    Last Day in Whitehaven

    There was a really strong wind last night. Gusts over 70 mph, apparently. Glad we were in the Cottage with no need to go anywhere. Miraculously, there were no power failures that affected us.

    A bright morning, still with strong winds. The tide was out, so we went to Saint Bees for a walk on the beach.

    We go to Regan and Jonny's and take some gifts. After that we had a lovely lunch at the Ploughman restaurant.

    Back to the house, and we go for a walk in their neighborhood. It is a lovely area with outstanding views of the ocean and Whitehaven.

    Back to the cottage to get organized for an early departure tomorrow.

    Day 2. Ennerdale bridge to Borrowdale

    Early start day 2. good frost on the ground and pub closed so up and walking by 6.45.
    Breakfast on bench when we got to Ennerdale waters.
    Lovely walk around the lake before a coffee at a YHA.These are a bit like the refuges in France with honesty box during the day.
    Walk up through forest before a late lunch and then steep ascent and then down to Honister where they mine slate.
    Stayed at basic campground at chapel farm. Walked down to the pub at Stonethwaite. Lovely meal with great service. Huge contrast with previous night.
    Forecast bad tomorrow so booked a room in Grasmere.    Baca selengkapnya

    Schöne Wanderung in grandioser Landschaft. Die Hinfahrt war bei 25% Steigung und einer Anzeige von 2m Breite nervenaufreibend. Die Rückfahrt auf schlechten, schmalen Strassen mit exorbitant zuviel Verkehr nichts ungewohntes in UK. Drei Steinadler Sichtungen.Baca selengkapnya

    Eine Schifffahrt die ist lustig

    Heute haben wir uns wieder auf den Weg nach Coniston gemacht unser Ziel war der Pier denn wir wollten mit der historischen Gondula fahren. Das Dampfschiff aus der vikorianischen Zeit ist nicht nur wunderschön sondern bietet eine sehr entspannte Möglichkeit die Gegend zu erkunden. Bisher eines der besten Erlebnisse. Währen Mama den Geschichten unter Deck gelauscht hat und mehr über die Region gelernt hat fand es Helena beim Kapitän am besten und wollte gar nicht mehr weg.Baca selengkapnya

    Tarn Hows - Lake District

    Nun sind wir also im Lake District, einer wunderschönen, aber bei uns Kontinentaleuropäern wenig bekannten Gegend zwischen Liverpool und Glasgow. Die vielen Seen sind Gletscherseen und die Landschaft erinnert an Gegenden in Norwegen oder Schweden.
    Wir haben uns eine Wanderung um den See Tarn Hows
    vorgenommen - eine eher kleine Wanderung. Das ist auch gut so, denn am Nachmittag soll es regnen.
    Nach einem sehr guten Frühstück, das uns Michael - einer der Wirte des BnBs - serviert, fahren wir auf verschlungenen Wegen knapp 10 Meilen zum See. Der Parkplatz ist wieder sehr voll, aber ich finde noch eine Lücke.
    Die Wanderung ist wunderschön. Trotz des Wetters, das zwischen trüb, neblig und nieselig schwankt, haben wir malerische Ausblicke auf die Berge und den See.
    Anschließend fahren wir noch nach Coniston, um einige Einkäufe zu erledigen.
    Der Lake District ist wirklich eine Gegend zum Verweilen, aber wir müssen morgen weiter.    Baca selengkapnya

    Lakes District Pt 2

    📌 The weekend in the lakes district was a busy one, summer and decent weather meant lots of visitors. Saturday was a relaxing day as unsurprisingly it was forecast as a rainy one. We ventured out to The lingholm kitchen, apparently the inspiration behind the Peter Rabbit tale as the author often spent summers there. It was a beautiful old house with well kept picturesque gardens and a greenhouse. The food was delicious and mostly local which was great.

    📌 We decided we'd go for a short walk from the gardens, we were a little unprepared and ended up walking 6km up a pretty decent ascent to the catbells summit, it was a rewarding view of one of the larger lakes in the region. We ended the day with a visit to Windermere, spending some time at a traditional pub with a dukebox and then some drinks in a live music venue.

    📌 Our final day in the lakes district was a good one, the weather was turning it on and we summited one of the nicest views in the area, the old man of conniston. The walk provided more awesome views of the surrounding peaks and ridges plus some tarns/lakes. It was another steep hike with some navigation required but one of the best ones for sure.

    📌 Our last stop over on the way home as a rewarding afternoon was a small complex in a very small town that was a brewery, cheesery and wine bar. The cheeses were from all over, and the variety was great, we enjoyed a few hours outside in the sun relaxing. We also couldn't resist picking up a fresh made apple pie for a Sunday night dessert.

