu for...

    4. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

...lost or abandoned occupational therapy students!

OMG the night train!! Our first experience of one, and it was like the knight bus from Harry Potter. Gill loved it and was much too intrigued to sleep for any length - spent most of the time desperately trying to see out of the window and sometimes wishing she hadn't seen the way the track towered over the roof tops and rivers! Impressed by the Dam and multiple tunnels through the mountains.

Traveled through vast areas of dramatic countryside void of civilisation to towns heavily populated with high rise apartments. Drove on and on through torrential rain and heavy morning mist, through mountains and over rivers.

25 hours is a long time....braided hair, played games, read books, laughed at the inaccuracies of google translate, and listened to music to relieve the monotony - time flies when you're having fun, or mesmerised watching China zoom past window like a real time national geographic documentary.

Emma's critical appraisal of night train:
Good points: pillow, duvet and hot water tap provided. All friends in same cabin. Regular friendly fruit, noodle, toy, leather belt (random or what?!) sellers. Able to lie in bed and window gaze.
Bad points: mattress 2cm thick - could be better! No wifi or plug sockets. Squat toilets. Smoking between carriages which lingered.
Utility/relevance: convenient and comfy enough - would use again (good job there are 4 more booked on the trip!!)

  • Day 8: Cheers to Chengdu!

    5. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Arrived at 2.30 not too weary after 30 hours in transit. Was welcomed by our new guide, Xaio. Had a quick freshen up and got ready for the opera. First mandarin lesson, Emma's favourite word was 'shomaw' meaning panda, Gill's was 'mimi' meaning secret, which she will use in future when somebody tries to guess her age.

At tea time, despite the mandarin lesson still had to point at all Chinese menu. Managed to order delicious beef curry and thank the non English speaking waitress in Chinese.

Spent the evening at Sichuan opera, famous for changing faces and spitting fire. It did not disappoint, we found it interesting to see the theatrical side of traditional Chinese culture. Jasmine tea and popcorn included.

Ended the night with a beautiful stroll by the river, which at 11pm was still buzzing with joggers, buskers and break dancers. Mandatory holiday ice cream and a few snaps by the beautiful Anshun bridge.

Gill says Caris and Jenni would love the designer shops and cool vibe of Chengdu. Emma says as not seen a McDonald's or KFC yet not sure about Ben.

  • Day 9: 20,000 panda steps around Chengdu

    6. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

...and 20,000 more in the club.
Up bright and early to see the pandas! They did not disappoint. Of the 2000 giant pandas in existence Chengdu breeding center is home to around 80, including a month old baby (see unbelievably cute photo). Gill liked the red pandas best due to their 'beautiful ginger colouring'. They were more like Chinese Foxes really.

Swift lunch followed by an afternoon exploring Chengdu museum and People's park. The park had things you'd expect to see in a park - boating lake and ice cream sellers, but also the unexpected - amusement arcade and a 'date market'. Prospective parents of, or singles themselves printed their bios and lined a portion of the path. Although our desirable pale skin attracted much interest, unfortunately none were tall enough for Gill. We laughed when a mother came and took an advert away as we were reading it...She obviously didn’t want her son dating a western women!

Sichuan hot pot for tea, and the supposedly mild and flavoursome broth had our eyes running in minutes. As recommended by Xiao (our guide), tried an array of meat and veg including cow stomach, goat, 'Chinese ham' (spam), meatballs and bamboo. The free ice cream and fruit helped cool us down! It was an experience! Gill not sure she'd do it again, Emma on the other hand will 'try owt once' (except dog). Marissa and Jordan not too keen...

Despite being tired, we wanted to make the most of our last night in Chengdu.
Emma: “we wont stay out too late, just go for a look and one drink....”
Gill: “Lets just go out and see what happens....”
After Emma sipping and Gill necking plum wine with Xiao, we said goodnight to our travel companions and headed out to explore the bars and clubs of Lankuifong. Had the best night in Jellyfish - fueled by beer tokens, free shots and shared fruit platters with our new friends, we were first on the dance floor! Great music - dancey mixes of old and new and bartenders very entertaining hanging from the roof making drinks and blowing fire! Also free bunny ears and light rings were fun, and spent a grand total of 80p all night...on the taxi ride back at 3am!

