      Louvre - später

      10. juli 2022, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Meine eindringliche Empfehlung: Bucht! Tickets! Vorab!

      17. maj 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I booked an afternoon at the Louvre, unaware of what we were in for. It's much bigger than I considered. It was confusing to navigate, though eventually we found a method to follow the map but it was still not easy.

We did make to find the Mona Lisa, but the queue filled the room and there was so much to see. Again, to many pieces of work that were NFFF.

This was our last full day in Paris. Tomorrow we head for London in the afternoon.

      Im Louvre

      23. august 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      Oct 17 - La Madeleine

      17. oktober 2019, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We then went to the Galleries Lafayette, an upmarket French department store. Apparently, it caters to all budgets, but we seemed to see only the really, really expensive sections. The Gucci section had a velvet rope across the entry and two ladies controlling the number of shoppers inside. The architecture of the store is art nouveau, with a remarkable dome. It was worth navigating the hordes of people to see it. But best of all, there is a free panoramic view of Paris from the 6th floor. It pays to go on guided tours - it was Nicholas who gave us the tip. Fabulous views on, dare I say it, a dry, almost sunny day!

We found a little sandwich shop and had a late lunch. My entertainment was watching two young people canoodling at the table in the front window. I sure hoped the guy wasn’t going to propose in a sandwich shop. He didn’t. Hope they went straight home - things were getting hot.

Next stop - the flower market by La Madeleine. Parisians love their flowers. If I lived here, I’d probably have fresh flowers very frequently.

La Madeleine is a Roman Catholic church occupies a commanding position - from its front doors, you can see Place de la Concorde. The church was designed in its present form as a temple to the glory of Napoleon's army. It is surrounded by 52 Corinthian columns. In the peak of the front facade is a sculpture of the Last Supper. The bronze doors of the church display the Ten Commandments. Inside, above the high altar, stands a statue by Charles Marochetti depicting St Mary Magdalene being lifted up by angels during her daily prayers. The half-dome above the altar is fresco entitled The History of Christianity, showing the key figures in the Christian religion with — a sign of its Second Empire date — Napoleon occupying centre stage.

On the way home, we stopped at street art exhibit at the Petit Palais and Grand Palais museums. There were lots of food trucks and funky exhibits.

We strolled home and enjoyed the sunshine to enjoy some downtime with the windows open showcasing the blue sky and the Eiffel Tower.

Paris Opera House & Galeries LaFayette

      6. juni 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Sunny, 27 degrees C.
Late start to the day for Nancy and Jan. They saw Doug off to the CGD Airport by hotel transfer, taking with him wonderful memories and half of Nancy and Janet's luggage. A test of compromise, they shrunk their travel essentials down to one carry on plus an overnighter and Jan's walker to make the train travel sans Doug possible. Got on Route 29 bus which picked up right outside our accommodation; but only got less than half way to our destination (Paris Opera House Toot Bus Stop) and we had to get off due to a traffic jam! So change of plan from getting the Hop on Hop off bus and going to the Eiffel Tower. We walked along Rue Etienne Marcel which changes to Rue Petite Champs and there were many Japanese restaurants. Had excellent bento boxes in a restaurant bordering one of the few remaining covered passages. Then we walked to Garnier Opera House, got tickets and saw most of it before closing. It opened in 1875 to great pomp and ceremony and is still home to opera and ballet. We then walked to nearby Galleries Lafayette, a very large and elegant department store to admire the stain glass roof, and have an ice cream and coffee. There was a great view from the terrace at the top and we managed to get Jan and the walker up by escalator. After waiting almost 30 min for a bus that never came, we took a taxi home and dinner in.Læs mere

      Eat Nice Paris Baguette

      16. september 2022, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The night before, when we got to our airbnb, we tried to break into a different building first before realizing that we were at the wrong address. The airbnb was small and smelled very strange but was in a great location. We walked past the Louvre and then drank coffee and ate baguettes. Then we went to the Musee d'Orangerie and saw Monet's water lilies.Læs mere

Paris - Tour Eiffel + Le Crazy Horse

      6. september 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

The first big day out in Paris! Straight up, we should be thankful for having children who did not complain once despite the 10km+ of walking we put in today! We decided to walk from Montmartre to the Musée du Louvre because at 36 minutes, it seemed only marginally slower than taking the Metro without the hassle of trying to work out the ticket vending machines. The Louvre deserves its own posting, so the adventure continues on after the Louvre to the walk through the Tuilleres Garden just outside, along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées to the Arch de Triomphe, with the plan to find a boulangerie on the way to buy a baguette to eat with our salami and cheese. Despite a relatively high density of such shops everywhere else in Paris, it would appear the cost of real estate on the Champs-Élysées would render this type of business unprofitable, because there were none to be found.

Still, around the corner on the way back to the Tour Eiffel we managed to locate one as well as a park bench at which we could rest the weary feet. Across the Seine we bought our tickets to the top of the Eiffel Tower and once again I think we were relatively lucky in terms of waiting time (15 minutes or so). The real queues started at the elevators, both on the way up and on the way down and no amount of pre-purchasing was going to save us from that. But, it was worth it - a most incredible structure and really quite beautiful. The 1991 budget tourist me could only afford to walk to the second level, so the lift to the top was a treat (and much less tiring).

We caught the Metro home. Walking was not an option.

The kids enjoyed dinner out with Nanny and Poppy, having crepes for dessert and a night view of the Sacré-Cœur - complete with furnicular ride to the top.

Craig and I enjoyed a dinner out in Paris prior to going to the Le Crazy Horse cabaret show. Finn was asking why they weren't coming out with us. We told them that the show was only for adults to go to, Craig adding that they didn't want stinky children there. When we got home, the kids had found a brochure for Crazy Horse whilst they were out for dinner with Nanny and Poppy and Kate said "I know why we couldn't go mum. It looked like those girl soldiers were not wearing very many clothes."

True dat! The theatre was smallish, perhaps seating around 150. We had great seats only 4 rows from the front with a bottle of champagne. The lighting, music, costumes (what little there were) and the stage setting were done brilliantly. Highly recommended for a special night out in Paris.
