    Day 9

    Sunday and Monday in Berlin

    Sunday; Flew into Berlin quite early from Dublin, unfortunately Jacks suitcase was left in Ireland but thankfully we have air tags so we knew where it was and they were able to send it on the flight coming in that night!
    Dropped our bags then went to a cafe for lunch, thankfully one of the servers spoke English so we could communicate but definitely could feel the language barrier here! Went for a wander around and to the Berlin Wall memorial site which had lots of information on the wall. Went to a market then back to the hotel for a rest! Found dinner nearby at a cute beer garden and then Jack and Alyssa went to the airport to collect his bag so Jayden and I just watched Netflix! Was a nice night to catch up on things and chill out!
    Monday; started our day with Brekky at the hotel, definitely different options at a German buffet but delicious! Went on a walking tour with an Australian guide. He’s been living in Berlin for 5 years, and Europe for 10! He was full of so much knowledge and spoke in an easy way we could follow. I learnt a lot about the Cold War and WW|| and the timing of everything that I never knew as I didn’t like history in school 🤣
    It’s so eye opening to know that the Berlin Wall was only up 36 years ago, feels like it should be a lot longer! Berlin has definitely learnt from their past and you can see how they’re trying to make the capital a better place to thrive!
    After the tour we went to the topography of terror museum, just so sad to read all the stories! :(
    Checked out the Mall of Berlin and then headed back to get ready for dinner and the ice bar!
    Burgermeister was a recommendation and very delicious! Then went to the ice bar which was lots of fun! The glass was made of ice!!    Read more

    A Special Day

    This was such a special day because we caught up with Fabian (or Faberjan as we used to call him 😊), an international student who came to NZ to study English and lived with us for a year when he was 17. We haven't seen him for 14 years and it was so good to give him a big hug. The conversation flowed easily and it was as if we'd seen each other only yesterday.     Heute wieder ausgiebig Frühstücken. Da bei meiner ToDo Liste fast schon alles abgestrichen ist, nehmen wir es heute gemütlich und besuchen die "Gärten der Welt". Etwas für Roman, ich glaube er vermisst etwas seine Arbeit 🫣. Bei Gärtner bei der Arbeit oder bei einem Werkhof oder einem Werkhofgefährt - da musste immer angehalten werden. Zuschauen oder sogar eine Inspektion durfte nicht fehlen. Wir laufen zum "Roten Rathaus" und nehmen dort die U-Bahn 5. Wir sind sicher 40 Minuten unterwegs. Raus aus der U-Bahn und dem Einheimischen-Strom folgen. Die Tickets haben wir online gekauft und können sofort in die Gondel einsteigen. Diese fährt uns auf den Hügel. Von dort schlendern wir zu den Gärtern. Eine wundervolle riesige Parkanlage mit ganz verschieden Gärten, z.b. der Orientalischegarten der Renaissancegarten, der Harten des Glaubens. Wirklich wundervoll. Unseren Picknick Zmittag haben wir auf der Wiese auf Liegenstühlen genossen und danach gleich noch ein Nickerchen gemacht. Perfekt. Als es uns zu frisch wurde, machten wir uns wieder auf den Hügel um ins Bähnli zu steigen. Dieses mal haben wir sogar eines mit einem durchsichtigen Boden erwischt 🥴. Da es noch früh war, machten wir uns wieder zum Kurfürstendamm auf. Ich durfte noch ein wenig shoppen. Also wieder etwas länger mit dem Bus fahren. Sogar noch etwas länger wegen dem Verkehr und weil unser Fahrer einen Anfänger-Busfahrer noch aus einer misslichen Situation retten musste (der Anfänger war falsch gefahren und konnte weder vorwärts noch rückwärts). Als etwas gefunden war, gnossen wir zum Abschluss einen leckeren Burger mit Pommes. War wirklich sehr lecker. Wieder im Zimmer genossen wir das nichts tun und schon bald das bequeme Bett.     Back in Germany 🇩🇪

    Deutschland heißt uns gleich so toll willkommen, dass wir gar nicht dazu kommen, einen neuen, den letzten, Footprint dieser Reise zu veröffentlichen .

    Der große „Welt“teil unserer Reise ist nun vorüber. Ein bisschen wehmütig sind wir, und zugleich voller Vorfreude auf das, was kommt.

    Wir leiten mit dem Besuch in Deutschland eine Art Übergangsphase ein: keine festen Jobs, keine Wohnung, dafür ein bisschen mehr Struktur und Beschäftigung mit Themen, die uns beruflich und privat wichtig sind. Und natürlich Besuche bei Familie und Freund:innen, die wir in den letzten 1,5 Jahren sehr vermisst haben. 🥹

    Ich setze meine Tanztherapieausbildung fort und bilde mich zur systemischen Paartherapeutin weiter. Und wir werden einige europäische Ziele ansteuern: Wien, Andalusien und Südfrankreich sind geplant.