  • Day 10: Cheerio Chengdu!

    7. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Went for a wander downtown stopping at Louis' (a trendy looking cafe) for a Chinese ice tea. Just what we needed - it was a scorcher at 30+ degrees. Bought Chinese breakfast - pork dumplings to enjoy too.

Went to Wenshu monastery (1412 year old delightful wooden construction). It was extremely peaceful, and with Incense in hand we both prayed to the arts and literature Buddha for academic success. Gill also prayed to the happiness Buddha for Caris and Jenni's lifelong happiness and sent incense up to her dad.

Then a wander through the Tibetan quarter. Picked up some more street food - 'tornado potato' and meat stuffed bread patties. Really needed more time to buy souvenirs and absorb the atmosphere. Utilised our limited Chinese and gestural skills to buy Emma a new camera charging cable from a lovely lady who, after rummaging through a box of loose cables from under the counter, hooked it up to a battery and tested it!

Bought snacks and playing cards in preparation for our 15 hour train to Xian. Was intrigued by the Tibetan snack shop selling an array of cold dried meats including 'eaten cold rabbit' (see photo). Also bought some jelly sweets and Gill was tempted by the jasmine tea.

Having a love/hate relationship with money belts - although keeping valuables safe and secure; unbelievably sweaty and Emma's is starting to smell as bad as Jordan's trekking boots!

Will miss the cosmopolitan city of Chengdu, but excited to see the treasures of Xian.

  • Day 11: Xian, China's version of York!

    8. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After a 15 hour night train arrived in Xian and met our bubbly guide Leilei.

After a chill and freshen up we were introduced to the city, which is steeped in culture and has beautiful city walls, not dissimilar to York. Learned about the bell and drum towers which unfortunately are no longer in use. Rented bikes to cycle the city walls. Noticed an amazing contrast between outside and inside, as all buildings inside cannot legally be built above the wall's 12m height. Outside we see the characteristic high rise buildings of China.

Despite having a 2hr time limit on the bikes to complete the 14km circuit, Jordan was quickly side tracked by the opportunity to dress up in traditional Chinese costumes and have a photo shoot - we were all soon persuaded to partake. By the time we'd done we still had 10km to do in 20 minutes, needless to say we were late back despite racing round the walls like mario kart characters weaving around pedestrians and swerving up and down ramps past the 'cycle prohibited' signs. Only charged 15 yuan for the delay in returning bikes, but Leilei was most concerned and had already contacted the Shanghai office to report the missing group. He needed a beer to calm his nerves, but soon saw the funny side.

With adrenaline still pumping we were in fits of laughter as Emma was experiencing her classic FOMO (fear of missing out) when she returned from taking photos to the group freshening up with a wet wipe courtesy of Leilei. This was soon rectified and we were all aloe vera fresh and ready to mosey on to the Muslim quarter.

Here, we were forewarned that it was probably best not to eat anything, and when we saw the flattened squid on sticks and fly-covered goat carcasses being hacked up and thrown on the BBQs we agreed. Enjoyed the market though and all walked away with some gift and souvenir bargains. Emma was particularly impressed with Jordan's hard-core bartering skills, which Gill also quickly got the hang of.

After the earlier incident Leilei decided he'd stick close by, so took us to one of his favourite restaurants where we enjoyed a Chinese banquet including; beer chicken, sweet and sour, broccoli and garlic, and battered mushroom strips. Delicious.

Gill very excited to see Terracotta warriors tomorrow as been waiting 43 years to see them!

  • Day 12 - Terracotta dream come true

    9. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Emma awoke with a sore frou frou/ moo moo from cycling yesterday. Marissa and Jordan later confessed their similar affliction and we're waddling like pandas today. Strangely Gill unaffected.

Had a yummy international breakfast - full English and French toast joined by Popa the hostel cat. Hoping he's not for dinner as very cute.It was a drizzly misty day, but this didn't dampen our excitement and the mountains still looked beautiful en route to the terracotta warriors.

