      4. Tag Stadt und Meer

      5. oktober 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

      Ah, Biarritz

      21. juli 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Someone once told me that his favorite place in Europe is Biarritz so I was predisposed to like this seaside town with several beaches, surf, great food, diving, great food, narrow streets, great food, basque charm, great food and beautiful people on parade. Oh, the weather was pefectly delightful as well.

While I was only there two brief nights I had the best chocolate sorbet I have tried (and I try them all. Pamplona was a close 2nd, fwiw), fresh delicious seafood, a delightful morning yoga session/swim, a beautiful sunny afternoon swim and stroll watching wavelets and happy people on the beach, and an evening swim workout.... All on separate beaches within a short stroll from the best AirBnb experience I've had.

I reviewed an incredible seafood market, fell in love a thousand times (ok, maybe lust?), vicariously geared up for scuba, window shopped boutiques, appreciated art, savored a cold beverage or two, and watched some Brazilian fellow jump over a flag. Incredibly patient people tolerated my butchery of their language; among the most notable were A) my airbnb's dog who cared not one lick for how I mispronounced commands: he accepted scritches in 3 languages; and B) the very happily drunk young man at the bus stop at 7:30 AM who was delighted to muddle through a combination of French, Spanish, English to learn a little about where I am from, where I am going, and to heartily recommend that I visit Ustaritz. He is from there and I suspect he is biased... But certainly enthusiastic.

It helped a great deal that good friends who I have known for nearly 20 years in Costa Rica live part-time in Biarritz and kept me company for the day. Many thanks to you, Jean Marc and Rhonda. I look forward to the next time that our paths cross.

      We landed! Biarritz

      7. maj, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Welp! We got super lucky 🍀 and got to the gate as they announced gate closure. We were eating lunch in Atlanta and didn’t realize boarding began and hour before departure not 30 minutes. EEK!!😱

They poured us big wine cups 🍷 on the plane!

We landed in Paris and quickly hopped the transfer to Biarritz. The ride to the quaint beach town that has big waves and awesome surfers was quick and easy. 25 euros for the cab ride.

We walked around to see the ocean views, grab a bite, french wines and window shopped some artisan chocolates. Amy teaching me French! 🇫🇷

Once our room was ready we took naps and enjoyed the view from our room.

We went to the spa and went swimming in the heated pool. The hotel had an indoor and outdoor pool, hot steam sauna.

Looking to use some of the gym and spa services for body treatments while we acclimate to time change and get her out jet lag.

      Feeling Froggy - Carpe Diem

      9. maj, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Final day of R-N-R in Biarritz. We woke up early to a dense sea fog, a common thing around here due to the Pyrenees mountains meeting the sea. After breakfast we met Alan, our local guide for a private tour of his hometown, learning about the history, culture, and geology of the region plus a sprinkle of spirituality, philosophy and folklore.

The rest of the day was spent enjoying the sun, scenery and spa amenities at the hotel - pool, sauna, hammam, and beach while Trina went on her own adventure exploring the town and coming back with snacks and wine to have a happy hour picnic on our balcony. We concluded the day with a sunset stroll along the shore to find Trina some seafood.

We depart for St Jean PDP tomorrow to prepare for "the real" journey ahead. We are getting weather reports of rain all the way to Pamplona for our first days on the Camino. Not ideal, but it is what it is. So, we decided to "Basque" in the sunshine today.

      Carpe diem.

      Au revoir, Biarritz! 🇫🇷

      10. maj, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Yesterday was our last full day. We had a lovely breakfast at the hotel. Fresh raw salmon, croissant, De Gateau Basque (it’s kinda like a custard and cake pie, very good) fresh juices cappuccino and fried eggs the French way. I mention the breakfast because it was very different than what I would get at hotel in the states.

We took a walking tour with Allan, a local Basque man. He explained a little history and climate change.

I left the tour before it ended to enjoy a massage at the hotel, saltwater pool swim and hot steam sauna.

Afterwards, I walked up the coast to see the view and thought I could get a good snack. However, I didn’t realize that every restaurant & cafe is closed at 2pm and doesn’t re-open until 7:30pm. I walked around and found the cafes full with people slowly sipping a glass of wine or lemonade bubble water and no food served.

As the clouds and fog lifted I saw the Pyrenees mountains in the background of the gorgeous views. I thought about what that will be like walking up those big beasts. I said don’t think about it just do it. Zoom in on the pictures and you can see the mountains.

Some of the places I stopped on my walk were the church Sainte-Eugénie Church of Biarritz. It is big and beautiful.

Plage du Port Vieux, an ocean pool where sunbathers come to relax with out having rough water if the open sea.