    📌 The lakes district was well worth the trip, a pocket of the UK that feels vast and rugged, something that can be hard to find amongst a country quite densely populated. We plan to go back in the winter and see some snow hopefully.    Baca selengkapnya

    Tag 16: Windermere to Coniston

    Eigentlich ist der Plan mir einen Rundweg zu basteln aus den Aufzeichnungen bei Komoot names "Weniger abgelegen mit dem Fahrrad: Touren im Lake District", aber heute bin ich nichts davon gefahren 😂 Gestern beim Waschen ist mir eine Broschüre für das Lakeland Motor Museum aufgefallen. Ein Museum mit alten Autos und Motorrädern? Ihr könnt euch also denken wo es heute als erstes hin ging. Ungefähr 13 km an der Ostseite von Lake Windermere später liegt das Museum südlich des Sees.
    Danach bin ich an der Westseite hochgefahren, um zum nächsten See names Esthwaite Water zu fahren. Direkt am See liegt ein kleines Café in dem ich einen Tee, Panini und Karottenkuchen genieße. Gestärkt geht es weiter zum nächsten See Coniston Water auf deren Westseite mehrere Campingplätze liegen. Generell fahre ich immer wieder an B&Bs, Hotels, Ferienwohnungen und ein paar Campingplätzen vorbei. Scheint hier eine sehr beliebte Urlaubsgegend zu sein. Auch fahre ich an einem Beachhotel mit Spa vorbei. Da denke ich eher ans Mittelmeer und nicht Lake District bei 15°C im Regen.
    Generell hats heute wieder schön geregnet und wieder einige Höhenmeter gab's zu überwinden. Auf der Überfahrt des Hawkshead Hill genieße ich die Aussicht und wandere noch ein bisschen höher. Ist wirklich schön hier. Es geht ähnlich wie in den Dales auf und ab, aber alles viel mehr bewachsen, wodurch ich häufig nichts sehe beim Fahren außer Bäume. Aber nicht schlimm. Lake District kann sich wirklich sehen lassen. Auch im Regen.    Baca selengkapnya

    Rocky Mountain High

    What a day! Cool but sunny start with a rocky hike along banks of Ennerdale Water, taking a break at Robin Hood Chair. Circuiting around the lake we followed the road along the edge of the pine plantations, passing old stone homes, hundreds of years old, through latch gates in the light but soaking rain. We came to Black Sail YHA, but closed for coffee. Not well sign posted we took some detours across paddocks and boggy marsh before making out the trail mid way up the mountain. With the rain settling into a good drenching, we climbed up to Loft Beck following the rocky cascading rushing stream along the rock footpath. Large bags of rocks have been dropped by helicopter to repair the path. Cold and wet we could make out in the mist the cairns to Brandreth and Grey Knotts Head. Skifty sheets of white mist blowing over the ridge and saddles before finally heading steeply down the rocky path passed the slate quarry to Seatoller for a hot shower, beautiful meal and warm bed. 25km, 8 and a half hours.Baca selengkapnya

    Day 1 - Coast to Coast

    After a long day yesterday travelling from London to St Bees by train (worse than VR) we began our big hiking adventure. A fabulous day following the Coast for 8 km to then travel West through lush green fields with long haired sheep of many varied colours, and black and brown cows and calves. Visiting villages with their brick homes lining the streets. A very old disused Church with gravestones dating back to 1796, woodlands of fir trees being thinned out and cleared. Herdwick sheep. A steep climb up Dent fell to then weave down through the fir forest to hike along a beautiful valley beside a small flowing gill. We passed beside Herdwick sheep and glossy black horses grazing on the mountainsides into Ennerdale Bridge to Shepherds Inn for our first night accomodation..Baca selengkapnya

    Ennerdale Bridge to Rosthwaite

    24 miles is a long way to hike especially if one throws in a 450 metre elevation gain towards the end. I had another late start. Mr TPRM thinks I need to get going a little earlier. I got up late 8 and by the time I was packed up and Peter had driven me back to Ennerdale bridge it was almost 10. The hike by Ennerdale Lake was very rocky and very up and down. After the lake it was through the Ennerdale valley on a logging road. That's correct they were logging parts of the valley. Made me feel like home. Didn't meet many other hikers at all as they had all left before me. Very quiet. Got off the trail once as there are many trails and the C2C trail is not well marked. Only lost about 10 minutes. Thank goodness for the Garmin. Invaluable. At the Black sail hostel met two elderly couples having a break. I don't know how they are coping. After the hostel the path had to leave the valley so it went straight up the valley side 400 metres. No switchbacks. It was tiring. Caught up with some other hikers. Went into the next valley which had been mined for slate. By then it was getting on to 4 ish and I still had a few miles to go. It started raining but this is the most wet part of the UK with 5 metres of rain per year. The trail seemed to go on and on. Finally made it to Rosthwaite. Asked an elderly gentleman where the Royal Oak hotel was and he told me that he had lived there for 2 years and had never heard of the Royal Oak. Felt he had to be wrong. Walked 1/2 block turned right and there it was. Incredible. What you don't need to hear at the end of a long day. Met the three brothers at the Royal Oak and joined them for a very swank supper. Met a fellow in the lobby today who was camping and hiking and had managed to turn his ankle today after becoming lost. He was calling it quits after 2 days. Yikes.