Wow! After 43 years Gill finally gets to see the terracotta warriors and meet the farmer who discovered them, grinning like a Cheshire Cat. We were blown away by the vastness of the pits, even though the 3 we saw only represents a tiny fraction of the entire army. Impressed by the detailed craftsmanship, each being individually modelled on one of emperor Ching's warriors. Leilei told us the fascinating history of the warriors which allowed us to appreciate the cruelty of China's first emperor, but also admire his leadership and intellect. This really brought the experience to life. In some way perhaps the Chinese beliefs around afterlife are being realised for these warriors, through this awe-inspiring archaeological discovery. The life of the farmer and his family was changed irrevocably by this, as he now spends his days as an additional tourist attraction...or celebrity? Unsure whether this is a blessing or a curse.

A lovely evening relaxing and playing cards with the group. Leilei took us to another great restaurant. Food has been excellent in Xian. All packed and prepared for a 6 hour bus ride to Shaolin tomorrow. The adventure continues...

P.S. Got told to 'keep the noise down' tonight as we celebrated receiving our year 2 results with whoops of delight. Prayers to Buddha for academic success clearly worked! Both very pleased.

  • Day 13: The road to Shaolin...

    10. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    ...the home of Kung fu!

We said goodbye to our Xian guide Leilei, then endured a very uncomfortable 6 hour bus ride. Sore bottoms, limited legroom, people doing strange things like cutting their nails, and only 1 squat toilet stop. Gill was wishing she hadn't shared a bottle of (very nice) red wine with Leilei the night before. As we approached our next destination, and drove between the rolling green mountains, Emma was getting very excited about tomorrow's hike. Finally arrived in Shaolin and was greeted by Vicky, our next guide.

Visited a local Kung Fu school, of which there are over 100 in the area. We had to giggle when we noticed the Shifu (Kung fu master) had also been our taxi driver earlier. 30 students (age 10-17) wowed us with their martial arts talents. Much hard work and discipline necessary to move with such power and grace. Among other things they broke concrete slabs with their hands and bent bamboo spears with their throats (made Gill squirm) - wow!
We were surprised to learn that Kung fu is more than a sport, providing an honourable vocation which can enable positions in the army, police force, roles in film and television, and teaching both in China and overseas.
The school is located in such a tranquil scenic place, we enjoyed being able to watch the sunset over the mountains too.

Completed the evening with another enjoyable mandarin lesson. Enjoying home made Chinese food cooked by hostel owners - haochi (delicious)!

  • Day 14: 1010 steps up to the Dharma Cave

    11. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Awoke to the sound of cockerels crowing - definitely not in York anymore.
Misplaced room key - Emma was convinced Gill was first in last night. Key inexplicably turns up in Emma's leggings pocket.

Hiked the 1010 steps over 2000km elevation to the Dharma cave at the top of the Song Shan mountain. Incredible views and worth the sweat, heat, and in Gill's case altitude induced panting and vertigo. Despite almost collapsing on the way up Gill was pleased to make it to the top to enjoy the views. Emma was impressed with Gills resilience and we sourced some local honey to help Gills raging sore throat.

On the descent viewed the pagoda forest where the ashes of 250 of the highest and most respected monks are buried, and visited the 1500 year old Shaolin Temple, comprising of many architecturally beautiful and colourful buildings / shrines.

Finally saw another show of Shaolin Kung Fu. It was very different to our intimate performance yesterday, with over 300 spectators, lights and music; though the same traditional weapons and routines. Emma was not phased by the crowd, and shot on stage to battle it out with two others to mirror their respective mentors. Emma's moves (and roll) in tiger style won over the audience, and she was very happy to win a DVD of the show!

Back to the guesthouse for yet another delicious meal before packing for our night train to Beijing.

  • Day 15: Campfire and sunset....

    12. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

...on the Great Wall of China!
Okay, so it's illegal to camp ON the wall, but Peter assured us we were within our rights to use it as a wind shield

After another night train arrived in Beijing's second largest rail station at 6am. Necessary for the 25 million inhabitants of the city. Met our next guide, Peter.

Dropped bags at Leo's hostel - Gill reckons it seems a bit touristy, but will wait until we've spent the night to offer her critical appraisal.
Enjoyed a relaxing mandarin lesson learning calligraphy with wolf hair brushes and parchment. Gill won the challenge for her neat and and accurate handwriting, donating her prize of a beginners calligraphy set to Marissa.