Playa De Biarritz. A swiming and surfing beach.

I was pretty hungry by the time 6:30pm and found a small custard dessert shop that sold these tiny custard balls, a tiny store that sold wine, chorizo, cheese, bread and canned pate’. I bought it and brought it to the hotel for a snack before dinner. Food is non-existent during the closed hours. I focused on the scenery and found the oasis of the dessert shop and small neighborhood store.

Met up with Amy and walked back over to the warf and had a nice dinner for sunset with some local oysters and razor back clams and local white wine. The sun set around 9:45pm.

We stumbled on a tiny nightclub about 1,000 sq ft. Had one drink and danced to Crystal Waters - gypsy! Fun!

Earlier in the day Allan our tour guide spoke about desire. He said if you desire what you don’t have you will always suffer And if you do get what you desire, it is only temporary. Attachment is not the way to live life. Detachment with love, appreciation and gratitude is to live life. Be here in the now and desire what you have.

On our last night in Biarritz I started feeling loss. Feeling how sad it was we were leaving this nice “ comfortable “ situation. I was attached to the comfort and certainty of this situation. Resisting what was ahead and unknown. Then I went and remembered the conversation with Allan and shifted my thinking to how great it was that I got to spend three days here and take care of my body with Sauna and pool. Sample French & Basque culture. Swim in the ocean on the other side of the world.

No loss, no sadness of leaving this place. Only happiness I got to experience it.

Today we pack up and head to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France 🇫🇷 to prepare of our walk on the El Camino De Santiago. I squeezed in an ocean cold plunge, hot sauna

      Biarritz

      4. maj 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After breakfast at my hotel, I walked a few blocks to the Gare Montparnasse train station to catch my train bound for Bayonne. It was a 4+ hour train ride and I spent most of my time sewing Camino patches onto my backpack. Nothing like waiting until the last minute! 🙄 I do love train rides, however, so I made sure to take in the sights of the beautiful countryside and the vast yellow fields of rapeseed.

After arriving in Bayonne, I had to wait quite awhile for a taxi to take me to Biarritz, a charming seaside town. When my taxi did show up, my driver was a woman and she apologized for not speaking English. I apologized for not speaking French and then we both rode in silence to my hotel.

My room at the Hôtel Littéraire Jules Verne was lovely and within walking distance to the restaurants, shops and the beach. I got restaurant recommendations from the hotel staff and opted for one with local fare given I was now in Basque Country.

The roasted peppers I ordered for my starter were cooked to perfection with the perfect amount of salt flakes that glistened in the light. Unfortunately, I was so famished that I ate most of them before I thought to take a picture. 🤣 For my main course I enjoyed trout and paired it with a Pinot noir. My girls will tell you that there’s nothing better than French bread in France and the bread on my table was no exception. I also love how they served it in a small bag.

During my dinner I had the perfect view of the almost full moon coming up in the distance. What a beautiful sight! Afterwards I strolled through the streets of this inviting town and then ventured down to the waterfront to take in the beautiful sunset.

Back at my hotel I discovered a Sleep Bar on a table near my room with three containers filled with herbs. The sign next to them explained that you were to fill a small bag with the herb of your choice and place it under your pillow. Of course, I did just that, but to no avail, I had a terrible nights sleep. 😩Maybe a third glass of wine would have been more sleep-inducing. 🥴

The buffet breakfast in the morning was wonderful with the BEST creamy scrambled eggs, assorted breads and jam, yogurts, cheeses, and make-your-own waffles. A perfect start to another wonderful day! ☺️

      Cafe au lait aka redemption

      25. marts, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Mission of the day, which I set myself and therefore accepted, was to not let being a little bitch get in the way. A regret I bring home from anywhere with a language barrier I've travelled is prioritising 'not looking silly' over an experience I want, and as much as the French have a reputation for helping you along in your self loathing, damn it, I wanted a cafe breakfast.

Well. Turns out either I'm amazing or the folk in Biarritz are angels or maybe everything just came together today. I stormed (walked) into Les Halles, and seized the day (ordered a coffee) and took up space (sat quietly on a stool) and took my bloody time (ordered a pastry when my coffee was gone) and demanded (muddled through) it all in French and DID IT (did it).

      Biarritz

      9. april, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I see the light Phare de Biarritz

      8. maj, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Tina and I have been enjoying our visit with a great breakfast, a spa circuit in the sauna, pools, and hamam. Our philosophical history basque tour was cancelled, so we walked up to the lighthouse, complete with a hilltop bar to enjoy a few drinks overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It's a beautiful sunny day and life is good!Læs mere
