Cádiz

Cadiz is considered to be the most ancient, consistently occupied city in Europe. It was founded by the Phoenicians in (around) 1000 BC. It fell to the Carthaginians after the First Punic War and became a depot for Hannibal's conquest of southern Iberia. Eventually, it was conquered by the Romans, the
Visigoths, Byzantines, the Moors, and the Castilians, who eventually fell under Spanish. The city has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. Today, it is a beautiful coastal city with winding streets lined with four story white buildings, each distinctive in its decorative windows, ironwork balconies, and stonework ornamentation. There are many monuments, churches, cathedrals, and parks, along with outdoor cafés and pedestrian areas. It is a charming, welcoming city.

We walked through the city with a local guide, learning about the different neighborhoods, churches, and gardens. Next, we stopped at a market area for free time to wander and have a drink. We ended up sharing an outdoor table with another couple and bought a paper cone of Chicharrones, which are spiced, deep-fried, luscious pork cubes. They were a fabulous pairing with a cold local beer.

It was another fabulous day in a beautiful location.