After freshening up, set out on the 2 1/2 hour drive to our secluded campsite for the night, an unrestored section of the 5000km long Great Wall. All feeling pretty exhausted - fell asleep in minibus in bustling busy Beijing...woke up in countryside surrounded by mountains. Soon after we got our first glimpse of the Great Wall, a tiny distant structure snaking through the hills.

An hours hike to our wall-side oasis. Gill struggled a bit due to sore throat, and the shady green pills given by Chinese pharmacy had not yet kicked in. Emma stuck close by the keep an eye and offer encouragement. Very pleased and emotional to make it to the top.

Pitched tents and had our first mosey on the wall. Emma particularly enjoyed foraging for wood, and Gill cremating her marshmallows on the fire. As the sun set over the rolling hills, we got an early night with every intention of getting up at 4.30am to watch the sun rise...

  • Day 16: Battling on in Beijing

    13. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Cloudy sunrise on the Great Wall. It was fully light by 5am, and the mist made the distant mountains fade from luscious green, to distant grey silhouettes.
Despite our thermal ground cover and sleeping mats Emma was colder than expected through the night; Gill was quite snug though this might be due to still being poorly.

Emma loved spending the early morning taking photos on the wall, and particularly the guard tower. It was so peaceful, the only sounds being the squawking and singing of the birds, the buzzing of insects and distant aeroplane rumbles...bliss!
After catching another hour in bed we were woken with rain at 7.20 so quickly packed away the tents and made our decent.

Gill thought the Great Wall was phenomenal and really appreciated seeing both unrestored and restored sections away from the tourists. Took a walk on Juyong Pass, but Gill was beaten by the stairs so instead opted for a more leisurely stroll around one of the pavilions.

Stopped off at the Olympic park, built to host the 2008 games. Pretty cool, the birds nest stadium was very unique. Emma very proud of Gill...despite feeling like death and a more appropriate pass time would be being curled up in bed with a hot lemon, she battled on along the Great Wall and through the park without a peep. Emma hoped snuggles in the minibus back to the hostel would help.

Delicious roast Peking duck for dinner followed by a farewell drink for Jordan, who leaves us tomorrow. Will miss his northern banter!

  • Day 17: Boiling in Beijing...

    14. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

...sightseeing, shopping and 'very British problems'.

Spent today taking in the main sights of China's capital. First we explored Tiananmen Square seeing the congress hall, Mao's mausoleum, the museum of Chinese history and revolution, and of course the gate to the Forbidden City.

Forbidden city was huge. 980 buildings to be precise, the largest palace complex in the world. Peter guided us through the hustle and bustle, pointing out key buildings throughout the beautiful complex. Experienced the Chinese authorities in action when we - the 'common people' - were herded out despite buying tickets due to visiting French dignitaries. We had to comply as Peter had already pointed the numerous CCTV cameras.

    Warning: Upcoming 'very British problem'...
So far we've been pretty tolerant of the lack of queues, though today Gill had a justified outburst in the toilets in the forbidden city....people shoving past to get to the cubicles ignoring the obvious queue, pulling open the doors when people weren't even finished - very rude! Emma was barely out of her cubicle when someone shoved past to get in!

Then took the bus to Hong Chao Pur market where we picked up some tourist bargains and had some lunch. Emma was excited by the food court and let Peter choose her lunch, a delicious moderately spicy noodle dish and 'Chinese hamburger'. Gill was obviously still poorly as had to eat English food, and appreciated the blandness of her first Subway.

All enjoyed shopping in Minso for facial treats then made our way to a fabulous Silk shop. Gill spent thousands in her head on new bedding, quilts and pillows - but managed to resist despite being told it will help keep her looking young!
Emma was in love with the silk dresses...unfortunately out of a student budget, so will have to return when a rich qualified OT!

Opted for an unplanned bike ride back to Hostel in 37^ heat - Katie Melua was in fact wrong, it felt like there were far more than 9 million bicycles in Beijing! Gill seriously hoping P20 was still working and chest would hold out! Great fun and beats the bustle of buses. Helmets not a thing here, so some positive risk taking necessary.

