    Made it to Lyon, France

    13 de mayo de 2024, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

After 2 flights I arrived in Lyon, tired but happy. The flights were very smooth and the dinner and free wine were good. No complaints Air Canada👍✈️. Now to sightsee as I can't check in to my hostel yet. I'll have to walk off the delicious chocolate croissant I just ate😁Leer más

    Lyon

    Full day in Lyon

    22 de enero de 2024, Francia ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Today we woke up and were feeling hungry. We decided to go to a nice little bakery called Bakery Albon. I don’t know what the French do to their croissants, but I would like the rest of the world to learn. Then it was museum time! We went to Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, which was humongous and seemed like it went on foreverrr. It was pretty shnazzy though! Afterwards we had lunch at this bistro place. I had a burger and learned that the French do NOT cook their meat anywhere near enough, ah well. Then we stopped off at a bakery again to experience French pastry goodness again :) we chilled back at the air bnb before heading out to a Lebanese restaurant yummmm (except the fly I found in my drink oops) anyway eat eat walk walk sleep sleep zzzzLeer más

    Lyon time!

    21 de enero de 2024, Francia ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Nothing like a 5am start! We got up, ready to head to our bus station around a 15 minute walk away. Too early for this :( anyway we hopped on a bus and around 20 minutes later we arrived at the Marco Polo Airport! Our flight was at 8:30 and we go there at around 6. We walked around a bunch just waiting for our flight to start boarding and then kablam, boarding time! It was such a small plane and the flight took just over an hour. When we arrived in Lyon we caught a train to central Lyon and tried to find a luggage storage place. We found one that was around a 40 minute walk but when we got there it was permanently closed. Thanks google. We were also starving so we had to drag our luggage everywhere we went to go for food - which was annoyingly difficult, especially on a Sunday - we ended up finding a sushi train which was good! Anyway we chilled there for a bit before the air bnb hosts let us leave our luggage. Then we went on a little stroll to the Saint Jean Baptiste Basillica where along the way we saw the most police officers all in riot gear ever. There was a big protest going on and yeah wow it was kinda scary. Anyway we then went to the supermarket to get some frozen pizza and chippies before going home and having a chill dinner at home night. ZzzzLeer más

    Bread Butter Stairs!!! Lyon France

    12 de octubre de 2023, Francia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

I love France. I’ve been on the cappuccino French bread and butter program for 24 glorious hours. Why eat anything else when whereever I turn warm bread aromas are wafting around me?

And I’ve climbed up and down an inordinate amount of steps today. I kept thinking I needed to call an Uber but then a 9 month pregnant woman whizzed by me and little school children passed us up. And so it was a beautiful day for many reasons and it was a day of sadness for many reasons. My heart was with family and friends today who had challenging moments. And for the suffering of so many. It was a day of everything.Leer más

    Look who I found!

    12 de octubre de 2023, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

I ran into a plant today that I know very well back home in Colorado - Woolly Mullein. Growing alongside a walking trail we were on this afternoon, this Verbascum thapsus practically called out my name and said, “Hey stranger, good to see you here in my native continent. What are you doing here?” Considered an invasive plant species back in North America, this member of the Snapdragon (Scrophulariaceae) Family has a long history of being used to treat respiratory illnesses. As I walked away, it asked me to send its regards to its long lost siblings across the Atlantic. “Will do. Au revoir, “ I said, as a French couple walking up the trail saw me talking to a plant. They gave me a very wide berth as I went by them. I heard one say to the other, “Un autre touriste étrange venu des États-Unis!” (Another weird tourist from the United States!).Leer más

    Wandering the streets of Lyon.

    12 de octubre de 2023, Francia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Lyon is a lovely city where the confluence of the Soane and Rhône Rivers is found. Today was another day of walking and walking, including the steep climb up to the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere, with a panoramic view of the city. Built in the late 1800s, it is yet another European church built in dedication to the Virgin Mary, to whom is attributed the salvation of the city of Lyon from the bubonic plague that swept Europe in 1643. Mary is also credited with saving the city a number of other times, such as from a Cholera epidemic in 1832, and from Prussian invasion in 1870. “So, let’s build her a church!”

Such interesting sights, colorful buildings, and, much to our delight, not too many people.
We enjoyed delicious food at outdoor cafes found throughout the city.

We have seen many groups of school children out in the community in all of the cities we have been in. We loved seeing them out of the classroom. Children are children. Just like in the US, younger ones are moving, running, laughing, making noise, and are full of energy and curiosity and life. Teenagers love to gather in small groups, sit on steps or just on the ground, and talk, laugh, joke, and be teenagers.

We also walked by many schools, and European buildings full of children sound just like US buildings full of children.

The last photo is a solo Mute Swan, swimming in the Soane River a short distance upstream from where it meets the Rhône.

    Lyon, Fun on the Funicular

    29 de septiembre de 2023, Francia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After putting my washing out on the maiden and tucking into our new favourite breakfast, Rilletes on fresh bread, for breakfast we headed into the sprawling city.
The city's trams are very accessible but the aging metro, less so. A sizeable gap meant we needed to find assistance to get Dickie on board. Dickie hasn't seen such manhandling!!! 😳 but without a full inspection he seems to have survived OK.
First stop was the fan village. Baking hot temperatures in the cocoon of Place Bellecour but well organised. Nearly joined the queue to join the Gendarme instead of the queue for berets! 🤣
Next challenge was to walk through the muddle of All Black's outside all the bars to the funicular to the top of the city. Two attractions in one up on the Hill, the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourviere and the view of Mont Blanc and across the city. Oh, and a bar, first beer of the day was very welcome!
On our return to terra firma (never a fan of heights) we had a well earned lunch in la rebublique where Kev managed to catch some Friday Ryder cup action.
And, onto the Groupama stadium... bring on the game!