    Chillen und ein bisschen Geschichte

    Obwohl Berlin eine Grossstadt ist, haben wir es trotzdem geschafft, etwas herunter zu fahren. Wir haben fein gefrühstückt und natürlich auch so ein paar Bäckereien ausgecheckt.     Berlin, wir sind da!

    Früh klingelte der Wecker und wir machten uns erneut auf den Weg zum Flughafen. Wie auch wir haben scheinbar viele andere selber ein Hotel gebucht. Bei der Sicherheitskontrolle stauten sich die vielen Menschen, aber wir waren zum Glück früh genug da. Alles warteten gespannt auf die Infos zum Gate und als endlich kurz vor Boarding die Durchsage kam, stressten natürlich alle gleich dorthin. Weil da aber noch ein anderer Flug angeschrieben war, herrschte bei manchen sogar Panik 🙄 Im Flugzeug dauerte es super lange, bis jeder seinen Platz gefunden hatte und nach dem Enteisen konnten wir dann mit einer halben Stunde Verspätung ab. Nach einem turbulenten Flug kamen wir nach rund drei Stunden in Berlin an. Das Gepäck kam zum Glück schnell und wir konnten mit dem Zug Richtung Alexanderplatz fahren.     Sightseeing dag 1

    Vi var forbi Führerbunker, Jøde mindesmærke, Reichtag, Brandenburger Tor, Harckescher Markt og Domkirken. Vi spiste frokost udendørs i det dejlige solskinsvejr.
    President Biden var også på besøg i Berlin. Hans karavane af sorte biler kørte fordi, og helikoptere fløj over os.
    Til aften rodede vi os ud i noget mexicansk i Kreuzberg med margharitas og øl. Det var hektisk, rodet og en smule snusket. Typisk Kreuzberg.

    Day 4

    Day 4 - Berlin Marathon

    Today was the Berlin marathon. Cathie and 58,000 other runners traveled 42.2 km around the city.
    Weather was cool at the start but the sun was shining and eventually it hit about 14 C. Less windy than the past two days.
    Bob was a great supporter. He got me to the start and then took my warm clothes for later.
    I had bought a throw away hoodie that I would donate at the start line.
    Race was so crowded the entire time. I have never run a race that big before.
    My time was slower than I had hoped, 4:49:27, but I was injured the last three weeks so just thankful I was able to run.
    We celebrated with German beer and schnitzel afterwards.
    Now we are packing and getting ready to head to the airport at 4:30 am for our morning flight to Zurich.
    We then catch three trains to Wegan where we meet up with our friends Janet & Gary and Sharon & Steve for a week of hiking. 🥾
    Between Bob’s knee and my sore legs we are going to be quite the couple.

    Day 3

    Day 3 - Saturday in Berlin

    After we each slept about 10 hours we think we are rested. I did a very short run from the hotel to make sure my legs were going to be ready for tomorrow.
    We walked to the start / finish line of the marathon. The 5 km shake out race was taking place which was fun to see how many runners were participating.
    We found the participant entrance point for tomorrow morning and the area where I will hopefully find Bob after I finish.
    We then took the subway back to the hotel and found another nice coffee shop.
    Weather is cool but the sun is shining. The winds are starting to ease. Hopefully tomorrow they will be less but it’s going to be chilly at the start. No rain forecasted which is great.
    There are over 58,000 runners tomorrow. I am in H corral which means I should be going off at 10 am. I bought a throw away fleece to donate at the race start so I don’t freeze during the 90 minutes I am waiting for my start. Berlin marathon has an App if anyone wants to track me. I am race #77273. Bob is going to be able to take transit around the city and spot me hopefully during the day. Thanks for all the well wishes.

    Another day in Berlin

    There's quite a contrast between Norway and Berlin:
    Order - chaos
    Clean - grungy
    Homogeneous, pretty straight population - all types, individuals, more crazies
    Regulated - more liberal
    A bit of civic restraint - buildings on a scale.
    But, after a few visits, Berlin seems familiar and likeable.
    So this morning we went t-shirt shopping for Sue. She had found that someone had swapped a child's t-shirt for hers during a recent wash. And so, she needed a new one to get her through this warm weather.
    We revisited the Memorial to the Murder of Jews, just to keep the up mood going. It was worth being reminded how horrific and unfathomable that campaign was.
    After a spot of lunch, we met Ilona at the East Side Gallery where artists have painted on the remaining part of the Berlin Wall.
    There seems to have been a lot of new building of apartments and offices, which is softening the Stalinist vibe in some areas.    Read more