Enjoyed some much needed relaxation and a bit of a pamper tonight, followed by a short mosey to a nearby hostel for a bite to eat and drinks.

Gill loved speaking to Jen & Caris on What's App video.
Special birthday wishes to my beautiful Jenni xx Love you from Mumbles

  • Day 18: Strolling in the Beijing sun

    15. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 38 °C

Spent a lovely morning exploring the Temple of Heaven. We braved the roads again to cycle there and back along cycle 'paths' as wide as our roads running alongside the 8 lanes of traffic. A thrilling way to get around!

Really enjoyed strolling through the surrounding park, which was equipped for the health and well-being for the 'aged population'. New special interest in gerontology....seriously considering introducing the same in museum gardens when we qualify! There was space for dancing, aerobics, tai chi, card and board games, a musical area, knitting and crochet...bringing people together to enjoy or spectate. Very OT.

Beijing hostel our least favourite so far - bit of a dingy building site, poor food, damp laundry - glad we got out to make the most of our limited time in the capital. Enjoyed a typical Beijing lunch of noodle platter and walnut chicken, followed by a relaxing wander around the immaculately clean centre adorned with lanterns, engraved stonework and brass statues. Escaped the heat and stopped for a delicious iced tea where we nattered and watched the people and trams pass by.

Health update: Gill finished course of little green pills, which have also turned her pee radioactive green colour and may be the cause of her new chesty cough ailment. Emma sneezing more then usual, but determined not to get ill! No more bug bites. Gill loving new UV umbrella - no sunburn!

Beijing central station is huge! Like an unfamiliar crowded Kings Cross, and luckily we could say goodbye to Peter after we were safely on the correct train. Another night train tonight, 14 hours then we'll be exploring the bamboo forests of Moganshan.

    16. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

After the night train opted for Chinese fast food breakfast, which google translated to 'black black black you are my little pepper proud intestinal" (chipolata sausages).

Both felt a bit ropey after a 2 hr bumpy drive from Hangzou to Moganshan.
Changed minibus half way, as the first rickety bus would probably not have made the mountain drive, at least not at the driver's bullet train-esque speed!

Lovely accommodation nestled in the bamboo forest. Gill made the right choice choosing to rest her ever worsening cough in bed, whilst Emma Marissa and Cassie (our Mogashan and Shanghai guide) set out on a bike ride. The road to the lagoon was closed due to filming, so we'll all try again tomorrow...today opting for a walk through the bamboo and a watermelon feast.

Chilled in the bar in the evening, in spite of Cassie's questioning beer will cure Gill's chesty cough, she's determined! Had to call Cassie to the rescue at 10.30pm as locked out of our hotel....quickly resolved but an interesting end to the evening.

Tickled by another Chenglish translation at breakfast for the cocktail sausages as "breakfast bowels" (see photo).
Speaking of bowels, Emma has discovered the best remedy for constipation to be excessive watermelon consumption.

As planned cycled to the lagoon this morning. Gill decided to rest up, as cough still raging and have a busy few days in Shanghai ahead. Very determined to get better, Gill is taking all shady Chinese medicine and immunity boost sachets religiously. See photo of bamboo forest view from window for Gill's Moganshan contribution.

The lagoon ('Big Wu Reservoir') was stunning, and Emma couldn't wait to go for a dip! However, the relief from the cool mountain water didn't last long, as a community officer soon came down to inform her that swimming is prohibited. Emma reluctantly climbed out, and Cassie explained that we were unlucky as this rule only seems to be enforced on weekends, and the lagoon is safe! Bought more delicious watermelon on the ride back and freshened up for lunch.

After a 2 hour bullet train from Dequing to Shanghai we check into our hostel.
You would have thought at Gill's age she would have learned to go with her gut instinct, and in signing up for the 'drunken dragon pub crawl' it would be just that. Never one to shy away from a night out on the town, she did enjoy meeting people from different trips, but did not like the last club. Why is it always English men that want to feel your backside?! Emma was thoroughly entertained by some crazy dancing by a large Chinese man, and 3 bars, a party bus and a very noisy club later we made it home around 3.30.

  • Day 21: Weary wander around the waterway

    18. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Day out to Zhujiajiao. Both equally underwhelmed, as we were told this water town is the Chinese Venice. It was nowhere near as impressive, but still a pleasant Sunday stroll. Enjoyed sitting on the waterfront outside Starbucks, where Emma sampled a delicious iced green tea java chip.

Of all the shops in Shanghai Emma found the local Tesco to pick up some conditioner and her new favourite crisps - lime Pringles.
Had a much needed lazy evening to recuperate after 21 days on the road - it's going so fast...unlike Gill's cough!

  • Day 22: Showers in Shanghai

    19. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Kicked off the day with another Mandarin lesson on the rooftop. Then a change of plan due to weather as decided the Gardens weren't the best option in the rain. Opted for Shanghai museum instead. Emma went for a solo wander around the city - very proud she made it back with her sense of direction (and a little help from google maps). Emma discovered an underground mall with a huge amusement arcade, like nothing she'd seen before. It seemed the whole adolescence of Shanghai was there with armfuls of cuddly winnings from the claw machines, singing in the sing star booths, and playing an array of noisy unfamiliar games. Emma was very pleased to walk away with a Shaun the sheep toy - souvenir for Ben sorted!

Gill spent most of the day in a daze and decided, after several hours of coughing needed another trip to the pharmacy as current drugs were not helping!
However, Cassie decided a trip to the hospital was in order to see a Dr. So hospital it was...
The hospital was in the British concession area so very old building and strangely quiet.
Gill was checked in by a receptionist who took her temperature then told to find the Dr who was sitting in a little office. Blood pressure taken, throat checked, chest listened to in full view of other patients. No client confidentially here! Sent off for blood test and x-ray.
Relieved to find the blood test was just a finger prick but again this was done in the corridor.
No health and safety precautions for the x-ray here all were able to watch!
Impressed with the instant results identifying only an infection. Antibiotics and 2 other tablets prescribed and collected. All very efficient costing only 187.50 yuan which is less then the prescriptions charges at home!
A curious way to spend an evening, sussing out the healthcare system in China!

  • Day 23: Shanghai

    20. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Shanghai is a very big city, best enjoyed from the comfort of a hot tub on the 32nd floor of the Vue Bar at the Hyatt hotel.

Visited two archaeologically and historically distinct concessions, the French (Tianzifang) and the British (The Bund). Walked down Nanjing Road, the busiest shopping street in the world, then took in the skyline from the riverside before ascending to the Vue Bar for an ariel view.

Both impressed by the iconic city skyline, but didn't feel we got to know the real Shanghai, perhaps because 'story time' (one of our previously favourite ways to learn about the history and culture) was missing.

Tested Cassie's leadership skills as only her 3rd ever group. She's had to deal with us getting locked out of our guesthouse, Emma being told off for swimming in the lagoon by the authorities, changing schedules, Gill's hospital trip and today's shutting down of an ATM and swallowing Gill's card!

An early start tomorrow as back on the road. Next stop Fujian!

  • Day 24: On the road again...

    21. juni 2017, Kina ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

On the metro saying goodbye to Shanghai by 6am. Managed to liven up the 9hour bullet train ride a little with cards, and by working out that we've been in transit for 107 hours (4.4 days) since we arrived in China. Some silly song writing too, but overall a very dull trip, with weather to match!

Met Damon, our friendly Fujian guide. You'd think after the long train ride we'd be fed up of traveling, but the minivan had an awesome surprise....Karaoke (KTV) and a kick ass sound system which put the Shanghai pub crawl bus to shame!
2 hours later, after travelling on a road still under construction we arrive at our 300 year old rural round house. Not what we were expecting. Much more wood than mud, plus we have beds. Reminded me of the Shakespeare's globe. We are sleeping in the tiniest of rooms on the forth floor and have decided it's haunted due to inexplicable bikini swaying and cat noises.

Ended the night with a beer, and for Emma a long awaited chicken's foot which was surprisingly spicy and more skin than meat. Goodnight from our plush mudhouse room, complete with 90's television, air con (a fan) and kettle.
